Dear parents and families
Leading Learning
It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you as Acting Principal of Scottsdale High School for at least
this first term. I have a vested interest in our school and also in our community having spent the first 19
years of my life in and around the north east region. I was born in Scottsdale and grew up in Bridport
spending many a long hot summer on the beaches, as my father was caretaker of the Bridport Caravan
Park for many years. I attended Bridport Primary School and then Scottsdale High School during the
1970’s. My first job was as a clerk at Roberts Stewarts Pty Ltd selling farm equipment and spare parts to
local farmers.
It was not until the late 1980’s early 1990’s and that I started my teaching degree at UTAS with my first
teaching appointment being at George Town High School which later became Port Dalrymple School. I
spent ten years at Port ending up as Middle School Manager. From there I took up an AST appointment
at Lilydale District High School and also served as Acting Assistant Principal there for one year. Then it
was off to Hobart with two years as AST at Clarence High, School a large city school of some 1000
students. Most recently I transferred back up north to take up an appointment at Beaconsfield Primary
School where I have been Principal for four years.
It is a tremendous privilege for me to be back on my home turf and to be leading Scottsdale High School.
My predecessor Ms Fedyk has left me a school that is superbly organised and that is clearly focused on
improvement in student learning outcomes. Scottsdale High School is already a leading Tasmanian school
in many respects; with an outstanding reputation throughout the state. My goal is for Scottsdale High
School to be a leading Tasmanian school in every aspect. I look forward to meeting with parents and
families as we work in partnership to ensure that this goal is realised.
Staffing
I would like to introduce new members of our staff to the school this year. Firstly: Mr Ben Frerk our
newly appointed Acting Assistant Principal in charge of the Junior School who also has a key curriculum
leadership role this year in Maths, Science and several other important curriculum areas. He comes to us
highly experienced from Kings Meadows High School along with Mr Rob Lade who joins our Junior School
Team. Mr Jake Chamberlain joins us from Brooks High School as part of our grade 8 team and Mr Scott
Brewer also from Brooks High School joins our Junior School Team. Ms Catherine Walker has taken up
her first full time teaching appointment this year and is part of the Senior School Team, Mrs Teresa
Sweetman from Bridport Primary School has followed her grade 6 group from last year!
We would also like to welcome Mr Liam Gilligan who will be running our Outdoor Education Centre
taking over from Mr Craig Searle. We welcome Mrs Margaret Clifford to Dorset Education and Training
Centre. Grade supervisors for this year: Mr Jared Campbell Grade 7, Mr Ben Gofton Grade 8, Miss
Andrea Brooke Grade 9 and Mrs Michelle Kelly Grade 10. Mr Caleb Turale is heading our Senior School
team and also has the Post Year 10 portfolio including our Trade Training Centre.
Conclusion
The Chinese have a very old but very wise saying that, “Better than a thousand days of learning is one day
with an excellent teacher.” Our focus at Scottsdale High this year as in previous years will be to keep on
aiming for excellence in our teaching and learning opportunities. We have an elegant new curriculum to
assist us in this by way of the Australian Curriculum which we are teaching this year in the important
areas of: English, Maths, Science and History.

Music Opportunities in 2012
Launceston Cup Day Holiday –
February 29, 2012
In addition to the normal music program,
students will this year have the opportunity to
work with Lauren Hawkins.
Lauren is
experienced in piano tuition and is also heavily
involved in choir orchestration.
We have been advised by Central Office in Hobart
that, as the current Teaching Service Agreement
between the AEU and the Department of
Education has expired, Launceston Cup Day will be
a public holiday for all students.
In addition to offering students the chance to be
in a vocal ensemble, Lauren is also available to
tutor students in piano. The cost will be $30
per half hour or $300 per term. Lessons will be
during class time or lunch times.
Prior to 2008, students did not attend school on
Launceston Cup Day. As this Agreement has now
expired, we revert to the pre- 2008 arrangements.
This is an exciting opportunity for students at
Scottsdale High. If you would be interested in
your child having music tuition with Lauren,
please complete the tear off slip below and
return it to the school office. As places are
limited, priority will be given to those who are
first to respond.
We apologise for the short notice and hope you
will not be too inconvenienced.
