GRADE 8 BELL RINGING
The new grade 8 Squires marked their entry into Northwood, with the traditional
Bell Ringing ceremony.

Annual Golf Day
The 2014 Golf day was a huge success and was well supported by Old
Boys, parents as well as the local community and school sponsors. Once
again there were fantastic prizes on offer and a wonderful
day was had by all.
Becoming a Knight
The process of training for
knighthood began before
adolescence, inside the
prospective knight’s home, where
he learned courtesy and manners.
Around the age of 6 to 7 years, he
would be sent away to train. For at
least seven years a page was
instructed in manners, courtesy,
cleanliness, and values. A page
became a squire when he turned
14 years of age (if he did well)
being assigned or picked by a
knight to become his personal
aide. The Knight acted as a tutor
and taught the squire all he
needed to know to become a
knight and uphold the Knight’s
Code of Chivalry, which
included generosity, courtesy,
compassion, and most
importantly, loyalty.
The Squire was made to vow that
he would obey the regulations of
chivalry and never flee from
battle. A squire could hope to
become a knight when he was
about 18 years old, once he had
established sufficient mastery of
the required skills and his training
was judged to be complete.
Knights then followed the code of
chivalry, which promoted honour,
honesty, respect and other
knightly virtues, for the rest of their

Reunion Dinner
2014 Reunion dinner saw
many Old boys return to
celebrate their anniversary
years.
The Guest speaker was
Warren Brosnihan, who took
us on a trip down memory
lane. We were entertained
well into the evening.
The tradition started last year
where the 1st Rugby and
Hockey teams attend the
dinner, was again carried out
- the Northwood boys sang
the Northwood call with great
pride.
The following years
celebrated .anniversaries:50th (1964), 40th (1974),
30th (1984), 25th (1989),
20th (1994),10th (2004) and
5th (2009).

Old Boy Day
The 2014 Old Boy Day, was a fantastic affair both on and off the field. On the
sidelines, the mini market, tea garden and various food stalls were a huge
success, while the musical talent showcased on the day was incredible and once
again highlighted the talent in the Durban North area.
On the field, both the 1st team hockey and rugby teams were superb in their
games against St Charles.
The 1st team hockey boys drew 1 -1, while the 1st team rugby team beat St
Charles 41 – 10 in an exhibition of running rugby.
This year’s recipients of the “Challenge Trophy” (the Old Boy
award for their man of the match) were:
Hockey - Gregory Wright
Rugby - Phiko Sobahle (who scored a hat-trick on the day)
The trophy was presented by Justin Downey (Old boy and
former Sharks rugby player), and Ross Cairns (Northwood
Head Prefect 2004).

Gangs of Ballet receiving award for Music ,Arts and Culture
Circle Of Valour Awards
The 2014 Northwood Knights, Circle of Valour awards took place at
Durban Country Club. This prestigious event profiles the success of the
Old Boys who have achieved recognition at the highest level in their
chosen profession. Award winners encompass the values taught during
his School days.
John Ellis (MC) for the evening, again entertained the appreciative
audience. The video footage of each recipient, displayed the quality of
the individuals as well as the quality of the boys coming through the
Northwood system.
The event was again well supported and saw many well know names
attending.

Northwood Rugby
2014 will forever be remembered as a milestone year for Northwood rugby.
Grant Bashford former Sharks Assistant Coach (and Old Boy), was
appointed as the Director of Rugby at Northwood, and 1st Team coach, and
his impact on the team was tangible. Lead by Bashy (Head of Rugby),
Eduard Coetzee (Scrum coach), Simon Vickers (Conditioning Coach) and
Johnathan Scruby (MC of Rugby) the Northwood Knights of 2014 were
inspirational.
Highlights included:

Significant victories over Hilton, Jeppe, Parktown,
St Charles, Port Natal and George Campbell.

Ngonidzashe Chidoma was selected to represent KZN at
Craven Week.

He was also selected for the South African Schools U18 Team at prop.
(He is the first Northwood boy to have made Craven Week and SA
Schools).

