ARE SILICONE BREAST
IMPLANTS SAFE?
The first patient to receive silicone
breast implants was in Texas in 1962.
They were immensely popular until
the late 70s - early 80s, when the
implants were linked to causing pain,
cancers and autoimmune diseases. In
1992 the FDA called for a voluntary
moratorium on the use of silicone
implants until new safety information
could be reviewed. Later that year, they
allowed the implants to be used only
for breast reconstruction in controlled
clinical studies. In 2006 the FDA lifted
its ban after thoroughly reviewing all
the studies that showed no link between
silicone implants and any diseases.
Silicone implants have regained its
former popularity for nearly all breast
surgeries due to its more natural look
and feel (mimicking real breast tissue)
when compared to saline implants.
Furthermore, the rupture and failure rates
are very low, much more so in the current
generation of implants manufactured.
Regular MRIs – three years after
implantation, then every two years
thereafter are recommended. An MRI is
nearly three times more likely to detect
rupture of an implant compared to a
physical exam.
There are no strict guidelines when a
silicone implant needs to be replaced, but
the implants usually last 10-12 years. I
generally recommend replacement when
a rupture is detected or when the breast
implant loses its shape and feel.

There’s a new formula available for a disinfectant that’s
effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi and even prions,
the proteins that cause mad-cow disease.
According to a report in the Journal of General
Virology, the disinfectant—which combines an alkaline
detergent formula with alcohol—kills a variety of pathogens. Examples include those that are resistant to ordinary
disinfectants, such as the germs that cause a tuberculosislike illness in people with weakened immune systems and
viruses that apparently could cause polio.

NEW DRUG FOR MS
Two new drugs, both oral rather than injected, may soon be available to

Three studies, all published in the New England Journal of Medicine,

“Oral drugs are what people with MS have been wishing for a long

Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). “The drugs appear to be quite effective, and at the moment, appear to have a reasonable risk-benefit ratio.

NAME: Jamie Stern
AGE: 30
WHAT I DO DURING THE DAY: Since having a baby, I
have taken on the roll of a full-time mom and wife. My
days are long and my nights are short!
MY NUTRITIONAL/WORKOUT ROUTINE IS: To make sure
to eat breakfast every day. This includes egg whites,
almonds, and grapefruit. I try to limit my bad carbs and
sugar as much as possible but I will treat myself to the
occasional piece of cheesecake. I enjoy hiking Pinnacle
Peak as often as I can and I workout three times a week
at Premier Fitness with the best trainer in town!
MY BIGGEST MOTIVATOR IS: My family and me! Being
in shape is a mental, as well as a physical, practice.
I WORKOUT BECAUSE: After recently gaining weight
from my pregnancy, I decided that it was time to get
serious about health. Being healthy and active is now
my way of life. Looking and feeling healthy is what
makes me happy.
I LOVE SCOTTSDALE BECAUSE: The weather and
the beautiful scenery. Being a native has made me
appreciate living in a place where year-round we have
an unlimited number of activities to enjoy.

YOUR FOOD COOKS
HOW?!?
Recently in America, as well as
abroad, there have been numerous
reports and inquiries made into the
health hazards of microwave ovens.
Words like “radioactive,” “cancercausing” and “toxic” are being
tossed around. So what’s the real
deal and should we be worried or
just pass the criticism of the microwave off as another new trend in a
“go green” obsessed society?
The microwave oven, or
Minerals, vitamins

down.
“Amana Radarange” as it was
originally called, was accidentally
invented by a scientist named Percy
Spencer, an engineer who worked
with magnetrons (the power tubes
for the sensitive radar sets that
allowed Allied forces to win WWII
against the German U-Boats). When
Spencer noticed that the chocolate
bar in his pocket melted while using
the microwave, it became the food heater we know today. A microwave
oven works by emitting radio microwaves that affect the cells and molecules where water is present, causing them to move extremely fast and
change polarity so that the energy within the cells is transformed into frictional heat, thus warming or “cooking” food.
When it comes to the dangers of using a microwave, we aren’t talking
about the possibility of radiation poisoning or damage caused by the actual
microwave itself—that’s all completely contained within the plastic, metal
outer shell and shielding door—we’re talking about the dangerous effects
that it causes in the food we eat.
The theory is that there are no molecules or cells that are able to
withstand the violent movement microwaves force them to undergo during the heating process without being distorted from their original form or
destroyed completely. This means damage, leaving the cells that make up
our food weakened and impaired, allowing them to become deformed versions of themselves and easily accessible to viruses and microorganisms.
DID YOU KNOW?
The human body cannot metabolize the unknown
by-products created in microwaved food.
THE NITTY-GRITTY
In reported experiments, this distortion was found in microwaved baby
formulas, as the microwave process converted certain trans-amino acids
into synthetic cis-isomers. Also, one of the amino acids was converted to its

