Larry Pridemore Mary Thomas Don Turno Louisiana Wright Our employees make our credit union what we are. They strive diligently to provide you a high level of quality service in a caring manner. Without them, we would be just another financial institution. 2008 was a very challenging year. Our credit union remains financially sound and strong. The sub-prime mortgages caused a ripple effect to our economy. Consumer confidence fell and people reduced their spending all of which led to an economic downturn. Many people saw reduced earnings through loss of overtime, reduced work hours and for some, the loss of a job. This has affected the delinquency at our credit union as people are not able to pay for their cars, boats, or in a few cases their homes. 137220_09AnnualReport:Layout 1 3/2/09 12:30 PM Page 3 Our delinquency still remains about 60% of the national average for credit unions. I think this reflects on the quality of our members. Let me add that our credit union did not and will not make the sub-prime mortgages that are causing the current problem. Some of the milestones for 2008 were: • We began construction of our new Administrative Campus and full service branch on US 25 and Walnut Lane in April. The steel is up and you can visualize the new facility. We expect to occupy this facility by the end of 2009. This facility will replace our current offices in the BTC building. • We completed remodeling the interior of our North Augusta branch in October. This branch now offers our members the same privacy as all our other branches. As you may recall, this was our first new branch and was opened in December of 1990. We appreciated your understanding during this remodeling period. • The conversion to our new computer operating system was completed as scheduled in early November. We also appreciated your understanding during this conversion. • We introduced deposit taking ATMs at our Burnettown and Richland branches. These ATMs accept deposits of checks and of currency. Our plans are to install 8 more at key branches. Your use of these machines reinforces our belief that this is a good use of credit union funds. We also have three additional service improvements that are coming in 2009: • We continue working with the City of Allendale on a location for our new branch. This branch will be located adjacent to the current drive thru ATM. We plan to have the branch operational by mid 2009. • We have outgrown our Martinez branch which opened in February of 2002 and have purchased land on Davis Road around the corner from the existing branch. We plan to begin construction of a full service branch the second quarter of 2009. • We also plan to add a drive thru facility to our Edgefield branch the second quarter of 2009. This facility was designed so we could easily add the drive thru addition. In closing, your Board of Directors remains dedicated to serving our member owners. “Good Things Happen at SRP” remains the objective of your Board of Directors. 137220_09AnnualReport:Layout 1 3/2/09 12:30 PM Page 4 PRE S IDE NT’S REPORT Ed Templeton President Faith Ann Borst Vice President West Division Branches Dick Coleman Vice President Lending Ed Presnell Vice President Administrative Services Jean Roper Vice President Member Business Services Clifford Rushton Vice President Information Technology Woody Shuler Vice President Finance Steve Wilson Vice President East Division Branches The only thing certain in life is change. Have you ever done the experiment where you cross your arms and then you are told to reverse your arms and cross in the other direction? If you do this, it really does feel odd. Why is change so uncomfortable? Change is so inevitable in our lives that one would think we would get used to it and even embrace it. 2008 was a year of change for your credit union. But the real change in 2008 didn’t happen inside SRP Federal Credit Union. It happened in the free market place of the world. Economic down turn, subprime lending, mortgage meltdown and Wall Street abuse reoccurred as daily headlines. This year of change culminated with a complete and total shift of power in Washington, DC. Your credit union’s financial performance in light of all these changes was positive. We ended the year just as strong, just as dynamic, and just as committed to the future as we were when we began the year. SRP FCU’s most notable change was the data processing conversion on October 31. This completely replaced all processing systems within the credit union. It changed everything that we did and affected every member’s account. The conversion was successful. No one’s money was lost, no one’s account numbers were lost, plastic cards worked before and after the conversion, and we opened on schedule. Was our service level interrupted? Absolutely! For at least a week after the conversion, the switchboard was jammed, there were lines in the branches waiting for member service, and we were fielding questions continuously. Most of this was a result of people being unable to access their accounts through the home banking product. One-third of the home banking users required some type of staff intervention to access their account. This was accomplished within the five days following the conversion. The changes were positive: quicker teller line access, quicker and more efficient member service both in person and on the telephone, quicker statement processing, and the ability to add new functions and services in the future. The most notable change is providing cross-member access through home banking. Another big change was real time deposit capability at ATMs, something we had long promised and had been unable to deliver. It finally happened in November 2008 when we rolled out the first two machines. Others will follow in 2009 as we methodically work our way through the branch network. SRP Federal Credit Union worked through these events. We succeeded because of our most important asset, you the member. We value you and are here to serve your needs, and as long as we focus on these two things, we will remain strong, we will remain vibrant, and we will have a bright future. We are ready for the changes of 2009. The letters in the word “TEAM” are often equated to the phrase “Together Everyone Achieves More” – a good paraphrase for the credit union mantra of “People Helping People.” 137220_09AnnualReport:Layout 1 3/2/09 12:30 PM Page 5 S UPE RV IS ORY COMMITTEE REPORT Terry Meeks Edie Corley-Stone Mark Utley The Supervisory Committee represents the credit union membership. Its mission is to ensure that the credit union’s operations conform to the Federal Credit Union Act and the rules and regulations of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The Committee’s responsibilities include ensuring all audits, account verifications, and acceptable business and accounting practices are followed. The Committee responds to all member complaints forwarded through the NCUA. Orth, Chakler, Murnane, and Co., was hired again this past year as our external auditors. Their latest findings dated August 8, 2008, for the year ended March 31, 2008, reported no areas of concern with financial reports or internal controls. Chairman This year’s NCUA examination was performed on April 4, 2008 for the period ended December 31, 2007. From their review of the financial statements, federal regulations and internal controls, the NCUA found no material problems in any areas of the credit union. The Supervisory Committee would like to thank the employees of SRP FCU for their dedication and hard work during the data processing conversion. I’m sure they felt like they put their lives on hold while they trained for the new enhanced data system. This new system will enable SRP FCU to continue to run in a safe and sound manner. As noted above, the Supervisory Committee is pleased again this year that the external auditors and the federal regulators have given SRP FCU a clean bill of health. SRP Federal Credit Union is a safe, sound financial institution and will continue to run that way in the future. C RE DIT C OM MITTEE REPORT Lonnie Gordon Chairman Melinda Brinkley David Chostner Lauretta Gordon J.K. Lepp Your Credit Committee reviewed 4,382 loan applications in 2008, which was an increase of 641 applications (+17%) compared with 2007. Our loan volume is heavily dependent on car and home sales so it is understandable that loan demand might be lessened given the negative economic news from both the automotive and real estate industries. Although our consumer and mortgage loan volume was down slightly from 2007, we still had a very good year with combined loan volume of $150,460,779 which led to a healthy gain in loan outstandings of $17,468,348 or a growth in our loan portfolio of 5.43%. During 2008, we were very aggressive in the Mortgage Department, in our Recovery Department and in the branches trying to offer solutions to our members who were struggling to make their loan payments. We offered the “Sweet Dreams” deferment program during the summer and have been trying to proactively help our members head off problems before they develop into real financial difficulty. Unlike some other lenders, we have not tightened our lending criteria since it is our mission to help our members finance their dreams. It’s as easy for our members to get a loan at SRP Federal Credit Union today as it was 1, 5, or 25 years ago. 137220_09AnnualReport:Layout 1 3/2/09 12:30 PM Page 6 The following financial statements present the financial position of SRP Federal Credit Union as of December 31, 2008 and 2007 respectively, and the results of operations for the years then ended.
