Buffalo returns 23 players, including eight starters to an offense that scored 220 points in 2006. It was the most points scored in a season since moving to Division I-A. In addition, the 201 points scored in conference play were the most of any team in the Mid-American Conference’s East Division. Buffalo returns even more experience on the defensive side of the ball as 31 players, including nine starters return on defense. Here’s a look by position at what Gill and his staff will be evaluating this spring: Junior Drew Willy (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) returns for his third season as the Bulls’ starting quarterback. Willy started the first eight games of the season before missing the final four games with a thumb injury. He has fully recovered from the injury and will look to improve on his already impressive numbers since taking the quarterbacking job as a true freshman in 2005. Willy finished 138-for-231 for 1,391 yards and six touchdowns last fall. He only threw six interceptions in 231 attempts. He didn’t throw an interception in his first 131 attempts and was the last remaining starting quarterback in the nation to throw an interception. Willy had his best game of the season against Ball State when he went 27-of-40 for 321 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 321 yards were a career high and the two touchdowns tied his career best. His performance versus Ball State marked the first time in four years that a UB quarterback eclipsed the 300-yard plateau in passing. With the departure of seniors, Tony Paoli and Stewart Sampsel, Willy is the Bulls’ lone returning quarterback for spring drills. With that in mind, Gill has decided to move sophomore Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate) from wide receiver to quarterback, where the former Western New York Player of the Year starred in high school. Roosevelt was the New York State large school and Buffalo News co-Player of the Year after amassing a staggering 3,452 all-purpose yards as a senior and set a Western New York record by throwing 35 touchdown passes in just 10 games. “There is competition at this position,” Gill said. “Drew is the starter going in and Naaman will have his chance to DREW WILLY NAAMAN ROOSEVELT Offense Quarterback 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS battle it out.” Running Back Even with a plethora of experienced running backs on the roster in 2006, James Starks (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was the back that made the biggest impact last season. With the departure of three seniors, he will be relied on to carry much of the load in the Bulls’ backfield in 2007. Last year, he led Buffalo with 704 yards on 175 carries and scored six touchdowns and was named second-team All-Mid-American Conference. Starks became the first UB freshman to earn All-League honors and just the sixth Buffalo player to earn secondteam honors in the school’s eight-year association with the MAC. He was also named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America Honorable Mention Team. Da’Von McCune (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) is the only other returning tailback that saw action last season. He had three carries, including one for 10 yards at Auburn. Redshirt freshman Brandon Thermilus (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus) who returns from an injury and sophomore Mario Henry (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) will add depth to the backfield. Chris Scharon (Salem, NH/Salem) and Ike Nduka (White Plains, NY/White JAMES STARKS SPRING PREVIEW FOOTBALL Plains) will battle for time at fullback after splitting time at the position last season. “We need to find depth at the running back position,” Gill said. “At fullback we need someone to step into the starting role.” Wide Receiver The wide receiver position is one of the areas in which the Bulls return the most experience. Buffalo returns five receivers that caught at least seven passes last season. Leading the way is Terrance Breaux (Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) who is the Bulls’ top returning receiver. The senior wideout led all UB wide receivers last year with 32 catches and 444 yards receiving. His best game of the season came at Northern Illinois where he had eight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. It was his second 100-yard receiving performance of his career making him only the fourth UB receiver to have multiple 100-yard receiving games since the Bulls returned to Division I-A in 1999. Although he will see time at quarterback this spring, coach Gill knows that he has a reliable option at receiver in Roosevelt. As a freshman, Roosevelt hauled in 31 balls for 429 yards and two scores. He ranked second on the team, averaging 35.8 yards per game receiving. He had seven catches for 72 yards and a touchdown against Ball State and seven catches for 53 yards at Akron. Junior Ernest Jackson (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) played in all 12 games last season and had 11 receptions for 162 yards. He had five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown against Ball State. His 14.7 yards-per-catch average was second best on the team. Junior Gary Rice (Hamilton, OH/ Hamilton) made a