He was born Karol Wojtyla on May 20, 1920. He was ordained on November 1, 1946. He was elected pope on October 16, 1987. He went back home to God on April 2, 2005. From the day of his funeral people were shouting “Santo Subito”!!!! From November 8th, 2005 we felt his special presence here at St. Stanislaus when we were gifted with one of his miters. From May 21, 2009 we began having our monthly Mass with the intention of his beatification, then canonization. Now, it’s all done. The thousands of prayer intentions placed at the base of the reliquary shrine holding his miter (and soon to be holding a relic of his blood-stained cassock form the 1981 assassination attempt) have been quietly placed at the foot of our altar during each of our Third Thursday Masses. The handful of believers who showed up at practically all of those Masses venerated his relic and prayed for his intercession. Now he is officially recognized by the universal Church as a saint! - the same man who back in 1969 offered Mass here at St. Stanislaus and gifted us with the relic of his successor as Archbishop of Krakow, St. Stanislaus. How appropriate that our Holy Father Francis designated this very day, the feast of Divine Mercy, as the date of his canonization along with that of Pope John XXIII. Writing this article I look forward with great anticipation to sharing the experience of the live broadcast here on Sunday morning at 4 o’clock. What a glorious Easter season this is turning out for our people!! First Easter, then the canonization, then the visit by one of our parishes closest friends, Cardinal Dziwisz on May 15th!!! The months of April and May will shout God’s mercy and love for us in so many of these events as well as the numerous recipients of the sacraments at our parish. This Easter season is a great time of festival almost to the point of overdose. Yet, after all the preparation and reflection we did during the season of Lent, we certainly deserve it. What we prayed for we got….now what? What effect will today’s canonization have on you personally? Will it make you re-examine the life and writings of St. John Paul II? Will it make you kneel at the shrine and ask for his intercession? Will you add a written personal request? Will you study his life and try to emulate his actions to grow closer to Jesus through Mary? It’s nice to know that a recognized saint actually walked among us, dined with us, prayed with us. Not many people can say the same. An extraordinary man lived humbly, with numerous crosses, faults and virtues, and has now been raised to sainthood. Each of us can certainly do the same—it is always within our reach. To become a saint you must want to be like Christ. To become a saint you must be willing to endure hardship and crosses. To become a saint you must be able to say NO to the culture of death and YES to the culture of life. All of this can happen with the help of God, through the intercession of His saints, through the conscious rejection of evil. Today we invite you to visit the shrine area and take home one of the special prayer cards available for this historical occasion. May the prayer on the back somehow increase your own faith, allow you to be open to God’s grace and possibly usher you down the same path of sainthood. Not possible? If you think that, it will never happen. If you think you can be a saint, then you are well on your way. There is no reason why anyone of us cannot join those ranks and share that great honor. THANK YOU! …...from a pre-canonization news conference….. Father Giovangiuseppe Califano, the postulator for John XXIII, said as a 15 year old seminarian Angelo Roncalli was already making resolutions that were intended to help him become a saint for real. He said Pope John’s sainthood was characterized by a deep humility and he was both a shepherd and a father. Roncalli, he continued, opened new horizons to the Church by convening the Second Vatican Council and was a capable communicator who by using simple every-day expressions succeeded in entering immediately into the hearts of people. Father Califano went on to explain how the words “obedience and peace” were not just Roncalli’s episcopal motto but were at the root of his sainthood as they characterized his life at the service of the Church. The postulator for Pope John Paul II’s cause, Monsignor Slawomir Oder, spoke at the briefing of how the friends of Karol Wojtyla at university described him as a “future saint” because they were so struck by his prayer habits and his reflections on the value of life. He said John Paul’s profound mysticism encouraged him to personally live out the mystery of God in his own life. ….the words of Blessed John Paul II on the occasion of the beatification of now St. John XXIII which took place on September 3, 2000: "Today we contemplate in the Glory of the Lord another Pontiff, John XXIII, the Pope who impressed the world with the friendliness of his manner which radiated the remarkable goodness of his soul. Everyone remembers the image of Pope John's smiling face and his outstretched arms embracing the whole world. How many people were won over by his simplicity of heart, combined with a broad experience of people and things! The breath of newness he brought certainly did not concern doctrine, but rather the way to explain it; his style of speaking and acting was new, as was his friendly approach to ordinary people and to the powerful of the world. It was in this spirit that he called the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, thereby turning a new page in the Church's history: Christians heard themselves called to proclaim the Gospel with renewed courage and greater attentiveness to the "signs" of the times. The Council was a truly prophetic insight of this elderly Pontiff who, even amid many difficulties, opened a season of hope for Christians and for humanity. In the last moments of his earthly life, he entrusted his testament to the Church: "What counts the most in life is blessed Jesus Christ, his holy Church, his Gospel, truth and goodness". We too wish to receive this testament, as we glorify God for having given him to us as a Pastor. REMEMBER YOUR GIFT CARDS! …words of Pope Benedict XVI on the occasion of the beatification of now St. John Paul II…. Dear brothers and sisters, today our eyes behold, in the full spiritual light of the risen Christ, the beloved and revered figure of John Paul II. Today his name is added to the host of those whom he proclaimed saints and blesseds during the almost twenty-seven years of his pontificate, thereby forcefully emphasizing the universal vocation to the heights of the Christian life, to holiness, taught by the conciliar Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium. All of us, as members of the people of God – bishops, priests, deacons, laity, men and women religious – are making our pilgrim way to the heavenly homeland where the Virgin Mary has preceded us, associated as she was in a unique and perfect way to the mystery of Christ and the Church. Karol Wojtyła took part in the Second Vatican Council, first as an auxiliary Bishop and then as Archbishop of Kraków. He was fully aware that the Council’s decision to devote the last chapter of its Constitution on the Church to Mary meant that the Mother of the Redeemer is held up as an image and model of holiness for every Christian and for the entire Church. This was the theological vision which Blessed John Paul II discovered as a young man and subsequently maintained and deepened throughout his life. A vision which is expressed in the scriptural image of the crucified Christ with Mary, his Mother, at his side. This icon from the Gospel of John (19:25-27) was taken up in the episcopal and later the papal coat-of-arms of Karol Wojtyła: a golden cross with the letter “M” on the lower right and the motto “Totus tuus”, drawn from the well-known words of Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort in which Karol Wojtyła found a guiding light for his life: “Totus tuus ego sum et omnia mea tua sunt. Accipio te in mea omnia. Praebe mihi cor tuum, Maria – I belong entirely to you, and all that I have is yours. I take you for my all. O Mary, give me your heart” (Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, 266). Jan Paweł II i Jan XXIII: drogi do kanonizacji Jako precedensowe określił ks. prałat Sławomir Oder decyzje papieża Franciszka dotyczące kanonizacji błogosławionych papieży Jana XXIII i Jana Pawła II. Kloch. Zmartwychwstał Chrystus, Alleluja! Spiewajcie Panu, Alleluja!
