President’s Message:
JOIN US FOR THE MUNI’S 2016 SEASON!
We have such an exciting line up of shows this
summer (and a few facility updates as well)!
Our annual “Audition Workshop” is coming up
on Saturday, February 20th. This is a great
opportunity for individuals (new and veteran
performers alike) to meet the production
staffs, obtain information about auditions and
volunteering at The Muni, and get first “dibs”
on vocal and dance audition times & days. The
annual Audition Workshop is at the Hoogland
Center for the Arts, and you’ll find more
information about it in this edition of Sightlines.
Do you have a special talent and need a great
place to share that talent? The Muni is an
all-volunteer organization, and we’d love for
you to share your talent with us. Each year, The
Muni is very grateful for the 1,000+ individuals
who help with things like building sets, raking
leaves, painting and scene art, repairs on the
site, building special props, ushering during
performances, and much more. We can’t do it
without them, and would appreciate your help
too! If you are interested in contributing to
“Muni Magic,” please visit our website and let us
know your volunteer interests. We will contact
you with opportunities to share your talent, and
meet new friends from around the community.
There are many opportunities to become part
of The Muni family, even if painting and raking
leaves isn’t your forte. Each year, we are
honored to have the support of a very special
group of individuals called the “Backstagers.” The charitable contributions we receive from
the Backstagers are an enormous help to the
organization. There are added benefits to being
a Backstager… along with our sincere gratitude,
Backstagers enjoy premiere parking and priority
season ticketing. You can read more about being
a Backstager online at www.themuni.org or in
this issue of Sightlines.
Speaking of season tickets... you’ve picked them
up already, right? If not, no worries, there’s
still time to make sure you are ready to enjoy
fantastic shows this season like South Pacific,
Sweeney Todd, Nice Work If You Can
Get It and Disney’s Little Mermaid. Season
tickets are a great way to save money and make

a great gift for someone special. So treat yourself
or a friend to a slice of Muni Magic! Season tickets
are available at local retailers in Springfield,
Jacksonville, Sherman and Williamsville.
New in 2016... There’s nothing quite like
performing in front of a Muni audience on a
lovely summer night. The Board of Managers
and Trustees thought we would enhance this
experience by upgrading several buildings used
by our backstage performers and volunteers. So,
the Lundgren Building, backstage bathrooms and
backstage maintenance shed were all demolished
last Fall. In their place, a beautiful new building
is being constructed that is 3-4 times larger and
will include new climate controlled restroom
facilities at stage level, an updated Sound and
Light resource room, as well as a large area for
indoor storage for sets, paint and construction
materials, you name it. The concrete slab where
the backstage bathrooms once stood will be
expanded and serve as the location for an updated
Maintenance shed.
We continue to enhance registration for vocal
and dance auditions through our popular online
registration form. Auditionees will continue to
be able to manage their own vocal and dance
audition registrations, update their contact
information, and much more. If you’d like to
learn more about the online audition registration
form, make sure to attend the Audition Workshop
or visit our website, www.TheMuni.org for more
details.
Finally, I’d like to give special thanks to our
season sponsors. Organizations and individuals
like Springfield Clinic, Maynerich Financial,
Illini Bank and RSM are truly outstanding
organizations and we are very grateful for their
continued support of local performance art.
Thanks to these community partners, we can
ensure there is plenty of Muni Magic each and
every summer.

long sessions; vocal/movement auditions
are separate from dance auditions. Plan
to check in at the registration table at least 45
minutes prior to your scheduled audition time,
allowing time for the vocal warm-ups before the
actual audition.
In closed auditions with a small group of other
auditionees, each auditionee will perform a short
(2 minutes or less) song of his or her choosing.
Auditionees may be asked to read from a script

Some roles require auditionees to participate in
a full dance audition. This is largely based upon
the demands of the role for which the adult is
auditioning or for which the director is considering
him/her. (Consult the “Parts Available”
scheduled separately from vocal auditions.
CHILDREN’S AUDITIONS take place in
two-hour sessions; shows casting children are South

hour, Muni staff will teach auditionees a simple
song and dance. Auditionees’ parents or guardians
are welcome to observe this learning portion of the
audition.
The second hour is the closed audition, and only

