Programme 2015
Gala Program 2015
Hosted by Jeppe High School for Girls
Philip H Moore (1916 - 2005) was born in Stockport, England. He
graduated from University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and
spent his adult life building a very successful business in Durban. He
was both an artist and a music lover. His taste in music was wide and
varied but his main musical interest was in the Classics. He was a
philanthropist and donated to many worthy causes. This Competition has been made
possible by the funding generously supplied by his wife, Mrs Norma Moore, and by myself,
his daughter, Mrs Victoria Bennett. It has been established in his memory and in
appreciation for all the love and care he provided and for the musical heritage he gave us.
Mission Statement
To encourage, support and uplift classically trained music students from diverse cultures
and backgrounds up to and including 25 years of age in solo performances.
Vision
To maintain the standard of excellence and to extend this local classical music competition
for solo performers to a competition of national status
“Enough is abundance to the wise” - Euripides

Contestants
Once again we have been overwhelmed with masses of talent, most of whom didn’t make
it to the finals. Today is the “Battle of the Boys” in Category F – from the delicate
harmonies of the guitar to the full-on piano. Last year it was the voices who took the stage
with Palesa Malieloa winning the top prize. Tonight has such a wonderful varied selection
in Category F of voice, guitar, piano and clarinet.
For the other categories – the standard was amazing! You will hear once again, the brilliant
level to which these youngsters aspire.
World Class Competition
The standard of this competition is regarded by many as “world class” and I would love to
take credit for this but personally think it is due to two main features. Firstly, we have top
adjudicators, Doctors, Professors and the like who themselves are highly regarded in the
music industry. This year we had Malcolm Nay, Marian Friedman, Truida van der Walt,
Tinus Botha, Wessel van Wyk and Waldo Weyer adjudicating the preliminary rounds.
Tonight we are blessed to have Arisa Voges whom we welcome to our team, Wessel van
Wyk, Truida van der Walt and Peta-Ann Holdcroft adjudicating and undertaking this very
difficult task.
Secondly, the Contestants themselves choose their programs. There are no set works and
they set the standards. This choice of program has brought a huge variety of pieces that
are played and very seldom do we have repeated repertoires which make it interesting,
varied and contrasting for both adjudicator and audience. This year also sees the piano
being in the minority of instruments.
Sponsorship
Events like this only take place with a huge amount of dedication and sponsorship. Apart
from the funds injected every year, we are also very blessed to have the kind assistance and
sponsorship from Anthony Franklin of Lovemore Music Centre. Lovemore Music sponsored
vouchers to the tune of R300 for each semi finalist on 11th August and today every winner
will receive R1 500 (category F winner will receive R2 000). The runners up will each receive
R1000 in vouchers, so everyone goes home with something. My sincere thanks go to
Lovemore Music Centre and in particular Anthony, Steve, Meg and the staff for their
continued support and encouragement. The cash prizes have, in the main, increased to just
under R60 000. Another sponsor, although not visible by any means, is Pick ‘n Pay Darras
Centre, Kensington who donated funds for food and sponsored the wine tonight. My thanks
to Pick ‘n Pay for their assistance.
We thank Saul Bamberger of Olde ‘n New Antiques and Restorations who has supported
this competition by giving previous winners a slot to perform at his venue in Westcliffe.
Julia Hong (Piano), Abel Selacoe (Cello), Junan Sun (Clarinet) Richard Rheeder (Piano),
Willem de Beer (Piano) and Andrew Munro (Piano) have all played to packed audiences.

saulb@polka. co.za – they really are a treat!
Thanks and appreciation as always
My continued appreciation goes to Norma for the enormous financial support in this
exciting project. The deputy principal of Jeppe High School for Girls, Ms Jane Bernard, is our
mistress of ceremonies. Thank you Ms Bernard for keeping this ship sailing in the right
direction. Another big thanks goes to Ms Dina Gonçalves, the headmistress. She allows us
the use of the school facilities during the competition and gives us free reign while we run
musically amok. We appreciate her support through wind, rain and shine.
Administration
Few folk are really intimately involved in the administration of this competition but each
are critical in the roles that they play. Many thanks are extended to Corné van der
Westhuizen for sitting at the door day in, and day out, keeping us well fed and in general
running that whole section solo. Elise Tait was responsible for setting up the timetable and
sending appointment slips, changing time, running after non-communicative Contestants
and doing her utmost that everyone is well appointed. Elize Kruger is constantly on standby
when time allows and is my “blankie” when needed. She also organised all the adjudicators
and I sincerely thank her for persuading such competent and unbiased music specialists to
adjudicate. Kevin Tait, business manager of the school, has been involved for many years in
the financial administration of this event, making sure I am continually married to the
correct figures and there is no divorce between us.
Finally
Our adjudicators tonight are Arisa Voges, Truida van der Walt (Potchefstroom), Peta-Ann
Holdcroft and Wessel van Wyk (Tuks). We join them in wishing our finalists all the best of
luck and know we are once again in for a treat of an evening.
Now let the music begin!
Yours forever in music and song
Victoria

A word from the headmistress - Miss D N Gonçalves
The school has been associated with the prestigious Philip H. Moore Music Competition for
nine years. We have become accustomed to a competition which has established itself as a
tradition of excellence where classical soloists perform delightful and charming repertoires
of the highest calibre. We are honoured to be a part of the remarkable work which Victoria
Bennett and Norma Moore are doing in encouraging the development of musical talent in
the youth of our country. Our own music students also benefit by participating in the
competition and by being exposed to other outstanding young musicians.
My sincere gratitude to the organisers and best wishes to all the
performers. Victor Hugo once said, “Music expresses that which cannot
be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”: We are so
looking forward to another year of magnificent and captivating
performances.
MC – Ms Jane Bernard

Peta-Ann began her cello studies in Johannesburg under Betty Pack. She performed in
chamber groups all over South Africa at an early age, and won the Unisa Grade-8 prize in
1974. Having earned a Classical Ballet Diploma from the Royal Academy of Dancing, she
then had to choose between ballet or music as a future career. Having chosen music, she
played in the National Youth Orchestra, which performed in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1975,
and was selected to play in the prestigious ‘International Youth Orchestra’ at the Royal
Albert Hall, London under the conductor Claudio Abbado. During this visit to London, she
took part in the Harry Dexter Cello Competition, where she was a finalist. She subsequently
spent a year in New York, studying under Channing Robbins of the Julliard School of Music.

London, as well as Unisa.

Teaching the cello, and chamber music is of special interest to her and she is passionate
about promoting the love of music in our country. She has recently received a rare and
