OUR HOUSE, INC. 17TH ANNUAL 4 MILE RUN/2 MILE WALK
BENEFITS ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
On Saturday, May 21st over 300 runners and walkers joined together at
the Village Green in Summit, New Jersey for the 17th Annual Our House
4 Mile Race and 2 Mile Walk. This USATF sanctioned event drew sports
enthusiasts and casual runners and walkers alike thanks to its unique
mileage and fun, friendly atmosphere where participants raise money to
support adults with developmental disabilities. All proceeds from the event
go directly to the Our House Foundation which funds programs and
services provided by Our House, Inc. Thanks to community support,
donations and sponsors, including Associate Sponsors CR Bard
Foundation and Investors Bank, Our House hoped to reach its goal of
raising $150,000 at the event.
Master of Ceremonies, John Elliott of CBS News, was on hand to emcee
the event. ""I always feel inspired when I help out Our House! I feel a
special connection with many of the residents and participants, since it
reminds me of my late brother in law, who, in spite of a disability, lived a
rich life, full of laughter and love. At each Our House event, I hear the
same kind of laughter and feel the love from the amazing people that
participate," said Mr, Elliott. "I also know how important it is that people
with special needs receive excellent care and ongoing social, educational
and employment opportunities. The committed Our House staff and
volunteers work hard to ensure that all individuals can live life to their full
potential by providing them with ongoing support and chances to learn
and grow"
In addition to the USATF certified races, the 13th Annual ‘Everyone’s
A Winner Race’ was held. This is a free event for the special needs
community. This feel good race is a highlight of the day with medals
presented to all of the participants by Mr. Elliott.
The 4 mile and 2 mile race courses traveled through the beautiful rolling
hills and flat terrain of gorgeous residential and downtown Summit, New
Jersey. In addition to race activities, arts and crafts, face painting,
complimentary food and a DJ were hand to add to the festivities. All
participants received a race bag that included a sleeveless tech tee and other
goodies.
The mission of Our House Inc. is (1) to provide healthy and stimulating
environments for people with developmental and other disabilities, through
the provision of community residences, employment opportunities, social
programs and other supports designed to help them achieve their full
potential for living meaningful and productive lives; and (2) to provide
affordable housing for low income individuals, consistent with IRS
guidelines for low income housing programs, as a means of relieving the
poor and distressed. Our House Inc. offers programs to individuals across
New Jersey in towns including: Basking Ridge, Berkeley Heights, Bound
Brook, Bridgewater, Maplewood, Millington, New Providence, Newark,
Summit, Union, Verona, West Orange and Westfield. They are slated to
open their newest residence in Livingston in summer 2016.

11 CRITICAL HOME
INSPECTION TRAPS TO BE
AWARE OF WEEKS BEFORE
LISTING YOUR HOME FOR SALE
Summit NJ - According to industry experts, there
are over 33 physical problems that will come under
scrutiny during a home inspection when your home
is for sale. A new report has been prepared which
identifies the eleven most common of these
problems, and what you should know about them
before you list your home for sale.
Whether you own an old home or a brand new
one, there are a number of things that can fall short
of requirements during a home inspection. If not
identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items
could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why
it's critical that you read this report before you list
your home. If you wait until the building inspector
flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly
experience costly delays in the close of your home
sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away
altogether. In most cases, you can make a
reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know
what you're looking for, and knowing what you're
looking for can help you prevent little problems
from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.
To help homesellers deal with this issue before
their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11
Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home
Inspection" has been compiled which explains the
issues involved.
To order a FREE Special Report, visit
www.njhomeinspectiontraps.com or to hear a brief
recorded message about how to order your FREE
copy of this report call toll-free 1-888-243-5861 and
enter 3006. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.

to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale
of your home.

