Matthew W. Coon, Director 574-586-3444 Page 4 - Walkerton Area Shopper March 10, 2014 Disney’s TARZAN Swings into the John Glenn Auditorium “Me…Tarzan. You…Jane.” With one of the most famous introductions in modern literature, author Edgar Rice Burroughs created the iconic character of “Tarzan,” an infant left orphaned on the desolate African coast and raised by a family of apes. Through various story, film, and television versions, Tarzan has had adventure after adventure and now, the John Glenn Theatre Company will present an exciting new adaptation based on the animated Disney film. TARZAN will be presented at John Glenn High School on Friday, March 14 at 7:30, Saturday, March 15 at 2:00 and 7:30, and Sunday, March 16 at 2:00. Tickets may be purchased at John Glenn High School during school hours. All tickets are $7.00 and seating is reserved. Call (574) 586-3195 ext. 8203 for more information. Any unreserved seats will be sold prior to each performance. With music and lyrics by Phil Collins and a book by David Henry Hwang, TARZAN follows the plot and many of the familiar characters from the Disney film, although as a full theatrical performance, the story has expanded a bit, including additional songs to go along with the Disney favorites, “Strangers Like Me”, “Son Of Man,” “Trashing the Camp,” and the hauntingly tender, “You’ll Be In My Heart.” Starring in the production as the title character is Adam Dodson, along with Keegan Carrasco, who plays “young Tarzan.” Austin Whitaker takes on the role of Tarzan’s friend “Terk”, while Ryan Arick and Sydney Carson portray Tarzan’s primate parents, “Kerchak” and “Kala.” Anthony Borrelli is the villainous hunter, “Clayton”, and Ryan Kulwicki and Allison Pearish round out the leading players as “Professor Porter” and “Jane.” The ensemble includes Raven Miller, Evan Baker, Justina Weiss, Daniel Shinkle, Aubrie Banks, Dustin Kerckhove, Hayden Parsons, Nick Weith, Thad Van Overberghe, Nathan Kickbush, Aacen O’Connor, Nicole Fullmer, Allysa Eldridge, Allie Sheffer, Tess Bladow, Madeleine Silvey, Ashton Pease, Jenna Adams, Brianne Richardson, Paige Sokol, Mackenzie Moore and Shelby Fortlander. Joining the high school cast are junior actors Melinda Dodson, Sam Carson, David Shinkle, Ljiljana Medich, Gabriel Medich, Bryce Strycker, Connor Arick, Hayley Arick, KatelynVermilyer, and Emmalie VanOverberghe. The student director is Jacob Kickbush. Student musicians include Kayla Scribner, Brittnie Spornhauer, Taylor Winkel, Mikayla Fortlander, Brooklyn Kelley, James Farnsworth, Mason Strycker, Bryce Lemert, Anna Schmeltz, and Jacob Sleek. Adult members of the pit are Dan Fortlander, Dan Drotar, Nick Medich, and Mitzi Knepper. Liz Drotar is music director and Jennifer Medich is the choreographer. Adam Pearish is the technical director. Connie Fansler provides theatrical assistance. The production is directed by Richard Fansler. Make plans now to get to John Glenn High School and attend TARZAN. It’ll be a “swingin’” good time! Or maybe an item to sell? Place this nicely priced ad size. 1x3 Ad Size $23.40 Believe it or not, even with ice and snow underfoot, we should be thinking about protecting our dogs from Lyme disease. Most are aware that Lyme disease is passed through the bite of an infected tick. Although we are not seeing ticks just yet, it is a good time to vaccinate and build immunity against the health hazard. Lyme disease is an infection caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium. Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick and can affect many species, including dogs and humans. Ticks of the Ixodes species (called deer ticks) are known to transmit Lyme disease when they attach to a host and feed. Because the tick must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease, frequent inspection for ticks (and quick removal) can reduce the risk of disease transmission. Lyme disease is more common in certain areas of the United States, including the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and upper Midwest. Clinical Signs of Lyme disease Clinical signs may not appear for several months after a dog is infected with Lyme disease. In fact, many dogs fail to display any obvious clinical signs at all. When signs of infection are noted, they may include the following: Lethargy, Fever, Painful joints, Loss of appetite. Clinical signs may seem to FISH LAKE CONSERVATION CLUB 7873 S.55j5R5Fish Lake FISH FRY Fri.,5,"5gj5R5j7m5p.m. CST All-U-Can-Eat Fish $7.00 Children Under 10 – $3.00 Pre-Schoolers FREE!! Pop and desserts available for purchase. Carry-outs available resolve on their own, only to reappear at a later time. Lyme disease has also been linked to long-term complications involving the joints, kidneys, heart, and nervous system. It can cause irreversible kidney damage even leading to death. Diagnosis Lyme disease is usually diagnosed based on a medical history that includes the possibility of tick exposure, suspicious clinical signs, and results of diagnostic testing. Several tests can identify the Borrelia burgdorferi organism in blood or tissues. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to Lyme disease or your pet has not had a monthly tick preventative, especially during the warmer months of the year, testing is a good idea. Treatment Treatment of Lyme disease generally consists of administration of antibiotics and (if necessary) other medications to temporarily help control joint pain and other clinical signs. Some dogs show dramatic improvement after only a few days of receiving specific antibiotics, but most veterinarians recommend a 28-30 day course of treatment. Relapses are not uncommon, so pet owners are advised to monitor their dogs carefully for signs of illness. Prevention Vaccine is available to help prevent the Lyme disease organism. An initial vaccination is followed by a booster vaccine 2 to 4 weeks later (in accordance with label recommendations) and annual boosters, as long as the risk for disease exposure remains. The Lyme vaccine is not necessarily recommended for all dogs. Ask your veterinarian about the risk of Lyme disease where you live and whether the Lyme vaccine is recommended for your dog. Tick Control Appropriate tick control methods combined with periodic testing may be the best ways to help protect dogs and human exposure through our pets. Be “Tick Savvy” • Check your pets (and your family) frequently for ticks, and remove them promptly. • Use a reliable method of tick control (be sure the product is veterinarian recommended for efficacy and safety) • If possible, avoid tall grass or wooded areas where ticks are likely to hide. • If you routinely take your dog camping or walking in wooded areas, ask your veterinarian about the best ways to control ticks.
