Hometown Spotlight Road Show

leaders came together on Wednesday,
October 7 to thank
the manufacturing,
distribution and industry service companies in Morristown
and Hamblen County. The annual Industrial Appreciation
Breakfast held at
First Presbyterian

This year’s
event theme also highlighted the global impact of our
industries. Board Chair Pete Barile remarked to
those attending that it is estimated that products made
in Morristown are used, in some way, by over 100
million people worldwide each day.
Special recognition was given to those companies who reported growth during 2015 either
through building expansion, capital investment or job
creation. Also, those companies celebrating a significant anniversary were acknowledged. Several companies were recognized for their participation in the
L.E.A.P. grant programs.

n Monday, October 12th WBIR will feature Morristown as its Hometown Spotlight, according to
Chamber Director of Tourism, Anne Ross. Ross had
been assisting WBIR-TV staff in setting up the logistics
of the visit. Morristown is the next stop on a six-part
roadshow series spotlighting towns across East Tennessee.
The broadcast will take place on the Morristown
SkyMart near the Millennium Square Garage, on the
Main Street side of the street. WBIR talent will spend
one hour visiting with locals, and highlighting the places, activities, and organizations that define each community.
“We really wanted to show off what makes East
Tennessee such a special place to call home, and with
the Hometown Spotlight series, we have the opportunity
to get out there and enjoy all that the communities have
to offer,” said Beth Haynes, WBIR-TV 10News anchor.
The entire community is invited to attend WBIRTV’s Hometown Spotlight road show. At the culmination of each visit, WBIR-TV crew members will take a
community photo including all road show attendees,
standing in the shape of a heart. All six community heart
photographs from each community visited will be featured in the lobby of WBIR-TV. The town with the largest number of locals present in the photograph will win
bragging rights and named the East Tennessee
hometown with ‘the most heart.’
The community heart photo will take place near
the broadcast on the lower Morristown SkyMart level.
Those wishing to be part of the photo should arrive between 4:00 and 4:30 pm to guarantee inclusion in the
photo.

A
s this is the month where we
highlight and appreciate our
existing industry, I find it prudent
that we share some numbers with
you to demonstrate their importance to our community.
The biggest and most important numbers to me are the job
growth numbers. Everyone wants a
job, or at least they say they do,
and the importance of our existing
industry is that they create 90% of
the job growth within our community. The best part about this
growth is that it is very difficult to
find an industry that isn’t hiring
right now.
Industrial jobs in our community are more than jobs; they
are careers with amazing growth
potential. Just yesterday I was with
an existing industry looking to add
28 jobs next year. Their wages
range from $14-$20 an hour with a
very nice benefit package and the
ability to be promoted from within.
Just with companies I speak
with regularly, there is potential
for over 1,000 new jobs in the next
3 years alone. These numbers are
staggering and larger than
Volkswagen’s first three years in
Chattanooga. Our existing industries receive a fraction of the fanfare of the VW project, but I appreciate working with these companies that have invested in our
community for years, hired our
residents, payed taxes to fund edu-
cation and supported multiple programs throughout our community.
There is a trust that comes
from working with local companies and I have found none better
than right here in Morristown Tennessee. Thank these industries and
their employees for the hard work
they do in supplying the world
with products only made here in
Morristown. Be proud that Morristown is a community of over 100
unique and diverse industries that
employ almost 10,000 residents
from our region.

and look forward to many more
years of your growth in our community.
Junior Achievement’s JA Biztown Seeking Volunteers
JA BizTown is a fifth-grade program where students learn about economics, running a
business and handling
personal finances. For the past 4-6 weeks, students have been following the curriculum provided
to their teachers through Junior Achievement. Now it is time for the students to travel to Clinton, TN to visit BizTown.
On the day of their visit students will experience firsthand what it takes to operate a business. Each student will have
a different role in the operation of 17 public and private enterprises including retail shops, a bank, TV, a radio station,
a newspaper and a health center. Students will work in their businesses and get paid is BizTown Bucks twice during their
work day.
Volunteers are a vital part of the smooth operation of the Town. JA BizTown staff members are assigned to each
business to assist and answer questions throughout the day, but the volunteers play a key role. Their role is to provide guidance and assistance to the students, check to make sure the students are on task doing their jobs throughout the day and to
assist the students in following the break schedule. Volunteers must make the commitment to participate in a 1 hour training
prior to the BizTown visit and remain for the full 4 1/2 hour BizTown session. They must also bring a sack lunch.
Eight Hamblen County schools are seeking volunteers for their trips to BizTown. They are listed with the date they
will be making the trip. Fairview Marguerite (10/28), Hillcrest (10/29), John Hay (11/18), Lincoln Elementary (10/30), Union Heights (11/18), West Elementary (12/11), Whitesburg (12/11) and Witt (10/30).

Leadership Morristown Class Visits West High Freshman Academy
M
embers of the 2015 Leadership Morristown Class went back to school on September 1 when they toured
the new Freshman Academy wing of Morristown Hamblen High School West. Principal Jeff Kinsler served as
host during the visit, and teacher Kim Hall and her class members shared their thoughts and experiences with the
Leadership participants. In addition to West High, Leadership Morristown also visited Russellville Primary
School Pre-K and
spent the morning
with Dr. Dale Lynch
and members of his
administrative team.
During the afternoon, Leadership
Morristown toured
Walters State Community College and
participated in a panel discussion with a
Workforce Development Team.
Later in September, Leadership
Morristown participants held sessions
on Arts, Culture &
Recreation and
HealthCare. During these sessions, they visited local parks, Rose Center, the Hamblen County Health Department and Morristown Hamblen HealthCare System.
Sessions will continue in October and November.
