Święty Paweł Pierwszy Pustelnik
Saint Paul the First Hermit
Paweł urodził się w Tebach,
starożytnej stolicy faraonów - w 228 r.
Za jego czasów Teby były już tylko
małą wioską. Pierwsze lata spędził
szczęśliwie w domu rodzinnym. Około
240 r. rozpoczęły się prześladowania
Kościoła
przez
Dioklecjana.
Dowiedziawszy się, że jego szwagierpoganin z powodu jego bogactwa
planuje
wydać
go
w
ręce
prześladowców,
Paweł
porzucił
wszystko, co posiadał, odszedł na
pustkowie i zamieszkał w jaskini.
Prześladowanie trwało krótko, bo
zaledwie dwa lata, ale Paweł tak
dalece zasmakował w ciszy pustyni, że postanowił tam pozostać na
zawsze. Jako pustelnik spędził samotnie 90 lat! Przez cały ten czas
zanosił do Boga swe gorące modlitwy, żywiąc się tylko daktylami i
połówką chleba, którą codziennie przynosił mu kruk. Kiedy był
bliski śmierci, odwiedził go św. Antoni, pustelnik. Tego dnia kruk
miał przynieść Pawłowi cały bochenek. Nagość swego ciała od
znoju i chłodu chronił Paweł jedynie palmowymi liśćmi. Legenda ta
znalazła swoje odbicie w herbie zakonu paulinów, którzy obrali
sobie św. Pawła Pustelnika za swojego głównego patrona: kruk na
palmie z bochenkiem chleba. Zmarł mając 113
lat w 341 r. Miał oddać Bogu ducha na ręku św.
Antoniego. Kiedy ten był w kłopocie, jak
wykopać grób dla przyjaciela, według podania
miały zjawić się dwa lwy i ten grób wykopać.
Dwa lwy znalazły się dlatego również w herbie
paulinów. Zakon paulinów czci go jako swego
patrona; czczą go także piekarze i tkający
dywany. W ikonografii św. Paweł Pustelnik
przedstawiany jest w tkanej sukni z liści
palmowych. Jego atrybuty: kruk z chlebem w
dziobie, lwy kopiące grób, przełamany chleb.
Saint Paul was born in Egypt in about the
year 228. Fearing that the tortures of a
terrible persecution might endanger his
Christian perseverance, he retired into a
remote village. But his pagan brother-inlaw denounced him, and Saint Paul,
rather than remain where his faith was in
danger, entered the barren desert, trusting
that God would supply his wants. And
his confidence was rewarded; for on the
spot to which Providence led him he
found the fruit of a palm-tree for food, its
leaves for clothing, and the water of a
spring for drink. His first plan was to return to the world when the
persecution was over; but tasting great delights in prayer and
penance, he remained for the rest of his life, ninety years, in
penance, prayer and contemplation. God revealed his existence to
Saint Anthony, who sought him for three days. Seeing a thirsty she
-wolf run through an opening in the rocks, Anthony followed her
to look for water and found Paul. They knew each other at once,
and praised God together. While Saint Anthony was visiting him, a
raven brought them a loaf of bread, and Saint Paul said, See how
good God is! For sixty years this bird has brought me half a loaf
each day; now at your coming, Christ has doubled the provision
for His servants. The two religious passed the
night in prayer, then at dawn Paul told Anthony
that he was about to die, and asked to be buried
in the cloak given to Anthony by Saint
Athanasius. Anthony hastened back to fetch it,
and when he was returning to Paul, he saw his
co-hermit rising to heaven in glory. He found
his dead body kneeling as in prayer, and saw
two lions come and dig his grave. Saint Paul,
The Patriarch of Hermits, died in his one
hundred and thirteenth year.

