Dear parishioners and friends,
W niektórych krajach miesiąc sierpień jest ogłoszony miesiącem trzeźwości. Dzieje się tak dlatego, że właśnie w środku lata, najwięcej osób nadużywa alkoholu, czyniąc szkodę nie tylko własnemu zdrowiu, ale także
innym. Niektórzy nadużywają alkoholu z braku roztropności, inni się
upijają, dlatego, że są uzależnieni i nie mogą po prostu przestać pić. Uzależnienie od alkoholu jest nie tylko tragedią osobistą, ale także tragedią
rodzinną i narodową. Z powodu nadużywania alkoholu cierpią rodziny,
osłabiany jest także naród. Człowiekiem pijanym łatwo jest manipulować,
gdyż jego zdolności rozumienia i krytycznego myślenia są osłabione.
Dlatego naziści czy komuniści stawiali na masowe rozpijanie narodu, aby
można nim było rządzić według własnego upodobania.
In some countries, the month of September is labeled the month of
sobriety. This is, because most people abuse alcohol in the middle of
summer, harming not only their own health, but also others. Many
abuse alcohol due to a lack of prudence; others get intoxicated because
they are addicted and really cannot stop drinking. Addiction to alcohol
is not only tragic for the individual, but also, tragic for the family and
nation. Addiction to alcohol causes suffering in the family, and weakens
the nation. A drunken person is easily manipulated, as his ability to understand and his critical thinking is weakened. This is why the Nazis
and Communists relied on mass intoxication of a nation, so that they
could govern as they pleased.
Oprócz ośrodków leczących uzależnionych od alkoholu, potężną bronią
w walce z pijaństwem jest modlitwa. Przy Jezuickiej parafii w Zakopanem
istnieje apostolstwo trzeźwości. W kaplicy klasztornej, przed obrazem
Matki Bożej, co roku przysięgę trzeźwości składa kilka tysięcy ludzi. Przychodzą albo sami, albo przywożą ich bliscy bądź pracodawcy i tam przed
obliczem Maryi przysięgają abstynencję od alkoholu: jedni na kilka tygodni, inni kilka miesięcy, jeszcze inni na kilka lat lub nawet do końca życia.
Osoby, które przychodzą, by ślubować, wiedzą, że sami nie dadzą rady i
potrzebują pomocy z nieba. Maryja odpowiada na ich pragnienie bycia
trzeźwym i wspiera ich swoim wstawiennictwem i modlitwą, tak, że nawet 60 procent składających przysięgę dotrzymuje wierności. Wielu także
wychodzi z uzależnienia całkowicie. Są tego świadectwa spisane w księdze trzeźwości.
Pisze o tym dlatego, że w ubiegłym roku także i w naszej parafii mieliśmy
kilka takich ślubowań. Na własną prośbę, osoby ślubowały przed obrazem Matki Bożej, wobec kapłana wstrzemięźliwość od alkoholu. Po złożeniu przyrzeczenia otrzymały błogosławieństwo i obrazek, na którym
widniała data złożenia ślubów oraz określony przez nich czas wstrzemięźliwości od alkoholu. Nie tylko dla tych osób, ale także dla mnie
przyjmującego śluby, było to niezwykle doświadczenie. Kładąc rękę na
ich ramieniu i modląc się za nich w duchu, czułem, że Maryja przyjmuje
śluby i w jakiś przedziwny sposób obiecuje swoją pomoc.
Piszę to także, dlatego, aby osoby, które mają problem z alkoholem wiedziały, że istnieje w naszej parafii możliwość złożenia ślubów abstynencji
od alkoholu. Aby to uczynić trzeba być trzeźwym, trzeba pragnąć w sercu
uzdrowienia i wierzyć w moc Maryjnej modlitwy. Można to uczynić w
obecności kapłana przed obrazem Maryi, powtarzając słowa ślubowania:
„Wobec Matki Najświętszej i mojego Anioła Stróża, postanawiam abstynencje. Matko Najświętsza, proszę Cię, uwolnij mnie od mego nałogu i
daj mi łaskę wytrwałości Chrystusa i Twoja”.
Osoby te są objęte naszą modlitwą. Polecamy ich Maryi oraz sprawujemy
w ich intencji Eucharystię. Wielka jest moc modlitwy wstawienniczej
Maryi. Prośmy o trzeźwość, kochajmy trzeźwość i bądźmy trzeźwi.
Serdecznie was wszystkich pozdrawiam, przytulam do serca i zanurzam w
niezgłębionym Bożym miłosierdziu.