Kabelo Motloung and Kuziwakwashe Kazembe represented KZN at the
Academy Week.
x
David Weersma and Duncan Macdonald were selected for the U18
Dutch Rugby Team where David was also captain.
x
Both Ngonidzashe and Kabelo have been contracted to the Sharks
Rugby Union for 2015 (2 of only 12 U19 contracts offered).
x
David Weersma has been offered a place at the prestigious WP Rugby
Academy for 2015.

Burgerd Hamman (U14), Christopher Slater (U14), Stuart
Kotsouris (U15), Philup Jansen (captain) (U16) and
Shane Kennedy (U18). Both Philup Jansen (U16) and
Shane Kennedy’s (U18) teams beat the Blue Bulls in their
respective finals to win the tournament.
Old Boys Day 2015 will be a televised game on FNB
Classic Clashes. 2015 will no doubt be a rebuilding
year, but with such talent at the helm of Northwood
rugby, boys should look no further to advance their rugby
careers! Get behind Northwood rugby 2015.
Northwood Hockey
At a 1st team level the 2014 hockey season was somewhat of a rebuilding year
after the phenomenal performance of the 1st team in 2013. Nevertheless
hockey at Northwood is a real strength and the depth of talent is incredible. The
school boasts its own Olympic standard water-based Poligras astro turf, and
lead by current SA U21 hockey coach (and former SA player) Darryn Gallagher,
Northwood hockey continues to be a force to be reckoned with.
Highlights included:
20 Northwood hockey players were selected for the KZN coastal teams (across
3 age groups).
Greg Wright played in the U18A KZN Coastal hockey team who played in the
final of the U18 IPT.
Tyler Smith and Tristan Nobre were members of the U18C KZN Impi team who
won the IPT Hockey Tournament.
Tyrone Stanley, Ross Venning-Pridham and Ryan Whitehurst were part of the
U16C KZN Warriors Team who won the IPT Hockey Tournament in Polokwane.
Ryan Whitehurst was named goalkeeper of the tournament.
Taine Bird and Cameron Pretorius were members of the KZN U14A team who
won the Interprovincial tournament.
The Northwood U16A team won the U16 KZN Indoor League.

Northwood Swimming
Karen Thevenau, joined Northwood School’s Aquatics centre, and took
on the role of 1st team swimming coach, as well as running high
performance sessions with students. Many Northwood swimmers
excelled in 2014,and it began at the Northwood Championship Gala
where 2 long standing records were broken.
1. Trent Dungey, broke the 18 year old U15 50m Butterfly record set by
Andrew Carey in 1996.
2. Tevin du Toit broke the 9 year old Open 200m IM record set by Craig
Fowler in 2005

At a provincial level, Matthew Bedderson (50m and 100m Breaststroke),
Trent Dungey (50m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly)and
Juvahn Singh (50m and 100 butterfly and 200m Individual Medley) were
selected to represent KZN at the SA Swimming Championships.

Northwood Cricket
Other Sports
Northwood cricket teams did themselves proud in 2014, and the depth of
talent is again very exciting. Both the U4A and U15A cricket teams went
unbeaten in the 1st term. At the time of writing, the U15A team had finished the
BASEBALL
year placed 4th in South Africa (and were one of only 2 KZN teams in the top 10).
The 1st team also achieved success in the KZN T20 competition making it
through to the final, played at Kingsmead Cricket Ground. Although going
down to Westville, it was a superb season in this form of the game.
The following Cricketers were selected for KZN Cricket Teams:
U19 - Nazeer Jaffar - who has also made the CSA Regional U19 training
camp and will attend the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Cricket Week in
Pretoria.
U17 - Junaid Syed and Yetish Ramsurrup

and Brandon Smith were
selected to the SA U15
Baseball team that
participated in the IBAF
U15 Baseball World Cup
in Mexico.