Czy współczesny człowiek przegrał to, co może być
tak piękne i ważne w życiu? Czy dar bycia
mężczyzną i kobietą, dar miłości – także miłości
cielesnej nic już nie znaczy? Nie, tak nie można
mówić. Boży dar wciąż jest i będzie blisko
człowieka. Musimy tylko na nowo poukładać sobie
niektóre sprawy. Pierwsza i podstawowa to
obecność Jezusa przy nas i w nas. Tak, jak w
dzisiejszej ewangelii – za Jezusem idzie dwóch
ludzi. On ich zaprasza, a oni, zauroczeni jego osobą,
wrócą do Niego, by związać z nim swoje życie. I to
jest dla chrześcijanina pierwszy krok, także w
porządkowaniu problemów płciowości: trzeba być
blisko Jezusa. Potrzebna jest wiara, potrzebna jest modlitwa,
potrzebne jest traktowanie ewangelii jako konstytucji swojego życia,
potrzebne jest ciągłe wracanie do siły sakramentu pokuty, potrzebna
jest duchowa energia, którą czerpiemy z Komunii świętej. Apostoł
pisząc do Koryntian, wskazuje na podstawę bycia człowiekiem –
wskazuje na ciało, wskazuje na ducha. Ciało nie jest złe. Więcej –
ciało jest cudownym darem Boga. Tak wielkim Jego darem, że
można je nazwać świątynią Boga.
John the Baptist is still greatly imbued
with the manifestation of the Holy Spirit at
the Baptism of Jesus. The voice of the
Father still resounds in his spirit.
Ceaselessly he thinks of the Messiah of
God, who came to earth to reveal the Love
of the Father who wants, in his beloved
Son, to save all men! And on the day after
that memorable day when he was chosen
to baptize the Lord Jesus, John the Baptist
could not stop himself from crying out, in
the Holy Spirit: Behold, the Lamb of God! John points to the
Messiah, the Savior, Christ Jesus: he indicates the Way to follow,
he shows us where the Door to Heaven is, he cries out, to those
who are willing to listen, that Love is here! Already, the Heart of
Jesus is open; already, the Heart of God has opened up to allow us
to see what mercy awaits all those who truly want to approach the
Heart of Christ! For, when the heavens opened and the voice of the
Father was heard, the Love of God already flowed out from the
Heart of Jesus, announcing the blood and water of baptism that
would pour forth on the Cross of Calvary.

Pierwszą
paulińską
wspólnotę zgromadził z
rozproszonych po lasach
i
grotach
skalnych
pustelników, Bartłomiej,
biskup Pecs. Dla niej w roku 1225 wybudował konwent i kościół
pod wezwaniem św. Jakuba na górze Patacs i nadał pierwszą regułę
ustalającą styl życia klasztornego. Jednakże za ojca i założyciela
zakonu paulińskiego uważa się bł. Euzebiusza z Ostrzyhomia,
który pod wpływem objawienia przedstawiającego wiele małych
płomieni, łączących się w jeden wielki płomień, założył na górze
Pilis klasztor Św. Krzyża, gdzie od razu pustelnicy zaczęli żyć
według wzoru św. Pawła Pierwszego Pustelnika, kultywując
szczególnie nabożeństwo do Matki Bożej. W 1250 r. oba klasztory
połączyły się pod przewodnictwem bł. Euzebiusza. Nowo
utworzona społeczność zakonna od 1263 roku przyjęła nazwę
Braci Świętego Pawła Pierwszego Pustelnika. W roku 1308 legat
papieża Klemensa V, nadał zakonowi w imieniu stolicy
Apostolskiej regułę św. Augustyna i oficjalnie zatwierdził Zakon
Św. Pawła Pierwszego Pustelnika. W 1309 r. zostają zatwierdzone
pierwsze konstytucje zakonne. Z Węgier do Polski sprowadził
Paulinów książę Władysław Opolczyk w 1382 r., do Częstochowy.
The Pauline Fathers originated in Hungary.
