Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2016 Commitment Sunday Saturday/Sunday, March 12/13 This weekend at all Sunday Masses every parish household will be asked to make its commitment for this year’s Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2016 (AAA). Our parish assessment this year is $ 58,068. This means that if all 1,217 of our registered parishioners and friends to the parish contributed just $48.00 each we would meet the goal of $58,068. Please remember that all dollars donated in excess of our goal will be returned to the parish to meet our needs. Last week, all parishioners should have received a letter from the Archbishop and a brochure in the mail that explains the programs and services funded by the Annual Appeal. Through the Appeal we join with other parishes and the Archdiocese in ministering to youth, seniors, families, the sick and disadvantaged. We help train priests and deacons and we care for our retired priests. The Annual Appeal also helps the Archdiocese provide seminary tuition assistance, hospital chaplains and Archdiocesan services and ministries that benefit every parish and mission. Fifth Sunday of Lent - March 13, 2016 Special Lenten Collection Holy Thursday, March 24 The second Lenten collection scheduled for March 24th (Holy Thursday) will not be going to “Doctors without Borders,” as previously announced, but to Caritas Internationalis. We apologize for any confusion. Caritas Internationalis The Holy Year of Mercy Caritas Internationalis is the global confederation of 165 Catholic organizations working on behalf of the poor. It is the arm through which the Church delivers its moral mission to help the most vulnerable and excluded people, whatever their religion or race. Holy Thursday’s collection for the poor, will go to Caritas Internationalis to support the refugees coming from Africa to Europe. The Holy Year of Mercy is an invitation made by Pope Francis to us all to contemplate the mystery of mercy and undertake a pilgrimage of transformation. Thomas Aquinas described mercy as a “heartfelt sympathy for another’s distress”. The Holy Year is a time for compassion, forgiveness and reconciliation. Please make donation checks payable to St. Mary Cathedral – refugee project. Cathedral Clean-Up Day Saturday, March 19 9:00am – 12pm As we prepare for Holy Week and Easter and the thousands of visitors who will come to our church, we’re having another clean-up day. Join us for the entire morning, or just drop by for as long as you can. Light housekeeping, cleaning, minor repairs, litter pick-up, etc. We’ll supply all tools, cleaning items and gloves – just bring your energy and elbow grease. Lunch will be provided! Sign up sheets will be available in the sacristy or you can also call (415) 567-2020. Welcome to our new Parochial Vicar, Fr. Driscoll! Please welcome our new parochial vicar, Fr. Driscoll who started his Assignment to the Cathedral on March 1st. Fr. Patrick Driscoll was born in San Diego on June 15, 1959 at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California. (same hospital and same month, three years later, as Archbishop Cordileone). He is one of seven children raised by his parents Jim and Loretto Driscoll (both deceased). Fr. Driscoll grew up in Santa Barbara and moved to the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1981 to finish college at San Jose State University with a degree in Public Relations from the School of Journalism. After working in Sales and Marketing, and at the encouragement of a parishioner, he entered the seminary for discernment of his vocation. Eventually, he was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on May 24, 2008 in Saint Louis Missouri. He refers to himself as ʺan old, new priestʺ. He holds a Masters of Arts in Sacred Theology and a Master of Divinity from Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in Saint Louis, Missouri. Father Driscoll enjoys walking and visiting with family and friends. He has 27 nieces and nephews and about 10 great-nephews/nieces--all of which, he says, keeps him ʺquite busyʺ when he visits. We are delighted to have Fr. Driscoll join our parish family and look forward to working and worshiping with him. Welcome Father! CATHEDRAL EASTER FLOWERS As the solemnity of Easter approaches, the Cathedral welcomes contributions to help adorn its great space with floral tributes. Your gift, which can honor someone special, will share the joy and beauty of this special time of the church year with everyone who visits the Cathedral during this season of renewal and hope. Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.
