You’re my cuppycake, gumdrop, your my snoogums-boogums, you’re the apple of my eye.” Autum Greeson, Editor in Chief It’s that time of year: seniors who are going to college have received their admissions letters, sent in their acceptance notices to attend the college of their choosing, and are now trying to figure out how to exactly pay for everything. The fact is that many students need financial aid when it comes to college. In the most recent study done, 47% of students in two-year colleges received financial aid and four-year, private colleges doubled that with 83% of students receiving financial aid. With this many students needing money to pay for college, it is vital for every student to be aware of the financial options, so each student can receive the most financial aid possible. The first option is to obtain scholarships. A scholarship is a sum of money donated to a student to help pay for his or her education or training and any associated costs. They are based on financial need, academic merit, athletic ability, or a wide variety of other criteria set by the organizations that provide the scholarships. Scholarship awards can range from small amounts up to the full cost of schooling. Most scholarships are less than $500, for only one year of school. The second best option is grants. A grant is money that is given to students or the institution they are attending to pay for the student’s education or training and any associated expenses. Grants are considered gifts and are not to be paid back. Federal grants are almost exclusively for undergraduate students. Grants are usually given on the basis of financial need. Students with the most need as shown on their FAFSA forms get the most in grants. Grants are renewable every year. The next best option should, of course, be a last resort for financial aid: student loans. A student loan is money that is lent to a student to pay for the student’s education or training and any associated expenses, but the money must be paid back over a period of time. Many institutions provide low-interest loans to students and their parents or guardians. The amount of money a student can receive in loans varies by the distributing institution and depends on whether the student is claimed by a parent or guardian as a dependent. Since the process of applying for a loan may take several months, it is a good idea to start applying for Federal student loans well in advance. All loans are considered “applied for” when the FAFSA is completed. In addition, there are many sites that help students search for financial aid. Some sites include, but are not limited to: finaid.org, fastweb.com, and scholarships.com. School guidance counselors are also usually available to help any student search for financial aid. For further information on financial aid, students can see any of the Limestone guidance counselors. The most important aspect of financial aid for college is to complete the FAFSA form and get it submitted as soon as possible. Do not consider any option as too much work--apply for EVERYTHING. College is open and available to everyone, if they are willing to find a way to pay for it. There really is no excuse--go out there and find the way! This is a well-know song sung by Strawberry Shortcake for Valentine’s Day. With Valentine’s day approaching on February 14, many people start to question the meaning behind it. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and the United States. The legend goes that Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno, the goddess of women and marriage. During this time the Emperor, Claudius II, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military due to the men not wanting to leave their loves or families behind. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome is the days of Claudius II and aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married the couples. For this kind deed, St. Valentine was beaten to death with clubs and had his head cut off because he disobeyed the emperor. He suffered martyrdom on February 14th, around the year 270. Now people celebrate this day, in honor of what he did. There are many traditions that take place on Valentine’s Day as well. In Wales, wooden s p o o n s are carved and given as gifts. Hearts, keys and keyholes are favorite decorations on the spoon. Some people believe that if a woman sees a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it means she would marry a sailor. If she sees a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she sees a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire. In Rome, all of the girls would put their name in a bucket and all of the bachelors in town would draw names out. Whoever they drew would then be coupled, or their Valentine, for the year. Now, traditionally, people receive a dozen roses, chocolate, and conversational hearts as loving gifts. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-selling holiday of the year. Approximately 85 percent of all Valentine’s Day cards are purchased by women. With all of this commotion on February 14th, who wouldn’t want to celebrate it? Oscar Hammerstein II once said in The Sound of Music, “A bell is no bell until you ring it, a song is no song until you sing it, and love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay− Love isn’t love until you give it away.” Happy Valentine’s Day! 2 NEWS News Shorts NASA Launch In December of 2010 a private company in Cape Canaveral, Florida launched a spacecraft for NASA named The Falcon 9 rocket. The purpose for launching the Falcon 9 was to try and accomplish the first commercial space station supply run. Also it could eventually lead to astronaut transportation. The goal of the Falcon 9 itself was to carry a capsule named Dragon into orbit. After Dragon was in orbit it was to circle around the world twice, and then land off the coast of Mexico. Susan G. Komen Lawsuit The Susan G. Komen Foundation has filed a lawsuit to protect their trademark phase the “race for the cure.” They have also let other nonprofit charities to refrain from using the phrase “for the cure.” They also warned other organization about the use of the color pink. Jonathan Blum, Komen’s general counsel, states that, “The Foundation protects its trademarks as a matter of financial stewardship and that the group wants to avoid confusion. A mixup could mean a sizable donation, landing on another charity’s books.” Michelle Obama Bill The First Lady, Michelle Obama, has come up with a bill about food because for years now our nation has been struggling with child obesity. One in three children is either overweight or obese. The Child Nutrition Bill is a step towards having healthier children in America. This bill will make it easier for the tens of millions of children participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program to eat healthier at school. The schools that participate in the students eating healthier will have to serve more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, to reduce the amount of fat and salt in the student’s diets. This step toward eating healthier is supported by parents, health-experts, and many food and beverage industries. As if tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards in season weren’t enough to keep us on our toes, Mother Nature occasionally surprises us with some truly odd weather phenomena: From whirlwinds of fire to bloody rains, it’s a strange world of weather out there. Strange Weather Events Shake Up World Throughout the World, Odd Weather Strikes All As Odd By Samantha Ruzicka Reporter Tornadoes in January, record breaking blizzards, severe flooding, and massive mudslides. All of these things have been breaking out all over the world. These natural disasters gone crazy have been causing not only school, business, and road closings, but also casualties and severe damage to people’s property. In August of 2010, a mudslide tore through Zhouqu, China as a result of rain and erosion. Over 700 people were reported as deceased by the soldiers who combed through what was left from the massive mudslide. Along with the thousands of rescuers, there were hundreds of doctors who came to assist the cause as well. The residents and the people who came to help tried to remain hopeful as they continued to examine the damage, but their hopes were constantly falling as they discovered more casualties and assessed more damaged properties. There was a very large need for medical assistance among the people, but unfortunately the mudslide had made it difficult to find any solid ground to set up medical tents. Just recently, the Midwest has been experiencing some extremely odd weather for December and January. In the middle of winter, after shoveling the 19 inches of snow we had in December, people were surprised to hear tornado sirens going off and warnings flashing on their TV. There was such a temperature difference, from freezing to warm, that the air became dangerous. For most, the tornadoes did not affect them or their homes, but for some, not only were their homes destroyed, but a few even lost their lives. Seven citizens were recorded as tornado victims. Four of them lived in Missouri and three in Arkansas. One of Drinking and Driving Still A Problem Shelby Greeson, Reporter It’s something we