TATLOCK TENNIS COURT PROJECT COMPLETION
The City of Summit is announcing that the
Tatlock Tennis Court Replacement Project has
reached completion. Four new courts with stateof- the-art post-tension concrete technology is
now ready for play. Recently, each court was
color coated and lined to meet United States
Tennis Association and USTA Youth Tennis
program teaching standards. LED lighting, new
fencing, seating, and shade structures are also
new additions to the courts.
Evening play is permitted until 10:30 p.m.
only; lighting structures will not work past this
time. Residents are encouraged to stay off courts
until all signs have been removed, indicating that
courts are ready for play. “Through the support
of the city, county and Summit Tennis
Association, we have created a fabulous new
tennis complex for the Summit community,”
explains Director of Community Programs Judith
Josephs. “I look forward to our beautiful new
courts being put to good use very soon.”
The Tatlock Tennis Court Replacement Project
is funded through the City’s Capital Improvement
Fund, the Union County Kids Recreation Trust
Fund, and by a generous donation from the
Summit Tennis Association. Leading the project
along with city engineers is project designer,
Thomas Miller of Premiere Product Design.
Miller has developed extensive experience in the
design of athletic complexes through the years.
The contractor for the project is Classic Turf of
Connecticut. Plans for the official opening
ceremony will be announced in early June.
Reservations for court play are suggested but not
required; those with reservations will have
priority on the courts. To make a reservation,

IRS SCAM - PROTECT YOURSELF
The Summit Police Department issued an
advisory on their FaceBook page on May 27,
2016: “Advisory: IRS scam going wild. Dispatch
received 100 calls about the scam today. Do not
fall for it. The IRS does not call and will never
direct you to make a payment or confirm your
Social Security number over the phone.”
In March the IRS issued a Consumer Alert.
According to the IRS website aggressive and
threatening phone calls by criminals
impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat
to taxpayers, but now the IRS is receiving new
reports of scammers calling under the guise of
verifying tax return information over the phone.
Protect Yourself
Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to
be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay
a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending
cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire
transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback
requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via
aphishing email. They’ve even begun politely
asking taxpayers to verify their identity over the
phone.
Many phone scams use threats to intimidate
and bully a victim into paying. They may even
threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of
their victim if they don’t get the money.
Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to
make it look like the IRS or another agency is
calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge
numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the
victim’s name, address and other personal
information to make the call sound official.
Here are some things the scammers often do
but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five
things is a tell-tale sign of a scam.
The IRS will never:
Call to demand immediate payment over the
phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed
without first having mailed you several bills.
Call or email you to verify your identity by
asking for personal and financial information.
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you
the opportunity to question or appeal the amount
they say you owe.
Require you to use a specific payment method
for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the
phone or e-mail.
Threaten to immediately bring in local police
or other law-enforcement groups to have you
arrested for not paying.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming
to be from the IRS and asking for money or to
verify your identity, here’s what you should do:
If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to
think that you do:
Do not give out any information. Hang up
immediately.
Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their
“IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page.
You can also call 800-366-4484.
Report it to the Federal Trade Commission.
Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov.
Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.
If you know you owe, or think you may owe
tax: Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers
can help you.
Stay alert to scams that use the IRS as a lure.
Tax scams can happen any time of year, not just
at tax time. For more, visit “Tax Scams and
Consumer Alerts” on IRS.gov.