d-isomer, which is known to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). In addition, microwaving
milk and cereal grains converted some of their amino acids into carcinogens, which are cancer-causing agents directly involved in the exacerbation of cancer or in the increase of its propagation. There was also a reportedly decreased food value of 60-90% in all foods tested.
THE MICROWAVE ITSELF...
On the other side of this argument is most of the Western world. According
to the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and
Radiological Health, a U.S. Federal Standard limits the amount of microwaves
that can leak from an oven throughout its lifetime and lists it as far below
the exposure level currently considered to be harmful to human health. The
radiation produced by a microwave oven is non-ionizing. It therefore does
not have the cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation such as X-rays
BE YOUR OWN HERO
In the end, while there’s still a lot of
research to be done, it would seem
that our microwave hero isn’t so
super after all. He may not directly
cause cancer, radiation poisoning
or be toxic, but he doesn’t provide
the healthiest options out there.
So maybe instead of turning to his
ever-giving instant gratification
way of eating, you can put your
health before your stomach and eat

failed to identify any carcinogenicity from microwave radiation even with
chronic exposure levels. With the oven door open, the only damage via radiation is by heating, the same as any other cooking device.

BY MYRNALYNN
It’s a fact—most of us want to lose
weight. But do you want to spend all
your time thinking/dreaming/obsessing about it? Or do you want to live a
balanced life? First, let’s start with what
a balanced life is. I break it down into
four categories: Mindset, Community,
Food and Nutrition, and Exercise.
MINDSET
A balanced mindset is establishing
a healthy weight-loss approach and
making a commitment to never be part

CAN YOU LOSE
WEIGHT WITHOUT
TRYING?
Ask yourself the big one—what is
your COMPELLING reason to lose weight
and get healthy? This will be your
driving force. It will help you make
conscious decisions every day regarding what to eat, how much to exercise,

Start Your Own Tribe
Want to help someone in need? Start your own tribe
and show your support. The Human Tribe Project, started by the Foutz family here in the Valley, enables people to unite as Tribes and mobilize support quickly and
easily through www.humantribeproject.com the instant
that a loved one notifies them of a crisis. A Tribe Leader
sets up a Tribe Page, on behalf of the beneficiary, and
includes the beneficiary’s story and an explanation of
why funds need to be raised.
In addition to a blog, guestbook and moveable
web badges, the Tribe Pages contain the Tribe Tag
Store where Tribe Tags can be purchased to financially
support the beneficiary.

All Knowledge is Good Knowledge
We just found this much-needed site. If you know someone with special needs, head to www.knowledgesafari.com. Marci Hersh, a former
classroom teacher and current educational consultant, developed Knowledge Safari as a social networking and review site where people can
connect with others facing the same diagnosis they are dealing with; network about which local doctors, hotels, restaurants and more would
fit their needs; and find an online library of resources. It’s the perfect place to connect and share.

beaming, gorgeous smiles that have earned their cosmetic and family
dental practice a distinguished reputation in the greater Scottsdale, AZ,
area, and beyond. “We have the privilege of enhancing people’s lives
by custom-designing smiles that bolster confidence and improve
quality of life,” says Dr. Gore and Dr. Svans of their comprehensive smile
makeover services—like veneers, tooth whitening, crowns, dental
implants and Invisalign®.
To relax even the most fearful of patients, dim lighting, soothing color palettes, spa candles
and a cell phone-free ambiance set the ideal backdrop for the state-of–the-art care they
render daily. “Creating spectacular smiles in an inviting atmosphere that feel more like an
extension of someone’s home than a dental practice is our primary focus,” says Dr. Gore.
Adds Dr. Svans, “We offer conscious sedation to help reduce anxiety, especially for procedures that last more than three hours.”
With 30 years of combined experience, the dentists garner trust in their abilities. In
particular, Dr. Gore has achieved accreditation by the American Academy of Cosmetic
Dentistry, a distinction he shares with less than 300 dentists worldwide. A proud graduate
of Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Gore also served as a clinical
adjunct professor at the University of the Pacific, relaying the skills and techniques that
earned him the confidence of many, satisfied patients. Also a graduate of the Las Vegas
Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Svans is dedicated to remain on the leading
edge of new advances to ensure the practice is current in its approaches and menu of procedures. Drs. Gore and Dr. Svans feel it’s important to give back to the community, donating
their time and skills to a charitable cause, including the Give Back a Smile program, as well
as the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale.
“Our goal is to provide our patients

