arriott hotel ... follow the signs in the
lobby! Come over to our famed
hospitality suite for some great conversation,
great food, and great times. There is certainly
no better to place to connect with bridge
friends after the game. The ideal place to
spread, “You hold stories.” Tuesday through
Saturday from 4:30-6:00 p.m. and again
10:15-11:00 p.m. Everyone is invited and we
hope to see you there!
Please remember that you are here for
snacks not dinner! We would like there to be
enough snacks and hospitality for everyone.
M
Parking Issue Tonight
Due to a Concert
he Mesa Convention Center is hosting a
concert in their Amphitheater tonight.
There will be a large crowd of people arriving
about 4:30 for the 7:00 p.m. concert. If you
are planning on playing the evening session,
we would strongly suggest you plan on eating
locally and not giving up your parking spot.
You will have a difficult time finding another
one. While there is additional parking behind
the Marriott Hotel, it might mean extra
walking. You can eat at Café Azul in the
Marriott (we suggest making reservations), or
the many restaurants a few blocks away in
downtown Mesa. Many of them will have
special deals for bridge players.

Vicki Pina
Goodwill Ambassador
nit 354's Goodwill
recipient is Vicki
Pina of Scottsdale.
Vicki’s profession was
as a teacher and
business owner who
received numerous
community awards
during her career. Vicki
Vicki Pina
retired in 1990 and
began playing duplicate bridge (first learned
the game in college). During that time she
taught bridge classes and received her
director credentials. She also became a Unit

In 1999 Vicki went back to work as the
Community Outreach Manager at Homeward
Bound, an organization that provides
transitional housing and comprehensive
social services to families with children
fleeing domestic violence and/or
homelessness. Shortly after she gave up
playing bridge for a while.
Upon returning to duplicate bridge in 2010
Vicki again became involved with the unit

Gold Rush Pairs defined
he regional offers the popular Gold Rush
Pairs two days, Tuesday and Wednesday.
There is some need for definition of exactly
what the Gold Rush Pairs are. It is really a
strati-flighted event with Flight A/B (02000+/2000+) open to all players and played
separately. Simultaneously, the Stratified
“Gold Rush” pairs are limited to 750 MPs,
playing in their own event. The strats are 0300/300-750. The draw here is the upper strat
(300-750) strat section top winners and
overall placements are awarded gold points
allowing players to win gold without ever
competing with, or against, anyone with more
than 750 points.
Section top awards and overall placements in
the 0-300 strat do not pay gold unless that
score wins the section for all players in both
strats, or places overall in the upper strat.

The Why & How
of Lebensohl
By Ned Kohler 4 of 5
Partner Doubles Their Weak Two Bid
After (2x) - Dbl - (Pass) Play Lebensohl almost the same as after
interference over 1NT.
Bids at the two level (if available) are weak
with maximum bad 8 HCP.
2NT is a relay to 3Ê, which may be passed
with a weak hand.
2NT, followed by a suit that could not be bid
at the 2 level, is weak. Opener must have
substantial extra strength to proceed.
2NT followed by a suit that could have been
bid at the two level is invitational.
An immediate 3 level bid of a suit that could
not have been bid at the 2 level is Invitational.
An immediate 3 level bid of a suit that could
have been bid at the 2 level is GF and shows
five.
A cue bid is GF except that a 3Ë cue shows
both majors and is invitational or better. With
a GF hand but only a 4-card suit to show,
begin with a cue bid.
Unlike after notrump interference, the 3Ê
relay is not absolute.
Opener can reject the relay if he is strong
enough to want to play game opposite hands
that would pass the 3Ê response to the 2NT
relay. It requires essentially a 2NT opener or
better hand.