seamless transition from defensive back to wide receiver last season. Although his season was cut short with an injury, he did have nine catches for 64 yards over five games. Brett Hamlin (Jupiter, FL/William T. Dwyer) had seven catches over the first three games before missing the remainder of the season with a foot injury. He has recovered from the setback and looks to return to form from his freshman campaign. As a freshman, Hamlin led all UB receivers with 38 catches for 371 yards. Sophomore Alex Pierre (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and junior Brad JAMEY RICHARD Beggs (Clarion, PA/Clarion-Limestone) each saw action last season and will add depth and experience to the receiving corps. “We need to find the two starters and at least two others who can make plays,” Gill said. Tight Ends Finding a replacement for four-year starter Chad Upshaw will be a top priority for coach Gill. Junior Robert Yealu (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) and sophomore Jesse Rack (Maspeth, NY/ Christ the King) saw extensive time on the field last season and should be ready to move into a starting role. Yealu had six catches for 97 yards last season. His 16.2 yards-per-catch average was tops on the team. Rack had a pair of catches for 15 yards. He hauled in an eight-yard touchdown reception against Miami (OH). Kyle Brey (Granger, IN/Penn), who sat out last season as a redshirt, will add depth at tight end. as will redshirt junior Bryan Kisabeth (Plymouth, MI/Divine Child), who returns from an injury suffered at the end of spring ball last year. “Our goal is to find a starter to replace Chad Upshaw as we have quality people returning,” Gill said. ing offensive linemen that started at least five games in 2006. Anchoring the line will be center Jamey Richard (Weston, CT/Weston). The senior center has started 23 straight games over the last two seasons and is an All-MAC caliber player. Junior Jeff Niedermier (New Washington, OH/Buckeye Central) started every game at right guard a season ago and has started 18 straight games dating back to his freshman campaign. Junior Ray Norell (Monroe, CT/Masuk) showed his versatility last season by starting the first five games at left tackle before starting the final seven games at left guard. Midway through the 2006 season, Jordan Jerrold (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) was promoted to the starting left tackle spot. Although only Brian a freshman, he started the final seven games of the season and helped reduce Watson the Bulls’ sack total considerably. Prior to Jerrold entering the starting lineup, Buffalo was allowing four sacks per game. However, once Jerrold became a starter, opponent’s sack total dropped to 2.7 per game. Junior Jon Geddes (Colonie, NY/ Colonie) started five games at left guard last season and will likely battle for a starting role in 2007. Senior Jon Burgio (Clarence, NY/ Clarence), junior Chris Lauzze (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke) and sophomore Matt Bacoulis (Des Plaines, IL/Maine East) all saw action as reserves last season and will have an opportunity for Offensive Line The Bulls return four of their starting five offensive linemen from a season ago. All told, the Bulls have five return- 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS TREVOR SCOTT SPRING PREVIEW FOOTBALL OLLICE ERVIN more playing time in 2007. Senior Travis Coughlin (Royal Oak, MI/Bishop Foley), who played in several games as a sophomore, will return after sitting out last season and should be in the mix at tackle. Sophomore Andrew West (Croswell, MI/Croswell-Lexington) and redshirt-freshmen Brian Kelly (Richmond, VA/Monacan) and Peter Bittner (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) will add depth to an already experienced line. “We have an experienced offensive line,” Gill said. “We are evaluating primarily for a starting right tackle but there is competition at other positions for starting spots, too.” all 12 games, splitting time between the defensive end and defensive tackle position. He totalled 27 tackles, including five for a loss. His three sacks ranked second on the team. Junior Ronald Hilaire (Laval, Quebec/Vieux) started eight games at defensive tackle. He totaled 20 tackles, including 10 solo efforts and a sack. He added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Senior Labinot Hakanjin (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton), junior Mike Thompson (Seffner, FL/Armwood) and sophomores Dane Robinson (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) and Anel Montanez (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) each saw time in the starting lineup and will battle for starting jobs in 2007. Junior Andrae Smith (Bloomfield, CT/Bloomfield) hopes to return after missing more than a season due to injuries. “Our need is to find starters at the defensive tackles positions who can penetrate the line of scrimmage,” Gill said. “We believe Trevor is an All-MAC player going into the season. We must find a starter at the other defensive end position and depth at both sides.” Linebackers Buffalo suffered two of its biggest losses at the linebacker position with the departure of seniors Jeff Bublavi and Ramon Guzman. “The defensive unit will miss Bublavi and Guzman,” Gill