Contact chamber staff at 684-5479 BLM Implements “Fire Prevention Restrictions” for Phoenix Area Public Lands The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) implements on May 18th fire prevention restrictions that greatly reduce the risk of fire on public lands north and south of Phoenix, Arizona. With temperatures well above average, the vegetation is exceedingly dry and the risk of wildland fire is at the Very High and Extreme level. People who enjoy public lands north and south of Phoenix can reduce the risk of fire by practicing safety and strictly adhering to these “fire prevention restrictions and safety tips:” 1. Do not build or use a fire, campfire, charcoal broiler or wood stove. Use of propane and petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns or heating devices is currently allowed. 2. No smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building. 3. No discharging a firearm (no target shooting or other shooting) outside of taking game in accordance with Arizona hunting laws in hunting season. 4. Be aware that driving off-road over dry grass could ignite a fire; be sure that all vehicles and tires are in excellent working order; chains or other recreational equipment must not drag or dangle from the truck or trailer to the ground; secure all recreational equipment; it’s always a good idea to carry a fire extinguisher. Fire prevention restrictions are in effect until further notice for all public lands administrated by the BLM Phoenix District – including popular areas such as the Agua Fria National Monument, the Table Mesa Recreation or Boulders Staging Camp Ground north of Phoenix, the Back Country Byways west of Phoenix, the Sonoran Desert National Monument, Saddle Mountain recreation area, and the Painted Rock Petroglyph site, southwest of Phoenix, and all wilderness areas. Violation of these Fire Prevention Restrictions is punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000, or imprisonment of not more than 12 months, or both. (43 CFR 9212.4). Fire restrictions for public lands may vary in other parts of the state, depending on the level of fire danger and may be accessed at: www. azfireinfo.com or for information on fire prevention tips and restrictions in your area, contact your local BLM office, or visit BLM’s website at www.az.blm.gov. July 2012 Chamber of Commerce Hassayampa Alert Information from Wickenburg Police Department: Chief Pete Wingert Valley Trends • Liquor “boosting”, where armloads of liquor bottles are taken quickly continue to be popular among thieves in the Valley. Please advise those proprietors that sell liquor to place it in locked glass cabinets to prevent this type of theft. Also consider video on beer aisles to deter “walk outs”. • Return fraud is also popular in the Valley. Please have retailers review their policies on returns without receipts, as this seems to be a loophole exploited by thieves. Specifically, phony Sony PlayStation 3 controllers are being returned without receipts. The only place in Wickenburg that might sell these controllers might sell this type of product would be Alco, whom I will speak with personally. • “Push outs” of large electronic equipment (televisions) also seem to be a growing trend. Carts are loaded with large electronics and pushed out the door without an attempt at payment. (Again, Alco is the only place in Wickenburg that could be targeted.) • A gift card scam is popular right now too. The Scam: Suspect presents a Gift Card to be loaded (or reloaded), to the cashier; usually in the amount of $500. The cashier then activates the card, while suspect stalls for time; presenting Debit Card with Insufficient funds. In the meantime, suspect is on his cell phone placing an Internet Order on the Card, thereby locking the funds on the card. When the debit card declines the order, the card is returned to suspect, however the funds are already locked in. Once the funds are locked in, the transaction cannot be voided by the cashier. The funds on the card are then transferred to another Gift card. Retailers in Wickenburg can join a mailing list at AZORCA, the Arizona Organized Retail Crime Association at www.azorca.org for quick access to this type of information. Wickenburg Trends • Several Wickenburg businesses were victims of preloaded credit card fraud/theft, where a suspect presents a card/card number and the proprietor charges the card. The suspect then disputes the card at a later date. The businesses receive “charge backs”. This type of incident happened at several businesses during Gold Rush Days. Many received charge back within the last three weeks. • Return scams are also popular here. Return of merchandise without a receipt is a courtesy that many businesses here run. However, there is plenty of room for scams when no receipt is presented. Please review policies in relation to returns without receipts. • Concealment theft is also prevalent here. I know that this is a training and manpower issue. Please review with employees signs to look for in concealment theft. For more information contact: WPD at (928) 684-5411 Email: [email protected] Page 7 Arts & Culture Task Force Two months ago the Chamber Arts & Culture Task Force was formed, bringing together all of the local non-profit organizations in this sector. The task force came together from our Mini-Town Hall on the subject during last fall’s Wickenburg Leadership Institute. Arts and Culture organizations are resilient and entrepreneurial businesses. They employ people locally, purchase goods and services from within the community, and market and promote their programs, events & activities. As the economy rebounds, the arts are well poised for growth. Wickenburg already produces new and exciting work – performances and exhibitions and festivals that entertain, inspire, and increasingly draw audiences. Statistics show that arts and culture organizations leverage additional event-related spending by their audiences that pumps revenue into the local economy. Based on surveys, the typical arts attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission. Last month the task force met with artist/ newspaper editor Tamara Thomas to discuss featuring local arts and culture organizations in The Wickenburg Sun this summer. Additionally, program information is being gathered for 2012-13 and added to our website calendars. CHECK OUT THE COMMUNITY CALENDAR ON THE CHAMBER’S WEBSITE AT WWW.WICKENBURGCHAMBER.COM OR WWW.OUTWICKENBURGWAY.COM Page 8 Chamber of Commerce Hassayampa Alert News You Can Use: 2012 Chairman’s Circle Members to Date As you know, the Supreme Court announced its decision regarding SB 1070. The ruling does not change what documents people use to travel to or throughout Arizona. Our state is no different than any other state that requires some form of valid identification when traveling. However, the Arizona Office of Tourism saw this as an important opportunity to help clarify any concerns Arizona travelers may have about travel documents. Below please see a brief outline what has been upheld by the Court: Arizona police officers can make a reasonable attempt to determine the immigration status of a person stopped, detained or arrested if there’s reasonable suspicion that a person is in the U.S. illegally. According to Governor Jan Brewer, “The case for SB 1070 has always been about our support for the rule of law. That means every law, including those against both illegal immigration and racial profiling. Law enforcement will be held accountable should this statute be misused in a fashion that violates an individual’s civil rights.” We are doing what we can to minimize travelers’ confusion and taking steps to inform them that questions regarding citizenship will only be asked as a result of any violation of Arizona state law. Having stated that, AOT understands many travelers want to know what is concerned to be “acceptable” forms of identification for proof of citizenship. Below is a list of acceptable identification as it pertains to travel. Acceptable: • U.S. Passport • Military DD-214 • Military Dependent Identification Card • Visa • Green Card • Birth Certificate • Any U.S. State or Government Identification Card (i.e. Driver’s License) • Tribal Identification Card There are states that do not use a Driver’s License as proof of citizenship: New Mexico, Illinois and Utah. The state of Washington accepts an enhanced form of Driver’s License as proof. Travelers should check with their state’s MVD office to determine if their state’s Driver’s License is proof of citizenship. Obtain the PublicEach Property Report equivalent required by Federal and expeState law and read it before signing anything. Additionally, the ruling does not change how we promote Arizona. year,or itsmillions of visitors rience Arizona as a vibrant and diverse travel destination. The Grand Canyon State is one of the most welcoming and states in the nation with exciting outdoor adventures, fun-family activities, captivating arts & culture, rejuvenating resorts and spas, exquisite local cuisines, and a variety of shopping opportunities. As one of the most unique destinations in the world, Arizona is not a place to just visit; it’s a place to experience. This is the message we will continue to tout across the globe.
