Erasmus in Czestochowa Czestochowa is a beautiful city of the southern Poland, mostly known for the religious part of it, which is Jasna Góra Monastery, home of the famous Black Madonna painting. Every year millions of pilgrims come to visit the shrine. There are also a Lusatian culture excavation site museum in the city, the ruins of a medieval castle in Olsztyn, and a desert approximately 20 kilometers from the city Centre. Which is a must go place whenever anyone finds themselves in Czestochowa. There are also many beautiful chatedrals worth visiting. Jasna Góra Monastery A part of Olsztyn Castle (from Erasmus trip) Some of the beautiful Chatedrals from Czestochowa For going out during the day, there are some cosy, nice places you can try, like Caffe del Corso, Sweet Home and Coffee, Boulangerie, Consonni. There you can eat delicious desserts and icecream, and have a marvelous coffee and also different types of tea. If you are a fast foods or a pizza lover you cand try Kebab Bar, Gril Bar, Gyros Bar, Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald’s and a must try is Mega Pizza, located near Maluch. Fancy „Boulangerie” Cozy terrace of „Sweet Home and Coffee” MegaPizza! The city has a very busy and good night life compared to the fact that it’s a relative small city and a very catholic culture. There are lots of pubs, differing from Irish to Italian, Chinese to Mexican and also lots of places with traditional foods(must try Pierogi). Oslo will be worth checking out when in Czestochowa, it is a bar that has its own local brewery where they brew all the beer they sell, one of their trade mark is the honey beer. Another unique local is the Bar Pierożek. It has a medieval theme and an interesting green beer can be found in the bar called zielone piwo. The bar is located in the middle of the city. There are many other bars which are too numerous to mention. Also, there are lots of night clubs, one of them is Mohito, not too far from the university and its mostly attended by students. There is also a students only place, called Ryval, located downstairs Maluch dormitory, which is really nice! There you get to organise students parties with Erasmus people, or birthday parties. Here you have a picture from our integration party in Ryval: Some events you should try are the speedway (żużel) event, one of the biggest sporting event in the city and also in Poland. Another is the Juvenalia festival, which is a student based event, featuring a three days life concerts for all the students living in Czestochowa. There is also a „market square” in the center of the city, on the boulevard where there are organised concerts and festivals almost every weekend. The city has a Mall named Galeria Jurajska, some cinemas, a new, famous miniature park, paintball terrains, alcohol shops open 24/7, swimming pools, an astronomical observatory, cart racing circuites, so you have no chance to be bored! There are also many places nearby where you can practice sports, like voleyball, basketball, football; there is a full options skating park, near a beautiful alley called Promenada. „Maluch” at night during our barbeque Closeup from „Maluch” parking lot Cart racing Skatepark and playground near Promenada While you are in Poland you must visit Krakow, where you can see the Wawel, royal residence, and the Rynek, old market square. The others city that you can visit with ease are :Warszawa, Wroclaw, Poznan or many castles like Bobolice castle. The area is populated by many castles, worth visiting. Also lakes and thick forests with hiking routes.There are a lot of famous caves having legends about them, and also villans willing to guide you and tell you stories about place’s history. Here we had a wonderful trip trough polish forests and stoped by to eat lunch nearby this lake. The food was all natural and tasting delicious, especially because the fishes were caught from the lake. Transportation is well defined, the city having a modern trainstation, tramway, and also busses that can take you to any part of the city. There are also maps in any station where you can check the route and time of the buss or tram, so it’s almost impossible to get lost. The trainstation Regarding study, the teachers are very helpful and understanding. Mainly the courses are in English, and the University is well equipt, providing a modern environment for all the students. The local people and also the local student students are always excited to meet and talk with the foreign exchange or foreign students. There are a very welcoming environment and a relaxed atmosphere for studying. Though Polish language seems really hard to learn, you can easily find students willing to help you with useful words, which are not so hard to remember. Mainly, polish people are helpful, really warm and nice, educated and environmental friendly. The roads are well maintained and clean, there are no stray dogs and the economy is good; the curency is „zloti”, and living in Czestochowa shouldn’t cost you more that 350 euro per month, including rent, going out and visiting nearby places. The doorms have kitchens where you can cook your meals, to save some money or if eating out is not for you. There are many supermarket where you can benefit from sales or promotions. I recommend traveling outside the city by train, with Student ID card, that gives you great discounts, or with Polskibus, that also has some great offers. Don’t forget to make friends among polish people but also Erasmus students, who can turn this scholarship into an unforgetable experience.