all know, but nearly every person in the world is affected by: Drunk Driving is against the law. If a driver is caught with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) higher than the legal limit permitted by that state, he will be arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). There are many organizations against drunk driving like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), and Project Roadblock. It’s a global problem, one that simply won’t go away. In Illinois there were 13,846 alcohol related deaths, in 2008. That was 37 percent of the total deaths that year. The following year, there was an estimate of 11,773 deaths due to alcohol. Just in 2010, Illinois had 1,249 deaths related to alcohol. Out of the 1,249 deaths 742 of them were people who were killed by drunk drivers. Even though they did not have the seven people who were killed made it to the hospital, but passed away soon after he arrived there. As devastating as a death by natural disaster is, it is even more unbelievable and upsetting when the disaster was never expected to happen. Many, if not all people, in the Midwest were unprepared when they found out about the tornado warnings. Thousands of people were stranded this winter in California when a massive snowstorm broke out. Major highways were shut down which prevented many from being where they needed to be. Specifically, a highway that runs through mountains just north of Los Angeles was shut down resulting in people either having to take a much longer route to get to their destination, or forcing them to wait until the road could be cleared. Last year, 2010, ended on an unusual note any alcohol in their system, they still died because of people who were drinking. Seventy- three people died with a BAC of .01 to .07. Another 434 people died with their BAC above the legal limit in Illinois, which is .08. Rachel Elliot was only eighteen when she died in 2008. The drunk driver that caused Elliot’s death was Elva Diaz, 31 years of age. On February 21, 2008, Diaz’s Blood Alcohol Level was .02. She killed an innocent teenager that had not yet had a chance to live her life. Before Elliot died, she graduated from Orland High School in 2007, and was attending University of California, Irvine. Elliot wanted to be a forensic investigator. She never got the chance to live her dream. One organization that can relate to all teenage students is, Students Against Drunk Driving. This organization thinks role modeling, positive peer pressure, and good environmental strategies could be good ways to prevent drinking and driving. SADD is a “peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence, and teen suicide.” They focus on trying to help teenagers make better decisions, and to prevent the dangers that could lead to someone’s life being at risk. The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving. MADD is not opposed to the individuals themselves, but the actions they when it came to weather. Even though 2010 is now over and everyone is moving on to a new year in 2011, the weather still continues to be throwing people off with sudden changes. Very recently, an outof-place blizzard hit Georgia causing schools to be closed for a week. Since Georgia is so far south, there had never been an obvious need for snow plows. Not only that, but the people who have lived in or around Georgia have never really had practice with driving in the conditions that come with snow. The lack of snow plows and driving experience ended up creating a very dangerous situation. Letting people drive on the roads and also letting kids go to school, whether on a bus or in a car, like normal could very possibly end with an exponential rise in car accidents or death. These unnatural weather conditions are affecting everyone in numerous spot across the globe. Preparing for these disasters is becoming more and more of a necessity and citizens are starting to be more cautious. make about drunk driving. To date, MADD has saved over 300,000 lives and will continue to save more. One of the more public anti-drunk driving programs is Project Roadblock. Project Roadblock’s ad is, “Buzzed driving is drunk driving.” According to this ad campaign, consuming any alcohol before driving should be considered illegal in the United States. This organization sponsors an ad campaign that runs on television from December 24th to December 31st, as an attempt to raise awareness to everyone about how dangerous it is to drive while intoxicated. Project Roadblock picked this particular week because of the holidays and the celebration of a new year. In the week that the annual campaign is shown, the hopes are people who see the campaign will stop a family member or a friend from driving under the influence and possibly causing a serious car crash in a season in which many people celebrate with alcohol. Just with one drink drivers can be in a drunken driving accident and will never be able to live out their dream. Even though people just think they are buzzed they are still drunk. If someone has even had one alcoholic beverage, they should still have a designated driver, or use a Taxi Service. Despite all evidence that shows us the dangers and tragedy of drunk driving, people still make poor choices and do it anyway. Job Outlook Top 8 jobs in the upcoming market, their growth rate, and average salary the most in terms of pay packages and advancement opportunities. What are the Best Jobs for the Future? Jami Gray, Section Editor What are the best jobs for the future? This is a question which every student seems to worry about. Many of our seniors are looking toward their future now, and need to know what jobs are hot. Having an idea of the best jobs for tomorrow can help them take the right decision to achieve great heights in their career. FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR With the world coming out of a huge economic recession, jobs in the financial services sector, which were important before the recession, are all set to be in demand once again. Students who have completed business, accounting, or financial planning can join the leading financial services provider companies for a decent pay package. Money is always going to be an issue, whether we have enough or not, so this is a good field to look at. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTOR Jobs in the information technology sector (computers) have been among the top jobs for WikiLeaks Becomes Global Problem The Leak, However, Has Been Patched Chayse Cairn, Reporter Wiki Leaks is an international, nonprofit organization that publishes secret, classified information through its website, which was founded in 2006. The organization is run by The Sun Shine Press, which had claimed a data base of over 1.2 million documents within its first year. Wiki Leaks posted its first document in December 2006, a decision to assassinate government officials signed by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, a Somali political figure who was the head of the 90-member shura council of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) of Somalia. Over the last four years now, Wiki Leaks has been responsible for leaking secret government information, both foreign and domestic. The mastermind behind Wiki Leaks Julian Assange, who is referred to as the director of the company, is wanted in Sweden for alleged sexual assault, and was arrested in London, England on December 7, 2010. Julian is now currently under bail and house arrest in England, pending on an extradition hearing. Assange has denied all charges and claimed that they are all politically motivated. Wiki Leaks is funded through public investors and private donations. The site can be donated to through banks and, also, the companies account with Pay pal, an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the NEWS 3 the future for the last two decades. The jobs of software developers, programmers and technical writers would prove to be highly paid in the future. PSYCHIATRIST With the fast-growing population and increasing tensions in life and work related stress, the job of a psychiatrist would be one of the best jobs for the future. Psychiatrists who have completed their education and have some practical experience can apply for jobs in large hospitals, or in groups. After a few years of service, Internet. Wiki Leaks account with Pay pal had been suspended on 22 January 2010, but was reinstated on 25 January 2010. Wiki Leaks said that this had happened before, and was done for “no obvious reason.” The company receives its documents from anyone who holds the information. Wiki Leaks claims that its only intention is to bring the truth about oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, SubSaharan Africa and the Middle East, and also to shine light on unethical governments and businesses. these doctors can consider the idea of starting their own consulting clinic. TEACHER Teaching jobs would definitely be one of the top jobs for the future. With increasing awareness of education and the establishment of more and more government involvement, teachers teaching math, reading, writing, and science subjects will always be in hot demand. Salaries for teachers have also seen a growing trend over the past few years. High school and university level teachers will