One HomeFront Day
This past year, a significant time for HomeFront in so many ways, has also been a
beautiful example of what a community working together can accomplish and my
gratitude is boundless.
There is no such thing as a “typical day” at HomeFront!—yet while
each day is different, all of our days are filled with loving support,
Despite seeing a 28% increase in the number of homeless people who came to us,
donations were strong enough that we were able to offer shelter to those in need, feed
those who were hungry, keep children safe, happy and engaged day and night, and provide their parents with the educational and employment tools they needed for a better life. Every day, even
as the number of families we were helping increased, HomeFront staff and services rose to the challenge.

us on what could be the worst day of their lives, but they leave
with a home, a job, a working plan—and hope—for a future with
dignity and independence.
Government actions and policies have continued to hamper the construction of affordable housing; however, HomeFront has remained committed to creating permanent, quality housing in Mercer County for
people with modest incomes. I am happy to report that we added four new units of permanent affordable
housing this past year and currently have two projects in the pipeline for eight new dwellings in Hamilton.
The HomeFront experience is individualized to meet the needs of
each family who comes to us for help. Last year, we answered over
15,000 cries for help with shelter, food and hands-on emergency
aid. This year’s Annual Report is a representation of a small
portion of services, activities and triumphs, large and small, which
are changing lives 365 days a year. Here is one HomeFront day.

to end homelessness in Central New Jersey
by harnessing the caring, resources
and expertise of the community.
We lessen the immediate pain of homelessness
and help families become self-sufficient.
We work to give our clients the skills
and opportunities to ensure adequate incomes,
and we work to increase the availability
of adequate, affordable housing.
But the biggest “building” news is the creation of the new HomeFront Family Campus! Last fall, after a
seven-year, often complicated process, HomeFront received an 8.5 acre property in Ewing Township, a
decommissioned military base, free of charge from the Navy. This acquisition could not have come at
a more opportune time, as the State of New Jersey is planning to sell the property where our Family
Preservation Center is located. Not only we will now have our very
own permanent “home” for our shelter, we are seizing this
opportunity to create a total, one-stop social service campus. At
the new Campus, we will expand our services, like ArtSpace and
our job training and offer brand new programs that include a
teaching kitchen and a pilot 24-hour Childcare Center. Plus,
we will be able to remove even more of the barriers that can
derail a family’s success because community partners such as
Womanspace and Family Guidance will also have offices on-site.
We help homeless families advocate
for themselves individually and collectively.
While this Annual Report is our thank you to all who helped us over the past twelve months, this year’s
theme highlights just one day. I think this is appropriate (and I know my staff would agree with me)
because HomeFront has always been in the very intense business of crisis and renewal, where there is no
“business as usual” day, ever. And, as I look back over the last 24 years of this amazing journey and the
rich variety of all those days, one thing that stands out in sharp relief are the moments with friends,
supporters and volunteers—all of you out in the community who truly have made this work possible.

Moms and children smile as the bright yellow Cherry Tree Club bus pulls up in
front of the Family Preservation Center to take the waiting children to HomeFront’s
and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s award-winning preschool. Danisha can’t
wait to get to school because she is going to sing a song she learned to the whole
class today!
HomeFront is committed to making sure that the children of
families in crisis stay on track with their education. Last year,
HomeFront offered academic support to 637 children, from
preschool to high school.

When Janelle came to HomeFront, she didn't think she had a future. An abusive
boyfriend had always called her stupid and she thought she was. As she began
learning about computers, she was surprised at how much she enjoyed those classes.
She is the first one to log on in the morning because Miss Lynne doesn’t like lateness. Now she knows that one day she will have a job.
Last year, 345 clients increased their computer literacy and job
readiness through comprehensive computer training classes.

With the help of the Hire Expectations team, Cathy has a job interview coming up
and she wants to present herself professionally. This morning she is visiting the
FreeStore where a carefully arranged assortment of donated clothing for people of
all ages is available for free. The Suitably Dressed department has a selection of
“business wear” that will make Cathy look and feel her best during her interview.
Once she secures a job, the FreeStore will allow her to choose seven work outfits.
Thanks to local donors, 3,673 qualified heads of household came
to the FreeStore last year and picked out—at no charge—clothing
and household items they would not be able to afford otherwise.

10:48 a.m. – A JOB CHANGES THE FUTURE
HomeFront client Denise came to the Hire Expectations team for help after the store
where she worked closed. Losing the job was a serious setback. As she struggled to
find another job, she realized she lacked confidence in her abilities. The HomeFront
team coached her, helped her re-write her resume to highlight her experience, provided her with an interview outfit and circulated her resume throughout the area.
Today, her new employer called her at HomeFront with the good news.
Last year, HomeFront’s Hire Expectations program helped 251
people become proud, productive members of the community by
providing employment training and helping them find jobs—jobs
they now have the skills to keep.