REEVES-REED ARBORETUM DEDICATES MARY
REINHART STACKHOUSE EDUCATION CENTER
The extraordinary work of the Reeves-Reed
Arboretum education staff has been lauded and
emulated for many years. Director of Children’s
Education, Jackie Kondel, and Environmental
Educator, Lisa Martin, continually strive to create
exciting, nature-rich programming that is not
only innovative, but directly tied to the core
curriculum standards set forth each year by the
Board of Education. It is no wonder that more
than 10,000 children benefited from their efforts
and talents in 2015.
On Friday evening May 20th, the Board of
Trustees, the Staff, and the Executive Director of
Reeves-Reed Arboretum named the Arboretum’s
education building, the Mary Reinhart
Stackhouse Education Center, in appreciation and
recognition of the legacy of Mary Stackhouse.
The late Mrs. Stackhouse was a great fan and
generous supporter of the Arboretum. An avid
golfer and naturalist, Mrs. Stackhouse established
her Foundation to specifically support
environmental causes, including the preservation
and growth of natural open space. Thanks to the
Stackhouse Foundation, Reeves-Reed Arboretum
has been able to grow the Arboretum’s staffing
capacity with the addition of a second
environmental educator and three paid
horticultural internships.
The Foundation’s trustees, Robert McCurdy,
Mary Parker, and Anne Hennessy, were on hand
for the ceremony as were the staff and trustees of
RRA, and Summit Council Member, David
Naidu. Mary McCurdy, wife of Stackhouse
trustee Robert McCurdy, spoke of her long
friendship with Mary Stackhouse and how happy
and proud she would have been with the work
being done by the Arboretum’s staff in support of
the Stackhouse vision.
Councilman Naidu spoke lovingly about his
many visits to the Arboretum, “sometimes alone
but never feeling lonely here.” At the moment
Director Juliano dedicated the building, a
beautiful new hand-crafted fused glass sign,
created by artist Barbara Galazzo, blazed the
name Mary Reinhart Stackhouse Education
Center in a profusion of color and whimsy. A
champagne reception immediately followed the
dedication ceremony.

SUMMIT SPRING STREET FESTIVAL
By: Edir Coronado
Vendors from as far as Sparta, NJ came to the
six-square mile town of Summit to place their
products on display, on an unseasonably cold
spring day, during this year’s Summit Spring
Street Festival held on Sunday, May 15th.
The purveyors did not disappoint, impressing
newcomers Aaron Hickman and Amy Lewis, two
former Virginians, “Being able to walk out your
door to something like a street fair is one of the
cool things about Jersey,” said Hickman.
While it is true that most patrons and
merchants did not realize how cold it would be,
families still gathered to enjoy the unique variety
of products on display.
Goods like, rustic farmhouse décor, from Villa
Stash. Nastassia Vilardo, the owner of the Villa
Stash in Sparta, NJ, wanted to get her business,
now in its infancy, some recognition. She felt that
Summit, “is a great location.” When asked about
the weather she responded, “we have been getting
a lot of traffic despite the weather, but it could be
warmer.”
Maria Andrianova and her family had their
own display, handmade crotched items from
Mary Magic Store, a homebased business in
Summit, and while the weather in her words was
“terrible,” Andrianova and her family still
enjoyed themselves. She wasn’t the only
homebased business at the fair this year, making
their debut were sisters Katia and Fabiola
Negron, proud owners of Peruvian Crafts. The
sisters created a multitude of charms, all of which
are handmade.
Distinctive art had a presence at the fair,
courtesy of Victoria Ramirez, through her
business Motifs by Victoria. She exhibited
jewelry, which Ramirez handcrafts herself. The
process she uses is enameling, Ramirez
incorporates fused powdered glass onto copper
metal to create pieces that are each unique.
Although the Spring Festival resembled more
of a Fall fair, the community members and sellers
enjoyed the innovative atmosphere.

WORLD'S LARGEST SWIM LESSON
On Friday, June 24, 2016, tens of thousands of
children and adults at aquatic facilities around the
world will participate in The World’s Largest
Swim Lesson™. As an official host location, the
Summit Family Aquatic Center will welcome all
to participate in this global event.
Since its inception, more than 155,000 children
and adults have participated in the WLSL™ with
the 2015 event alone hosting over 38,000
participants from 22 countries.
Research shows participation in formal
swimming lessons can reduce the risk of
drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4,
yet many do not receive formal swimming or
water safety training. Drowning remains the
leading cause of unintended, injury-related death
for child ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause
of accidental death for children under the age of
14.
The 2016 WLSL™ event at the SFAC will
kick off at 10 a.m., welcoming both members and
non-members to participate. No pre-registration
required. Participants will be asked to sign in on
the day of the event. The SFAC is located at 100
Ashwood Avenue. Free event parking will be
available on-site.
Join the movement to help spread awareness
on the importance of learning to swim at the
WLSL™ 2016 event.
For more on the SFAC’s WLSL™ event, visit
summitcommunityprograms.com.
Parents are encouraged to visit wlsl.org for
additional information and resources on
drowning prevention.