benefit Aflockalypse Now Mysterious Bird Deaths Puzzle the World Jamie Gray, Reporter In the United States, billions of birds die each year from run-ins with cars, cats, and windows. What is unusual is that on New Year’s Eve, 5,000 dead redwinged blackbirds dropped from the sky in Beebe, A r k a n s a s . Witnesses to the incident were left unsettled and ornithologists were puzzled as to what could be the cause. Three days later, another 500 birds were found dead in Louisiana. Other places where multiple deaths of birds have taken place include: Texas, Kentucky, and Sweden. As soon as media heard about all the dead birds, many different theories have come out as to what has caused the outbreak of deaths. The initial theory that people had about all the sudden bird deaths in Beebe was due to the weather. Other ideas that have been thrown out are poisons, avian flu (bird flu), or toxins. Some of the more outrageous conspiracies include aliens, disruptions in Earth’s magnetic field, and radiation bursts in secret government weapons. Although the mass bird mortalities are strange, there have been at least 16 other recordings, of such incidents, by the U.S. Geological Survey over the past thirty years. These previous NURSE There are many job market experts who have said that jobs in the nursing field would be the best jobs for the future. With increase in the number of hospitals and an ever growing population suffering from diseases and disorders, the need for well trained and hard working nurses will always be there. Doctors are becoming so busy that nurses are doing much of the work in clinics and hospitals, so there is a huge demand for qualified nurses, and there are many areas in which to specialize. BEAUTY Everyone needs a haircut, right? If you are trained as a beautician or as a barber, you are all but guaranteed a job— because this market stays busy even when others are fading out. Most people are wanting to look good, and are willing to pay you to make sure it happens. The job market is only going to get more competitive; make sure you are ready! incidents, by no means should be considered a common occurrence, but are enough to deter some of the theories, as to why these birds are dying. Two cases in Australia in 2009 cited hundreds of birds dropping dead in two different cities within a year. Both of the cases blamed toxins as the cause. As the days go on, more and more cases of dead animals, not just birds, dying in mass quantities are being reported. Almost a week after the first reporting in Arkansas, nearly a 100,000 dead fish turned up in an Arkansas river. Millions of dead fish have also been found along the Maryland coast. These deaths are not limited to the Unites States. The fish kills have also been seen in Brazil and New Zealand. Hundreds of dead birds also showed up in Italy. On the beaches in England, 40,000 dead crabs have washed ashore. Although in-depth testing is still being conducted, many scientists believe that all of the incidents are unrelated. In the United States, the cause scientists are blaming for the bird deaths are fireworks. In Italy, they are fairly certain that the dead birds died as a result of massive indigestion. As for the fish, crabs, and even the birds, the unusually cold weather is also a factor playing a role in the deaths of all the animals. 4 RAISE YOUR VOICE Did Term Assessments Kill Attendance? Mandatory Tests May Encourage Poor Attendance By Mariah Harris, Reporter Everyone has the same opinion on Term Assessments, we ABHOR them. We got into the habit of being able to waive them, by not having any disciplinary problems and being allowed to miss up to 3 days, but now everyone has to take them, no questions asked. Attendance was the thing that everyone was concerned about. Now, the administration has given us an excuse to miss school any time: “Oh well, if I have to take assessments anyway, then I’m never coming to school.” This mindset was the attitude of a lot of students, who, I would say, really don’t care about their education in the first place. The student body soon realized if they wanted to pass the class to obtain the credit, and stay in their right grade to graduate on time, then they were going to have to be present at school to know what they were required to learn for these Term Assessments. I think a lot of the time students forget that teachers get paid whether or not you decide to come to school, or if you pass the class or not. They already have their education; you are cheating yourself out of that same opportunity. The attendance level in 2009 was, in my opinion a little shameful. In the time period of August- September, the attendance percentage was 95.01. For the month of October, it decreased 4.02 percent, which ended up being a percent of 90.99. For the month of November, the numbers increased about 1.61 percent and ended up at 92.6 percent and decreased 3.59 percent to our low of 89.01 percent. That means, in 2009, 5-11% of our students missed school each month. In comparison to last year, not surprisingly, our attendance is worse so far for the year 2010. Is this because missing school doesn’t change the fact that everyone has to take the Term Assessments? Compared to last year, August- September our attendance decreased 2.34 percent giving us a 92.67 percent of our students in attendance. November had the biggest decrease of 2.94 percent with attendance rates of only 89.66 percent. For the month of December, there was an increase of 0.46 percent, which reached to 89.47 percent; so again, 11% of our students are missing school. Yes, it is true that Term Assessment can be a bit of a hassle, but they are designed to help you in the long run. Ask yourself this question, “Before Term Assessments, have you ever taken a final?” The answer to this question is many of us have not, yet are planning on seeking higher education and have no clue as to how to study for a final. So before you have that attitude of “I’m not going to school, simply because I don’t have to” think about how you are hurting yourself, and ask yourself, “Is it worth it?” Letter to the Editor by Sami Sherlock Dear Editor: I am a senior here at Limestone, and during my four years here there hasn’t been much that has really bothered me about this school until recently. Throughout my years at Limestone, I have had C lunch only this year, last semester as well as this semester. My family is currently having financial problems, and, to be honest, the alacarte menu is way too expensive anyways, so I have no problem eating regular lunch with my free/reduced lunch privilege. I don’t like cheese so I was pleased when I saw that we were having hamburgers instead of cheeseburgers. It had been awhile since I had anything but a baked potato and half a sandwich, so I made my way through the regular lunch line. As I got closer to the food choices, I noticed there were no hamburgers left. I looked over my shoulder to the other line and that side was out of hamburgers as well. Thinking maybe the ladies hadn’t brought out a new batch, I asked if there were any left. The answer I got was no. After grabbing a piece of pizza that I knew I wasn’t going to eat, I bickered and complained the rest of the way though line, sat down, and after awhile dumped my tray with only a few bites take from my pizza. I think it is completely unfair that there is not enough food made for every student in the school. Just because a student has C lunch doesn’t mean that there shouldn’t be all of the food choices left for them. I honestly don’t know what else to do about this problem except write to the editor, so that is what I am doing. I know it’s a little over exaggerative, but that ruined my day at school, and I went through the rest of the day hungry and grumpy. I hope this problem is resolved in years to come, and students in C lunch have just as many choices of food as those in A lunch. GET A JOB! EXPERIENCE NEEDED! Autum Greeson, Editor In Chief Henry B. Adams once said, “All experience is an arch, to build upon.” This quote is the base of this whole article. Experience is something everyone should obtain before leaving high school, and not just at school, but at a job as well. Having a part-time job in high school should be imperative to all teenagers since it gives you experience and teaches you many of life’s important and valuable lessons. When I was a freshman, I dreaded the day my mother told me I should get a job. I wanted to have the time to hang out with my friends and enjoy being a teenager. It was fun to not worry about everything. However, when she told me, I was more than excited to start. I knew that taking the step of getting a job would help me in the future. I felt like I was taking on a great responsibility and becoming more independent. Once I had a job, I knew I was learning so much more about reality than someone ever could teach you in a classroom. When you have a job, you become more responsible in all aspects of life, including financially. You learn how to manage your own money. You also learn how to save your money and when to spend it. After you find a job, you also become better prepared for the future. If you don’t have A PLACE FOR US Amber Allen, Reporter When it comes to teens, we need a place to call our own. The problem for most teens is that there is nowhere to