Pikwakanagan Tibadjumowin Friday, August 14, 2015 The Zibi Project & Pikwàkanagàn Come and learn more about this unique development project in Ottawa-Gatineau. Representatives of the Memengweshii Council and Windmill Development Group will be on hand Saturday and Sunday during the Powwow to tell you more about Zibi, a unique community in the heart of the National Capital Region. Zibi represents a new partnership with the Algonquin-Anishinabe Nation. Chief and Council of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation have signed a Letter of Intent with Windmill, and will be working closely with the community to make connections to Zibi every step of the way. This is your chance to ask questions and to learn about ways you can be involved. Stop by our booth and say Kwe! A new model of reconciliation -· Zibi will be the most environmentally and socially sustainable community in the world. · Windmill Development Group will be developing this 37-acre property, which is located in the heart of the Algonquin-Anishinabe territory, along the riverbanks in downtown Gatineau and on parts of Chaudière and Albert Islands in Ottawa. · Windmill is committed to the meaningful engagement and long-term prosperity of Algonquin Anishinabe People. Through arts, culture, jobs, training, youth mentorships, and the formal recognition that the site is on unceded Algonquin territory, Zibi will be a meaningful and authentic manifestation of the Algonquin Nation in the heart of Canada's Capital. · Currently, the property is in a highly deteriorated state: contaminated, fenced-in, paved over and abandoned it Pikwakanagan Tibadjumowin Friday, August 14, 2015 September 1, 2015 Pikwakanagan in Search of Foster Parents Dear Parents/Guardians: We are currently in search of approved Aboriginal foster parents, or individuals who are willing to take the training to become a foster parent. This September brings some further changes to our Native language program. In hopes of making this option available to more students, a component of Native language will be taught this year through Native arts. The program, called Algonquin Language, Culture and Arts, is open to both Native and non-Native students in Grades 7 & 8 who want to learn a Native language and develop a better understanding of the culture of which that language forms part. In the Native arts class, visual arts, dance, and music will be instructed through the Algonquin language with a focus on the use of language in the classroom in relevant contexts and for relevant purposes. This program will be taught by Michele Gaudry and will take place at the same time as the regular Arts class is scheduled. If you would like to sign your son/daughter up for Algonquin Language, Culture and Arts, please complete the form below and return it to the school no later than Tuesday, September 8, 2015, after which no late forms will be accepted. Please note that there are a limited number of spaces available in this program. Also, the expectation is that if your child signs up for this program, they will continue for the full school year. Those students already enrolled in Native language will automatically be enrolled in this class so there is no need for you to complete the form below. Foster parents work together with Pikwakanagan Child & Family Services/ Family & Children’s Services of Renfrew County staff to develop a plan for each child in care. The ideal plan is usually to reunite a young person with his or her family. When a reunion is not possible, the plan may require long-term foster care. Foster families play an essential role in the child's daily life. The stable and caring home environment that foster families provide helps encourage healthy growth and development. If you are interested in this ever rewarding opportunity and would like more information please contact: Hilda Tennisco, Supervisor Pikwakanagan Child & Family Services 613-625-2173 Child & Youth Mental Health and Addiction Services Child & Youth Mental Health and Addiction Services will not be holding any groups in the Month of August. Most of you know Ritchie Sarazin who has always lived in our community, and who served on Council for a number of years. Our other selection is Sarah Yankoo, a new member of our community, who is a descendant of respected Elder Sarah Lavalley. We are happy that our long term dream of having staff to record our community’s history has finally been made possible; this project is funded entirely by a grant from the New Relationship Fund of Ontario’s Aboriginal Affairs that was submitted by the Algonquins of Ontario on behalf of all of us. Please join us in welcoming Ritchie and Sarah, and helping them to make history. The Algonquin Cultural Heritage Project Assistants will schedule and conduct interviews with Algonquin Elders and members within their community to collect evidence of local and territorial history. This will include documenting family stories, local legends, and personal experience accounts relative to cultural heritage subjects. These recollections and storytelling are invaluable resources to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and cultural heritage, and to reconnect current and future generations of Algonquins to their heritage. If you would like to be interviewed, please contact: Ritchie at 613-625-2245 or [email protected] Request for Art A Speaker of the Legislative Assembly with Métis ancestry of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario would like to bring forward and celebrate the experiences of the province’s varied peoples and enhance the rich traditions and heritage already present at the Legislature with the voices of those who have not traditionally been heard. They are launching a project to designate two adjoining committee rooms in the Legislative Building as a space to honour Ontario’s Aboriginal peoples. They hope is to fill these rooms with artwork and cultural expressions from Aboriginal communities. They are looking for one or two pieces of art to be loaned to the Legislative Assembly for this project. “Halo” Women’s Slo-Pitch Team finished in second place at the 2015 National Slo-Pitch Championships in St. Johns Newfoundland Aug1-4 bring home silver Medals. They are interested in two-dimensional work such as paintings, photography or prints as well as other cultural expressions – for example dream catchers, sculptures, or culturally significant clothing. We would like to thank everyone who supported us on our quest for Silver without you, we would not have accomplished what we did. Thank You! If you would like to assist with this request and have your art loaned to the Legislative Assembly please contact Alanna Hein, Executive Assistant at the Council Chambers, 613-625-2800.