A Valley executive trades starched shirts for waders
as he masters the fine art of fly fishing.
Along with a successful career as a partner at Grant Thornton LLP, Brad Preber
has managed to create a life that artfully blends family, fitness, a commitment
to being a leader in charity initiatives, and his lifelong love of fly fishing. The
50-year-old Preber keeps his waders next to his business suits, and explains, “Fly
fishing is a way to keep old friendships alive, or alternatively, a way to foster business relationships…There’s really no better way to build a business relationship
than to fish hard with somebody for two or three days out in the wilderness.”
Beyond using fly fishing as a business bonding activity, Preber draws
further parallels between these two major parts of his life, “Fishing and business have a lot in common. The three things they really share are preparation,
patience and perseverance.” As with any good business plan, researching and
doing his homework before a fly fishing excursion just makes good sense. “You
have to basically do some research on the river you’re going to fish so you can
determine what kinds of bugs are hatching at that time of year.” He also prepares by tying his own flies, and explains, “It’s a matter of knowing the right
size, texture and colors of feathers and thread to use to tie the flies.”
If you’re thinking fly fishing is something you can just try out and enjoy
immediately, Preber would tell you that this is where the patience and perseverance come into play. “It actually takes years and years of practice to become talented at the sport so that you can actually relax enough to enjoy it,” he explains.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned (and if you’re into older
music, you’ll understand why I now feel a song
coming on), but there are certain things I don’t
want to know about you.
Forgive me if that sounds harsh, please. I just
find that too many people want to share with others
things we used to think of as “personal.”
I should add that I’m not so old that I’m uninterested in matters of a sexual nature (as regular
visitors to this space already know). It’s just that
I don’t want to know all the gritty details of the
“personal” matters of people I know and converse
with on a regular or occasional basis. There is such
a thing as too much information (referred to by
some as “TMI”). In this area, it’s often Way TMI.
Am I the only one who doesn’t need to hear
meticulous menstrual details of the life of a woman I
barely know? I was once discussing weight-loss with
a woman, who told me that there was a seven-10 day
section of every month when she didn’t get on a scale,
because she blew up like a balloon and had cramps
that would make any man weep, and that afterwards
she bled like a stuck pig. Thanks for sharing.
Another friend of mine (and I sincerely hope he
doesn’t read this) told me that after having sex with
his first wife, he would often give himself pleasure in
a solo activity (he was more specific than I’m being),

I also had a woman imply, very clearly, that she and her husband really
enjoyed each other’s mouths. Ok, good.
This even extends to what’s often referred to in another TLA (that stands for
“Three Letter Abbreviation”) as PDA or Public Displays of Affection. I don’t get
bent out of shape when I see a couple kiss, hold hands or hug. It doesn’t even
bother me if a couple starts French kissing in front of me (as long as it’s not two
employees behind the counter of the post office). But when a couple of lovers
start putting their hands all over each other’s bodies and reach inside each other’s clothes, that’s a little over the top (or in some cases, under the bottom). This
is a case of a PDA providing TMI about a particular aspect of their relationship.
The problem with TMI is that it’s a touch intrusive. It’s kind of like pushing

A LIFE
RECLAIMED:
CAROLANN’S STORY
How SottoPelle® created a total transformation
Carolann Tutera felt awful – and she didn’t know why.
Her energy was gone, replaced by extra weight; she was soaking the sheets with night
sweats, and a near-permanent bad mood had sucked the joy from her life. “I was miserably
mean,” she says. But she chalked it up to the unpleasant effects of aging, thinking she had to
live with the hand she was dealt.
Then Carolann turned an ear to the buzz in the waiting room of her husband’s clinic. Working as
an OB/GYN at the time, Dr. Gino Tutera was developing an impressive clientele. Women were flying
in from all around the country, flocking to see Dr. Tutera – but it wasn’t just his bedside manner making
him a well-known name. It was an innovative treatment called bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy, and it was giving women their lives back. Listening to these women rave about the effects,
Carolann decided she had nothing to lose by giving BHRT a try.
It was a smart move; baseline labs revealed that Carolann had the hormonal levels of a
woman far beyond her age. Soon, with the help of Dr. Tutera and his revolutionary hormone
replacement therapy, Carolann’s life did a dramatic turnaround. She slept better, regained her
usual high energy levels, felt happier, and lost the stubborn pounds she’d packed on. Even her
skin looked smoother and brighter. “People thought I’d had work done,” she says.
Ever since then, Carolann has been one of the leading champions for her husband’s cause
– and his SottoPelle® hormone pellet therapy has skyrocketed as increasingly more people,
men and women alike, have learned of the amazing benefits it can offer. “My job is to help you
improve your quality of life so you can enjoy your life,” says Dr. Tutera. An individualized dosage
of natural, plant-derived hormones restores levels to perfect equilibrium; the effective pellet
delivery system ensures a steady stream of hormones is available when the body needs it most.
The result is a return to an optimal, youthful balance – and, for people like Carolann, a return to
their former, vibrant selves.
“It absolutely changed my life,” she says. “It has made such a huge impact in my life, and my
relationships with others.” Now she enjoys watching others undergo the same thrilling transformation,
and sharing their delight as they regain a vitality once thought to be gone forever. It’s as though
SottoPelle® patients have found the proverbial Fountain of Youth – in convenient pellet form.