go to hangout with friends. When we were kids we could go to places like Planet-x, a park, or find joy out of some of the simplest things. Now that we are teens, it’s different. Teens want to do something that’s not so childish, and, yet at the same time, we want to be treated somewhat as adults. The only problem with that is that the only place for teens to go is Stone Country or to house parties. Though Stone Country is a place for teens, it’s also a place for adults which don’t make it a “teen” spot. When teens want to let go and have fun, we can’t because it still feels like we are under surveillance. Because of this, teens then turn to parties where there is most likely alcohol and other things that are illegal. So, in a way, there is no safe place for teens to hangout, except the movies a job, you won’t know what to expect when you first start to work. One day, I was sitting in Mrs. Belsly’s Human Relations class when she started talking to us about her niece. Mrs. Belsly said her niece never had a job while in high school or in first year college. Every time she went to apply to a place for a parttime job, she was denied, even at McDonald’s, because she didn’t have any work experience prior to that. Having a job is important in the life of a teenager. I cannot stress how much a job would benefit everyone here at school. I’m also not saying that you have to have a job as a freshman, but you should definitely have a job by the time you graduate, in order to obtain enough experience before going off to college on your own. or restaurants, which I can guarantee no one wants to constantly, go just to hangout. It becomes boring and it can start to add up in money, which not everyone can afford. There is one other alternative place to go that can be for teens to go to hangout with friends: the mall. Teens normally go to the mall to shop and visit with friends, but, as far as being at the mall for hours, it tends to become boring to just walk around. It becomes pointless to be at the mall without cash because you can’t afford the items you want. Teens need a place to go where there won’t be any kids or adults. We need a place that’s inexpensive, alcohol free, and drug free. It also has to be in a place where it will be safe and easy to go to. Teens need a place where they can have as much fun as they want without being put down for it. MEANNESS IS NOT ATTRACTIVE Never Try To Take Someone’s Dignity; It is Worth Nothing to You, But It is worth Everything to Them. Autum Greeson, Reporter “You’re a dirty little liar!” This is one of the many mean and nasty statements that were said in the movie Mean Girls. Now that there are two Mean Girls movies, people are now starting to realize that this is not just acting anymore. We go to these movies to laugh at how ridiculous these girls look, but you really don’t need to Got Answers? Ask the Experts Compiled by Autum Greeson WHAT ARE SOME PLACES TO GO ON A DATE IN THE WINTER? ROCKET RHONDA: Ice Skating. It definitely gives the guy an excuse to get closer to the girl on the date. If the girl falls, pretend like you are going to pick her up, pretend to fall next to her, and purposely make yourself look stupid. This will help her feel better about herself. If you want, though, you can also have a little fun competition and see who falls down the least. This will provide lots of laughs. If you are a girl, fall on purpose. It makes guys feel good to be better than you at something. RAISE YOUR VOICE 5 go pay to see it. Just take a look at some of the clusters of girls in our own halls. It’s reality here at Limestone, among groups of girls, teams, and classes. More and more Limestone girls are becoming, what I like to call, outrageously catty. This means that they are mean-spirited, bullying others as a group, seeking out someone to hate. So my question is why? Why do we act this way? Some people say it is because girls are jealous, jealous of someone else’s looks, ability, or circumstance. Rather than making ourselves better, we choose, instead, to cut someone else to pieces. Most of the time, the gossip we pass along isn’t even true, but it sure makes the rounds. We want to be the one with everything, not the girl in the shadows. Other people believe that girls are mean to others because they want to feel superior, like they are more important than someone else. What they don’t understand is that this kind of behavior, while it may get you a laugh at first, is only sets up a reputation as a nasty individual. Most people can pinpoint them out in our halls: the groups of girls tightly hanging together, the allpowerful cliques, the ones who are always together, weekday, school day, weekends. They are exclusive and seem to target someone as a group, never one on one. Perhaps they’re WHAT CAN I GIVE MY SWEETHEART ON VALENTINE’S DAY? ROCKET RHONDA: The most cliché things are the greatest. The best way to go is a huge box of chocolate in a heart shaped box and lots of conversational hearts. Funny Valentine’s Day cards from Hallmark are also a great option. Another great idea is to create a CD with many lovey-dovey songs that make your significant other think of you. Avoid things like rings, perfume, or jewelry of any kind. These are landmines just waiting to happen. MISS SEGAL: Girls love receiving flowers. For guys, Bath and Body Works men’s body wash or after shave is good. Guys also love getting baked goods like cookies, brownies, etc. Giving a sweet card/note is another great gift for your sweetheart- if funds are low. MR. BINDER: Burgers, Bowling, and a Toy Store. Pick a diner, have a burger and a shake. Share a straw. This is old fashioned fun at its best. Go bowling. You’ll have so many laughs; you won’t want the night to end. And when you’re done bowling, take your sweetie to the Toy Store. I know it sounds weird, but you’ll be surprised how much fun you’ll have reminiscing about when you were little. Pick out a toy for your loved one that represents how you feel about them. This memento will remind you of your wonderful date…and will forever remind you of your love for one another. Sounds corny, but it works every time. If you have questions for Rhonda Rocket or the experts, email them to [email protected] whispering, looking down their noses at other girls, or they’re madly sending nasty text messages or leaving notes on websites like Facebook. Sometimes, it even extends to vandalism or destruction of property. No matter what the action, it is destructive and mean, and doesn’t gain them anything. “It’s girl world, not the jungle.” Really? Isn’t girl world now just like a jungle anyway? Girls no longer have cat fights, but all out brawls. Girls aren’t just scratching, pulling hair, and slapping. They’re punch and tackling other girls. More surprisingly, some girls are being sent to the hospital because of it. It’s not all physical either. Girls send rude text messages, spill secrets, and spread undesirable rumors about each other. In many cases, the victims of these mean girls would rather be physically attacked then endure the mental abuse. At least that can be defended against. It’s idiotic drama that girls are adding to this society. Girls need to be aware of what they are doing and here’s a suggestion: actually be nice to each other. If girls would just knock off their attitudes and actually take the time to think, there probably wouldn’t be as many problems then there are now. Everyone knows who you are, and what you are doing. It’s unfortunate that you are going to be remembered for being catty, backstabbing, nasty, and exclusive to your own group, rather than being a nice girl, someone who is actually likeable. Bankruptcy with A Fill Up Gas Prices Increase Again to Ridiculous Heights Tanner Haller, Reporter When you leave the gas station, and the owner waves to you, he is not waving to you because he is your friend, he is waving to you because he has his hand in your wallet, and you cannot do a thing about it. The companies are draining your wallet faster than they can drill for oil. They have everyone who owns a car over a barrel. Think about it; you need gas to commute every day, and they make money on the gas you need. It is not like people can boycott buying gas, and it is certainly not the early nineteenth century where people walked everywhere. Now people these days are too stingy and will not let you ride in their car. Experts say that you should keep a full tank of gas in the winter, but how easy is that when you go bankrupt every time you fill your tank? Around the holidays everyone who drives knows how much prices can jump. Wise people fill their tank up before the prices go up and keep their driving at a minimum. Dumb people always waste their gas on the day they get it and wonder why they can’t buy any Christmas presents. Most of the gas prices are over three dollars per gallon, the highest price is at $3.39 per gallon off of I-55 in Lexington, and it goes down the list to only $2.93 off of route 23 in Chillicothe. If someone has a big truck, they average around 10 to 12 miles per gallon. That is horrible gas mileage. When they commute back and forth to work every day, they most likely fill up every other day. Even if they have a car that obtains 25 miles per gallon, they would still be filling up two out of every seven days. That is still