said. “This position will Defense Defensive Line Like the offensive line, the Bulls will return a much-experience defensive line. Every player that started a game at defensive line will return in 2007. Leading the way will be defensive end Trevor Scott (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam). The senior captain proved what a versatile athlete he is by making the move from tight end to defensive end in 2006. All he did in his first season on the defensive line was record nine sacks - the most by any player in Buffalo’s Division IA history. He added 45 tackles, including a team-best 13.5 tackles for loss. Senior James Judges (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary’s Secondary) started KENDRIC HAWKINS need players to step up. Every position is open to be taken by anyone.” The Bulls do have one returning starter at linebacker in Ollice Ervin (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach). The UB senior started 11 games last season and ranked second on the team and 11th in the MAC with 96 tackles. He added three pass break-ups and an interception. Also returning is Tom Drewes (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) who had a solid freshman campaign. The Milford Prep product played in nine games and totalled 11 tackles. He earned the start against Ball State after he had five tackles, including four solo stops at Auburn. Senior Larry Hutchinson (Seattle, WA/Fanklin) split time between linebacker and defensive lineman and had 10 tackles, including 10 solos, in seven games. Junior David Hubbard (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) and sophomore Chris Storr (Southfield, MI/Southfield) amassed 11 and 10 tackles, respectively, in reserve roles. Seniors LaRon Haymore (St. Louis, MO/Cardinal Ritter) and Todd Robertson (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) as well as sophomore Chris Callahan (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) played linebacker in a reserve role last year and will get the opportunity to challenge for a starting spot in 2007. Callahan also spent some time as a rush defensive end and recorded a sack. Defensive Backs KAREEM BYROM 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS The defensive backfield is coach Gill’s SPRING PREVIEW FOOTBALL most experienced unit. The Bulls return all four starters as well as three reserves that saw significant action last season. Leading the way is safety Kareem Byrom (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick). Last season, the senior captain ranked third on the team in tackles with 88 and his nine tackles for loss ranked second on the team. His four forced fumbles tied him for second in the MAC. Byrom’s importance to this team was best exemplified when he was asked to move from the defensive backfield to linebacker when the Bulls were hit with some injuries. In Byrom’s first career game at linebacker, he had seven tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack at nationally-ranked Boston College. He followed that performance with a 10tackle, 2.5 tackle for loss outing against Kent State. Senior Jesse Imes (Cincinnati, OH/ Kings Mills) split time between safety and cornerback last season. Although, he has more experience at the safety spot with 14 career starts. Imes ranked seventh on the team in tackles with 48. He best asset was having a nose for the ball as he tied a school record with four fumble recoveries on the year. A pair of freshmen made some of the most significant impact on the defensive side of the ball as Kendric Hawkins (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) and Mike Newton (Pasadena, MD/Calvert Hall) played more like seasoned veterans. Hawkins started 11 games and ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 70. He added eight tackles for loss and a sack. He had a team-best five pass breakups and a pair of interceptions. He saved his interceptions for the national stage as he had pick against Auburn and Boston College - both nationally-ranked teams. Hawkins was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America Honorable Mention Team. Newton started nine games at safety and led the Bulls and tied for first in the MAC in interceptions with five. The five picks were the most by a UB player since Mark Graham had six in 2002 and the second-highest total since the Bulls returned to Division I-A in 1999. He also totaled 60 tackles, including four for a loss. Another young duo that contributed last season was that of freshman Sherrod Lott (Plant City, FL/Plant City) and sophomore Keon Perry (Brunswick, GA/Brunswick). Lott started six games at corner. He had 33 tackles, including 22 of the solo variety. Perry played in 10 games and started one and finished the year with eight tackles. Junior Andre Evans (Cleveland, OH/ Glenville) started the final three games of the season at cornerback last season. He had nine tackles in the seven games in which he played. Senior Ronald Sears (Brooklyn, NY/ New Utrecht) and junior Gerald Jackson (Alexandria, VA/DeMatha Catholic) add depth to the defensive backfield. “This is the most experienced part of our defense,” Gill said. “All starters are back and they will be working to improve technique and tackling,” Special Teams Senior Ben Woods (Hermitage, PA/ Hickory) returns for his fourth year as the Bulls’ starting punter. He has been a reliable weapon over his career and as he enters his final season will likely finish his career sitting atop the UB record book in every punting category. Last season, Woods averaged 37.9 yards per punt. He had 13 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and six fair catches. Woods also handled the majority of the kick-off duties. He had five touchbacks on the season. With the graduation of Adam Tanalski and the departure of Taylor Packwood, who left the team for personal reasons, the kicking duties will lie on the shoulders of junior Gerry McGroarty (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Bishop Hoban) heading into the spring. McGroarty didn’t see any action last year, but did convert 2of-5 field goal attempts, including a 46yarder, in 2005. “Punter Ben Woods is solid,” Gill said. “Gerry McGroarty will have a chance to see if he is the kicker.” The kick return game was an area in which Buffalo struggled in recent years. That was until Naaman Roosevelt arrived on campus. As a freshman, Roosevelt set the school record for single-season kickoff return (25.9 ypr). On the first kickoff return of his career, Roosevelt darted 94 yards up the center of the field for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff return for a score by the Bulls since October 14, 1989, a span of 178 games. However, if Roosevelt catches on as a quarterback, Gill may have to look elsewhere for a return man. “Kick returners and punt returners will need to be found this spring if Naaman becomes the QB,” Gill said. “We need to secure our punt protection.” 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS Returning Lettermen LB LB DB OL LB DE P/K Three Letters (7) Ollice Ervin ____________ Sr. LaRon Haymore ________ Sr. Jesse Imes _____________ Sr. Jamey Richard _________ Sr. Todd Robertson ________ Sr. Trevor Scott____________ Sr. Ben Woods ____________ Sr. WR WR DB DB OL LB DB OL WR DL WR DE OL OL WR FB DB DE QB TE Two Letters (20) Brad Beggs ____________ Jr. Terrance Breaux ________ Sr. Kareem Byrom _________ Sr. Jamal Chisam __________ Jr. Travis Coughlin _________ Jr. Chris Callahan __________ Jr. Andre Evans ___________ Jr. Jon Geddes ____________ Jr. Brett Hamlin ___________ Jr. Ronald Hilaire __________ Jr. Ernest Jackson _________ Jr. James Judges __________ Sr. Jeff Niedermier _________ Jr. Ray Norell _____________ Jr. Gary Rice ______________ Jr. Chris Scharon __________ Jr. Ronald Sears ___________ Sr. Andrae Smith __________ Sr. Drew Willy _____________ Jr. Robert Yealu ___________ Jr. One Letter (29) OL OL LB LB DL RB DB LB LB OL DB DB OL TE DL RB P/K DL FB DB WR DB DL TE DL DL RB DB DL Matt Bacoulis __________So. Gill made an immediate impact in his first year as he led the Bulls to a number of firsts. In 2006, Buffalo scored the most points in a season (220) since moving to Division I-A. UB also scored the most points (201) of any team in the MAC East Division and defeated the first team – Kent State – with a winning record since joining Mid-American Conference in 1999. Gill has reached the pinnacle of college football as both a player and a coach. Now he has accepted the challenge of lifting Buffalo’s fledgling Division I-A program to the level of excellence that he has embodied as both a player and coach. Gill, who was part of three national championships as a coach at the University of Nebraska and a Heisman Trophy finalist as a player, agreed to a five-year contract to become the 23rd head football coach at the University at Buffalo on December 16, 2005. Gill, 44, who spent the 2005 season serving as Player Development Director and Offensive Assistant with the Green Bay Packers, was lauded as one of the nation’s top recruiters while an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004. The Cornhuskers won national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997 during that span. Gill, who was selected following a national search, brings with him tremendous success as both a player and coach. Consider how few head coaches in America can claim to have: • As a player, to have never lost a conference game as a starter; to have led his team to the national championship game and to have been a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (won by his teammate). • As a coach, to be on the sidelines for three national championships and to have coached an individual who won the Heisman Trophy. “I am extremely excited to be able to bring a person of Turner’s caliber - not only as a coach but as a person - to the University at Buffalo,” said Warde Manuel, UB’s Director of Athletics. “He is a man of great integrity, he has a tremendous football pedigree, and is a proven winner. Turner has all the tools necessary to bring great pride to our football program in the future, and I can’t wait to get started with what I think will be a very exciting chapter in Bulls’ football history.” UB President John B. Simpson said that “from my conversations with Turner Gill, and from what I know of his impressive experience and proven leadership, it’s clear to me that he is an individual who understands at a deep level what excellence is -- and understands what it will take to achieve it, both on and off the field.” Simpson said