Food stamp cuts coupled with skyrocketing food costs have put many people with
low-paying jobs desperately in need of HomeFront food assistance to feed their
families. Often the lines of people, each looking to receive a bag of nutritious food,
will stretch out the doors and down the street.
HomeFront distributes approximately 1,000 food bags to those in
need, each and every month, year round.

1:12 P.M. – RENT CRISIS INTERVENTION
When Tasha became ill and lost her local supermarket job, she quickly fell two months
behind on her rent. She has found a new job but she can not make up the rent, and
the landlord said she and her daughters have to leave by the end of the month. Tasha
asked HomeFront for help and her landlord will be mailed a check today.
Thanks to HomeFront’s homelessness prevention team—and our
small “pot” of emergency funds—731 families were spared the
trauma of homelessness last year.

been fundamental in establishing and maintaining
life-changing programs for our families.
2:03 P.M. – A GOOD START TO A NEW LIFE
When Anna came to HomeFront she was sick and hungry and afraid that she and the
child she was carrying would die. Anna just returned from her check-up at the
doctor’s office and, after the two months of good food and nurturing care she has
received at Huchet House, was told she and her baby are thriving. Anna can’t wait to
hold her healthy baby in her arms.
In Mercer County there are over 900 homeless children and the
largest group is babies under age one. Huchet House has helped
over 200 homeless first-time mothers-to-be and their babies. This
unique program saves society over $50K per baby in hospital and
medical costs for every full-term baby born healthy.

3:15 P.M. – HUMMING WITH POSSIBILITies
When Mala came to the Family Preservation Center, she was surprised and delighted
with the opportunity to learn new skills. She had sewn on buttons, but never made
a pillow or handbag, much less a skirt. While she continues to work through the very
painful experiences that brought her to HomeFront, her afternoons spent at SewingSpace keep her centered, positive and empowered!
The ArtSpace and SewingSpace programs provide therapeutic
healing through self-expression along with a sense of empowerment. Last year, 619 clients discovered themselves and the joy of
making something beautiful.

4:05 P.M. – A home is fundamental
Ava arrived at HomeFront with her kids in tow holding an eviction notice. Trembling
hands and a shaky voice were outward signs of how scared she was inside. Getting to
her job at a local rehabilitation center took two buses and over an hour. HomeFront
helped stabilize the family and soon moved them into one of their permanent affordable houses. Ava now works at a nearby hospital. Her children receive the educational
support, life enrichment and joy that every child should have, through HomeFront’s
stellar year-round children’s programming.
Last year, nearly 100 families were able to lead lives of dignity
and hope, thanks to the permanent affordable housing that
HomeFront provides to hard-working, low-income families.

5:00 p.m. – A FAMILY FINDS A HAVEN
After being beaten for the third time in a month, Paulette left one morning
with nothing but a suitcase and some things for her children. She walked to
a nearby convenience store and called the HomeFront hotline. By dinnertime, she
and her children will have a comfortable, private room, good food to eat and the
prospect of a night’s sleep without fear. Tomorrow they will all start on the road
to a better life.
Every aspect of the Family Preservation Center is designed to
be warm, nurturing and as non-institutional as possible in order
to mitigate the trauma of homelessness on women in crisis, and
especially their children. On any given day, laughter, introspection,
lots of hugs and plenty of hard work fill the hours for every
resident.

It has been a long day for Maria. She had a computer class, a parenting class and a
session where she learned how to budget her money. However, all her fatigue vanishes
when she picks up her daughter Ramaine at the Family Preservation Center child care
center. They will head to the dining hall for dinner and tell each other about their day.
The Family Preservation Center offers quality childcare on-site so
that moms can attend classes and service appointments throughout the day in order to work toward resolving their situations.

Jenny used to hate school. She could never keep up with the other kids and her teacher
seemed impatient with her sometimes. She had no books or computer at home and
no quiet place to study either, so things just didn’t stick in her head like they did for
the other kids. Things are different now because three nights a week the Children’s
Champion team makes sure she gets one-on-one tutoring, just the kind of support
she needs to succeed in school.
The Joy, Hopes and Dreams children’s program provided yearround support—tutoring, cultural enrichment, sports and summer
camp for 368 children ages 6–14—ensuring the circle of support
that all children need to reach their potential.

order and once again experienced a completely clean audit. We continue
to keep our commitment to spend more than 90% of every dollar directly
on the families we serve. We are pleased to have again received a 4-star
Charity Navigator Award for our ability to efficiently manage and grow
our finances.