enough to run you dry. As most people know, taxis and busses help save money, but how many busses do you see around Bartonville? +The answer is in fact, maybe two or three every couple times you go, sometimes not even that. In summary, prices cannot be stopped. The gas companies are too powerful. No matter how much we conserve, they can do whatever they want with our wallets. The only solution to that is to stop driving all together, but I don’t foresee people jumping for that. 6 SPORTS SPORTS College Bowl SHORTS Games End LCHS Wrestling Tests Strengths Wrestling is Often Considered “Toughest Sport” Nichole Capranica, Reporter DONIVINE STEWART SURPASSES LIMESTONE RECORD, NEARS CONFERENCE RECORD Boys Basketball Standout Donivine Stewart has claimed another record: he surpassed the all-time scoring record for Limestone. Against Dunlap, here at home, he beat LCHS grad DeAaron Williams’ old record of 1868 points, and is now the record holder in the Conference. He is attending Bradley University next year. GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AT THE TOP OF CONFERENCE Limestone’s girls basketball team is making a name for itself in the Mid-Illini, after an upset win over Morton on their turf. Morton had beaten our girls once at home, and the Lady Rockets went back to Morton wanting to even the score. Now these two powerhouse teams, tied for the Conference lead, will not meet again until the Regional tournament. Look in the next issue for big news from this team in the post-season! SOFTBALL PRE-SEASON The Limesone girls softball season is about to go into high gear, and the girls are ready for a great season. Under new head coach Molly Hardesty, the girls are looking for this season to be a competitive one. The Mid-Illini standings are up for grabs, and it looks like the Lady Rockets could be near the top this spring. With several juniors returning from last year’s varsity team and a solid group of sophomores, this young team has talent and experience on its side. The schedule is a tough one, but the girls are in good hands with Coach Hardesty and Coach Stoner at the helm. The season officially begins March 22 in Galesburg, with the home opener double header against O’Fallon here on March 26 at 1:00 p.m. Katie Metcalf, Reporter From tears to cheers, there is definitely reason to celebrate the commendable effort put forth by all the players this season. With retiring coaches, to reprimanded quarterbacks, there have been anything but boring college bowl games this season. On January 10, 2011, Auburn and Oregon faced off at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona for the National Championship. Cameron Newton— the quarterback for Auburn—played a big role, as expected, in Auburn’s win, with a final score of 22 to 19. Newton was cleared to play in the SEC Championship, despite allegations that his father paid Mississippi State and Auburn to accept him. Despite his tribulations, Newton still won the Heisman trophy. While it does not seem he will be joining the Bulldogs, it is expected that Newton will be joining the pros very soon. The Rose Bowl, which took place on January 1st in Pasadena, California, pitted Wisconsin against Texas Christian University. In the end, TCU won 21 to 19. Earlier that day, Florida and Penn State battled it out in the Outback Bowl at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. While Penn State was first to score, and their victory seemed assured, Florida pulled ahead at the end—when it counts—and won 37 to 24. Also on January 1st, the Fiesta Bowl took place. Connecticut and Oklahoma met at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Oklahoma—scoring in every quarter—beat Connecticut into the dust with a winning score of 48 to 20. Later that week, Stanford and Virginia Tech faced off on January 3rd in Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. Next year, Stanford’s team may be at a loss of a key element: their coach. Jim Harbaugh, the team’s former coach, is unfortunately leaving the team. He will now be coaching the San Francisco 49ers. All in all, by the end of the game, Stanford gave it all they had and won with a shattering score of 40 to 12. The next day Ohio State played Arkansas in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. Ohio State won 31 to 26, but with this victory comes misfortune. Five players, including Terrelle Pryor, the team’s quarterback, from Ohio State have been banned from the first five games of next season for selling team memorabilia and receiving undeserved discounts from a tattoo parlor. For all of you Fighting Illini fans out there, it is worth mentioning their December 29th victory over Baylor. The teams played at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas for the Texas Bowl. Illinois had a dramatic victory of 38 to 14, leaving Baylor far behind in their victory. The college bowl games have marked the end of what is surely a memorable college football season. To our beloved retiring coaches, we bid a fond farewell. To our players who have been drafted into the big leagues, we pray for great things ahead of them. And for the misfortune that fell upon a select few, we hope that better things are in store for their future. “Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-tofind alloy called guts.” –Dan Gable. For this year’s wrestling team this quote speaks the truth. The Limestone Wrestling Team has been working hard all year and they have faced a lot of challenges with many more to come. Along with wrestling comes many rules. In order to wrestle in a match, you have to meet weight requirements. If you are any certain amount over your weight class, you will not be able to wrestle. You are also not allowed to have too long of nails or hair. To start off a match, both wrestlers meet in the middle of mat and shake hands. The referee blows the whistle and the match begins. Both athletes must use a strategy to take the other wrestler down to the mat. The objective is to ‘pin’ the opponent on his back for three seconds. Once the match is over they shake hands a second time and the referee raises the hand of the winner. The challenges of wrestling are phenomenal. Junior Ben Deig, however, is dominating this year. “That kid’s a beast,” said wrestling fan and teammate Chad Toland. A portion of the challenges these athletes face are injuries. V a r s i t y wrestler, Pat Bruce, is still suffering from a football injury. With a slight tear in his MCL, a torn ACL, and a torn meniscus, Pat has said it has been hard and frustrating while waiting for his release to wrestle again. Even though he can’t participate at practices, he still attends them and is making a comeback by working on his balance and doing leg workouts. One challenge most people don’t think of is being one of the only girls on a wrestling team full of boys. Jerica Browder has wrestled for two years and knows all about roughing it out with the boys. She says wrestling with high school boys is harder because they are physically more muscular and that no matter how good a girl is, they are always looked at as a girl. Jerica stated, “Wrestling is fun and I like to say I’ve accomplished something and the coaches are great.” With the season coming to an end everyone is hoping to make state. The team truly believes in their logo: Wrestling doesn’t choose you, you choose wrestling. With their number of winning games on the rise, they are surely looking at a potentially great season. There have been games that were close, so close that they could have gone either way, and some have fallen into our “win” column, and , unfortunately, some have not. But all of the records only count until the post-season, when every team starts over with a new schedule, ready to change history. We all know about March Madness. From games and events at the Civic Center downtown to the college level, March is centered around this one great sport: basketball. March 1st, 2nd, and 4th are Regionals for Limestone, March 8th, 9th, and 11th are Sectionals, and March 18th and 19th is the state tournament. The team is coached by Mr. Sparrow. As of January 21, 2011, they have a record of 9-7. They are 3-3 for the conference and finished third at the Pekin tournament. Coach Sparrow said that they have a good team, but injuries have plagued the players. Inconsistency has been their problem, since they have not yet had many practices with the team all together. For regionals, Coach Sparrow noted that the competition will be tough. They are facing teams such as Manual, Peoria Central, and Canton, but Sparrow is hopeful and says, “We have as good of a shot as anyone.” There is no outright favorite, as there has been in the past. About sectionals, he commented, “We have to win regionals first.” Sparrow admitted they have some tough opponents, including Peoria Notre Dame. As for state, “We have to win the one, before we can even think about the end.” Their competition this season has been, “Very good,” Sparrow says. Although they have had losses against Peoria Notre Dame, Manual, and Morton, they won against Mt. Carmel. Chad Toland, reporter Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts and non-martial arts traditions, to be used in competitions. Competition has been so difficult because the other teams have a practice consistency that Limestone has not