SEED GUIDE
2015
W E S T E R N C O R N B E LT P E R F O R M A N C E
Dear friends,
Like the sodbusters who pioneered farming in the Western Corn Belt, both the people and products
at Hoegemeyer Hybrids are steadfast in advancing your farm’s success with that same drive and
determination. Through our own hard-earned years of experience, we have come to understand the
unique challenges and conditions faced by the growers we
serve. Through rigorous testing of our broad and diverse
germplasm base, plus access to the latest in trait technology
to protect the germplasm’s yield potential, we are confident
that our product portfolio will stand up to the challenges and
conditions of the Western Corn Belt and help you succeed.
While the seed industry has seen many changes over the
course of our 77-year history, our personalized service and
dedication to customer satisfaction remains the same. We
are blessed to have many customers who continue to plant
Hoegemeyer products from generation to generation, based
on their trust and belief in our products. As part of the fourth generation of the Hoegemeyer family
involved in the business, we remain committed to earning and maintaining that trust each and every
season. In strengthening that trust, providing the right advice and sound product recommendations is
every bit as important as the performance of our products, so customers like you get the most from the
seed we offer.
As in years past, I am excited about the offerings you’ll find in this product catalog. As farming
becomes more complex, we are working to offer you products with the benefit of simplicity. It’s
products like Optimum® AcreMax® XTreme, Optimum® AcreMax® Xtra and Optimum® AcreMax®, our
single-bag refuge products, that reduce the time you have to spend on stewardship management.
You’ll also find products with improved drought tolerance – denoted as Optimum® AQUAmax® hybrids.
These products are designed to make the most out of every drop of water by delivering performance
rain or shine. In addition, you’ll find outstanding soybean, sorghum and alfalfa products that are
specifically tested for Western Corn Belt Performance. Finally, I want to express my sincere gratitude
to you for trusting Hoegemeyer seed on your farm. It’s a big decision, and we are honored to serve
you each and every season.
Sincerely,
Stephan Becerra
General Manager, Hoegemeyer Hybrids

CHARACTERISTIC DEFINITIONS
Stress Emergence – Ability to emerge in stressful conditions associated
with early planting dates or heavy residue.
High Population Response – Likelihood of a yield benefit at aggressive
planting populations. Also takes into account standability at high populations.
Stalk Strength – Late-season stalk integrity.
Drydown – Rate at which grain loses moisture in the field after reaching
physiological maturity (black layer).
Root Strength – Ability to resist root lodging in the absence of Corn
Rootworm injury.
Brittle-Snap Tolerance – Resistance to cornstalk breakage from high
winds during periods of rapid plant growth.
Low Population Response – (Ear Flex) A hybrid’s ability to outyield other
hybrids at low populations.
Drought Stress – Ablity to maintain yields under drought stress.
10
Ethanol – Above-average fermentable starch content.
Food Grade – YES = Approved by one or more Food Grade processors,
YES** = Strong Food Grade potential, but not approved prior to publication
of the seed guide.
Silage MAX – Demonstrates above-average silage yield and/or quality.

IMPORTANT: Characteristic scores provide key
information useful in selecting and managing
products in your area. Information and ratings are
based on comparisons with other products sold
by Hoegemeyer.
Information and scores are assigned by
Hoegemeyer and are based on period-of-years
testing through 2013 harvest, and were the latest
available at time of printing. Some scores may
change after 2014 harvest. Scores represent an
average of performance data across areas of
adaptation, multiple growing conditions, and a
wide range of both climate and soil types, and
may not predict future results. Individual product
responses are variable and subject to a variety
of environmental, disease and pest pressures.
Please use this information as only one
component of your product positioning decision.

In 2011-2013 trials, Optimum AQUAmax products from PROaccess Genetics were grown in 404 non-irrigated research plots, on-farm strip test and on-farm side-by-sides with a win ratio of 70 percent across IA, SD, NE, KS, CO, MO and OK. Cumulative claim includes all 2011 and 2012 research
plots against competitive hybrids (+/- 5 CRM), on-farm strip plot (+/- 10 CRM) and on-farm side-by-side comparisons against one similar CRM commercial product. These same products demonstrated a 3.4 bushel advantage with a win ratio of 61 percent in 210 irrigated comparisons. Product
performance in non-irrigated environments is variable and depends on many factors such as the severity and timing of moisture deficiency, heat stress, soil type, management practices and environmental stress as well as disease and pest pressures. All hybrids may exhibit reduced yield under
water and heat stress. Individual results may vary.

Right Stand® Standard Corn Treatment
Right Stand Premium Corn Treatment Option
All corn hybrids distributed by Hoegemeyer will be
protected with Right Stand® corn treatment. Right Stand
is a combination of fungicide and insecticide applied
right on the seed. The fungicide portion protects against
seed-borne and soil-borne diseases like Pythium,
Fusarium, Aspergillius and Penicillium. The insecticide
portion provides early-season protection from a
host of secondary pests, such as Wireworm, Black
Cutworm, White Grub, and Seed Corn Maggot.
Poncho®/VOTiVO® 1250 is an optional nematicide and a
high rate Seed Applied Insecticide. It provides a broader
spectrum of secondary insect protection and some
primary insect protection. Secondary insect protection
includes some activity against corn rootworms for
refuge acres when planting Corn Rootworm resistant
hybrids. VOTiVO® protects against nematode damage.

IMPORTANT: Characteristic scores provide key information useful in selecting and managing products in your area. Information and ratings are based on comparisons with other products
sold by Hoegemeyer.
Information and scores are assigned by Hoegemeyer and are based on period-of-years testing through 2013 harvest, and were the latest available at time of printing. Some scores may
change after 2014 harvest. Scores represent an average of performance data across areas of adaptation, multiple growing conditions, and a wide range of both climate and soil types,
and may not predict future results. Individual product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease and pest pressures. Please use this information as only one
component of your product positioning decision.

AVOIDING NITRATE AND PRUSSIC ACID
POISONING IN SORGHUM
•
•
•
•
•
Avoid large nitrogen applications prior to expected drought periods, as this can increase prussic acid concentration
for several weeks after application.
Do not harvest drought-damaged plants within one week following a good rain.
Do not green chop within seven days of a killing frost.
Cut at a higher stubble height; nitrates tend to accumulate in the lower stalk.
Wait one month before feeding silage to give prussic acid enough time to escape.
Note: Chlorosis can be a problem when planting forage or sorghum x Sudangrass in soils with a pH greater than 7.5-8.0.

MEDIUM TO FULL MATURITY
FULL MATURITY
• Sterile forage primarily used for swathing
• Produces very palatable, juicy stalks
• Taller plant height
• Newest generation of BMR Forage Sorghum, that is a Brachytic Dwarf.
Shorter internode length for increased standability and still makes tonnage
of taller forages
• Benefits from lower stem lignin concentrations for high quality feed value
• Normally can be harvested 110 days after seeding. Protein content will
decline as harvest is delayed, but energy will increase upon heading
because of continued sugar formation in the plant
• Suggested planting rates of 4-8 pounds on dryland in rows and
7-10 pounds dryland when drilled; irrigated in rows should be
7-10 pounds, and 7-12 pounds with drill when drilled
• For top quality feed, swath when head is
in the boot stage
