Message from the President
As global politics and the economy remained volatile this past year, public libraries across the
country worked to reposition themselves in order to remain relevant in a new era of financial
austerity and the explosion of digital tools. The Westport Library has boldly surged forward,
embracing these changes as an opportunity to adapt to the needs of the community. By
expanding its definition, it is becoming a hub for people to connect, discover and create.
This evolution is made possible by tremendous cooperation between members of the
board, donors and friends, volunteers and staff. Change involves an element of risk, and
we are fortunate to enjoy a solid collaboration among people who believe in the mission to
sustain a Library that is the standard for free and open access to learning in a creative, safe
environment.
Join me in thanking all of those who have contributed in myriad ways to building an
institution that resonates pride. It is this support that allows us to move forward and
welcome the challenges ahead.
Eduardo Andrade, President, Board of Trustees
From the Library Director
I wake up each day wondering what I will need to learn in order to be on top of things.
What I don’t wonder is whether, where, or how I will learn.
Why? Because I, like you, count on the Westport Library.
Surrounded by the wisdom of the ages and an excellent book collection, people are coming
together more than ever before to share insights, information, and community experiences.
Foot traffic is up. Why is this happening in a time when so much is only a touch away on our
electronic devices? You have answered that question loud and clear. You value being part of
a community where people exchange information and inspire each other. You recognize that
discovering together can be more effective, productive and fun, than working alone.
On behalf of the staff of the Westport Library, I thank you for the privilege of serving one
of the most intellectually curious, entrepreneurial, and invigorating communities anywhere.
In order to stay ahead in this increasingly complex world, your contributions are a key part
of the Westport Library’s ability to provide the most up-to-date resources. We couldn’t do it
without you.
Maxine Bleiweis, Library Director

WESTPORT LIBRARY SUPPORTERS JULY 1, 2011 - JUNE 30, 2012
Everyone who gives to the Library is a Friend of the Library
From its beginning, private donations have helped sustain the Westport
Library. In 1908, Morris K. Jesup donated funds for a Library building.
Thanks to his vision and generosity, and $15,000 in additional private
contributions, the Library was officially incorporated. This was the
beginning of a public/private partnership between the Town and
individual donors that continues to this day.
Thank you for your support.
Westport Library Anchor Society
The Anchor Society is a group of individuals, families and organizations
who have made a commitment to the future of the Westport Library
by donating a minimum of $2500 throughout the fiscal year.

On the
Cover
These are the faces of the
Library, your faces. You come
in by the hundreds every
single day to attend programs,
work, create and connect with
each other. You are a diverse
group who see the Library in
different ways and use it for
different reasons. In the spirit
of viewing the Library from
many vantage points, and as
a whimsical tribute to our 3D
printer and other innovations
you have embraced, we
decided to make some of
the images in this report 3D,
viewable with special glasses
attached to the inside back
cover. Look for 3D next to
selected photos, and put on
your glasses to see them
transformed! If you’d like to
learn how we made the 3D
images, see page 20.
In this era of transition for
public libraries, the Westport
Library is evolving into a
multi-dimensional hub for
participatory learning while
still offering traditional
services and programs.
Over the past year, we’ve
added sparkle with a dash of
risk, and each effort proved
successful and enlightening.
With generous help from
donors and sponsors, the
Library becomes a hub for
dreaming, discovering and
doing things together.
Take a look at
some highlights
from 2011-2012…

The Mini
Maker Faire
A showcase of inventions
and crafts inspired by the
nationwide Maker movement,
the Mini Maker Faire in April
attracted 2,200 people from
across New York and New
England. Organized by the
Library in partnership with
CLASP Homes, it was a festival
of innovation in a hands-on
environment, featuring a
wide range of creations from
arduino projects to homemade
marshmallow shooters,
a robot and a personal
submarine. More than 50
Makers demonstrated their
wares on a crisp sunny day
on every level of the Library,
on Jesup Green and along the
banks of a sparkling river.
3D Printer
A 3D printer, which produces
physical objects from digital
files, became a magnet of
interest during the summer.
Thousands of people saw
it at the Library for the first
time. The Makerbot “printed”
practical items like pieces for
a chessboard, model airplanes
and tools. Used for years in
engineering, industry and
technology, they are gaining
mainstream popularity.

Maker Space
The Library’s progression
towards participatory
learning as well as the
success of the Mini Maker
Faire spawned the creation
of a Maker Space in The
Great Hall, a place for
people to come together
to imagine and create.
The metal framed structure
was designed by Southport
resident Joseph Schott.
It took seven days to build
with the help of many
volunteers. Watch the timelapse video on the website
to catch all the action.
Summer Maker-in-Residence
Schott supervised the
design and production of
two GeeBee airplanes from
the 1930s, a project that
entertained and educated
people from 9 to 90. A
Maker Committee was
formed to find and schedule
demonstrations, speakers
and workshops for the
Maker Space.
Come in and take
a look at what’s
going on inside
the Maker Space.