had the luxury of having. As far as the season ahead, it could go either way. We hope our injured Rockets will have a quick recovery, but these inconveniences cannot kill the Rocket spirit! NFL SEASON ALMOST OVER SUPERBOWL COMES DOWN TO PACKERS/STEELERS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP Chris Butler, Section Editor The regular season is over and now comes the postseason, where real stars will shine, where the best of the best will prevail and a new champion will be crowned. Twelve teams entered into the playoffs, all considered the best of their division, and only one will be standing on top on February 6. The NFC started their first Wildcard playoff game on Saturday, January 8 with the defending champion, New Orleans Saints(10-6) visiting the NFC West champion, Seattle Seahawks(7-9). The Saints came into the game as the obvious favorite, as the Seahawks were a ten point underdog. Coming into the fourth quarter, the Saints were down by 14 and they scored 16 points in the fourth quarter but still fell short 41-36. The next game was the first AFC Wildcard playoff game featuring the New York Jets facing off with last year’s AFC champion and this year’s AFC South champion the Indianapolis Colts. It was a close battle between two really good teams, but the best team prevailed as the Jets went on to kick the game winning field goal and win by one, 17-16. On Sunday January 9, the Wildcard round of the playoffs resumed with the Baltimore Ravens against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City hasn’t won a playoff game since 1994, but the streak continues as the Ravens won by a landslide; 30-7. In that same day, the Packers and Eagles faced off at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. These two teams met in week one of the regular season and Green Bay won 27-20. Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn’t get their revenge against the Pack; the Packers won; 21-16. The following weekend was the Divisional round, where these games would produce the teams to play in the Conference championship games. First up was the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Baltimore Ravens, as they renew a regular season conference rivalry. The Ravens were ahead in the first half, 21-7, but the Steelers came back in the second half to win it, 31-24. The next game was in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome, as the Falcons took on the rolling Packers. The Falcons came in as the number one seed, but the Packers didn’t pay attention to that as they won in style, 48-21. One division foe of the Packers is the number two seeded Bears, as they hosted the surprise team of the playoffs, the Seattle Seahawks. The Bears took advantage of them in the first half by scoring three touchdowns to start the game, and went on to win 35-24. The final game of the weekend was the game everyone was waiting to see; the Jets visiting the New England Patriots. Both teams were trashing talking each other all week long, but on Sunday, it came to play the game. The Jets were off to a good start by limiting Tom Brady, and rushing to throw wild balls and interceptions. Then, the Patriots started to come back, but it wasn’t enough as the Jets held off the late surge and won, 28-21, MMA IS THE NEW BEST SPORT to go back to the AFC Championship game for the second year in a row. For the final games of the playoffs, before the Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers took on the Chicago Bears at a frigid Soldier Field and the New York Jets squared off with the Pittsburgh Steelers at a frozen Hines Field. All of the teams played well, but only two could leave victorious. First up were the Packers at the Bears. The Pack got off to a fast start by scoring a touchdown on the opening drive. The Bears defense started off slow and stayed that way for most of the game. Even with Jay Cutler hurt on the sideline, they stared to come back late in the game, but 337 pound nose guard, B.J. Raji intercepted Caleb Hanie and ran it back for a touchdown, which sealed the game for the Packers and left many Bears fans disappointed, 21-14. The second and final game of the day was the New York Jets visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers got off to a quick start in the first half, by going up 24-3, but in the second half they didn’t score a point. The Jets started to catch fire, but the point deficit was just too much to come back from as the Steelers are headed to their eighth Super Bowl and the third since 2005. Both teams are worthy of this prestigious game, but only one can win it. The Packers don’t have as much experience with a young team, as for the Steelers, they have been to three under Roethlisberger and two under Tomlin, but the best team will come out to play and leave victorious. Super Bowl XLV will be played on February 6 on FOX at 5:00 PM. MMA started as a small private sport, but soon became a widely known brutal competition between two fighters. An ancient Olympic combat sport which was invented in Greece, was known as Pankration and featured a combination of grappling and striking skills, similar to modern mixed martial arts. To win in a match is normally gained either by the judges’ decision after a selected amount of time, a submission, the opponent’s cornerman throwing in the towel, or of course by knockout. There are 9 different weight classes. These 9 weight classes include f lyweight (up to 125 lbs), bantamweight (126–135lbs), featherweight (136–145 lbs), lightweight (146 –155 lbs), welter weight (156 –170lbs) middleweight (171–185 lbs), light heavyweight (186–205 lbs), heavyweight (206–265lbs), and some organizations even go on to have a super heavyweight which is anything heavier than 265 pounds. There are some Pay Per View matches coming up soon on February 5th. These matches are Silvia versus Belfort and Griffin versus Franklin on UFC 126. There are also Penn versus Fitch and Bisping versus Rivea on UFC 127. If you get interested and would want to sign up for some training you can do that at some local gyms: 3900 W. But really guys, this gift says “this game is so cool...so how could she not love it!” It’s a gift for “yourself” that you hope she can get into. Not very romantic. We’re just not interested in perfecting our Metallica Guitar Hero riffs today guys. 9) Facebook Gift Maybe cute on random days of the year, but NOT on Valentine’s Day. It says you’re a cheapskate and too lazy to go out to get us a gift that shows some thoughtfulness. 8) Hockey Tickets See also Basketball, Football, Monster Truck Jam, etc. You get the idea. Another gift that stinks of getting a gift mostly for yourself. At least put some thought into what WE might enjoy and not just tolerate for you. 7) Gym Membership Just what exactly are you trying to say here? That we’re not attractive enough for you. You think our bodies need some fixing up. What a turn off. 6) Weight Loss Pills What?!?! See also Gym Membership, but way worse! You think we’re fat. Great. 5) Home Pregnancy Test Again...what?!?! 4) Vacuum Cleaner/Cleaning Products Yeah this is romantic...not! Do you think we actually enjoy household chores? We would much rather get something sweet and romantic. You can think of us as love slaves instead;) NAME THIS MOVIE “I’ve never even kissed a guy before” “Hey me neither” email your answer to [email protected] 3) Trinkets From The Dollar Store Ok we’re not saying that our gifts have to be expensive. We don’t expect diamonds or a new car. But at least if you don’t have much money, use your imagination a little bit. 2) Gag Gifts Fart cushions and fake vomit don’t amuse us. Especially on Valentine’s Day! 1) Nothing The number one worst possible gift that you could get your special girl is to get nothing at all. I don’t think this needs much explanation. Horoscopes Aries March 21 through April 21 JUST FOR FUN 9 You are insightful, creative and adaptive but don’t RAM (Get it?) it down people’s throats. Stop being so stubborn and plan a little. Your spontaneous side is great for good times, but bad for stuff like finishing a college degree in four years. Friends, lovers, and family members love your devotion, but not your late night calls. Try to reign in that big personality from time to time, but by all means keep making fun of authority figures even if it lands you in the slammer from time to time. It’s funny. Taurus April 21 through May 21 You’re a bull on the outside, but a softy at heart. Practical and efficient and always being hit up for money and favors. Let some of your deadbeat friends hit their parents up for money for a change and put more money into your retirement fund! Your shoulders are wet with the tears of friends, and your strength and stamina can carry a heavy burden. If you just ducked out to the movies once in and awhile, and let some of those needy friends’ phone calls go into voicemail, you’ll find you’ll have a lot more fun. You are great teachers, big sisters/brothers (hey Bud), and philanthropists. What Is It? Gemini May 21 through June 21 When you’re hot, you’re hot Gemini! And when you’re not, polar bears would call your heart too cold. Tarzan didn’t swing as much as you do, but boy isn’t life interesting around you. You inspire and motivate others and are very affectionate. You generally get away with stuff you really