South Pacific —
Presented by Springfield Clinic
JUNE 17-19 |22-26
Rehearsals Start APRIL 25
DIRECTOR: John Sivak
PRODUCER: Mark Wheeler
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Connor McNamara
VOCAL DIRECTOR: Zoey Zara
CHOREOGRAPHER: Andrew Maynerich
John Sivak
A Muni favorite, South Pacific, along with
Music Man, opened Muni’s season in 1965.
This will be the fifth time South Pacific will play
on the Muni stage.
Set against the dramatic background of an idyllic
South Pacific island during WWII South Pacific
intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and
prejudice to create a story that is all at once hilarious,
heartbreaking, and thought-provoking. The musical
follows two intercultural love stories: Nellie, a spunky
nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a
French plantation owner on the island who has
two children from his late Polynesian wife; at the
same time, U.S. Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful
island native named Liat. Both Americans find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural
prejudices with their amorous feelings, all the while
under the dark cloud of a war that is coming ever
closer to their island paradise.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE: Approximately 37-38 adults
will be cast and two-to-three children. Auditionees
should prepare a 2-minute maximum vocal piece
that will highlight their singing ability, and be
prepared to read a small amount of dialog that shows
character development. If you are auditioning for
South Pacific as your first choice, the director requests
you sing something from the show or in the style
of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Anyone auditioning
specifically for the role of Emile is required to sing,
“Some Enchanted Evening.”
PARTS AVAILABLE: Auditionees for South Pacific must take part in either
the “Movement” or “Dance” portion of auditions;
characters requiring “Dance” have been noted below.
Nellie Forbush: (Soprano/Dance/Age Mid 20’s to
Early 30’s) A feisty but somewhat naïve young nurse
from Arkansas who falls in love with Emile. Something
of a tomboy with an optimistic outlook.
Emile De Becque: (Baritone/ Age Late 30’s to Late
Sightlines • February 2016
40’s) A wealthy, cultured and dignified French plantation
owner with grit and glamour who falls in love with
Nellie. Good French accent required.
Lt. Joseph Cable: (Tenor/ Age Mid 20’s to Mid 30’s) An
extremely handsome and intelligent Lieutenant with a
bright future in the US Navy. Luther Billis: (Baritone/Dance/Age 20’s to 30’s) A
loveable character who provides his fellow marines with
much-needed comic relief. Does not respect authority.
Enterprising, stubborn. Adores Nellie.
Bloody Mary: (Mezzo Soprano/Late 30’s to 50’s) A
shrewd Polynesian souvenir dealer who is also trying
to find her daughter a rich husband; brassy; must have
great subtle comic timing.

Mary’s Daughter. Heartbreakingly delicate, beautiful
and the picture of purity.
Captain Brackett: (Speaking Role/Age Early 50’s to Early
60’s) Commanding officer on the island. A pompous
yet competent officer who hides a heart of gold. Strong
Actor.
Commander William Harbison: (Speaking Role/Age
Early 20’s to Early 40’s) Bracket’s right hand man.
Can be hot-headed, especially when Billis is concerned.
Strong actor.
“Stewpot” George Watts: (Baritone/Dance/ Age Mid
20’s to Late 30’s) Carpenter’s Mate Second Class, a
funny, schlubby character man, one of Luther Billis’
cohorts.

is a sailor. He acts often as Luther Billis’ sidekick, a
funny character man of the studious type.
Ngana: (Mezzo Soprano/Dance/Age 10-12) Emile’s
daughter. Because her mother was an islander, she
is half-Polynesian and half-French. She is curious,
fun-loving, charming, and well-behaved. Must be able
to learn how to speak lines in French with a convincing
accent.
Jerome: (Mezzo Soprano/Dance/Age 8-10 years old)

DIRECTORS: Carly Shank
PRODUCER: Steve Rotello
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: John Paris
VOCAL DIRECTOR: Addie Gramelspacher
Carly Shank
[Muni debut] A dark musical thriller for mature
audiences.
Sweeney Todd is the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era
barber who returns home to London after fifteen
years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge
who tore his family apart. When revenge eludes him,
Sweeney Todd and his accomplice, the resourceful
pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett, plot an indiscriminately
murderous plan that leads them down a dangerous
path with deadly consequences. Perhaps composer/
lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score, Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic, and full of soaring beauty,
pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. DIRECTOR’S NOTE: No dance auditions are required for
Sweeney Todd. Instead, we are looking for singeractors and actor-singers who are good musicians – to
deal with the complexity of Sondheim’s music – and
excellent storytellers – to bring the dark nature of an
improbable story to life in a real way. All characters
will use accents – British R.P. for Anthony, Joanna,
Judge, and the Beadle, and cockney for most others.

