A city of golden sunshine and friendly faces, Durban is home to Africa’s busiest
harbour. The city spreads around the picturesque Natal Bay and offers so
much to so many that it has deservedly become one of South Africa’s most
visited tourist destinations.Durban itself is probably best known for its “
Golden Mile”, a 6km walk along the golden sands, that stretches from the
Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World in the north to uShaka Marine World in the south.
The Golden Mile is one of the main tourist attractions in Durban with loads of surrounding activities.
Durban Botanical Gardens
The Durban Botanic Gardens (DBG) traces its origins to colonial times, when it
was founded in 1849 for the introduction and trial of potentially useful
commercial crops. The gardens later developed collections of sub-tropical
trees, palms and orchids. The Durban Botanic Gardens remain
classic botanic gardens, reflecting the universality of the plant
kingdom. It has, for over 100 years, had a fine mixed arboretum
of African, Asian and American trees.

Victoria Street Market over 170 stalls
To walk into the Victoria Street Market is to enter an oriental haven.
This vibrant Indian Market with its Spice, colourful stalls, fish market and
curio outlets is a favourite for tourists. A wide range of African arts and
crafts are available including finely woven baskets, beaded dolls and
animals, intricately carved chairs, soapstone sculptures
and so much more.
Durban Harbour
The idea of Durban as a port dates back to 1824 when the first European
settlers made a landing with the intention of setting up a trading post
.The Bay of Natal (Durban Bay) was one of the few natural harbours available
along the east coast of southern Africa between Algoa Bay and Delagoa Bay
(now Maputo Bay).
In addition Durban has a interesting Maritime Museum located near
the Bat Centre (opposite Aliwal Street) which includes several tugs,
a minesweeper and other large and small exhibits. There is a nominal
fee for entry and parking
