Activity Haven Summer News 180 Barnardo Avenue Peterborough, ON K9H 5V3 705-876-1670 www.activityhaven.com From the Executive Director’s Desk Summer is just starting . We hope members and the community take advantage of our air conditioning and our summer programs and lunches. Being the manager of the Queen Alexander building for the City of Peterborough, I bring the centre’s concerns to them however, the City of Peterborough makes the final decision. The City is currently working on a solution to the problem in Room 1 and Billiards Room. At this time, I want to thank the board members who have decided to move on, outgoing President Bert Thornber, and long time treasurer Marilyn Kennaley. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated. I would like to welcome all the new board members, Jill Brown, Peter Moore, Geoffrey Arnold, and Doug Colmer and a special thank you to the board members who are remaining on the board, Joanne Anderson, Zella Hall, Shirley Quirk, Bill Charters and Lynne Bullard. Please note any rooms not being used for evening programming will be locked up at 4:00pm for security reasons. Our huge list of fundraising events, keeps growing, please drop into the office and you will see our fundraising lists, our total memberships list, our user fees and our budget. This will help the members understand our reasons for what and how we do what we do here. Without all our volunteers we couldn’t do what we do. In order to promote our Men’s breakfast we are renaming it “The Breakfast Club” which will be open to anyone and everyone and is starting on Tuesday September 20th @ 9:00am. Please see our current newsletter for menus. Just a reminder; to enjoy our fundraising events you don’t have to be members of the club, so bring your friends and family. In order to participate in any of our great programs you must be an Activity Haven member. Page 2 We are always trying to upgrade and restructure to better take advantage of our staffs strengths. Please welcome Jennifer Torpey to Activity Haven. Jennifer will be working in the office , registering members for programs, dinners etc. Heather Leveck will be in charge of Fundraising. Heather will also be working with volunteers and programs. Heather will also be looking for sponsorship for our fundraisers. Valerie Way– Nee is our casual staff, at this time she is off ill. I will be picking up more of the booking and financial. Thank you to all the office volunteers in helping us on a daily basis. I am hoping to have a debit terminal in the office in the next month. Initially designed to build bone density and muscle mass for astronauts, today whole body vibration has become a valuable tool in fitness and weight loss. Regular users see other benefits too whole body vibration is highly efficient-since it’s working your whole body at once; a 10 minute session per day is enough to see benefits. Interestingly, whole body vibration doesn’t feel all that difficult to do. In fact, people mostly compare it to a massage and often giggle their way through a workout! But appearances can be deceiving, and those muscles-particularly the small stabilizing muscles which are typically more difficult to engage in a conventional workout- are working overtime. Member testimonials capture the success that they have experienced using whole body vibration. One member at the T-Zone vibration studio here in Peterborough, had this to say; “I have been a member since the day they opened. To date have lost 29 inches over my entire body. I feel great with more energy and less muscle aches and stiffness. I can really feel if I have missed a day and cannot wait to get to T-Zone the next day. You may not feel like it is making a difference but wait till you get your measurements done after 2 weeks and you will be amazed at the difference it has made! Fellow T-Zone member Leslie Baird pointed out; “it helps so much with my sleep, circulation, arthritis and keeps my weight at an even keel. I feel fully energizes when I leave. If you miss a day or two, you van feel the difference.” Whole body vibration works be creating an unstable surface for users to stand and exercise on. Have you ever tried walking on a soft surface like sand or even the kids’ bouncy castles, and noticed it’s much harder to walk? Now imagine that surface was moving up and down, up to sixteen times a second! Your muscles would be working that much harder to keep you stabilized- without you even having to try to engage them.
