PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents:
The Parent/Teacher Conferences were rescheduled to
Thursday, December 2nd due to inclement weather and
the closure of school on November 23rd. This provides a
great opportunity to partner together to provide a positive and productive middle school experience.
As we are now in the holiday season, things are going to
get busy (OK… busier) for everyone. Things that may
be helpful in dealing with young adolescents include:
trying to stay with a routine or schedule, getting enough
sleep, prioritizing what‘s important, learning to say no,
keeping things in perspective, maintaining a sense of
humor and patience, and building in some down-time.
The work continues in the classrooms as teachers are
planning and implementing engaging lessons. We are
looking forward to outstanding music concerts in December. We are also gearing up for the Geography Bee
Currently the Kent Food Bank is taking registrations for
Christmas. Christmas Basket deadline is December 15th.
Christmas Food Baskets - December 20th from 9:00 am 12:00 or 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Toys for children 12 and under will be distributed on December 22nd from 9:00-2:00

MOHAN SKI SCHOOL

You may be looking outside and wondering where summer
went, but for those of us who are snow junkies, all we‘re
thinking about is early snow in the mountains with all this
rain.
The Mohan Ski School is back once again and offering students at Northwood a chance to be a part of their program.
Whether you‘ve ridden for years or are simply interested in
trying something new, we‘d like to invite all students to sign
up and be a part of ski bus this season.
Mohan offers lessons, gear rentals, and bus trips, all for different prices. Already got your gear and know how to ride?
How about just signing up for the bus then. Have the gear,
but need to know how to use it? You can sign up for lessons
too.
Please remember that December 15th is the deadline to sign
up for this year‘s Mohan Ski Program. There will be no registration allowed after that date. Head to
www.skimohan.com to register or call Mr. Simpson with
questions at 253-373-6675.

Parents – looking for that perfect Christmas gift that
will keep on giving long after the holidays are over?
Look no further! Purchase a Yearbook for your child
– a Yearbook is the only permanent record of the
school year and kids love to have friends sign it so
they can reminisce for many years to come. Yearbooks must be purchased by Dec. 14 to guarantee
your child will get one. You can then create a coupon to give your child letting him/her know there
will be a Yearbook waiting for him/her in June!
Yearbooks cost $17 with an ASB card, or $21 without. You can send a check to school with your child
or to keep it a surprise, go to the NW website and
click on ‗On-line school fee/pay link‘ in the left hand
column. After you‘ve logged in, click on ‗Annual‘ to
complete your purchase. Questions about purchasing
a Yearbook can be answered by our ASB Cashier,
Bobbie Schnoebelen at 373-6634.

ONE ACT FESTIVAL
1st Wednesday of the month
If you saw Follies last year at Northwood then you already
know that we challenge ―standard‖ drama performances, and
Northwood‘s First Annual One Act Festival is no different.
6:45 pm – 8:00 pm
The One Act Festival is a collection of three humorous short
plays performed and run entirely by Northwood students. To
top it off, pairs of Kentridge Drama Students have taken on
the title of ―director‖ and are running the entire show. Yup,
you read right, a student run play directed by students.
The one acts, ―Drugs Are Bad,‖ ―Dinner with the Macguffins,‖ and ―Hard Candy‖ all throw the main characters into
strange and hilarious situations that will keep the audience
laughing and wondering just where the actors will take it
next. You won‘t want to miss out on this performance.
Shows will take place on both Thursday, December 9 th and
Friday, December 10th starting at 7pm with doors opening at
6:30pm. You can buy your tickets at the door for $5, but we
would recommend purchasing at the ASB window in advance, as like Follies last year…tickets will sell out.

for supporting Northwood‘s drama efforts, as well as all of
our KR directors. This production couldn‘t go on without

BOOK FAIR is here! Think about Holiday Gifts
and lots of books to cozy up with this winter for you
and your students. PTSA will have the Fair in the
Northwood Library from Nov. 22 – Dec 3. Parents
work the Fair before school, during lunch and during
all conferences. Stop by and see the great selection
of books and gifts.
Our last Internet Parent Safety nights and is this
Thursday, December 2nd at 6 pm. If you still have
questions, Northwood responses to parents’ frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) are on the NW
website’s main page.
Battle of the Books team members are continuing
to read the 23 books for the competition this year.
We will meet once more before Winter Break.
Student after-school video club has their first
meeting this month! We will start with library and
technology orientations for our new students! If you

7th grader Travis Raines wants to belong to the secret
society at Lauer Middle School. He isn‘t the coolest kid
and problems at school certainly seem to find him often
enough. But one day he finds a magical blue envelope
in his locker and it seems he will be following his destiny into the group. But wait, while some blue envelop
challenges seem like puzzles to be solved, others seem
to be on the edge of trouble. What is really happening?
Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs
Fun, quick read about a teenage romance with a twist.
Lily Sanderson is a normal high school girl on land, a
mermaid princess while in the water. Her love interest
is Brody Bennett, a Varsity swim team member, who
doesn‘t seem too interested, but would make a wonderful prince in the undersea world of Thalassinia. The
complication is next door biker-dude Quincy Fletcher,
who always seems to be there for Lily‘s most embarrassing moments. When Lily accidentally kissed
Quincy in a dark room instead of the expected Brody,
the ‗bonding‘ for life begins. Lily must take Quincy to her underground
kingdom and her father alone can break the bond and free Lily to return
to pursue Brody. A jealous cousin and a stubborn father make Lily‘s
task harder than she would like. The end includes a lesson that all teenage girls would be wise to consider, seeing a boy for who he really is
and how he really treats you.

Thank you to everyone who sold cookie dough
bought cookie dough or helped with order collection and delivery. The Music Department
raised around $8000. This money will help fund
many extras for the Music Department, including uniform replacement, field trip support, competitions, equipment, accompanist, etc... Mrs.
Jones' 2nd period Choir won the class prize.
The 1st and 2nd place individual winners were
