Introduction
Basic and translational research on stem cells for regenerating injured organs, including the heart and the brain, has
experienced tremendous progress over the past decade.
Besides cell types traditionally used in regenerative protocols, such as bone marrow-derived cells and mesenchymal
stem cells, new candidate cell types for cardiac repair have
emerged, most notably cardiac-resident stem and progenitor cells. Meanwhile, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells
provide a unique opportunity of disease modelling and
personalized medicine. The roles of molecular mediators
of stem cell effects, such as paracrine factors including
exosomes and noncoding RNA, are increasingly well understood and exploited in therapeutic strategies.
The fifth edition of the Lugano Stem Cell Meeting provides
a unique opportunity to discuss the above scientific issues
with worldwide leaders in the field within a particularly
comfortable context. As for the previous editions of the
Meeting, the first day will be focused on basic research
while the second day will be more specifically devoted to
clinical applications and cell therapy trials. Spotlight sessions of this edition will highlight exosomes as paracrine
mediators of functional effects of stem cells, noncoding RNA as critical regulators of cell function, and stem
cell-based approaches for the treatment of neurological
diseases.
We look forward to welcoming you in Lugano,
