It has been an honor and privilege representing Tiffany Club and what it stands for. I have made many contacts and many friends along the way and will continue to be active in the transgender community when my term expires. I believe in my heart that there will always be a place for the Tiffany Club in the transgender community. In the past years I have met many people who are just beginning their journey. They chose Tiffany Club because we offer a safe and comfortable environment that allows members to grow and thrive at their own pace The two groups that we offer free of charge: The TG discussion group led by Brenda Thompson and You’re Not Alone have helped many people including myself, to find their way and understand themselves better. Our theme this year is “One Community”. We who are transgendered should embrace this theme because I truly believe it describes who we are. It is you and me! No matter where we are on our journey or where we will ultimately end up we are all under the transgender umbrella. This is our strength. At this year’s First event we are going to have a Decades Dance where there will be music for everyone from the 1920’s to today’s sounds. I am thrilled to be chosen as the hostess for this event. There will be some great prizes for those dancers who participate in the decade of their choosing. So get your dancing shoes ready for Thursday night. Dance to the music you love! John Warrener of Glamour Boutique is in charge of this year’s fashion show, which will be MC’d by Dame Edna portrayed by Michael Walters. It promises to be one of the best shows ever. The Tiffany Club is honored to have Jamison Green with us as our keynote speaker for First Event 2011. His work on behalf of the transgender community has been so important to so many people and his experience is so broad. We know our attendees will be encouraged and empowered by his talk. There will be an abundance of workshops each day for everyone in the transgender community. I am sure you will find one that interests you! On Saturday we again will have workshops for the men, FtoMs, throughout the day. There will also be a luncheon for the guys. Last year, I enjoyed speaking with them and gaining a greater understanding of their experiences. For those who do not want to attend the workshops or shop in the vendor area, they can go to one of the many shopping centers that are located near the hotel, go to a restaurant, take in a movie, or visit one of the many nightclubs in Boston. Also this year, the Consignment shop, which has been so successful the last two years, will be open Wednesday through Saturday. If you need clothes, shoes, or any types of accessories, you will be amazed at all the wonderful merchandise you’ll find at better than bargain prices. The registration area this year will be in the Vendor area and arrangements will be made with the hotel for those persons who arrive after registration closes to pick up their tickets. Greg, our DJ, will be entertaining us every night in the lounge with all of the latest dance music. He’s one of the best! I myself can’t wait to see old friends again and to make new ones. For me, this is the best part of First Event. If you have just begun your transgender Journey, I can’t think of a better place to come. It is a wonderful experience. I look forward to saying hello to all of you at this year’s First Event . Please come by and see me. Until then, take care and God Bless you, Paula Howard Chairwoman of the Tiffany Club of New England First Event 2011 Tiffany Club of New England 5 6 Tiffany Club of New England First Event 2011 Proudly, we present our Keynote Speaker Jamison Green Jamison Green is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished contributors to the contemporary transgender movement for health, civil rights, social safety, dignity and respect for gender-variant people. He is a writer and educator, born (1948) and raised in Oakland, California. He holds both a BA and MFA in English from the University of Oregon. He is currently enrolled at Manchester Metropolitan University in England, where he is completing his doctoral dissertation on the law impacting transsexualism. In 1994, he authored the landmark document “Report on Discrimination Against Transgendered People” for the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, which served as the foundation for the establishment of protective legislation in the City and County of San Francisco, and specified much of the agenda for the contemporary transgender movement. He developed the curriculum on transgender sensitivity training that has been used since 1995 at the San Francisco Police Academy, and which has been adapted for use in other cities. The Advocate magazine named him one of “our best and brightest activists” (1999); he was the first transsexual man so named. Jamison is in demand as a speaker around the world. He is a popular guest lecturer at many colleges and universities, and at professional meetings in such disciplines