the fact that Gill will head up the university’s football program “is great news for UB, marking not just an important step forward in our continuing work to build a strong, competitive athletic program, but also a key outcome of our university-wide commitment to institutional excellence.” During his tenure at Nebraska, Gill served as an assistant coach for College Football Hall of Famer Tom Osborne, current Ohio University head coach Frank Solich and current Nebraska mentor Bill Callahan. He tutored the Huskers’ quarterbacks from 1992-2002, was named assistant head football coach in 2003, and served as wide receivers coach in 2004. “I am honored and privileged to be a part of a great team with President John Simpson and Warde Manuel,” said Gill. “They are tremendous people and I know the University at Buffalo has great leadership with them in place. I sincerely thank both of them for giving me this opportunity. “When I talked to people about Warde, they had nothing but high regard for him as a person and as an athletic director,” said Gill. “He has created an excitement on campus and in the community. I want to be a part of this special time at this institution. Warde has that drive and determination that brings out excellence in other people. Our football staff will help him to deliver that excitement to Western New York, the rest of New York State, and hopefully, the rest of the country.” In speaking about his expectations for his team, Gill said: “We are going to be a team where each person believes in himself, his teammates, his coaches, and the people of this institution. We will be a family that will dedicate ourselves to excellence, balance, and growth. It is one of our main goals to make sure that these young men truly enjoy the college football experience. “It is our intention to build a team that will be physical and attacking on both sides of the ball, as well as on special teams. Not only will the experience be great for the players, but we will entertain the students and the fans as well,” said Gill. During the height of Nebraska football in the 1990s, with Gill serving as quarterbacks coach, the Cornhuskers had unprecedented success at both the quarterback position and as a team. Gill - rated one of the top ten recruiters in the nation in 2000 and 2001 by ESPN.com - played a vital role in Nebraska’s three national titles, and mentored a string of record-breaking quarterbacks, from Tommie Frazier to Jamaal Lord to 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. Crouch, Frazier and Lord rank as the top three total career offense leaders in Nebraska history (while Gill, himself, ranks eighth). Crouch won the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award (top player in the nation) and the Davey O’Brien Award (nation’s top quarterback) as well as being a first-team All-American in 2001 under Gill’s tutelage. Frazier was also a first-team All-American, Johnny Unitas Award winner and Heisman Trophy finalist in 1995, and led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships (1994-95). Both Fraizer and Crouch were tabbed as Big 12 Offensive Players of the Year. Gill also mentored a pair of Big 12 Conference Offensive Newcomers of the Year in Frazier and Scott Frost (1996). Frost would lead Nebraska to another national title in 1997. In 2002, he was nominated and among the finalists for the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in the nation. He was regarded by several sources as one of the top recruiters in the nation. “Turner is an outstanding human being,” said former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne, a member of the College Football Hall of Famer and one of the Gill History Year 2006-present 2005 1992-2004 1991 School Buffalo Green Bay Packers Nebraska Assignment Head Coach Player Development Dir./Offensive Asst. He’s a great family man, an excellent recruiter, he relates well to his players and he really works well with people. He’ll always represent the program well. He is very knowledege as far as football goes. I have nothing but the greatest admiration for him.” Before accepting the job at Buffalo, Gill served as the direct liaison to players and their families as the Player Development Director. He also served as an offensive assistant, with a focus on wide receivers. He began his coaching career at Southern Methodist University as receivers coach in 1991. Gill’s outstanding coaching career mirrors a memorable playing career that culminated with him being named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 1983 (finishing fourth behind teammate Mike Rozier) and earning a berth on the All-Decade Big Eight team (1980-89) as the starting quarterback. Gill, a native of Fort Worth, TX, was the starting quarterback at Nebraska from 1981-83 and led the team to a No. 2 and No. 3 national ranking. Overall, Nebraska teams had a 28-2 overall record with Gill as the starting quarterback and a 20-0 record in Big Eight conference play. He is the 12th winningest QB in NCAA Div. I history. He spent two seasons as quarterback of the Montreal Concordes of the Canadian Football League, leading his team to playoff berths in 1984 and 1985. One of the most respected student-athletes in Nebraska athletics history, Gill earned the Tom Novak Award for Outstanding