We look forward to the continued dominance of Northwood Cricket in

Games. The team won
the southern
Hemisphere
Championships which
qualified them to
compete in the World
Games in France. Kyle
also travelled with the
South African team to
Zambia to compete in
Show Jumping,
Dressage and Eventing
against Zambia and
Zimbabwe, which the SA
Team won.
SCHOOL SPORTS
Northwood Cycling
In the first race of the Interschools Eliminator Series, Ethan
Biggar (U14) and Ben Carnie (U16) won silver, Cayde Muldoon
(U16) and Caldon Petit (U19) won gold.
In this year’s Amashova Cycle Race Cayde Muldoon came first
in his age group and was the overall winner of the Men’s 65km
race and he’s only 15. Caldon Petit came 2nd and Merrick
Stander came 4th in their respective age group in the 65 km
category while Ethan Biggar came 2nd in his age group in the
106 km race.
Northwood Soccer
Northwood soccer has continued to grow in strength
and popularity as a sport. Results and participation
across all age groups were excellent, and up to 27
teams played on any given weekend. We have no doubt
that soccer at Northwood will continue to be a success.
The following players were selected to represent KZN Soccer:
Siyanda Dlamini (U19A), Riccardo Papini (U19B), Renzo Arroe
(U19B) and Ntombeko Sibisi (U19B); Tyrique Bartlett (U15A),
Tyrone Stanley (U15A), Neesan Naidoo (U15A non travelling
reserve); Kyle Swain (U14A).
Northwood Athletics
Athletics is well supported by the boys and still sees
some good results being produced.

Northwood Water Polo
Northwood water polo welcomed a new coach at 1st team level in
2014; Haydn Skinner, from Grey PE. All teams produced some
great performances and again the results of some of the junior age
groups were very pleasing.
The U15A water polo team for example had followed up victories
over Hilton and Michaelhouse with a superb win over the previously
unbeaten Westville team in the 4th term.
At a provincial level, Ryan Symington was selected to represent the
KZN U18A team and Clayton Holland was selected as a reserve for
the KZN U18A team and as a full member of the KZN U18B team.

Northwood Surfing
Surfing at Northwood has always been a strength, and this
continued in 2014.
Highlights included:
Bevan Willis was selected to represent the SA U16 Team.
Northwood’s First Team won the KZN Schools Surfing League.
Bevan Willis won the U16 and U18 Division in the Durban July
Surfing Extravaganza.
Seth Foster was selected to represent the U15 Zululand
Regional Surfing Team.
Jamie Irvine (U15), Bevan Willis (U17) and Keagan Wallace
(U17) were selected to represent KZN Central Surfing at the
Hurley SA Championships held at Jeffrey’s Bay.
Bevan Willis, Keagan Wallace, Nathan Wallace, Matthew Sills
and Jamie Irvine all represented KZN Central in the Hurley SA
Junior Surfing Championships who won the Freedom cup by
accumulating the highest points (29 450) beating Eastern
Province.
SCHOOL MUSICAL
Cultural
Over the last 6 years and 6 shows, Director and Producer
Russell Scott (Old Boy, and Conductor of the Durban City
Orchestra & KZN Youth Wind Band) has put Northwood
Musicals on the map as a highlight of the Durban North
social calendar. The incredible standard of these shows has
grown each year, to the point where Northwood Musicals can
compare with most professional productions in KZN.
2013′s “Spotlight” and 2014′s “14″ were no different. A
professional team of vocal coaches, choreographers, sound &
lighting engineers and costume designers stretched,
challenged and polished a cast of over 60 singers, actors,
dancers and musicians into a fine ensemble capable of more
than even the kids thought possible! “14” included the
additional backing of a 30 piece orchestra Songs from all
genre’s and era’s showcased the talent that Northwood and
the numerous local girl schools has to offer.
Northwood is incredibly proud to be able to provide a
platform for this young talent to shine and will continue to do
so in the future!

NORTHWOOD ACADEMICS
Academics at Northwood remains a high priority and always will. The
school has continued to strive to offer the boys only the best in
educational standards, and 2014 saw Northwood move into the digital
space. Pupils at the school were among the first in the country to have
digital versions of their textbooks, as the school embraced iPads in the
classroom.
The 2013 Northwood Matric group worked diligently and consistently
throughout the year and were rewarded with a very strong set of
results.
Thirteen boys produced seven distinctions each, and over 90% of their
fellow Matrics qualified to
study at tertiary level going
forward.