as law, psychology, medicine, theology, and corporate/business management. He has keynoted numerous conferences and events around the country, including San Francisco Pride, San Diego Pride, and Portland (OR) Pride, and symposia such as “Sex Change at Stanford,” Stanford University (2000) and the TransFabulous Festival of the Arts in London. He has appeared in a dozen educational films, including the award-winning “You Don’t Know Dick.” He has appeared in person and on radio and television to educate about transsexualism in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Serbia, Israel, Turkey, Columbia, Australia, Taiwan, and Japan. He has also worked with mental health professionals to develop training programs for continuing professional education seminars offered through JFK University and professional groups. His writing has appeared regularly in his featured column on PlanetOut.com and in such anthologies as The Transgender Studies Reader (edited by Stryker and Whittle, Routledge, NY, 2006) and Unseen Genders: beyond the binaries (edited by Haynes and McKenna, Peter Lang Publishing, NY, 2001). His own book, Becoming a Visible Man (Vanderbilt University Press, 2004) won the Silvia Rivera Prize for Best Book in Transgender Studies (2004) and was a 2004 Lambda Literary Award Finalist. He began his transition from female to male in 1988 while employed as an engineering group manager at Sun Microsystems, Inc. He led FTM International, Inc. from March 1991 until August 1999, and he presently serves on the board of directors of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and several other nonprofit educational organizations. Since 1995, he has received awards of distinction from all of the largest, established transgender organizations in the U.S., and was the first transman to receive the Distinguished Service Award (May 2009) from the Association of Gay & Lesbian Psychiatrists for his contributions to LGBT mental health, and the first transman to receive the Transgender Advocate award from the National LGBT Bar Association (August 2009) for his contributions to legislative advocacy and litigation strategy on behalf of trans people worldwide. In 2009, he also received the Vanguard Award from the Transgender Law Center in San Francisco “for leading when no one else did”. First Event 2011 Tiffany Club of New England 7 A Touch of Grace Grace Anne Stevens Your Next Step I have found a new guide book for my life, that I would like to share with each of you. It is by Mark Nepo and is titled The Book of Awakening: Having the Life you Want by Being Present to the Life you Have . It is one of those books that is has a short 1 page reading for each day of the year. Each day I am moved and sometimes shaken by the wisdom that is presented. As I write this I am reflecting on the reading called Hospitality. He says, “ Often the purpose of love is for others to guide us, without expectation or interference, as far as they can go, so that we might begin.” Oh my! This has so much resonance for me at so many levels. As a parent, as a friend, as a person who is on a transgender journey, this is a wonderful addition to the meanings of “love.” Here, at First Event 2011, we our expressing our love to each of you. In a sense, we are acting as guides, and bringing you to the edge of the water. We are providing the workshops, the parties, and the venue to meet old friends and make new ones. It is a place that provides the opportunities to both learn and play as much as you choose. This year our theme is One Community. No matter where you are under the TG umbrella, or where you are on your own individual journey, we have worked to provide something that can fill your thirst, if you are willing to take the next step. As. Mark Nepo says, this step is for you and you alone to take. We are there to encourage and support you in this, but the next step is truly yours! Take a deep breath, and step forward. Feel free to fill your thirst as much as you can. “Go as far as you can go” hope you enjoy First Event 2011. My wish for you is that you know you are loved and have the strength to take your next step here at First Event 2011. Grace Stevens, Vice Chair, TCNE & Co-chair FE11 (January 2011) WELCOME TO FIRST EVENT 2011 THE PREMIER EVENT OF IT’S KIND IN THE COUNTRY! I 8 Tiffany Club of New England First Event 2011 A Note From Anderson Clark Co-Chair of FE11 & Transmasculine Program Coordinator The proverbial dust hadn’t even settled from last year’s conference when we were already beginning the planning process for First Event 2011. Our first order of business was to choose the theme for this year, which turned out to be a relatively easy task. We had been inspired by the words of Dr. Jillian Weiss, the 2010 keynote speaker, whose message was that we must come together as a community for respect and for our rights. It was her message that lead to our 2011 theme: One Community With our theme in place, we then proceeded to form the organizing committee, but