Richard Huneger On June 3, Pope Francis decreed that henceforth July 22, the liturgical "Memorial" of St Mary Magdalene, is elevated to "Feast" of St Mary Magdalene. On a "Feast" one recites the Gloria. The highest rank, that of "Solemnity" (such as Christmas), includes a second reading, and Profession of Faith as well as Gloria. Since "Feasts" are generally only of the Apostles and Mary, some were puzzled by the papal decision. But he felt that Mary Magdalene reflects the "Joy of the Gospel" (the New Evangelization) in taking the good news of the Resurrection to the apostles, for which she was titled in the Middle Ages the "apostolorum apostola" (the apostles' “Blessed are the poor in apostle). She also reflects, in her generous discipleship, and willingness to "stand spirit, for theirs is the by" Jesus even in danger, at Calvary (along with other women, at a distance from kingdom of heaven.” the cross), the love that we can see in people who have been shown "mercy" in their lives. By "mercy" is not meant an attitude of "Ah, not to worry" relative to some, even desperate, disorder, but rather a "power" by which someone who is enslaved becomes someone who is liberated. Pope Francis' motto is "miserando atque eliIn Our Parish gendo" ("commiserating in someone's wretchedness, and then electing him to Baptism—Rite of Christian greatness"). It is the Old Testament foundational experience of deliverance from Initiation slavery in Egypt, to the freedom of the Promised Land: God describes himself thus – Daniel Williamson "I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, that place Aneliya G. Gutierrez-Ramirez of bondage; thou shalt not have strange gods before me." God's relation to us has something to do with becoming truly "free." Rule 1: Don't get enslaved! Wedding—Rite of Mary Magdalene was one of the women who followed Jesus and the Apostles, Christian Marriage Billy Gutierrez and supported them out of their means (Luke 8:1-3). From "Magdala" (a city in Gali& lee on the west shore of the Sea of Galilee), she had "seven demons" (was "full of Jessica Navarro the dickens," the English word "dickens" coming from the German "Teufelchen," meaning "little devil"). It could mean anything from puzzling phenomena associated Funeral—Rite of with mental illness to profound moral waywardness. Mary Magdalene, and others, Christian Burial Helen Wruck took "spices" to "anoint" Jesus' body after his death. There are two other Mary figures who also were involved with "anointing." St. Joseph Parish Religious Education “St. Joseph’s Dream” Fresco In 2010 Father Todd Molinari began the process to have a fresco done of, “The Dream of St. Joseph”. This fresco was to depict a scene in the Gospel in which St. Joseph, after having discovered that Mary was with child decides to divorce her until the dream. In St. Joseph’s dream, an angel of the Lord appears revealing to him that the child was conceived of the Holy Spirit and that he is to take Mary as his wife. The mural depicts Joseph dreaming, the angel revealing, the marriage nuptials between St. Joseph and the Blessed Mother. Before leaving St. Joseph Parish in 2014, Father Todd wrote a letter of reflections and farewell. The following is an excerpt from that letter, which is a great reminder to all of us the extreme importance of Sacred art in our churches: “The installation of sacred art in the form of a fresco mural may seem to some to be a waste of resources that could be better used with the school or assisting the poor. The parish certainly takes its ministerial mandate to formation of youth and works of mercy as central to her life, but we need to remember that the first priority in practicing our Catholic Faith is to offer adoration and praise in the form of Sacred Liturgy of Almighty God. The implementation of various forms of the scared arts – from excellent Sacred Music to well-crafted homilies to well-executed liturgies to the installation of Sacred Art in our churches – is a primary and basic expression of our Faith and taking seriously absolute priority of worshipping God in Sacred Liturgy, and which is the foundation for all the works of charity and mercy that the Church provides.” On August 17, 2016 a benefit dinner will be held at Illahe to assist in raising the final funds needed to see “St. Joseph’s Dream” become a reality in our parish. Tickets are $100.00 per person. If you are interested in attending this event, or would like additional information, please contact Teri Martinez at (503) 581-1623.
