And Facebook and Twitter were on fire recently with the news that the legendary, 31- year-old rock band R.E.M. had broken up. It was all over cable news stations, too. One friend complained that he learned of the band’s statement to its fans via Fox News Channel, the conservative network that is the antithesis of R.E.M.’s liberal politics. Regardless of how they found out, the news was true. R.E.M. was no more. “To our fans and friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band,’’ the band wrote at remhq.com. ‘’Wewalkawaywithagreatsenseofgratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.’’ R.E.M. was the ultimate college-rock band that eventually transcended boundaries by signing to a major label, releasing multiplatinum albums and scoring a major FM hit with a song fronted by a mandolin. The quartet released 15-plus records – about half of which are essential listens in the college-rock, alt-rock, preindie- rock oeuvres. And it laid the groundwork for modern indie rock, including the work of Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse. R.E.M. was important, yeah. But R.E.M. was easy to like because its members were making music their own weird way in a Georgia college town few people outside of the Southeast had ever heard of. They sang about Gardening at Night and Nightswimming, songs that had nothing to do with gardening or swimming. R.E.M. gave us a soundtrack to live by that wasn’t the pabulum dominating the airwaves at the time – Journey, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Train. Instead of indulging in the literal, singer Michael Stipe revelled in the literate. His strange, half-mumbled lyrics became a cornerstone of the band’s early years, which included the unparalleled releases Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant and Document. The band’s basic instrumentation – known and celebrated for its rudimentary, back- to-the-garage stylings – caught up with Stipe’s intense lyricism in the band’s fruitful mid-period. R.E.M. was all over FM radio and large amphitheatres via the celebrated releases Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People and Monster. But more important, these releases saw the band become the fully formed group it was destined to be. But the record was also home to the FM staple Stand, the popminded Pop Song 89, the thoughtful World Leader Pretend, the Rock Band video-game-destined Orange Crush. Guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry had C A model presents creations by Mexican designer Macario Jimenez at the Mercedes-Benz DFashion show, in Mexico City, Mexico. (REUTERS) jumped out of the garage, expanding their repertoire and adding to the legend that was becoming R.E.M. Crazy commercial success followed via singles Losing My Religion, Shiny Happy People, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts and What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? the last of which came off 1994’s Monster. But it’s that record that will be remembered by fans and historians as a turning point for R.E.M. While touring the record, drummer Berry suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm and left the band and his performing career behind him. There was speculation the remaining members would call it a day right there, but instead they came back a few years later with New Adventures in Hi-Fi, the first album of R.E.M.’s late period – and a marked downturn in the band’s creative and commercial output. The last 15 years haven’t been completely fruitless. The drowsy Daysleeper from Up is a dreamy, day-in-thelife narrative that is as lush as it is Startalk Lifeline R.E.M. was the ultimate college-rock band that eventually transcended boundaries by signing to a major label, releasing multiplatinum albums and scoring a major FM hit with a song fronted by a mandolin plain. Imitation of Life from Reveal is a chiming, sing-songy tribute to the band’s love of the accessible. Supernatural Superserious from Accelerate was a throwback to the Green days, when Buck’s guitars were big and chunky, Stipe’s vocals were bold and out-front, and Mills’ backups were soaring and ever-prominent. Many have made the argument in the past few days that R.E.M.’s breakup was long overdue. Had the band called it a day after Berry left the group, we would have missed out on a lot of songs. More important, we wouldn’t have had the many tours. R.E.M. needed stay together this last decade and a half to finish what it started. Doing so added to a singular history that is monumental. Would Spoon’s Britt Daniel or pop sensation Brett Dennen have started writing songs without R.E.M.’s influence? It would be impossible to calculate the wide-ranging influence of R.E.M. over the last three-plus decades. But we’ll most likely have a chance to talk about that in the coming years when R.E.M. makes the inevitable reunion tour/comeback show/farewell concert rounds. The guys are above certain ploys, but we wouldn’t put