Welcome to the
Leelanau Peninsula
Wine Region
We’re thrilled you’ve chosen
our region as your travel
destination and hope that
you come to cherish the
peninsula as much as we
do. Whether you’re a
first-time guest or a
familiar face, we’re really
glad you’re here.
Use this brochure as a tool
to explore the Leelanau
Peninsula Wine Trail. As you
make your way along the
trail, take time to soak in magnificent views of
Lake Michigan, Glen Lake, Lake Leelanau and other
inland lakes beyond rolling hillsides of lush grapevines.
The trail is divided into three mini-trails to make touring
easy: the Sleeping Bear Loop, the Northern Loop and the
Grand Traverse Bay Loop. Along the way, you’ll discover
24 wine destinations, each known for its own unique
character and ambiance. Tasting rooms ranging from small
and rustic to large and modern await your arrival. At the
tasting bars, you’ll meet friendly winemakers and tasting
room staff eager to pour samples of their handcrafted
wines into your glass.
As you sip our wines and chat with the laid-back,
hardworking winemakers who produce them, we are
confident you’ll find many new wines to love. Be sure to
take home your favorites to stock your cellar and share
with family and friends throughout the year.
We hope you enjoy your journey and invite you to visit
us often, anytime of the year. We’re happy that you’ve
chosen Leelanau Peninsula as your wine destination.
And, always remember…
…life is better with a glass of Leelanau wine in your hand!
Cheers,
Matt Gregory

Leelanau Wine Facts
Leelanau’s wine industry ignited in 1970 when Bernie Rink
planted 15 acres of grapevines and opened Boskydel
Vineyard, Leelanau’s first tasting room.
Today, there are 680 acres of wine grapes growing along
the peninsula, which is 25 percent of the state’s total acres.
Leelanau Peninsula’s 45th Parallel is the same parallel as
the renowned Bordeaux and Cötes du Rhöne regions of
France and the Piedmont region of Italy.
Grapes and other fruit to thrive here due to the unique
“lake effect” that moderate the climate by keeping vines
cool in the summer and warm in in the winter.
Leelanau produces cool climate wines which are
typically clean, crisp and balanced, exhibiting real
varietal character.
Three types of grapes are used for wine on Leelanau
Peninsula: European Vinifera, French-American hybrids
and native varieties.
Leelanau is one of the few wine regions that produces ice
wine, a high-end dessert wine produced from grapes that
have been significantly frozen while still on the vine.
