Newsletter Week 5 060309
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of John XXIII College
Last week I had the privilege of attending a
meeting at St Ignatius College, Riverview. The
meeting brought together the Heads and
Rectors of Jesuit and Partner schools from
around Australia. We were very fortunate to
work with Fr. Tom Roach sj who is the
Secretary for Education for the Society of Jesus
in Rome. One of the imperatives he spoke of
was the responsibility of Jesuit and partner
Schools to help form all members of the
community—students, staff, parents and the
associates of the College.
Schools gave
reports of initiatives they were involved in to
meet this end. Many at the meeting were very
interested in our INIGO programme, run
through the College by Mr Murray Graham.
INIGO aims to help form parents, past
students, staff members and members of the
public in aspects of spirituality (particularly
Ignatian Spirituality).
I draw to your attention to two presentations for
Inigo next week by Fr. Jamie Calder sj, who is
our current College Chaplain. Perhaps your
children have already mentioned Fr. Jamie who
blends deep faith, high intelligence and a quirky
sense of humour into all his presentations. I
have no doubt these two sessions will engage
all who attend:


Tuesday 10th March
The Spirituality of Relationships
Wednesday 11th March
Blockages to Authentic Relationships.
Both sessions will be held in the McKillop
Room commencing at 7.30pm. Further details
are included in this Newsletter.
Next week there will be much activity around
the College as we welcome thirty six visitors
from our Sister Loreto Schools around
Australia. Students from each of the Loreto
Schools in Australia will visit the College for
three days. Small groups of our Year 10
students will visit one of the Loreto Schools in
Ballarat,( Vic), Toorak, (Vic), Marryatville, (SA),
Coorparoo (Qld), Kirribilli (NSW), and
Normanhurst (NSW). This programme, “Loreto
Connect” is part of the 400th anniversary
celebrations of the Institute of The Blessed
Virgin Mary (The Loreto Sisters).
I am sure our students will extend great
hospitality to our visitors and that our
travellers will be great ambassadors for John
XXIII College. An enormous thank you to Mr
Antulov for coordinating this huge logistical
programme.
We are indeed fortunate to have two such
deep traditions as the Loretos and Jesuits in
our Foundation.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Anne Fry
Principal
Reflection
In this first week of Lent, we are called to
‘repent’. This word ‘repent’ can be something
of an old fashioned religious word perhaps
conjuring up images of travelling religious
revivalists in tents calling ‘sinners’ to sobriety
and ‘moral’ or ‘upright’ living. In fact, as
Jesus is using it, it means simply, ‘open your
hearts anew’ or ‘change your hearts’.
Interestingly, in the Gospel of last Sunday,
this call to renewed-heart-living was
immediately preceded by Jesus’ temptation in
the desert by the Satan, the Accuser. In his
invitation, Satan’s quest is to have Jesus use
his ‘own’ power.
Jesus refuses, of Issue 05
course. He knows that there is no such thing
as one’s ‘own’ power, there is only that power
which comes from knowing that we are
daughters and sons of the One God. This is
the power of ‘love’.
Jesus’ author-ity, then, flows from a
relationship of love in which he knows his
Father is the Author of all that is and
has. Lent comes to remind us that our hearts
are made for love and so our lives are for
giving and receiving this love in relationships
of kindness, honour and respect. When we
do this, our Author is visible and so our
authority flows. Thus, do we ‘renew our
hearts’.
Peace,
Fr Jamie Calder sj - College Chaplain

Around the Primary
What is EMU?
This year in the Junior Primary, a new mathematics
intervention program is being implemented. The
program is called EMU ( Extending Mathematical
Understanding).
This program offers support for
children on three levels, the classroom mathematics
program, intervention sessions and home activities.
This is a strategic and comprehensive program based
upon the recognition that all children can succeed in
mathematics when given sufficient time and support.
Research has shown that the early years of schooling
are significant in the acquisition of mathematical skills
and understandings. Therefore, early intervention for
students experiencing difficulties grasping
mathematical concepts is the ideal. All children in
Years One and Two along with some children in Year
Three will be individually tested. From the information
gained from the testing, teachers will be able to
develop programs in class that are designed for
children’s different abilities.
Some children require more intensive specialised
mathematics instruction than that offered by the regular
classroom program. The EMU Program is conducted
by a qualified specialist mathematics intervention
teacher (Mrs Liz Gardner) and is designed for children
in their second year of schooling. The EMU program
aims to accelerate children’s mathematics learning so
that after 10-20 weeks of small group sessions each
day, they may participate in the classroom program
within the average band for their cohort. This program
will commence in Term Two.

Health Information
Allergy Awareness
The College has several students who have severe allergic
reaction to nuts. This reaction is called Anaphylaxis. It
characteristically occurs soon after exposure to the allergen
and importantly these reactions can be very serious and
require urgent treatment. The College has Anaphylaxis
Guidelines which implement practical strategies to minimise the
risk of exposure to known allergens for our allergic students
and create a ‘nut friendly’ environment.
As a preventative measure could we please request your
support with the following:
 Please do not send nuts or nut products to school with
your child.
 Encourage your child to respect children who have food
allergies.
 Teach your child not to share food, drink , food utensils or
containers.
 Encourage your child to wash and dry hands before and
after eating.
 If your child has a food anaphylaxis, it is preferred that food
for your child is supplied from home.
 When a child with a food allergy in primary school has a
lunch order could parents ensure their food allergy is written
in ‘red’ on lunch bag.
 If your child has a food allergy, teach them to avoid foods
that may trigger their allergy. If they are unsure what
ingredient is in a food, they should not eat it.
 It is recommended that students with severe food allergies
wear a medic alert bracelet/necklet.
 Empower your child to manage his/her allergy.

What are the 6Rs?
They are attributes that we want our students to have
acquired by the time they leave school. The 6Rs enable
learners to become independent inquirers, reliable team
workers, self managers and effective participants of
society. The nurturing of the 6Rs at John XXIII College
provide a platform to monitor attitudes and behaviour
which in turn supports successful learning.
Details of the 6Rs can be found on the College web page:
www. Johnxxiii.edu.au. Please note that RESPECT is the
critical attribute which underpins all the other “Rs”.
RESPECT for self and others, is about knowing my
qualities, my uniqueness and valuing the unique qualities of
others and knowing that I can make a difference.
What parents can do to support the 6Rs ?
Talk to your child about the 6Rs. Ask your son/daughter
how they could use the 6Rs in class .

New Parents – Meet Your
Tutor Group Teacher
On Monday 16 March, there is an opportunity for a brief one-onone meeting with your son or daughter’s Tutor Group teacher in
the Ignatian Centre (Library). This is the person they meet every

issues. In many cases, your son or daughter will have the same
Tutor Group teacher for their whole high school experience. A
letter will be sent home for you to outline your appointment
preferences. Times available are 3.20pm – 4.00pm.