“Sweeney Todd” Cont’d...
Ages listed serve as a guideline only (“stage ages”).
PARTS AVAILABLE:
Sweeney Todd: (Bass/Baritone F2 – Gb4, 35-55) The
villain protagonist. He is a man tortured by loss and
consumed by revenge after he is wrongly convicted
and sentenced to life imprisonment. Dark, brooding
but desirable, violent, treacherous and intense.
Mrs. Lovett: (Alto/Mezzo G3 – E5, 30-50) A
pragmatic, amoral woman consumed by the need to
be needed. She is capitalistic, broadly comic, and
appears motherly – although it seems she constantly
gives of herself, in the end we learn that she was
really taking all along. Anthony Hope: (Tenor Ab2 – F#4, 18-30) The young
lover. Naïve, hopeful, idealistic, handsome, kind and
trusting.
Johanna: (Soprano C3 – Bb5, 15-30) The ingénue.
Beautiful, pure-hearted, charming but unsettled.
Adolfo Pirelli: (Tenor B2 – C5, 30-50) A charlatan
using both rich Italian and rough Irish dialects, a very
high operatic style tenor. Showy, unscrupulous and a
braggart.
Tobias Ragg: (Tenor Bb2 – A4, 14-20s) Pirelli’s young,
simple, but kind-hearted drum-beating assistant.
Pure, kind, unassuming but ultimately brutalized.
Beggar Woman: (Soprano or Mezzo-Soprano Ab3 –
F5, 25-40) A destitute woman. Desperate, fearful and
intense, with a schizophrenic personality ranging from
pathetic to crudely suggestive.
Judge Turpin: (Bass/Baritone E2 – F#4, 35-60) An
immoral, power-satiated authority figure. Selfish,
lecherous, corrupt, and a hypocrite.
Beadle Bamford: (Tenor D3 – D5, 35-60) A bully
with a thin veneer of gentility. Unctuous, immoral, a
dandy.
Ensemble: A wide variety of roles will come from the
ensemble, which functions much of the time as a
Greek chorus, commenting with a collective voice on
the dramatic action. Ensemble members must have
strong voices and good musicianship. They must also
be able to demonstrate a strong concentration, intensity, and the ability to play characters in a handful of
street scenes. An estimated 20-25 people will be cast
in the ensemble. Ensemble soloists: There are a number of important
solo sung lines in the show, including one quintet
for 5 un-named characters (all of which will double
into the main ensemble). Note: All lead roles will be
members of the ensemble at various times in the
production.

[Muni debut] A musical set in the 20s, with great dance
numbers and an unlikely love story.
Fun-loving bachelor Jimmy Winter meets rough female
bootlegger Billie Bendix the weekend of his wedding.
Jimmy, who has been married three (or is it four?) times
before, is preparing to marry Eileen Evergreen, a selfobsessed modern dancer. Thinking Jimmy and Eileen will
be out of town, Billie and her gang hide cases of alcohol
in the basement of Jimmy’s Long Island mansion. But
when Jimmy, his wife-to-be and her prohibitionist family
show up at the mansion for the wedding, Billie and her
cohorts pose as servants, causing hijinks galore.
Police Department. Fiercely, and to a fault, dedicated
to his job. Seems gruff on the outside. Billie Bendix: (High alto-lower soprano/dance/mid
20s-early 30s) A tough, clever, feisty and street-wise
young woman. Partners in rum running with her best
friends, Cookie and Duke. She has always lived in
a man’s world until she meets Jimmy, a millionaire
playboy and falls in love. Must be a skilled farceur.
Very appealing, attractive and underneath her tough veneer, she must have a strong sense of
vulnerability. Eileen Evergreen: (1st soprano/dance/late 20s-mid
30s) Lush and lovely, she is the self-proclaimed finest
interpreter of modern dance in the world – as well
as being spoiled rotten and completely self-involved.
Jimmy’s fiancée and Senator Evergreen’s daughter. A
dish with great comic skills. Estonia Dulworth, The Duchess of Woodford: (Alto
to high soprano/late 40s-late 50s) An upper-class,
bejeweled dowager. A fervent prohibitionist –
but underneath there is a wild spirit just waiting to
be freed. Jeannie Muldoon: (Alto-soprano/dance/mid 20s) A
lovely, sexy chorus girl from Brooklyn who falls
in love with Duke, whom she thinks is the Duke of
England. She still loves him for who he is once she
finds out the truth. They are the perfect couple -- not
too bright but winning. Millicent Winter: (speaking/60s) Jimmy’s mother.
She is ‘Auntie Mame’; full of life with absolutely no
pretenses even though she is unbelievably rich. Lives
life to the fullest. Has sex appeal. We find out she
made all of her money as a rum runner.

butler and has to keep up the charade. Actor must
understand old fashioned vaudeville style comedy a
la Abbott and Costello. Duke Mahoney: (Baritone/early 30s-mid 40s) Cookie’s