Leaadership and Character as well as the Herbert Marshall Award for leadership. He has been inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, was a three-time All Big Eight selection, and was the MVP of the Orange Bowl and Kickoff Classic. A multi-talented athlete, Gill also spent three seasons in the minor league systems of the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. He’s a great family man, an excellent recruiter, he relates well to his players and he really works well with people. He’ll always represent the program well. His knowledge of football, the reads, audibles, etc., he made the game easier. He is very honest and upfront with you. He told me the truth, whether I was playing good or bad. He has great people skills and he truly cared about his players on and off the field. He truly was a great teacher.” --Tommie Frazier Head coach, Doane College Quarterback, Nebraska National Champions (1994-95) “The player/coach relationship was a lot easier for me to accept because Turner was a player - one of the most successful quarterbacks to ever play the game - and he had been through it. That was such a big part of my development. He’s a guy you can talk to about anything and he has a great approach on life. I think that’s very important for young athletes. He’s a tremendous competitor, he will prepare his players like no one else. It was an amazing feeling to have him as a coach... I felt head and shoulders above the competition in terms of being prepared for the game. He’s a guy that will touch a lot of people’s lives through coaching.” --Eric Crouch Nebraska, ‘02 2001 Heisman Trophy Winner “I was with him all five years when I was at Nebraska. He’s coming to Buffalo from Green Bay so he’s obviously a guy that knows how to coach and he’s been around and on a lot of winning teams. From what I saw of Turner at Nebraska he’s a man of integrity. He’s a family man and he cares for his players and he expects a lot out of his players, just like a lot was expected out of him when he was a player. He’ll do a great job at the University at Buffalo.” --Chris Kelsay Defensive end, Buffalo Bills Nebraska, ’02 National Football Foundation/College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete “Thomas Drewes, incoming freshman, knows all about his new coach, ongoing college football legend. Who wouldn’t know about the quarterback of one of the greatest offenses of all time? Turner Gill was a Heisman finalist, 28-2 as a starter, the Vince Young of his day...The Buffalo administration is counting on this from the PlayStation generation of recruits: Kids might not remember Gill, but they remember the quarterback greats he coached at Nebraska -- Heisman winner Eric Crouch and Tommie Frazier. --Dennis Dodd CBS Sportsline “If there are a couple of traits that define Gill as a coach, they are his positive energy and unyielding optimism. Talk to Gill one-on-one, and you somehow feel energized. If you’re down, he can pick you up in minutes. He has that extraord nary gift.” –– Steven M. Williams also served an internship with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004. Williams was one of the greatest defensive players in Nebraska history after walking on to the team from Washington, D.C. A firstteam All-American at Nebraska as a defensive end, Williams was chosen in the first round (15th overall) of the 1982 draft and played nine seasons with the Detroit Lions (1982-90), one with Minnesota and his final two with Tampa Bay in 1992-93. After his playing career ended, Williams coached at Pontiac Northern High School, serving as defensive coordinator and was head coach at Pontiac Central HS for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. He notes that “UB offers the student-athlete a multitude of opportunities. Its variety of excellent resources equips the student-athlete with the ability to excel academically, competitively and personally, through the development of character.” He and his wife Crystal are the parents of six children (Brittney, 19, Nia, 16, Faith, 10, Joy, 9, Janell, 8 and Jimmy, 8). ANGUS MCCLURE OFFENSIVE LINE/RUN COORDINATOR SECOND YEAR AT BUFFALO SACRAMENTO STATE, ’95 Angus McClure returns for his second season as the Bulls’ offensive line coach and run coordinator. In his first season with the Bulls, his run scheming helped the development of freshman running back James Starks, who was named second-team All-MAC selection - the first time a UB freshman earned All-League honors. McClure came to Buffalo after serving as an assistant on Bill Callahan’s Nebraska staff. McClure coached the tackles at Nebraska in 2005 as well as serving in several special teams roles as well. Prior to his stint at Nebraska, McClure played a major role in 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS COACHING STAFF FOOTBALL record-breaking offenses at Sacramento State University where he served as assistant head coach and offensive line coach. While at Sacramento State from 1997-2003, McClure helped the Hornets set 52 NCAA Division I-AA, Big Sky Conference or school records. He coached 20 All Big Sky conference honorees and had six of his pupils sign NFL contracts. In addition, five Sacramento State players earned All-American status and four were chosen to participate in college all-star games. In