that one past them. From top-left: Bassist Mike Mills, Guitarist Peter Buck and Michael Stipe. Courtney Love to launch clothing line Is Jessica Simpson Pregnant? ROCKER Courtney Love says that she will soon release her womenswear line - Never The Bride. The 47-year-old was among the famous faces on the front row at designer Roberto Cavalli’s show during Milan Fashion Week where she revealed that she will bring out a collection in the near future after finding a partner. “I hope that’s not a self-fulfiling prophecy though,” contactmusic.com quoted Love as saying. SINGER-ACTRESS Jessica Simpson, who is all set to marry Eric Johnson, is reportedly pregnant. The 31-yearold fuelled speculation that she was expecting her first child when she refused to toast fiance Johnson’s 32nd birthday with champagne at a recent party, reports contactmusic.com. “She’s already having kooky cravings,” the source told In Touch magazine. Simpson is planning to wed Johnson in November this year. 30 Saturday, October 1, 2011 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Mashhur Celebrity Film Movie Mudir Director Zits Mukhrij Producer Katib Writer Mudir Raqs Choreographer UN DÍA COMO HOY Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Picture 52mm wide x 49mm deep @ 300 pixels per inch Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: [email protected] S TA R TA L K ARIES [mar 21 – apr 19] This is the perfect day for adventure. Saturday, October 1, 2011 SCIENCE www.qatar-tribune.com 31 50 new planets take the total to 654 Science guide FIFTY new alien worlds, including 16 “super Earths,” have been found – the largest extrasolar planet haul announced at one time, astronomers say. The discoveries bring the total number of known extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, to 645. “The harvest of discoveries has exceeded all expectations, and includes an exceptionally rich population of super-Earths and Neptune-type planets hosted by stars very similar to our sun,” study leader Michel Mayor, an astronomer at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, said in a statement. One of the newly discovered worlds, dubbed HD 85512b, lies at the edge of its star’s habitable zone – the region around a star where liquid water, and thus life as we know it, can exist. The planetary treasure trove was found using an instrument called HARPS – short for High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher – at the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla facility in Chile. Radial velocity, also known as the Doppler wobble technique, involves searching for wobbles in a star’s light that indicate the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet. The method most easily finds very massive planets that orbit close to their host stars. But in recent years astronomers have used radial velocity to find or confirm a number of planets down to a few times Earth’s mass. In fact, HARPS alone has detected about two-thirds of all known exoplanets with masses less than that of Neptune. Scientists next plan to upgrade HARPS hardware and software and use the instrument to conduct a more refined search of nearby sunlike stars for rocky Earthlike planets that could support life. NASA’S NEW ROCKET, AND 4 ‘LOST LAUNCHERS’ NYT SYNDICATE N ASA’s new, supersize rocket system announced this week will ferry people-packed spaceships to the Moon, Mars, and perhaps even more exotic destinations in the future – or maybe not. The Space Launch System (SLS), as NASA calls its new three-rocket configuration, could one day tower 97.5 meters (320 feet) tall – higher than the Statue of Liberty – and haul the equivalent of 12 fully grown elephants into low-Earth orbit. With the end of the space shuttle programme, the new system is meant to eventually carry the Orion MultiPurpose Crew Module to get humans into space. Both SLS and an even bigger system to follow would recycle space shuttle technology, including the liquid-fuel systems and twin solid-fuel rocket boosters. However, experts note that the SLS comes from a troubled lineage of ‘’lost’’ rocket designs that were warped beyond recognition, derailed from original missions, or altogether abandoned. ‘’SLS may not end up being built at all,’’ said Jeff Foust, an aerospace analyst and editor of the Space Review website. ‘’A lot depends on continuing debtreduction efforts, changes in the White House and Congress, and the whims of politicians.’’ The $18-billion price tag and planned test launch date of 2017 are particularly suspect, Foust said. ‘’I’m skeptical they’ll build it on the cost and schedule they’re talking about,’’ he said. ‘’It’s rare for any spacecraft this large to come in reasonably on budget and on schedule.’’ of a solid rocket booster in half the weight – on the ground. Engineers deemed NERVA flight ready, but it never flew: The Nixon Administration pulled the plug on Mars-bound plans in 1972. The Space Launch System (SLS), as NASA calls its new three- rocket configuration, could one day tower 97.5 meters (320 feet) tall – higher than the Statue of Liberty – and haul the equivalent of 12 fully grown elephants into low-Earth orbit. ABANDONED ARES As talk of ending NASA’s space shuttle programme arose in 2004, the President George W Bush announced the Constellation programme, which aimed to return people to the Moon by 2020. Constellation’s heaviest cargo, such as the proposed Altair lunar lander, was to head into low-Earth orbit without astronauts, on top of the never built Ares V launch system. The crew would have later ridden atop the much smaller Ares I rocket – illustrated above – to rendezvous with their heavy equipment. The Ares I design was derived from the space shuttle’s solidfuel rocket boosters, and a prototype weathered an unmanned flight test on October 29, 2009. But on February 1, 2010, President Barack Obama canceled the entire Constellation programme, diverted some of its allotted funding to commercial spaceflight development – and this week supplanted the Constellation Moon shot with the SLS deep-space mission and its massive new rocket design. SCRAPPED ‘FLY BACK’ BOOSTER NOVA A NO-GO The large Nova rocket booster, illustrated at right next to Saturn I and Saturn V rockets, was in development in the 1960s before NASA decided on the smaller Saturn V as the thunderous launch system to deliver Apollo astronauts and their gear to the Moon. The Apollo lunar-orbit rendezvous system involved a Saturn V rocket launching two spacecraft – a main vehicle and a lunar module – toward the Moon. The two craft went into lunar orbit, and the module detached for landing on the Moon. When the mission was complete, the lander returned to orbit, rendezvoused with the main craft, and both headed back to Earth. By contrast, the five-stage Nova rocket would have sent everything directly to the Moon in one colossal blast – with the uppermost stages actually landing on the Moon and later returning the crew home. The technical challenges of build- NASA’s new supersize rocket system could ferry people-packed spaceships to the moon. ing such a monstrous rocket soon became apparent, however, and NASA abandoned Nova in 1961. NUCLEAR MARS MISSION While the Apollo programme raced to complete the first Moon landing in the 1960s, NASA asked other engineers to A NASA engineer observes a model of a space shuttle orbiter attached to a liquid-fuel booster rocket in a wind tunnel. develop ways to reach Mars. One idea was chock full of uranium. The Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application, or NERVA, was to be fitted to the upper stage of a big rocket. Many engines would be clustered together in orbit to give enough power for interplanetary travel. To create propulsion, NERVA pumped liquid hydrogen into a reactor loaded with nuclear fuel rods. The expanding hydrogen gas spewed out of a cone-shaped propellant tank. NASA and the Atomic Energy Commission built and successfully tested the device – which packed the oomph The large Nova rocket booster, illustrated at right next to Saturn I and Saturn V rockets. An abandoned Ares. In 1980, a NASA engineer proposed a model of a space shuttle orbiter attached to a liquid-fuel booster rocket in a wind tunnel. NASA initially imagined the space shuttle as the ultimate reusable spaceship, with not one but two manned components: the space shuttle orbiter and a liquid-fuel ‘’fly back’’ booster, which onboard astronauts could glide back to Kennedy Space Center, making the booster easy to reuse. Budgetary and political pressure piled on, however, and ultimately led to a different beast. Instead of the fly-back booster design, each space shuttle lifted off via an unmanned external fuel tank and two solid-fuel rocket boosters, which were difficult to reuse after falling back to Earth. In the end, each launch of the space shuttle – research and development included – is estimated to have cost about $1.5 billion. ‘’Like Apollo, the liquid-fuel boosters were expensive up front. But the cost per flight would have been smaller’’ with the fly-back booster, said former NASA archivist David Portree, now a historian at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center. ‘’In the end, the space shuttle we got was more expensive than what NASA could have built.’’ 