Besides the ways used to cure the addict of alcohol, a powerful protection in the fight with intoxication is prayer. There is an apostolate for
addiction at the Jesuit parish in Zakopane. Every year, in the cloistered
chapel, thousands of people take the sobriety oath before the portrait of
the Mother of God. They come either themselves or are brought by
relatives or employers, and there, before the image of Mary, vow abstinence from alcohol: some for a few weeks, others for a few months,
still others for a few years, or even until the end of their lives. Individuals, who come to vow, know that they cannot do it on their own and
need help from heaven. Mary responds to their longing to be sober and
supports them with her intercession and prayers, so that as much as
60% of those making the vow remain faithful. Many come out of the
addiction completely. There are recorded witnesses written in the books
of addiction.
I am writing about this today because, during the past year, we have also
had in our parish a few who have taken this vow. At their own request,
individuals vowed before the image of the Mother of God, in the presence of a priest, abstinence from alcohol. After pronouncing the vow,
they received a blessing and a picture, on which was written the date the
vow was made and the length of time they chose to abstain from alcohol. It was not only for the individuals who took the vow, but also for
me accepting the vow, a most unusual witness. Placing my hands on
their shoulders, and praying for them in spirit, I felt, that Mary accepted
their vow and in some strange way promises her help.
I am also writing this so that individuals who have a problem with alcoholism would know that there is an opportunity in our parish to take the
vow of abstinence from alcohol. To do this, one must be sober, must
want with all your heart to be cured, and believe in the power of Marian
prayer. This can be done in the presence of a priest before a picture of
Mary, reciting the words of the vow: “In the presence of the Most Holy
Mother of God and my Guardian Angel, I choose abstinence. Most
Holy Mother, I beg you, free me from my addiction and grant me the
grace of perseverance, Christ’s and yours.
These individuals are supported with our prayers. We recommend them
to Mary and celebrate the Eucharist in their intention. Great is the
strength of prayer through the intercession of Mary. Ask for sobriety,
love sobriety, and be sober.
With heartfelt wishes, I press you to my heart and immerse you into
God’s unfathomable mercy.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wise Fools
When we were in high school, we learned that the word sophomore came from Greek words meaning "wise fools." The idea
was that the second year student thinks he knows it all now, but
still has a lot to learn. The first two readings describe wisdom
versus foolishness. In Proverbs, Wisdom is a woman who invites
us to her banquet, telling us to "forsake foolishness." St. Paul
invites us to give up our ignorance and to know the will of the
Lord, by filling ourselves with the Spirit. Jesus says he himself is
the way to understanding God's will; he gives himself as food and
drink for eternal life. So how will we accept these invitations to
partake of the Wisdom of God?
One way is to read the scriptures every day, even for only 20-30
minutes. Take time to think and pray about what you read. Don't
do all the talking; let God have his chance to be heard. Read
short passages and the footnotes--they can explain some of the
obscure references. The gospels are especially good "food" because of all the examples Jesus gave in his sermons and parables.
Listen to the readings and homily at Mass. The Pastor may have
some insights that make you think. Receive communion often to
be fed with the living Bread. The Church has always taught that
we are fed with both the word and the Eucharist.
An athlete grows in strength by eating well, but he also has to
exercise to tone and strengthen his muscles. If we want to grow
in God's wisdom, we have to exercise our faith. If you have a
friend or relative who is a good example of faith, talk with that
person about how you experience God or your lack of experiences. They may help you see God in ways that never occurred to
you. You could offer to be a sponsor for someone in the RCIA,
and help someone else's faith to grow. Your parish or diocese
may also have on-line resources or discussions.
God never forces himself on anyone. To grow in his Wisdom, we
have to accept it. Ask him for real food and you won't be disappointed. But be patient, God only gives what we are ready to
receive.