his seven seasons at Sacramento State, the Hornets led the Big Sky in rushing yards four times. McClure also spent one season at the University of Nevada (1996), helping the Wolfpack to the Big West title, a 9-3 record and the Las Vegas Bowl championship. That year, the Wolfpack led Division I-A with 527.3 yards per game and were tops in both rushing and passing in the Big West. A graduate of Sacramento State, where he played football from 1987-91, McClure also served as a faculty member there from 19972004. He began his coaching career at McClatchy HS in Sacremento as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1992-95. He and his wife Erin have two sons, Hamish (8) and Malcolm (3). BRIAN MOHNSEN LINEBACKERS SECOND YEAR AT BUFFALO NEBRASKA, ’91 Brian Mohnsen begins his second season at Buffalo. He will make the move from linebackers coach to defensive ends coach in 2007. As linebackers coach in 2006, his impact was seen immediately in his first season as the Bulls top three leaders in the tackles per game category were all linebackers. Mohnsen came to UB after serving as the defensive line coach at Minnesota State-Mankato. In 2004, he was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern Oklahoma State, leading the defense to a second place ranking nationally in total defense and pass defense, third in rushing defense and fifth in scoring defense. Mohnsen spent 12 years at Nebraska (1992-2003), serving as director of the Cornhuskers’ video scouting department while assisting with gameday management for both home and away games. During the 1991 season, Mohnsen started in his career as an undergraduate coach working with the defensive linemen and linebackers at Nebraska, while also performing student teaching duties. From 1987-90, Mohnsen was a member of the Cornhusker football program as a defensive end and a linebacker, earning a varsity letter during his senior year. A native of McCook, NE, he graduate from Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1991. He and his wife Kerri have a daughter named Madison (11). ALLEN MOGRIDGE RUNNING BACKS/RECRUITING COORDINATOR SIXTH YEAR AT BUFFALO NORTH CAROLINA, ’99 Allen Mogridge will once again coach the Bulls’ running backs, a position he has held the past three seasons, and will also serve as recruiting coordinator for head coach Turner Gill. In 2006, he coached freshman running back James Starks to a second-team All-MAC selection - the first time a UB freshman earned All-League honors. He rejoined the Buffalo coaching staff in February of 2004 after spending one season at Western Carolina as defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator. He had initially joined the staff at Buffalo in 2001 as a defensive graduate assistant coach. Mogridge had an excellent career at North Carolina, playing four different positions and earning the Kenan Award for Leadership in his senior season. He spent one year as strength and conditioning coach at UNC as well while pursuing his masters degree. He spent the summer of 2000 in the Carolina Panthers training camp before playing for one year in the Arena Football League with the Carolina Cobras. He rejoined the Buffalo coaching staff in February of 2004 after spending one season at Western Carolina as defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator. In his first stint at Buffalo he assisted all facets of the defense - helping the Bulls jump from near the bottom of total defense in the nation to 45th in 2001 - while focusing on the Bulls’ defensive linemen. The Severville, TN native married the former Jennifer Carpenter, and they have two daughters, Carter Olivia (Livi) (3) and newborn Isabella Grace. He enjoys music and the outdoors. The motto that reflects his life is: “Hard work, dedication, persistence and faith will take you far in life and football.” AARON STAMN TIGHT ENDS/SPECIAL TEAMS SECOND YEAR AT BUFFALO MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO, ’02 Aaron Stamn returns as UB’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. His efforts made an immediate impact as he led the special teams unit to one of its finest seasons in recent years. Under his tutelage, the special teams unit returned its first kick for a touchdown since 1989 and blocked five kicks - the most by a UB team since the 1996 season. Prior to coming to UB, Stamn spent the two seasons at Nebraska as a defensive assistant, working with Huskers’ defensive line with coach John Blake, and helping that unit lead the nation with 50 sacks in 2005 and an Alamo Bowl victory win over Michigan. That 2007 SPRING PROSPECTUS COACHING STAFF FOOTBALL sack figure is the second highest in Nebraska’s long and rich football history. Stamn came to Nebraska from St. Cloud State in Minnesota, where he served as a graduate assistant coach for two years (200203). In 2002, he assisted with the defensive line and outside linebackers as the Huskies ranked third in Division II in rush defense while posting a 9-2 record. In 2003, Stamn helped St. Cloud to a 7-4 record while coaching the linebackers. Stamn also served as a student assistant coach while earning his undergraduate degree in Physical Education at Minnesota StateMankato. He served as an offensive line assistant coach in 2000, while assisting with the defensive backs in 2001.
