Cultural Week Live Report Day 3
HA MAN!
The whole Prep School enjoyed sessions with the HA!
Man today – wonderfully inspiring, joyful musical sessions!
Children had the space to just enjoy music and have no
fear of making mistakes. There was lots of laughter and
creativity. The day culminated with a mass orchestra and
choir improvisation session. What a privilege to have
hosted this amazing man!
More about Francois le Roux, a.k.a. the HA! Man
Francois enchants and astonishes audiences the world over with his cello, original electronic
accompaniments, keyboard, voice and dances. His music reflects his Southern African roots and
his spontaneous approach challenges conventional ideas in both the serious and commercial
music environment. He has created numerous soundtracks for plays, films and poetry
performances. Each performance becomes a spontaneous creation in itself as all the elements
weave into a whole that moves and bring audiences to their feet from all walks of life.
KITCHEN ENSEMBLE!
During the course of the morning lots of banging, scraping, tapping, shaking and strumming
resonating from the dining-room turned into music! The Grade 1s and 2s, using kitchen utensils,
crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, created some beautiful noise!
CAPOEIRA MARTIAL ARTS!
All the children had a turn to learn some moves during a Capoeira Martial Arts session! Capoeira
is a Brazilian martial art originating in Angola, which combines elements of dance, acrobatics and
music, and is usually referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by West African
slaves at the beginning of the 16th century. It is known for quick and complex moves, using mainly
power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques.

clips on how to say hello and I love you in different
languages. We also went to watch the Grade 2s playing
kitchen instruments.
ALICE TOICH ART WORKSHOP
Alice Toich is a Cape Town based painter who graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art
with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Painting. She has been featured on the infamous ‘Humans of
New York’ and also appeared on SABC’s ‘Afternoon Express’ and the BBC’s “Great South African
Bake Off’ for her fabulous baking skills. The Grade 3s – 7s enjoyed a fabulous art workshop with
Alice (in two different sessions).

try it for themselves too!
PRESTIGE CONCERT!
What a musical treat! Our Past Pupils
performed beautifully and we are so proud
of all their musical achievements. Thanks,
too, to the Music Staff for their part in the
concert - how lucky we are to have such
talent teaching the pupils of Somerset
House.
