The Sacramentary, contains the prayers said by the priest and the instructions on how to celebrate a Mass. We priests do not, and should not, make up our own rules for celebrating Mass. The Church wants us to follow liturgical rules so you know what you’re getting into at Mass. There are two parts of every Mass, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Liturgy of the Eucharistic begins after the General Intercessions. This following paragraph tells us about the Preparation of the Gifts. This is often called the offertory. Actually, the offertory comes later. Here is what the Sacramentary tells: At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist the gifts which will become Christ’s Body and Blood are brought to the altar. First of all, the altar or Lord’s table, which is the center of the whole Liturgy of the Eucharist, is made ready when on it are placed the corporal, purificator, Missal, and chalice (unless this last is prepared at the credence table). The offerings are then brought forward. It is a praiseworthy practice for the bread and wine to be presented by the faithful. They are then accepted at an appropriate place by the Priest or the Deacon to be carried to the altar. Even though the faithful no longer bring from their own possessions the bread and wine intended for the liturgy as was once the case, nevertheless the rite of carrying up the offerings still keeps its spiritual efficacy and significance. Even money or other gifts for the poor or for the Church, brought by the faithful or collected in the church, are acceptable; given their purpose, they are to be put in a suitable place away from the Eucharistic table. These gifts [offerings] are placed either on the altar [the bread and wine] or near it to be offered to God. What you put in the basket is a sign of your love for God especially the gratitude we owe God for his blessings given every day. After the words of consecration and the mystery of faith we actually offer to God the Victim, Jesus, back to God our Father. We read in the Sacramentary: — The oblation, by which, in this very memorial, the Church, in particular that gathered here and now, offers the unblemished sacrificial Victim in the Holy Spirit to the Father. The Church’s intention, indeed, is that the faithful not only offer this unblemished sacrificial Victim but also learn to offer their very selves, and so day by day to be brought, through the mediation of Christ, into unity with God and with each other, so that God may at last be all in all. Our gifts given in the collection are caught up with the bread and the wine which have become the real presence of Jesus and raised to God the Father Almighty. We offer ourselves with the symbolic gift of ourselves in the money, faith, heart-felt sorrow for our sins, joy, etc. Our Father accepts our sacrifice and hands back his very Son for our salvation. Every Mass is a great exchange of gifts from you to God and from God to you and me. It behooves us to come to Mass with a strong intentionality to worship God. We must always strive to place our inner self in the service of worship. EVERY Mass is beautiful! EVERY Mass is a miracle! EVERY Mass is an earthly experience of the celestial wedding banquet with Jesus and his Church! Every Mass is an opportunity for us to love God and allow God to love us with the greatest act of love history has ever known — Jesus the bridegroom dying on the cross for his bride the Church. As the pure victim, Jesus embraces you and me in his terrible passion and lifts us to the heart of God in heaven. He opens his eyes and says to our Father — Here they are, your people, I have won them back from the grip of Satan himself, through me; they are my gift to you. Accept them. Our heavenly Father does not refuse his only begotten Son’s request. We are most blessed. Pax et bonum, Msgr. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Christians, perhaps because, at least in Orthodox practice, weekdays are not proper days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a prelude. On “Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later, “Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially called “Sunday of Forgiveness.” the church gathers for “Forgiveness Vespers.” The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness. The desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliation in the family and with one’s neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season. How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some traditions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasting is not permitted on the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine and oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunication falls during Great Lent, then fish may be served. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. St. Jude League Enrollment St. Jude League is opened for enrollment throughout the year. Membership for enrollment is $5.00 for the year. The 6:45 A.M. Mass each Tuesday is celebrated for intentions of those enrolled in the League. St. Jude is a powerful intercessor for anyone in need. Membership Cards are available by the St. Jude Shrine in our church. “I AM” Kindness and mercy are what the enslaved people of Israel needed, and they came in the form of deliverance. They came through a leader, Moses, who was once plucked from the Nile River and was now herding his father-in-law’s sheep in the land of Goshen. The bush that burned but was not consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery. Moses’ awe and deference are mixed with a touching conversational tone as he seeks to learn God’s name. And God sweetly responds. The somewhat abstract “I AM” distinguishes the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob from the minor gods in the territory who “are not.” They are helpless, powerless, and useless. Moses is to step out into an amazing future, and God will be there with outstretched arm. Just go and see, God seems to say. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