32 Saturday, October 1, 2011 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 7:00 pm BBC World: BBC WORLD NEWS 10:00 pm Cartoon Network: BEN 10 7:30 pm Fox Sports: ASIAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP 2ND RD HIGHLIGHTS, SINGAPORE 11:40 pm Discovery HD Showcase: FLYING WILD ALASKA TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM 7:30 PM 8:00 PM BBC WORLD CNN INTERNATIONAL CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY JUNIOR BBC WORLD NEWS TALK ASIA ADVENTURE TIME HANDY MANNY INSIDE AFRICA THE GRIM ADVENTURES OF BILLY & MANDY THE HIVE CHOWDER MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE THE GRIM ADVENTURES OF BILLY & MANDY A POEM IS... People with anxiety are more likely to assume the latter interpretation. These negative thoughts are believed to drive and maintain their feelings of low mood and anxiety. If you can change that negative style of thinking, perhaps you can change mood of anxious teenagers”, said Lau, according to an Oxford statement. “Of course, it`s normal for teenagers to be worried about exams, friends, social acceptance, and about the future generally. In some extreme cases, kids avoid going to school because they are anxious. This is not just being a little bit worried”, she added. Thirty-six healthy teenagers from schools in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire took part in the study, and were randomly allocated to receive training to boost positive or negative readings of scenarios. Those who received positive training tended to endorse positive readings of the ambiguous scenarios, while those who received the negative training were more likely to view the scenarios more negatively. Brandolini is the rare decorator to venture boldly into the rarefied climes of avant-garde design, and often nonsensical-looking creations, that can be glimpsed at Milan’s famed design fair, the Salone Internationale del Mobile Muriel Brandolini, an interior designer. Jewel box. DAVID COLMAN NYT SYNDICATE URIEL BRANDOLINI is having quite a moment. One of interior design’s most influential (and eccentric) figures, Brandolini burst out in a riot of color, material and motif more than 15 years ago. As laid out in The World of Muriel Brandolini, a lavish tome out from Rizzoli next month, her style may look au courant now, but in the midst of the safe, classic 1990s, it was like a bucketful of red paint tossed on a tasteful table setting. “I was the only one using colour!” she recalled last week in the Upper East Side town house she shares with her husband, Nuno Brandolini d’Adda, an Italian aristocrat and investment banker. It never occurred to her, she said, that colour might be something to avoid. She had grown up in Vietnam and on Martinique, where vivid colour was as natural a choice as Benjamin Moore Decorators White is here. And colour isn’t even the half of it. Scarcely are you in the front door when you find that the walls of the small entryway are, in fact, covered in tiny glass beads. “I like to make rooms like a jewel box,” she said. It is a tactic that, however impractical it sounds, yields refreshing results. Brandolini is the rare decorator to venture boldly into the rarefied climes of avant-garde design, and often nonsensical-looking creations, that can be glimpsed at Milan’s famed design fair, the Salone Internationale del Mobile. Instead of placing her designs starkly in the all-white sets so many end up in, she uses them more like out-there fashion accessories than as furniture or art. (Enthusiasts, take note: a sale of the “accessories” Brandolini has accumulated, including furniture and art, will be auctioned at Phillips de Pury on October 21, and a pop-up shop of her designs is now open at Barneys New York.) But among the possessions she is sending to the Phillips auction, there is one category not on the table: her jewellery. “I feel naked without it,” Brandolini said flatly. “My husband always teases me and says, ‘You’re so Vietnamese.’ Because Vietnamese women love jewellery. And it’s true. It’s a security blanket. Plus, I always think: ‘What if I have to get out of here fast? What could I take?”’ And Brandolini has a particular weakness for the designs of James de Givenchy, whose company, Taffin is known for extravagant gestures. She has several of his pieces, including a sea urchin ring and a pair of teardrop pearl rings (one in black and one in white). But she is most fond of, paradoxically, the simplest and most understated: a pair of diamond studs. Well, understated is perhaps the wrong M Diamond accessories. word. These are, after all, perfectly matched 11-carat round diamonds. When Brandolini was about to turn 40, she secretly asked de Givenchy to design something very special. The two men worked in concert on the design, looking at many stones before finding a pair they thought perfect. Cut more than 100 years ago in what is now called the old-mine cut, they have fewer facets and are less sparkly than today’s reigning brilliant-cut stones. On the other hand, the large facets make them look so cartoonishly large that one assumes they must be anything but diamonds. When her husband gave them to her, tossing them to her without ceremony in a little box, she was amazed but did not doubt what they were for a millisecond. “Of course, I knew they were diamonds!” she said, with a riotous laugh. “He wouldn’t dare give me a piece of glass!” Not only was she impressed with their maharajan size, but the setting as well. “Usually I am a bit of a dictator about these kind of things,” she said. “Usually, I give you a big hint.” The earrings are her favourites. “They’re so beautiful,” she said. “They’re like an instant facelift.” Despite her husband’s objections, she said, “I’ll wear them with sandals and a djellabah to the market. I always tell him: ‘They’re so big, no one thinks they are diamonds. Everyone thinks they are glass!’ Of course, anyone who knows Brandolini well would know them to be real. As fanciful as both she and her style are, she professes a surprisingly passionate belief in authenticity. “I love things being exactly what they are,” she said, putting the earrings away. “I’d rather have nothing.” There’s little chance of nothing with Brandolini d’Adda and de Givenchy around. “My birthday is coming soon,” she mused mischievously. “I hope I get something nice.” Saturday, October 1, 2011 HOLLYWOOD Scene unscene www.qatar-tribune.com Lopez buys $18 million home Hudson launches weight-loss centre SINGER and Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez has bought an $18 million house in Water Mill area of the Hamptons in New York. The house boasts of heated marble floors in the master bath, multiple walk-in closets and imported limestone flooring in the foyer. It also has seven fireplaces, seven bedrooms and panoramic water views, reports people.com. Lopez announced her split from husband Marc Anthony in July after seven years of marriage. The couple have three-year-old twins Max and Emme. ACTRESS Jennifer Hudson, who became the face of Weight Watchers last year, has now opened her own weight-loss centre in her native Chicago. Hudson, who she 80 pounds (36.2 kilograms) is helping others to do the same after launching the Weight Watchers Jennifer Hudson Center on Tuesday. “I never thought I would make it to have my own centre. I’m so honoured to be here and see this day,” said Hudson. Weight Watchers bosses have vowed to donate a portion of the facility’s profits to the newly-established kids’ charity, the Julian D King Gift Foundation, set up by Hudson in memory of her late nephew, Julian King. JENNIFER HUDSON JENNIFER LOPEZ What’s Your Number? fails to add up As it sounds as Ally and her ally — hunky neighbour Colin, who conveniently has a snoop’s background, growing up in a family of cops — track down the men in her life one by one A movie scene from What’s Your Number? AP OLLYWOOD’S new age of realistically raunchy, female-driven romantic comedies takes a step backward with What’s Your Number?, a dollop of forgettable fluff that’s as dull and predictable as they come. If Kristen Wiig’s Bridesmaids was a 10 and Cameron Diaz’s Bad Teacher was a 6, then What’s Your Number? rates a 2 or 3, straining through a similar R-rated sensibility but delivering the usual vanilla of most PG-13 romances. As she usually does, Anna Faris comes through with a spirit and quirkiness far more engaging than the material merits, creating a character you’d like to embrace if only she wasn’t forced to behave so stupidly and shallowly. But it’s difficult to get caught up in what essentially is a onenote, feature-length gag about a woman’s sudden fixation that she’s slept around too much and that one of those former partners must have been her perfect mate. Particularly when the filmmakers had the misfortune of starting their story with Faris stealthily preening so she’ll look like a cover girl for her current partner when he wakes beside her. It might have looked like an original moment from director Mark Mylod, a veteran of British TV as well as HBO’s Entourage, and screenwriters Gabrielle Allan and Jennifer Crittenden, if it weren’t a bad echo of an identical — and much more clever and genuine — sequence in Bridesmaids. Based on Karyn Bosnak’s novel 20 Times a Lady, What’s Your Number? has Faris’ Ally Darling in similar straits as Wiig in Bridesmaids — newly fired and fumbling romantically while everyone else seems to cruise effortlessly into love and marriage. Ally freaks after reading an article stating that most women average 10.5 sexual partners in their lives and that those who sleep with 20 or more men are prone to insecurities and low self-esteem that make them unlikely to land a husband. She tallies up her number and realises with horror that she’s just hit that terrible milestone, so Ally vows to go without sex while she H Anna Faris (left) and Chris Evans. reconnects with past lovers, figuring she threw back at least one fish she should have kept on the line. It’s as episodic as it sounds as Ally and her ally — hunky neighbour Colin (Chris Evans), who conveniently has a snoop’s background, growing up in a family of cops — track down the men in her life one by one. The exchanges between Ally and her lovers are quick and mostly humdrum, despite a nice range of cameo appearances by such actors as Anthony Mackie, Zachary Quinto, Martin Freeman, Joel McHale, Chris Pratt and Andy Samberg. Faris’ ditzy earnestness salvages some chuckles from a few of these interactions, particularly when she lapses into a series of deteriorating accents trying to impress an old British beau. Ari