“It took me 40 years to find out that painting is not sculpture.”
French post impressionist artist Paul Cezanne
President’s
Palette
By Coleen
Bradfield
How many of us spend years working in a single medium only to discover that other
forms of art work hold much for us to discover, accomplish and share. A decision
was recently made by the BVAL Board to limit our use of a theme in our member
show to one of two shows each year. The vote was made by the membership to select
“The Journey” for the November, 2013, theme while leaving the April, 2013, member show open. (Our
2012 November member show theme is still “The Game”)
While the lack of a theme opens the door to encourage all members to participate let us not forget what talented sculptor, Larry Schueckler recently said, “Themes are provided to our members as an opportunity to
examine what we do and challenge ourselves to offer our strongest contribution to this community.” It
is important that a member show truly be representative of our membership and all members feel that they
have art work which they can submit for the show. It is equally important that when the show becomes
more open to all that we still challenge ourselves to make sure that we show the Brazos Valley Community
quality art work be it paint on canvas, clay, bronze, jewelry, or other creative forms of art. I have no doubt
we will.
This November will be an opportunity for many of us to challenge ourselves with the theme of “The
Game.” I hope many take this challenge and fill the Arts Center Gallery with quality works of inspired art.
With hope for a creative year,
Coleen

Meeting Demonstration
Dmitri Koustov ‘s Art:
Summer Atelier above and Virtuozo to the right
After graduating from Ivanovo Art Institute, Dmitri worked in Moscow
and St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 2000, Dmitri lives and works in College Station, Texas, USA. The artist characterizes his art as a search for
the beauty of possible worlds. Dmitri’s paintings combine clear and intensive colors, forming the splendid harmony. The artist presented his works
in a number of personal and group exhibitions in Russia, Germany,
France, and USA. His paintings are included to the multimedia catalog
“Artists of St. Petersburg, the end of the XX century”. The works of
Dmitri Koustov are in collections of the Ivanovo Art Museum, as well as
in private collections in Russia, Germany, France, Austria, Singapore,
England, Finland, and the United States.
“Creating an abstract composition that has a luminous mixture of forms and colors brings me happiness, inner
strength and freedom. I hope that viewers will feel the same when they see my works and that my paintings
will envelope you in a delightful galaxy of new feelings. The freedom of playing with colors and compositions help me to explore worlds not yet discovered. Different techniques and patterns that I use give my paintings dynamism and power. I think that the task of the artist is to show the things that one can feel but not see.
And that’s what I am awaiting form my public--imagination and fantasy.”
Dmitri Koustov’s works are currently represented by the Anya Tish Gallery, 4411 Montrose Boulevard,
Houston, Texas 77006.

Request from a Local Group at A&M :
Howdy! My name is Lauren Friend and I am leading an event through the Farmer's Fight campaign which is
an agriculture advocacy group at Texas A&M. The purpose of this event is to encourage a different type of
perception about the agriculture industry through the utilization of art and design. We will be hosting this idea
at a First Friday, hopefully in November and I would absolutely love it if you could put me into contact with
some local artists and creative minds that might want to use their talents, sell their artwork and promote agriculture. I have attached a link for one of the Farmer's Fight videos which I think might give you a better idea
at our aim. Furthermore, if you happen to know of anyone else who seems like a benefit to our cause please
have them contact me at this e-mail. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks so much!

Brazos Valley Art League Member Show
Call for Entries: The Game
Call For Entries:
“The Game” competition, strategy, training, performance, knowledge, skill, teaming, power, frustration, spirit, attitude, trust, nostalgia, winning, losing, and more. . . .
This November for the BVAL Member’s Show will be exploring the theme of “The Game”. You have the opportunity to
submit up to 3 pieces in any medium interpreting this theme. Your interpretations can be literal or implied. You may write a statement of 100 words or less for each piece but it is not a requirement for entry into the show. However, pieces need to be centered on
the theme in order to be eligible for this exhibit. We encourage new pieces but older pieces fitting the theme will be accepted.
Our theme of “The Game” is very timely given A&M’s entrance into the SEC and The Olympics being held this year. We look forward to a great “tailgate” reception to which we hope you will invite family and friends. Postcards and evites will be sent out for
you to pass along to others. We may even have a few athletes to make
appearances at the reception.
Intake for the exhibit will be: November 6th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Reception will be held: November 8th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Show extended through the first weekend of December (Christmas on the Creek Weekend)
Takedown: December 3rd from 10:00 am –2 pm
Ready, set, go. . . .