Bishop Bartholomew of Pécs wanted to found
a monastery dedicated to deep prayer and
penance. This monastery St James was built
from 1215 to 1225 on the mountain of Patacs
and Bishop Bartholomew gave the monks first
Rules. The real founding father of the order
was however the blessed Eusebius of
Esztergom. He had a vision in which many
small flames ran together to become one large
fire. Inspired by this vision, he founded the monastery of the Holy
Cross on the mountain Pilis. St. Paul of Thebes was their model
right from the start. In 1250 both Holy Cross and St. James
merged to become a single community under blessed Eusebius.
This was the beginning and the core of the Pauline Fathers’ order.
Due to the support of St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Urban IV. gave
the new order his blessing in 1262. The order was officially
recognized by Rome in 1308 by Pope Clement V., who gave them
the Rule of St. Augustine and confirmed their first constitution a
year later. The Pauline Fathers came to Poland in 1382 to keep
watch over the Sacred picture of the Black Madonna, that Prince
Ladislaus of Opole brought to Czestochowa.

Ojciec Sebastian Hanks urodził sie w
Norwich, w Connecticut w 1950 roku. Na
chrzcie świętym otrzymał imię Józef.
Uczęszczał do szkoły parafialnej imienia sw.
Józefa. W trakcie uczęszczania do high school
był bardzo aktywnym czlonkiem w swojej
rodzinnej parafii. 1 sierpnia 1968 roku,
o. Sebastian wstąpił do Zakonu Świętego
Pawła Pierwszego Pustelnika. 7 lipca 1969
roku przyjął habit zakonny oraz imię
Sebastian, w tym samym czasie został przyjęty do nowicjatu w
Doylestown przaz o. Michała Zembrzuskiego. 16 lipca 1970 roku
o. Sebastian złożył swoją pierwszą profesję zakonną, czyli
pierwsze śluby zakone oraz został wysłany do Saint Mary`s
College in Orchard Lake in Michigan, aby rozpocząć studia
filozoficzno-teologiczne przygotowujące do pracy duszpasterskiej.
Świecenia kapłanskie przyjął z rąk J. Eksc. Ks. Bpa Daniela
Patryka Reilly 30 maja 1981 roku i został inkardynowany do
diecezji Norwich w Connecticut. Pracował tam jako wikariusz oraz
proboszcz parafii. 1 lipca 2002 roku
o. Sebastian powrócił do Zakonu Paulinów
i powtórnie został przyodziany w pauliński
habit 8 września 2002 roku. 15 stycznia
2003 roku, w Uroczystość Św. Pawła
I Pustelnika o. Sebastian odnowił swoje
pierwsze śluby zakonne czystości, ubóstwa
i posłuszeństwa.
Father Sebastian Hanks; whose baptismal
name is Joseph was born in Norwich,
Connecticut in 1950. He was the son of Henry
J. and Marcella (Smolen) Hanks. He attended
his parish school of St. Joseph, went to
Norwich Free Academy for high school.
During those years Father Sebastian was very active in his home
parish. On August 1, 1968, Father entered the Pauline Fathers and
Brothers Order and served in various duties while trying out his
vocation. On July 7, 1969, he received the habit and the name of
Sebastian from Father Micheal Zembrzuski and entered the
Novitiate at that time in Doylestown with another brother. On July
16th, 1970, Father Sebastian took his first vows and that August
was sent to St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake, Michigan to
begin College studies for the priesthood. He graduated from
College in 1974 and decided to teach school and take two years
leave of absence before continuing to study for the priesthood. In
1977 he was incardinated into his home Diocese of Norwich,
Connecticut and after receiving his Masters of Divinity from
Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY in December
1980, he was assigned to St. Mary of Czestochowa Church in
Middletown, Connecticut until his priesthood ordination on
May 30, 1981 by the Most Reverend Daniel Patrick Reilly
then Bishop of Norwich. On the first day of July 2002, Fr.
Sebastian returned, to be re-invested in the white Pauline habit
on September 8th, 2002, taking first vows again on January
15th, 2003, the Solemnity of St. Paul the I Hermit.