AT THE TABLE
In today's first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in
poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her
temple-like home. She doesn't flutter about, nervous with worry.
Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The
guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need
only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a
place at Wisdom's table. There they may and can eat and drink
deeply.
Today's Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus
addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly,
those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are
called and equipped to seek God's will and act on it.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
If the alb is the premier baptismal garment, then why are there
so many other styles of vesture in evidence in our parishes? In
some places, altar servers and other ministers might wear a garment, usually black, called a cassock. Over that is normally worn
a white garment (a "surplice"), reminiscent of the alb but much
shorter, often of starched linen and trimmed with lace. The cassock is not a liturgical garment, but a clerical robe. Its origins lie
in the religious habit of monks. By the late Middle Ages, diocesan priests and clerics increasingly were encouraged to emulate
religious priests. Very small boys were often apprenticed to monasteries, especially for music education, and would be invested
with a cassock and sometimes even inducted into the ranks of
clerics.
For centuries before the Reformation, it was required that all
men entering higher education be clerics, and so the cassock and
its variations became familiar academic garb. At the Reformation, many ministers retained a form of the cassock as ordinary dress, rejecting liturgical garments. In the seventeenth century, the English Civil War was in part provoked by the Archbishop of Canterbury's insistence that ministers wear surplices.
Although the Episcopal Church now retains "cassock and surplice" as the normal dress for lay men and women assisting at
liturgy, Catholics are increasingly attentive to the deeply traditional treasure of the alb, our baptismal robe, when special liturgical vesture is needed.

GOD’S WORD TODAY
At every Mass we are nourished at two tables: the table of God's sacred word and the table of the Eucharist. Today's readings provide a
feast for our souls. Wisdom, that mysterious feminine figure, invites all to her table to eat of her food and drink of her wine. This food
helps us to "advance in the way of understanding." As wise followers of the Lord, we listen to Jesus' words: "I am the living bread that
came down from heaven." At the table of the Eucharist we feast on this, the most sacred of all foods. We eat and drink of the very body
and blood of Christ. From both tables--word and Eucharist--we are given life in abundance. Let us hunger for wisdom and for the presence of Christ as the word of God is proclaimed this day.

First Reading -- Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding (Proverbs 9:16).
Psalm -- Taste and see the goodness of the Lord
(Psalm 34).
Second Reading -- Live as wise persons trying to understand what is the will of the Lord, filled with the
Spirit and giving thanks always (Ephesians 5:15-20).
Gospel -- Jesus says, "I am the living bread . . . whoever eats this bread (my flesh) will live forever"
(John 6:51-58).

Welcome to St. Ladislaus Religious Education Program!
Dear Parents,
Our faith in action is shown through the liturgical events and
the practice of the faith like Eucharist and Confession. It is
very important the children with their families become active
and visible in the parish family. Pope Francis talks over and
over about Joy of the Gospel and “to go forth”, were God challenges those who believe in him. The church which “goes
fourth “is a community of missionary disciples who take first
step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. The Church evangelizes through the beauty of liturgy
were we all are invited.
If you have a child in school age and needs to receive some
sacraments, is good time to let the Parish Office know, so we
can put You in right level. Last we have a big group of altar
servers, so we like to see you during Sunday Mass (just a kindly reminder Sunday is a holy day of obligation)

Our Religious Education Program is from 1 through 8 grade.
Class levels usually correspond to a child's grade in school
determined by continued participation in the program. Classes
are held on Saturday morning. The Religious Education Schedule is set up around the public school for the public school
schedule for the holiday weekends.
The religious education program is governed under the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. The religious education program assists the parents in their primary responsibility of evangelizing their children. Transferees from another parish program must have the Baptismal certificate and any class records
from previous program at the time of registration. It is necessary to register your child / children every year. Registration
forms are available in the Parish Office or in the Sacristy .

The Women’s Center
Women who think they are pregnant and are in difficult situations, come to us for help, an ultrasound and counseling. Each year
our counselors help approximately 3,000 women and their families. In our 31 years of service we have enabled over 38,000 mothers to give birth to their babies and provided material and emotional help. Plan to attend our 5k Bike/Hike for Life on Saturday,
September 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We’ll be at two locations: Chicago’s northwest side at Caldwell Woods (Milwaukee