Remembrance Day
The morning of November 11 (the 11th day of the 11th month)
Northwood honoured the fallen heroes who lost their lives
while serving their country. After the names of the Old Boys
were read out the flag was lowered as the Last Post was
played, and the boys and staff held a minute silence in
memory of their sacrifice. Forever Knights.

NORTHWOOD BOARDING ESTABLISHMENT
The Northwood BE underwent a true revitalization in 2014, and was lead by new
boarder master Llewellen Bragin, and his team. The establishment underwent
massive changes in both management and restructuring of the ‘value’ that the house
adds to the school. This is evident in the numbers of boys that has grown from 45 in
2013, to 64 in 2014 and will extend even further to an expected 71 boys
in 2015.
There are a host of exciting and refreshing new initiatives at the BE
which include:
The Bruyns Club: There will be a ‘100 club evening’ the last Friday of
every month in the Jubilee Room starting in February. The idea is simple
and will lead to a friendly evening for all as well as prizes and good
fundraising for the house.
The community service project, where boys support a local baby-home.
The TO Strand brotherhood weekend where the entire house travels to TO Strand for
the weekend and partake in leadership activities and a bonding experience.
Bruyns House
An intern duty master award offered to a matric of the year to stay on as a junior duty
master for the next year.
A Head Boy dorm, which is situated next to the Director of Boarding’s residence and
senior housemaster’s residence.
Holiday accommodation: The residence is now 75% full over all school holidays.
The BE boys have acquitted themselves with distinction in 2014, and the establishment
serves as a critical vehicle for drawing in the best talent from around the country, to
come to the school (look no further than Ngonzadshe Chidoma, David Weersma etc.).

The 25th of November marked the day that the 2014 Matrics
ended their five year journey at Northwood. Paul Brown from the
Knights encouraged to boys to dream big and uphold the
Northwood name. Well done boys!!

Friday 5th June 2015 is
Reunion Dinner.
Northwood Old Boy and internationally known family
therapist, Rod Smith, addressed the students in a
moving assembly. He had a profound impact on the
boys and had many asking for his contact information so
they could talk to him electronically. Thank you Rod.

Northlands Old Boy (and Dux in 1972), Howard
Lipshitz, visited Northwood. Howard is now a
Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular
Genetics at the University of Toronto and a Senior
Scientist in Stem Cell Biology at the Hospital for
Sick Children Research Institute. The Knights thank
him for his continued patronage of our school.

badge back to the Northwood.
Centurion Guild
The Knights have formed the Knights Centurion
Guild. Centurions were elite guardians in the
Romans military. The name has been chosen to
extend the symbolism of the Knights and for the
strong parallel with the objectives of the Centurions.
The membership of the Centurions is aimed at Old
Boys and supporters who are financially fortunate
and who can afford to make an annual donations to
a trust overseen by the Knights to supplement the
assistance provided to Northwood.

KNIGHTS IN THE NEWS
Gangs of Ballet
After an incredible 2013, Gangs of Ballet (featuring 3
Northwood Old Boys), kicked off the year with a massive
Valentine’s Day concert in Durban, with a 50 piece
orchestra (lead by fellow Old Boy Russell Scott). They then
made Durban and the rest of South Africa proud when they
walked away with the MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA) for
best ‘Alternative’ act, and were even nominated as a
‘wildcard’ act for the 2014 MTV EMA awards in Glasgow
for Best African Act.

‘Twiggy’ as he is known, won the Mavericks Invitational big
wave surfing competition for 2014. The South African big
wave surfer pulled a 10-point ride to steal the Mavericks
Invitational 2013/2014 final from the hands of Ryan
Augenstein, Tyler Fox, Greg Long, and Anthony Tashnick.

Congratulations to Northwood Crusaders Cricket team on
winning not only the KZN Cricket Premier League for the
5th year in a row, but also winning the KZN Premier
Twenty20 Competition!

In Feb 2013, the Knights launched an official ‘Northwood Old Boys’ Facebook page, for Old Boys
of Northwood, Northlands and Beachwood. The page, which now boasts 1180 followers, has
proved to be a great success, and to date has reached Old Boys in over 42 different counties
around the world!
