PARISHIONER REGISTRATION
MISSION STATEMENT OF THE
ST. MICHAEL FAITH COMMUNITY
If you would like to join the parish, please contact the
Rectory/Church office. Please remember to notify us if you
move or will be moving out of the parish. Registration, the
practice of stewardship, and regular participation in the
Sacraments indicate that a person is an active member of the
parish and is eligible to act as a godparent or sponsor. As a
Church community seeking to be faith-filled disciples and
good stewards, the sacrifice of our time, talent and treasure is
essential for the common good.
Extending a rich parish heritage built upon the pioneering
traditions of the first settlers of the Southern Allegheny
mountains, St. Michael the Archangel Parish embraces as its
mission the use of all available resources, both spiritual
and temporal, to minister to the needs of the people of
Hollidaysburg and its surrounding areas. We do this in a
fashion which reflects the teachings and example of Jesus
Christ, while promoting a tradition of liturgical excellence,
strong support for Catholic education in all its varieties, and
enlightened social outreach to the community at large, in union
with both the Diocesan and Universal Church.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic
Church should contact the rectory office. New classes begin
in the Fall.
Liturgical Reflection
]
Disciples of the Lord need to know what is truly important in their faith life. Distractions, possessions,
and attachments must be left behind. Following Jesus demands a total commitment and an
understanding that the Lord is the first priority in life and relationships. Such a life presumes the virtue
of mercy. Filled with compassion and charity, believers witness to the faith with a love that reflects the
face of God. The baptized need the wisdom to choose that which is of God and reject that which is not
of God. In mercy we support one another in the serious call to follow Christ in our daily lives.

INTRODUCTION FOR TODAY’S READINGS
Twenty–Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wisdom 9: 13-18 The book of Wisdom was written by a
teacher who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, a center for Greek
philosophy in the ancient world. Fearful that the Jewish people
might be captivated by this secular wisdom, the author contrasts it with the rich wisdom of God found in Jewish religious
traditions. The ninth chapter presents a prayer of Solomon for
wisdom and today’s reading is an excerpt of this prayer.
Philemon 1: 9-10, 12-17 Philemon was a rich man with many
servants, one of whom – Onesimus – escaped. He reached
Paul in prison and converted to Christianity. In sending Onesimus back to Philemon, Paul gave him a letter to take with
him, a portion of which we hear today.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Christian Stewards view their possessions as gifts that are
meant to build God’s kingdom here on earth.
FAMILIES AND THE GOSPEL
Luke 14:25-33 Today’s gospel is clear: commitment to another
involves sacrifice. Before we accept a commitment such as
marriage or parenting, we must plan carefully like the king in
today’s gospel. These are serious commitments which demand
complete selfgiving and are not for the faint hearted or selfish.
CROP WALK
The 2016 CROP WALK is on Sunday,
September 25 at 1:20 pm. The 5k/3mi
course steps-off from the parking lot
between the Jr. High School & the YMCA &
takes about 90 minutes. Please join our St.
Michael's team TODAY by signing up downstairs in the
church hall (basement of the church) after Mass. We're hoping
to have at least 50 walkers who can raise a minimum of just $10
each. Can't walk? Sponsor someone who can or make a
donation and help us "End Hunger One Step at a Time"! For