first needed to find someone to chair it. We all knew our limitations – none of us could manage this task alone, as we were all dealing with different things in our lives that required our attention. We came to the conclusion that we could manage the responsibility of chairing the First Event 2011 organizing committee if we worked together. So we formed a team which is comprised of a trans woman, a crossdresser, her non-trans wife and myself, a trans man. I find it fitting that our little team is a microcosm of the wider transgender community, and like the larger community, we have our disagreements and our different ways of looking at things. Rather than let these differences drive us apart, however, we came together, pooling our unique perspectives, experiences and points of view so that, along with the our talented, hardworking colleagues on the organizing committee, we could bring to you a First Event that we hope will inspire you, support you, rejuvenate you, and provide you with fun and fond memories that will last for years to come. In that spirit, I invite you to consider this: When you are in the workshops, participating in one of the evening events or enjoying a meal, take a look around you, at the people on either side of you, and think about the ways over which we can come together. Are our struggles so different? Do we not share some similarities in our histories and our paths? And if you have never met anyone in some of the other sub-groups of our community, here’s your chance. Genderqueer people, trans youths, parents, spouses and partners, crossdressers, trans men and women and other identities – they will all be here at First Event. My guess is that if you meet and talk to these folks, you’ll find common ground to share as well as differences to learn from. You can even use the workshops at this conference to discover things you never knew about your neighbors under the transgender umbrella. Lastly, we can all likely find a take-home message from this year’s keynote speaker, Jamison Green, who will bring our conference theme full-circle when he discusses “One Community, Many Faces.” With that in mind, I welcome you, my siblings within our amazing One Community, to First Event 2011. I am very glad that you are here. First to the beautiful female spirit within the ladies of the runway. As each lady steps onto the runway, they share that inner spirit with you. Please show your support for them with encouraging applause. The success of this show is also due to the talents and efforts of many individuals. First, of course, are the lovely ladies and wonderful men who participate by walking the runway. What you see could not be done, however, without the backstage support of the makeover and hair specialists as well as the vendors who provide the outfits being worn. These individuals are gems in the T Community because they are there for us. We honestly have some of the finest and most talented T support people in the world in this area. Please show your appreciation by thanking them and patronizing them whenever possible. The FE committee has worked diligently to make tonight's show as successful as possible. Kudos on their efforts to allowing the Fashion Show and all of the other wonderful events of First Event to happen. This year's Fashion Show also features one of the most talented performers anywhere--Michael L. Walters. Michael's impressions of Dame Edna are amazing. His ability to entertain an audience is incredible. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to this astounding entertainer. For many of you looking for something to do on Sunday afternoon, Michael will be presenting a full show at the Arlington Regent Theatre in Arlington. His "A Royal Audience" as Dame Edna has received many rave reviews and he would be happy to see you in the audience. Thank you for attending this year's Fashion Show and ENJOY!!!” Partners in Process Program Andrea Ziff, Spouse A couple of points about PiP. PiP isn't about the process, it isn't about Trans101 – the conference offers many seminars for the transgender individual. PiP is about partners focusing on their own needs, wants and desires. As many have said, someone who's trans has to be selfish, to put themselves first to get through it. Unfortunately, this has a huge impact on relationships. PiP is a place for partners to focus on themselves, how they feel and what they want and need from the relationship. But most importantly it's a safe place for people, whether partners of FtoMs or MtoFs, cross-dressers or transsexuals, to express their joys, pain, suffering, and hurt. As women, we are taught to take care of everyone else, to put their needs first, often to the neglect of ourselves. PiP is a place for partners to focus inward, take care of themselves, and in so doing, help their relationships. Male spouses are also welcome. Please see me or Andy Clark for more information. PiP is run as a series of support seminars with a focus on the general