Cicero Ave. location. We would especially love to find a retired man who can lift up to 40 pounds to distribute baby furniture to
clients on Wednesdays (or Thursdays) 10am-2pm. We would love to find ladies willing to assist clients in our Family Resource
Room once or twice a month on Saturdays, 9am-noon or noon-3pm. We would love to find a willing volunteer to cover our Lobby
Front Desk greeting clients Fridays 1-4pm. We also have an excellent opportunity for up to four people at a time to clean and prepare baby bottles for our “spare change campaign”. Please consider hosting a baby shower for mothers and babies. We can especially use new baby clothes 0-3 months, new bibs, baby hygiene products and size 6 disposable diapers. Działalność Kościoła w dziedzinie miłosierdzia należy widzieć na dwóch płaszczyznach: sakramentalno-mistycznej oraz etyczno-ascetycznej. Kościół spełnia swoje
posłannictwo, sprawując sakramenty będące znakami miłosierdzia Bożego
(szczególnie sakrament pokuty i Eucharystię). Kościół nie tylko głosi miłosierdzie i do
niego wzywa, ale daje też świadectwo przez czyny poszczególnych swoich członków.
Jan Paweł II mówi o „wyobraźni miłosierdzia”, potrafiącej ujrzeć potrzebującego brata
(10). Liczny orszak świętych i błogosławionych, którzy swoją działalnością świadczyli
bliźnim miłość miłosierną, jest dla nas nieustanną zachętą do podobnego działania.
Człowiek jest bowiem powołany do tego, aby czynić miłosierdzie na wzór Chrystusa.
Kościół szerzy również kult miłosierdzia Bożego. Modlitwa, będąca wołaniem o miłosierdzie Boże, jest podstawowym prawem i powinnością Kościoła w Jezusie Chrystusie
(DM 15). Kult miłosierdzia Bożego może przejawiać się na wiele sposobów. Jedną
z jego form jest kult związany z obrazem Jezusa Miłosiernego, wizerunkiem objawionym s. Faustynie. Inną formą tego kultu jest Święto Miłosierdzia, wypadające w pierwszą niedzielę po Zmartwychwstaniu Pańskim. W Kościele znana jest również Koronka
do Miłosierdzia Bożego oraz Godzina Miłosierdzia. Jan Paweł II pod koniec swego
pontyfikatu w Sanktuarium Miłosierdzia Bożego w krakowskich Łagiewnikach zawierzył
cały świat Bożemu miłosierdziu. Był to akt o doniosłym znaczeniu, którego wartości
jeszcze w pełni nie odkryto. Jan Paweł II wzywał nas nie tylko do modlitwy i praktyki
życia sakramentalnego. Przypominał nam o konieczności życia miłosierdziem na co
dzień. Chrystus wzywał nas do wzajemnej miłości na Jego wzór, wyznaczając wszystkim jednakową miarę. Bóg okazując nam miłosierdzie, oczekuje, że będziemy świadkami miłosierdzia w dzisiejszym świecie (11). Kościół zachęca do praktyki uczynków
miłosierdzia, do apostolstwa miłosierdzia. Szczególnym szacunkiem otacza on ubogich
i chorych oraz dzieła miłosierdzia i wzajemnej pomocy. Mamy tu do czynienia z apostolstwem indywidualnym i działaniem różnych wspólnot, grup i stowarzyszeń. Ich cel
zawsze jest ten sam: miłość do bliźniego z poszanowaniem jego godności.
Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II był niewątpliwie Papieżem Miłosierdzia. Jest wiele przymiotów i cech przypisywanych naszemu wielkiemu rodakowi, ten zaś często jest na dalszym planie. Rozwój i rozprzestrzenienie się kultu miłosierdzia Bożego dokonały się w
dużej mierze dzięki osobistemu zaangażowaniu Jana Pawła II. Jego nauczanie często
zawierało wiele odniesień do tego Bożego przymiotu. Papież Polak widział miłosierdzie
nie tylko jako przymiot Boga, ale także jego ucieleśnienie w osobie Jezusa Chrystusa
oraz jego realizację w czynach i dziełach Jezusowych, które następnie były podjęte
przez Jego Ciało – Kościół. Miłosierdzie Boże według Jana Pawła II jest dla nas, ludzi
grzesznych, źródłem nadziei. Pomocną rolę odgrywa również Maryja, Matka Miłosierdzia. Głoszenie miłosierdzia jest zadaniem Kościoła. Odbywa się to na wielu płaszczyznach: przez sprawowanie sakramentów (np. pokuty i Eucharystii), głoszenie Dobrej
Nowiny, modlitwę, a przede wszystkim przez czyny miłości wobec bliźnich potrzebujących naszej pomocy. Miłosierdzie powinno przybrać wymiar społeczny przez tworzenie
cywilizacji miłości, która może powstrzymać ekspansję brutalnej cywilizacji śmierci.
Postawa i nauczanie Papieża Jana Pawła II jest dla nas zachętą do podjęcia działania.
