The first patient to receive silicone breast implants was in Texas in 1962. They were immensely popular until the late 70s - early 80s, when the implants were linked to causing pain, cancers and autoimmune diseases. In 1992 the FDA called for a voluntary moratorium on the use of silicone implants until new safety information could be reviewed. Later that year, they allowed the implants to be used only for breast reconstruction in controlled clinical studies. In 2006 the FDA lifted its ban after thoroughly reviewing all the studies that showed no link between silicone implants and any diseases. Silicone implants have regained its former popularity for nearly all breast surgeries due to its more natural look and feel (mimicking real breast tissue) when compared to saline implants. Furthermore, the rupture and failure rates are very low, much more so in the current generation of implants manufactured. Regular MRIs – three years after implantation, then every two years thereafter are recommended. An MRI is nearly three times more likely to detect rupture of an implant compared to a physical exam. There are no strict guidelines when a silicone implant needs to be replaced, but the implants usually last 10-12 years. I generally recommend replacement when a rupture is detected or when the breast implant loses its shape and feel. Fun times. For a break, I went outside to my backyard. Some fresh air, I thought, might help. As I was wandering around, I noticed a weed that had poked through in one of the rock areas. I walked over to pull it out, and as I kneeled down, I noticed that it wasn’t a weed at all. Rather, it was the start of a tiny tree. Comparing the miniature leaves to the trees around my backyard, I finally figured out that it was an offshoot of our lemon tree. Making lemonade Sometimes, my life is a pun. Not intentionally, but it happens. I took it as a sign—I should take lemons and make lemonade. In a much happier mood, I went back inside and the rest of the day went fine. Both drugs work b byy altering the immune system response. However, it will be very important for people with MS and their physicianss to remain vigilant and be on the lookout for side effects.” ly The studies were funded by the drug’s manufacturers, who are currently pursuing U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for their medications.. 02/10 Scottsdale HEALTH 13 Muscle 0210 BY TIFFANY MARIE BRANNON Did you Know? Famished, in fact. You haven’t eaten anything since lunch (which was really more like breakfast) and now that you’re home, it’s too late to go out and you’re too tired to cook. Enter the Electronic Hero! It stands, like a knight in shining armor with its metallic sheen, awaiting your command. You open the freezer, and there, like hidden treasure, lays a trove of frozen pizzas, boxed burritos and good old Jimmy Dean. You immediately weigh your options, choose your fancy, and follow the instructions on the back of the box. You push your dazzling hero’s easy-to-open door and place your bounty inside, punch the numbers into the magic keyboard and presto-chango—it’s finished! And that is the tale of microwave, our legendary solution to late night hunger needs...or is it? 18 Scottsdale HEALTH 02/10 YOUR FOOD COOKS HOW?!? Recently in America, as well as abroad, there have been numerous reports and inquiries made into the health hazards of microwave ovens. Words like “radioactive,” “cancercausing” and “toxic” are being tossed around. So what’s the real deal and should we be worried or just pass the criticism of the microwave off as another new trend in a “go green” obsessed society? The microwave oven, or Minerals, vitamins and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down. “Amana Radarange” as it was originally called, was accidentally invented by a scientist named Percy Spencer, an engineer who worked with magnetrons (the power tubes for the sensitive radar sets that allowed Allied forces to win WWII against the German U-Boats). When Spencer noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket melted while using the microwave, it became the food heater we know today. A microwave oven works by emitting radio microwaves that affect the cells and molecules where water is present, causing them to move extremely fast and change polarity so that the energy within the cells is transformed into frictional heat, thus warming or “cooking” food. When it comes to the dangers of using a microwave, we aren’t talking about the possibility of radiation poisoning or damage caused by the actual microwave itself—that’s all completely contained within the plastic, metal outer shell and shielding door—we’re talking about the dangerous effects that it causes in the food we eat. The theory is that there are no molecules or cells that are able to withstand the violent movement microwaves force them to undergo during the heating process without being distorted from their original form or destroyed completely. This means damage, leaving the cells that make up our food weakened and impaired, allowing them to become deformed versions of themselves and easily accessible to viruses and microorganisms. DID YOU KNOW? The human body cannot metabolize the unknown by-products created in microwaved food. THE NITTY-GRITTY In reported experiments, this distortion was found in microwaved baby formulas, as the microwave process converted certain trans-amino acids into synthetic cis-isomers. Also, one of the amino acids was converted to its The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual within the human body. In addition, microwaving milk and cereal grains converted some of their amino acids into carcinogens, which are cancer-causing agents directly involved in the exacerbation of cancer or in the increase of its propagation. There was also a reportedly decreased food value of 60-90% in all foods tested. THE MICROWAVE ITSELF... On the other side of this argument is most of the Western world. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, a U.S. Federal Standard limits the amount of microwaves that can leak from an oven throughout its lifetime and lists it as far below the exposure level currently considered to be harmful to human health. The radiation produced by a microwave oven is non-ionizing. It therefore does not have the cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation such as X-rays BE YOUR OWN HERO In the end, while there’s still a lot of research to be done, it would seem that our microwave hero isn’t so super after all. He may not directly cause cancer, radiation poisoning or be toxic, but he doesn’t provide the healthiest options out there. So maybe instead of turning to his ever-giving instant gratification way of eating, you can put your health before your stomach and eat fresh food that hasn’t been pumped Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations. full of chemicals or zapped by radio-waves into heated submission. Be your own late night hero and maybe tomorrow you can save the world. Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability and a decrease of intelligence. or ultraviolet light. Long-term rodent studies to assess cancer risk have so far failed to identify any carcinogenicity from microwave radiation even with chronic exposure levels. With the oven door open, the only damage via radiation is by heating, the same as any other cooking device. 02/10 Scottsdale HEALTH 19 Balance 0210 BY MYRNALYNN It’s a fact—most of us want to lose weight. Along with a successful career as a partner at Grant Thornton LLP, Brad Preber has managed to create a life that artfully blends family, fitness, a commitment to being a leader in charity initiatives, and his lifelong love of fly fishing. The 50-year-old Preber keeps his waders next to his business suits, and explains, “Fly fishing is a way to keep old friendships alive, or alternatively, a way to foster business relationships…There’s really no better way to build a business relationship than to fish hard with somebody for two or three days out in the wilderness.” Beyond using fly fishing as a business bonding activity, Preber draws further parallels between these two major parts of his life, “Fishing and business have a lot in common. FWFOUT-!BOE!NPSF/ A LIFE RECLAIMED: CAROLANN’S STORY How SottoPelle® created a total transformation Carolann Tutera felt awful – and she didn’t know why. Her energy was gone, replaced by extra weight; she was soaking the sheets with night sweats, and a near-permanent bad mood had sucked the joy from her life. “I was miserably mean,” she says. But she chalked it up to the unpleasant effects of aging, thinking she had to live with the hand she was dealt. Then Carolann turned an ear to the buzz in the waiting room of her husband’s clinic. Working as an OB/GYN at the time, Dr. Gino Tutera was developing an impressive clientele. Women were flying in from all around the country, flocking to see Dr. Tutera – but it wasn’t just his bedside manner making him a well-known name. It was an innovative treatment called bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and it was giving women their lives back. Listening to these women rave about the effects, Carolann decided she had nothing to lose by giving BHRT a try. It was a smart move; baseline labs revealed that Carolann had the hormonal levels of a woman far beyond her age. Soon, with the help of Dr. Tutera and his revolutionary hormone replacement therapy, Carolann’s life did a dramatic turnaround. She slept better, regained her usual high energy levels, felt happier, and lost the stubborn pounds she’d packed on. Even her skin looked smoother and brighter. “People thought I’d had work done,” she says. Ever since then, Carolann has been one of the leading champions for her husband’s cause – and his SottoPelle® hormone pellet therapy has skyrocketed as increasingly more people, men and women alike, have learned of the amazing benefits it can offer. “My job is to help you improve your quality of life so you can enjoy your life,” says Dr. Tutera. An individualized dosage of natural, plant-derived hormones restores levels to perfect equilibrium; the effective pellet delivery system ensures a steady stream of hormones is available when the body needs it most. The result is a return to an optimal, youthful balance – and, for people like Carolann, a return to their former, vibrant selves. “It absolutely changed my life,” she says. “It has made such a huge impact in my life, and my relationships with others.” Now she enjoys watching others undergo the same thrilling transformation, and sharing their delight as they regain a vitality once thought to be gone forever. It’s as though SottoPelle® patients have found the proverbial Fountain of Youth – in convenient pellet form. - i>ÊvwVi\Ê{nä°nÇ{°£x£xÊÊUÊÊ*>À>`ÃiÊ6>iÞÉ>à Ê-µÕ>Ài\Ê{nä°ÈÈΰ£x£xÊÊUÊÊÀÀÜ i>`\ÊÈÓΰnÇn°£x£x >`iÀ\Ê{nä°ÇÎÓ°£x£xÊÊUÊÊ*ÀiÃVÌÌ\ÊÓn°{{ΰ£x£xÊÊUÊÊ-i`>\ÊÓn°Óä{°£x£x ÜÜÜ°ÃÌÌ«iiÌ iÀ>«Þ°V
