The Pastor’s Keyboard - Msgr. Richard Huneger
Pope Francis speaking from the BIshop's Palace in Krakow, Poland, July 27, 2016, was already
stirring things up with participants in World Youth Day (WYD) by hosting an off-the-cuff Q and A and
telling them to ‘make chaos’ by spreading the joy of their faith. “You must do your duty and make chaos all night,” the Pope told them. “Show your Christian joy, the joy the Lord gave you to be in the community who follows Jesus.”
Hearing the first part of the sentence ("make chaos"), without the second ("how – share your faith"),
could be a bit confusing and unnerving, coming in the wake of numerous recent terrorist attacks in
various European countries, not least of which was the murder by ISIS members of Fr Jacques Hamel
at the altar as he was concluding Mass in Rouen, France, along with others present, including some
religious sisters. Such murders in sacred places, of course, are not at all a new in our history, but they
are especially disturbing when they involve the killing not just of a "mere" person (if we may dare to
use the word "mere"), but a violent attack on everything the person "represents." Thus, public figures,
officials, national symbols, when attacked, strike fear in all, because they make us aware that the
"rules of the game" by which we live may be under siege.
Of course, we need to remember that Pope Francis said the same thing at the beginning of World
Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, when meeting with Argentine Pilgrims. "I want to tell you something," Francis said, "Do you want to know what I want to happen as a result of World Youth Day?
Quiero lío. I want havoc." Not only at the cathedral, but in Rio, also in the dioceses, indeed the Church
needs, he said, "to get out into the street ... avoid everything that speaks of worldliness, of comfort, of
clericalism, of being closed in on ourselves. The parishes, the schools, the institutions – these are all
places to go out from ..." Some church news agencies didn't know how to translate what the pope had
said; one rendered it as, "I want to create a mess"! (Cfr Austen Ivereigh, The Great Reformer, Henry
Holt and Company, NY, 2014, 45-46.
When you stop to think about it, he was not far off track. What if my life is pretty humdrum, or maybe even humdrum in the sense of an energetic pursuit of wealth or status or hedonistic enjoyment,
which, if it keeps me "busy" enough, will also dull me against the pain that will eventually surface anyway, of "Why am I doing all this? What does it amount to?" I can seem active, self-confident, even
admirable in my single-mindedness and achievements, in terms of worldly measurements. But inside,
in the words of last Sunday's first reading from Qoheleth, maybe the truth is that it is all, "Vanity of
vanities ... all is vanity, and a chase after wind."
So then, what happens when someone comes along, crossing my path, who has none of the
things, or cares for none of the things that I obsess about, as pegs on which I hang my identity, as
"someone" because I have "X or Y or Z, or at least more of X or Y or Z than So-and-So." In a nonverbal way, their very existence challenges my sense of self, the purpose of my whole life project.
What I consider "worthwhile," they consider "worthless." And if they are right, then who am I? what am
I? am I?
Such is the witness given by those who are obviously filled with profound joy, the joy that comes
from hearing the Gospel message, and who are ready to, or have already in a visible way, "left all" to
follow Jesus? They have a peacefulness, a serenity, a sureness anchored in something that is very
Other, and are unencumbered by the thousands of things, big and little, that are "out of control," or
"outside my own control," that cause me anxiety and stress and a seething anger, born from an
unacknowledged awareness that I indeed cannot succeed in my misguided life project. To some extent
it must be admitted that this witness of "joy" and to the "gospel" has been conveyed in a major way
through the centuries by those who embraced the evangelical counsels of voluntary poverty, chastity,
and obedience for the sake of the glory of God, and in various, sometimes heroic, ways, showed a
near miraculous asceticism (rivaling the discipline of Olympic athletes). Their simple faith, hope, and
charity toward those "on the periphery" (as so often witnessed in the lives of the saints), wreaks
"havoc, chaos" in our lives, and may lead to the "chaotic dismantling" of the empty framework of a selfcentered life, and nurture us to build from scratch a new, worthy, satisfying life of right relationship to
self, others, and God: one in which joy, peace, security (even in adversity) characterize us, because
we are anchored in God. This the "chaos" Pope Francis wants the youth of the world, and all of us, to
set loose in the world.