shouldn’t even be doing. We can’t help but love you, but somedays you make us keep trying not to. Cancer June 21 through July 21 You play your cards so close to the vest, a person has to perform something like a circumcision just to take a look. You can be moody, but you hide it almost too well. Your friends and loved ones would love to get a peek at what’s behind that conservative exterior. Your family, friends, co-workers, and loved ones always put you in charge of buying the group card, love your scrapbooks, and dinners at your house are always a hit. Make other people help you clean up. Yes, even if they do it wrong. Leo July 21 through August 21 Be it king of the jungle or the litter box, no job is too small for you to be the leader. Your quick decisiveness makes you a great leader even when you’re leading the charge straight to hell. You are brave, vocal about your opinions, and even right a lot of the times. You missed the Sesame Street episode where you were taught to share or perhaps you just hoarded the TV and thought the rest of us missed it. Virgo August 21 through September 21 You may be a virgin, but you did some heavy kissing with the blarney stone. Your outlandish stories and convincing charm make you fun in any and all social situations. Your analytical skills and intuition makes you annoying to watch a murder mystery with, but when it comes to solving and planning, you’re the shiz-net Sherlock. You friend, loved ones, and co-workers all want the seat next to you at a dinner party. Luckily you can talk loudly. Libra September 21 through October 21 You may be an introvert, but your stealthy debating skills can come out as fast as paparazzi swarms Brittany Spears. Naturally, because of the scale thing, your deal is balance, stability, justice, harmony, etc. But if it’s possible to overdose on balanced goals, honey, you FOUND IT. Scorpio October 21 through November 21 You are such a contradiction, well, no you’re not. Often misunderstood, turbulently driven, incredibly ambitious and put it all together and that spells trouble and obsession for anyone dating you or trying to get you to accept a job offer. Learn to place your bets a little sooner so the rest of the world can feel secure for a change. You can keep a secret especially when it’s about your thoughts and feelings. Your calm cool exterior fools everyone and no one. You’re ideally suited to be a wealthy business man or any profession as long as you’re boss and making big bucks. The hippy-artist, wanderer life does not 1. Valentine Heart Candies 2. MRI of a human heart 3. a diamond 4. a red rose suit you. Sagittarius November 21 through December 21 You think, therefore you think the rest of us should leave you alone to think. You do your best when the odds are stacked against you. In the horse-race of life, you’re a Centaur who likes come from behind in those last few legs. Hurry up and figure out the meaning of life, so the world can tie you down already. Remember, to win a race, even if you want to come from behind, you have to choose a direction. Try not to get too distracted with EVERYTHING all the time Capricorn December 21 through January 21 Well you critical and practical goat, this is going to be a baaaaad horoscope. You’re highly intelligent and will undoubtedly find this entire page to be a sham. But your step-by-step nature may enjoy the following equation: Everybody else gives sucky advice, Capricorn, so use your patience, intuition and incredible planning skills to schedule time to dwell on problems. They pass, but give yourself time to be upset before moving on. For crying out loud, you stubborn goat, use that big brain and schedule in your depression. Aquarius January 21 through February 21 What the heck is The Water Bearer? Aquarius, you so got the shaft. Your unorthodox methods can get many a goal accomplished, however, sometimes those methods include sitting around a lot and kind of being lazy. You are honest, loyal and original and apparently water bearing. Use your philosophical and artistic mind to come up with a better horoscope. Pisces February 21 through March 21 You’re no cold fish, just sort of luke-warm--hehe. Nah, you’re red, hot, hot, hot. You just keep a low profile while you acquire a wide sea of knowledge. You + A little Danger = FUN You + Caution = You all the time Your generous nature can be taken advantage of, but your determination and passion always guarantees whatever is lost is easily won back. Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snow Tubing Fill Winter Days With Fun Austin Dearing, Reporter It’s easy to get the winter blahs if you’re always sitting indoors in front of the TV, but how do you stay active when it’s cold outside? If you’re wondering about ideas for fun winter activities you can enjoy with your family and friends look no further! Whether it is to go sledding, ice skating, or skiing you should definitely check out some of the Ski Resorts around the Peoria/Northern Illinois area. Snowstar is one of the closest ski slopes around here, which is about one hour and forty minutes away in Andalusia, IL. Lift tickets are $31 on weekends and $18 on weekdays. Ski/snowboard rental is $26. Snowstar is just a small place to learn how to ski or snowboard, or to show up the beginners if you are really good. Snowstar has grown into a 28-acre winter sports park which includes snow tubing, snowboarding and skiing. If it is your first time, then Snowstar would be a good place to go. Only in the Midwest will you find such an unexpected diamond in the rough, Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort. Chestnut, which is about a three hour drive from Peoria, is a much bigger place including 19 ski runs, four of which are Beginner, 11 Intermediate, three Black Diamond(Advanced), and one Terrain park with jumps and rails. Lift tickets are $40 on weekdays and $47 on weekends; ski/ snowboard rental is $32. High above the Mississippi, tucked nicely in the hills near historic Galena, Chestnut Mountain is a premier Illinois resort that offers nineteen trails which span 220 rolling acres with a total vertical drop of 475 feet. Midwesterners love their elbow room and Chestnut Mountain is no exception. Sundown is another ski resort located in Dubuque, Iowa about three hours and ten minutes away. Sundown Mountain has 23 runs: eight Easy, nine Intermediate, three Black Diamond (Advanced), and three Terrain Parks. Sundown Mountain is big, beautiful and exiting. Countless skiers and riders return year after year to enjoy their slopes. Over six years they were the only Midwest resort granted the NSAA (National Ski Area Association) Award of Excellence. The top of the mountain looks over 100 square miles, carved out of a century old cedar forest reminiscent of Colorado. Cascade Mountain is an about an hour north of Chestnut, four hours away from Peoria in Wisconsin Dells, along Interstate 90/94. Lift tickets are $45 and ski rental is $34. Snow Tubing is a great activity for the whole family. Imagine the thrill of sliding down a snowy, 800 foot long chute and then effortlessly riding a surface lift back up. Tubes are provided and no experience is needed. Just hop in a tube and enjoy the ride. However, to rent a tube, it will cost $22. Even if there is no snow on the ground, know that it isn’t a problem on these hills: each of these places has the ability to manufacture their own snow! Well, I had been hearing that Five Guys Burgers and Fries changes all that. People generally said that their burgers are better than anyone else’s. How? Are their cows served special food? It just didnt’ make sense. So I decided to check it out myself. On Saturday January 23, I took a trip to Five Guys Burgers and Fries to try it out. For those of you who may not know, this is the new fast-food restaurant in Westlake Plaza, across from Northwoods Mall. The building is glass fronted, with red and white as the color scheme. The entire restaurant looks like a red and white warehouse. When I walked in I thought it would take forever to get to the register to place my order; the line of hungry burger-wanters was all the way out the door. I settled in for a long wait, but that didn’t happen. The service at this place is phenomenal. I was at the register in around 4 minutes; it takes them no time to get people in and out. At the register I ordered a cheese burger Winter Concerts Major Stars Visit Illinois This Winter Abbie Tinnon, Reporter When the snow is on the ground, and there is nothing to do outside, a winter concert may be just what you are looking for. It gives you a chance to listen to a great band, as well as spend some time inside. There are several venues in Illinois that host concerts and events, all of which are relatively close to Peoria. The concerts are pricey, but if you are truly a fan, it may be money well-spent. On February 11 through the 13, the Monster Jam Pit Party is at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL. Rosemont is 3 hours away from Bartonville. Any Monster Truck fans who are interested better be willing to pay a lot for tickets, anywhere from $57 to $142. Most of them require a little driving and a lot of money, but all should be good shows. Major concerts are exciting and memorable, and will definitely be a night well-spent. and a small fry with a regular drink. The