Graynor manages an easy rapport with Faris as Ally’s perfect, soon-to-bemarried sister. But Blythe Danner is stuck in phony overbearing mode as their mother, while Ed Begley Jr pops up as a lame afterthought as their dad. Bad as the movie is, it’s a nice showcase for Evans to display his comic charms (and rippling abs as a guy who goes shirtless an awful lot) after establishing his superhero cred in the title role of the summer hit Captain America: The First Avenger. From the instant Evans’ Colin appears on screen, though, it’s insipidly obvious who Ally’s Mr Right is, and the movie doesn’t add up enough fun moments to make getting there an interesting trip. There’s a real missed opportunity for some shrewd laughs and even social insights in Ally’s conviction that 20 lovers make her an undesirable slut while womanizing Colin, who’s clearly bedded far more partners, is simply living every guy’s dream. What’s Your Number? sticks to the low common denominators of most Hollywood romances, and it ends up a commonplace one for doing so. What’s Your Number?, a 20th Century Fox release, is rated R for sexual content and language. Running time: 106 minutes. One and a half stars out of four. 35 Scarlett Johansson says privacy invasion is unjust, wrong REUTERS CTRESS Scarlett Johansson now has spoken out for the first time since leaked nude photos of her appeared on several websites, saying that being a celebrity does not give others the right to invade her privacy. Earlier this month, the Iron Man 2 star joined the growing list of Hollywood celebrities, including High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens and Friends With Benefits star Mila Kunis, who have had private photos leaked online at the hands of hackers. In an interview with CNN, Johansson said celebrities are no different than anyone else when it comes to the right of privacy. “Just because you’re an actor or make films or whatever doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to your own personal privacy ... if that is sieged in some way, it feels unjust. It feels wrong,” said Johansson. The actress said life in the spotlight — and in this case, asserting herself in instances where her privacy has been invaded — can be a struggle. “It’s an adjustment, but I think there are certain instances where you give a lot of yourself and finally you have to kind of put your foot down and say, ‘Oh wait, I’m taking it back.’” W i t h i n hours of the p h o t o s appearing online on September 15, Johansson’s lawyer fired off cease and desist letters to multiple websites. This is a serious industry and you need to make some serious decisions,” said the 31-year-old. Zayed features in Love Breakups Zindagi along with his business partner, actress Dia Mirza, and newcomers like Pallavi Sharda, Satyadeep Misra, Umang Jain and Auritra Ghosh. The romantic comedy has been directed by Sahil Sangha and is slated for release on October 7. The actor, who is actor-producer Sanjay Khan’s son, stepped into Bollywood in 2003 with Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne. Later he went on to be a part of films like Dus, Shabd, Mission Istanbul, Yuvvraaj and Blue. Zayed says his dad wasn’t too keen on letting him get into production. “My dad is my most sincere critic. He likes me to be always humble about most things. Initially when I told him about my production plans, he thought that it was a big step too soon. But I feel it’s important to make your own decisions and make your own mistakes to understand things,” said the actor. Now when the film is ready for release, he has mixed feelings. “I’m anxious and I have butterflies in my stomach but the most important part is that we are ready for it. So this is one of those occasions when there is less nervousness and more anxiousness,” he added. I Dia Mirza (left) and Zayed Khan. Mahie Gill Mahie Gill wants to try out masala movies IANS MAHIE Gill is looking for an image makeover — so far she has played intense roles, but now the actress wants to try out a typical masala movie or a comedy. “I want to explore myself. I want to do a comedy or a masala film. In this profession, you get to play so many roles, you get to travel so much, you get to meet different kind of people,” said Mahie. Although the actress, who forayed into Bollywood with Dev D, says “she is happy with the way her career has shaped up but Everything has been very interesting and exciting, but it has not been easy though. The kind of work I was expecting after Dev D and Gulaal, I didn’t get the kind of work I wanted to do.” “After Dev D people started portraying me as a bold actor - whatever offer I got, I didn’t go for it. I was getting commercial films, but the roles I wanted to do, I was not getting it. Every role wanted me to be bold,” added Mahie who also features in Pan Singh Tomar. She will next be seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Sahib Biwi Gangster, which also stars Jimmy Shergill and Randeep Hooda.