relationship, sexuality, or as a support group w/ Dr. Evan Eyler. But mostly, it's a daylong outpouring of joy and pain, tears and laughter.. This isn't a subject people feel comfortable talking about with their family and friends, so most are in isolation about it. Sharing with others who understand, who can help you find the path again to joy in your relationship, is what it's all about. FTM Mastectomy & Centurion Reconstruction Dr. Peter Raphael, Saturday, January 22, 10:30 am, Salon A One of the first surgeries that FTM clients typically undergo is removal of breast tissue to create a male chest, commonly referred to as "top surgery". Various procedures are available, most common being bilateral simple mastectomy with free nipple grafts, designed for clients who have both excess skin and breast tissue. Urogenital reconstruction of the bottom region is aimed at addressing: elimination of the vaginal canal, construction of a new penis (neophallus) and scrotum with testicular implants (scrotoplasty with implants), and urinary hookup. Clients may elect to address some or all of these issues. Procedures for bottom surgery tend to fall into two categories: phalloplasty procedures and metoidioplasty procedures. The "Centurion procedure" was developed at the American Institute For Plastic Surgery in an effort to enhance the existing metoidioplasty. A standard metoidioplasty creates a neophallus by performing a "clitoral release.” The resulting neophallus is limited to the existing length and girth of the hormone-enlarged clitoral gland. The Centurion procedure enhances the girth of the neophallus by re-routing the round ligaments into the neophallus to add bulk to the neophallus. These surgical techniques will be discussed with photographs of the results. How to Insure There is Life After Transition Diana Collins, Friday, January 21, 11:00 am, Salon C The goal of the presentation is to outline tips for a successful transition – preparing work, family, friends and associates. Anecdotes will be shared and examples of what to expect. How To Successfully Transition in Your Employment Moonhawk River Stone, MS., MHC, Saturday, January 22, 9:00 am, Salon B This workshop will take the participant through the entire process of transitioning on the job in a practical step by step model. The model Stone will present has been successfully used with his clients in a wide variety of settings and is flexible to any situation. Some of the areas covered include coming out, legal issues, developing a program to fit one's individual workplace. If it’s not all about me, then who is it about? How we communicate to our loved ones about being transgender Rebecca Shafir and Grace Stevens, Saturday, January 22, 2:00 pm, Independence Room When we are tg, we are often very self focused. Dr. Cameron Partridge, Saturday, January 22, 2:00 pm, Constitution Room Michael Dillon/Lobzang Jivaka (1915 -1962) is chiefly known for three inter-related contributions to contemporary trans communities and studies. First, he is known as the first person to have “fully” medically transitioned from female to male, a process he engaged between 1939-1949. Second, his 1946 book Self is identified as one of the earliest sources for the “trapped in the wrong body” trans narrative pattern. Finally, he is seen as a pioneer, particularly to transmen. Equally important, but unacknowledged, is the importance of theological reflection and spiritual practice to his transition and vocation. Having grown up in the Church of England, Dillon was a serious student of theology and philosophy and considered ordination as an Anglican deaconess before becoming a physician in the merchant navy. Ultimately he traveled away from both his faith and country of origin, framing his everyday struggles and the life narrative he finally composed as an ongoing process of spiritual wrestling and transformation. This lifelong process led him to India in 1958, where he became a Buddhist, took on the name Jivaka, gave up all his possessions, wrote about Buddhism for Western audiences, and died suddenly in 1962 as a monastic novice in the Mahayana branch of Buddhism. This workshop includes an overview of Dillon/Jivaka’s life, readings from his memoir Out of the Ordinary, which the workshop leader is currently co-editing for publication, and an opportunity for the gathered group to reflect upon questions and intersections of trans narrativity and spirituality in their own lives. What role, if any, do/have writings of trans forbears play(ed) in your own reflection and discernment about gender and embodiment? What role, if any, have narratives—or particular images or categories-- generated by religious, spiritual, or philosophical traditions played in your life thus far? With what sorts of narratives—how coherent or incoherent, in what sorts of conversation with religious, philosophical and/or spiritual traditions, and/or in what sorts of conversation with our trans forbears —do we choose to make sense of our bodies and lives?