total cost for one person is around $10, which is the average price anywhere you go. After I ordered my meal, I filled my drink and waited for my number to be called. Around the restaurant they have sacks of peanuts to snack on while waiting for your food. With the restaurant having limited space it’s very hard to find a table, so your best bet is to set your stuff on a table before you order or have one member of your group go on table patrol so you’ll have one. When my number was called, my food came to me in a brown paper bag. I knew this was going to be good: the grease was soaking throught the bag before I walked to my table. I sat down and got started. The first thing I noticed is that every regular “burger” you order from Five Guys is actually a double burger. The burger, from top bun to bottom bun, was almost five inches tall. (See the picture to the left: it’s the real deal!) The best part was the onions—Five Guys puts grilled Extra Innings Rocks the Game New Indoor Baseball/Softball Facility Has Something for Everyone Abbie Tinnon, Reporter For spring or fall athletes, the winters can seem neverending. For those of us used to playing outdoors, the snow and cold offer not only bleak days, but no chance of keeping game skills sharp. Extra Innings, an indoor baseball and softball facility, changed that. I first learned of Extra Innings through my summer travel team. The facility is in a warehouse on Quest Drive in Bloomington, about 40 miles from Bartonville. Believe me, it’s worth the drive! The building has 12,000 square feet of baseball and softball space, including 6 tunnels for hitting, throwing, and pitching, as well as a workout/training room and a pro shop stocked with all you may need. We met there to work with the resident hitting coach at Extra Innings, Daryn Miller. Coach Miller has an extensive background in baseball and softball, and he is a true student of the art of hitting. Coach Miller went to East Peoria High School, played for Lake Land junior college, and the University of Memphis. He has played men’s fastpitch for 15 years, and is a member of the USA men’s national team. Coach Miller is amazing. When he first started working with me, he had me onions on the bottom bun. It’s truly amazing. One order of regular fries is more than enough for two people—don’t bother getting the large order! The first Five Guys Burgers and Fries opened in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia. In 2003, they decided to go bigger and open around the country. As of today, there are 725 stores around the country. Every burger at Five Guys is fresh, never frozen ground beef; in fact, there are no freezers in any Five Guys restaurant. Nothing is ever frozen. There are 250,000 different ways to order a Five Guys burger. Head out to Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Eating at Five Guys was a great experience and they have burgers you’ll never forget about. hit about ten balls off of a tee. Never once did he watch the ball. He looked at my feet, knees, hips, hands, arms, shoulders, and head. He made a few minor adjustments to my stance, and everything changed; instead of simply hitting the ball, I was crushing it. After working with Coach Miller on my hitting, he introduced me to another staff member at Extra Innings, baseball instructor Dan Blewitt. Coach Blewitt not only instruct baseball pitchers, he is also the resident fitness guru; as a certified strength coach, he conducts athletic training that will guarantee to make anyone a better athlete. It clearly states that his training is for serious athletes only, and I believe it; he works us hard, for an hour at a time, focusing on different muscle groups. Dan’s approach is to give elite athletes body and muscle control, and his methods are proven. Two other trainers at Extra Innings are hitting and fielding instructor Casey McIntosh and softball pitching instructor Lori Baird. I never worked with these two, but if they are on this team, I am sure they are well worth it. Regular athletes are a dime a dozen; serious athletes need to work a little bit harder to become great. Extra Innings is meant just for that--to take talent and make it phenomenal. Players and coaches alike would benefit from this place, and group rates are available. Many people use the New Year as an excuse to experience different looks. Clothes, hair, and accessories are some of the biggest fashion trends people like to play with. Over the years, the fads have come and gone, and sometimes come back again, and the trends that have been projected for this year, will prove to be no different. Although guys might not think it, they themselves also have many new fashion trends as well. Guys and girls alike, one of the biggest trends that we both are going to see over the year is motorcycle/biker fashion. This look is being played out in many ways this year. The motorcycle look has taken over the military look, which has been at the front for some time now. When it comes to the guys, there are different ways for them to rock the look then there are for the women. In order to pull off the motorcycle-chic trend some essentials include the motorcycle jacket, leather pants or leggings, and zippers. Even though the men are keeping the color scheme to a simple black, the women are incorporating browns, silver, and neutrals into their styles. Another trend on the rise right now is lace and shiny/sequins. The main culprit behind the rise of this trend is said to be Taylor Swift and her love for all things shiny and feminine. The right way to wear this is to find a balance between romantic and not too girly. Lace and sequins are taking over shirts, dresses, skirts, and even our accessories. A fad, which we thought we would never see again, has popped up this year in many ways. The last few years seemed to be about the love for all things eighties, well this year it’s all about our love for the seventies. During the 1970s, the feel from their fashion was more freespirited and boho, while this updated take on the era is more sophisticated. Of course, the only true way to pull off the seventies look is with a pair of high-waisted bell bottoms. Layering with vests and beaded necklaces are another way to pull off the look. Another great option would be the maxi-dress. When it comes to accessories, the biggest trend takeover goes to the purses. While last year was all about having the biggest purse a girl could get her hands on, this year we have downsized. The compact styles are sleek and can still hold all the essentials. Thanks to movies like The Hangover, even men are carrying these satchels. Not only are we carrying smaller purses, but we are wearing smaller heels as well. These smaller heels have been coined “kitten heels.” Kitten heels are the perfect combination of flats and high heels. Of course, major volume is still a must for all hairstyles. If short hair is the style you prefer, then a pixie cut is what is trending right now. Another short cut option would be a bob cut, just a not as short version. For the ladies with long hair, curls are in. Natural waves, tamed curls, banana curls, which ever style you prefer. The key is to just get some curl in your hair. The two hottest hair colors for 2011 are a white blonde or red hair. Some haircuts that the men could try would be a retro look, or a spiky do. When doing the spike guys, be careful to not overdo it on the gel and wind up with a Pauly D look. In the fashion world, there are many new styles to look forward to in the year to come. As the year progresses we will see which looks are a success and which ones die down faster than they came about. Many of the looks can be worn by Fashion Trends: What’s Hot and What’s Not HOT - DENIM TROUSERS NOT - JEGGINGS It looks like jeggings will be taking a back seat to denim trousers. Say bye bye to low rise jeans that bare your butt and opt for denim trousers that have a higher waist. HOT - HONEYSUCKLE NOT - TURQUOISE Honeysuckle will be the “it” color this year. The great thing about honeysuckle is that it is very wearable for men and women, and it compliments a wide variety of skin tones. Red and pinks are the perfect way to wake up a stale winter wardrobe and will look smoking hot once the warmer weather rolls around and you have that summer glow. HOT - BELL BOTTOMS NOT - SKINNY JEANS Now that skinny jeans are pretty much a staple in everyone’s wardrobe it is time to take pants in a different direction with bell bottoms. Some may be gasping at the resurgence of bell bottoms, but when done right, wider pant legs will look fresh and chic. HOT - CAT EYE SUNGLASSES | NOT AVIATOR GLASSES themselves, yet if you are daring enough they can be paired with some of the other trends of the year. Cat eye glasses have a vintage-inspired look that screams ‘50s/’60s glamour. From very subtle cat eye shapes to the more extreme, cat eye sunglasses are a big trend this year. HOT - KITTEN HEELS NOT - STACKED PUMPS 2010 saw sky high heels and boots and we are secretly happy that kitten heels are reemerging as a trend. Kitten heels are perfect for people who love the comfort of flats, but the look of heels. Kitten heels can work particularly well with several of the year’s other trends like full skirts and bell bottoms. They a r e d a i n t y and add a feminine charm to any outfit.