READS 2012
This year, Westport read
I Was Amelia Earhart by
Jane Mendelsohn, a poetic
novel about the mystery of
the legendary pilot’s final
flight. The series of events
during January, culminating
in a tropical island party in
The Great Hall, marked the
75th anniversary of Earhart’s
disappearance.
Westport youth joined in
by reading a selection of
age-appropriate companion
books. Staff made colorful
paper airplanes, and planes
of different vintages and
sizes were on display
throughout the building.
Westporters brought in their
plane related photographs
for an inspiring art exhibit
on the Riverwalk Level.
WestportREADS program is
dedicated to strengthening
the community through the
shared experience of a book
or an author.
Get a head start on the
WestportREADS 2013
book, The Great Gatsby,
by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The Westport Library
embraces new resources
provided by technological
advances, and is committed
to sharing knowledge
related to new ideas and
new formats for exploring
them. Two Technology
Petting Zoos, one in The
Great Hall and one in the
Children’s Library, were
established as hands-on
centers for patrons to
tinker with iPads and an
assortment of tablets and
e-readers. Free personal
training was available on
a regular basis.
An APP Slam in March
brought people together
to “slam,” or recommend
their favorite digital
applications. At the end,
an iPad was given away
in a drawing as part of the
launch of a new e-book
service, Freading.

Hunger Games
Over 100 Westport teenagers
survived this re-enactment of
the wildly popular book and
movie, the story of a postapocalyptic North America
in which teens are selected
by lottery to take part in a
televised survival competition.
Supervised by a team of
volunteers, the costumed
participants played their parts
in a transformed Great Hall
full of trees, flat screens and
plenty of sugary fuel. The
event was covered by USA
Today and generated interest
from around the country.
TEDx
Young innovators shared
their ideas at the Library’s
first TEDx, a locally produced,
independently organized TED
(recorded talks about Technology, Education and Design)
program. Five Westport
teenagers produced the
program and presented their
thoughts on topics including
new media journalism, living
in a technology-integrated
world and an initiative to aid
senior citizens.

revered by children and
parents alike is the Summer
Reading Club, which
enrolled 1,916 children who
read almost 13,000 books!
So much more happened
over the course of the
year—fourth graders made
over 80 book trailers (many
posted on the website),
dozens enjoyed an art
reception for pre-schoolers,
toddlers rocked to music,
first-graders toured the
Library, and hundreds of
new readers read to certified
therapy dogs.
In the spirit of making,
children built structures
with boxes and spaceships
with an assortment of
materials. Librarians introduced technology along
the way, implementing new
tools for interacting with
children, like picture book
apps on tablets, scanned
books for big-screen viewing
and smartboard games.

Insights from
Entrepreneurs
This series focused on local
entrepreneurs and their
personal stories. Doug
Bernstein, long-time Westport
resident and co-founder of
Melissa & Doug toy company,
spoke about how he and his
wife started and grew their
tremendously successful
company over the course of 23
years. Rick Smilow, president
and principal owner of the
Institute of Culinary Education
(ICE), discussed the challenges
and rewards of managing a
dynamic service and education
business. Both conversations
were moderated by journalist
and NPR host Alison Freeland.
Libraries
and Business
IBM executive Mark
Loughridge’s talk about
the company’s 100th
anniversary was followed
by a panel discussion about
the correlation between
IBM’s development and the
evolution of libraries.

Learning
Together
The Library is a venue for
programs and events, but it
is also becoming a place for
people to learn from each
other in self-directed groups.
The Library’s new Language
Conversation Groups, informal
gatherings for people to speak
in a specific language, were
extremely popular. Speakers
of French, Hebrew, Italian,
Japanese, Russian and other
languages met regularly in
various parts of the building.
“The language
groups are the
best thing the
Library’s ever
done!”
The monthly Book Chat
continued to gain popularity.
And a new iPad User Group
program was established
for people interested in
teaching each other how
to use the iPad.

Book Sales
Friends of the Westport
Library receive and process
about 100,000 items each
year, which include books,
DVDs, CDs, videos and LP
records. Book sale income
helps support the Westport
Library’s programs, projects,
and collection. The Friends
also provide book kiosks
with free books at the
Westport Train Station and
during the summer at
Joey’s at Compo Beach.
Gently used books that are
recent or of current interest
are sold year-round on book
sale shelves located on the
main level across from the
Circulation Desk, and in the
lobby outside of the AudioVisual Department on the
Riverwalk Level.
The Library accepts items
at the circulation desk any
time the Library is open. If
you have a large donation
and need help, a volunteer
can pick up your donation.
Call 203.291.4840 to make
arrangements.

How to create a 3D image
3D images (anaglyphs) require special glasses
with colored filters for viewing. The process does
require that you have good vision in both eyes,
otherwise you cannot see the 3D effect.
Anaglyphs are still or moving pictures where the
red and blue channels have been split and then
reassembled so that the image appears threedimensional when viewed through 3D glasses.
To understand how anaglyphs work, we first
must realize that the image that we see as blue
and red lines is really two different pictures.
There are two pictures superimposed over top of
each other. One picture for each eye. The special
colored glasses do two things. First, each lens
makes one of the images dark so that one of your
eyes can see it well. Second, each lens filters
out the other image so that each eye only sees
one of the two pictures. It is the difference in the
pictures that creates the effect.
The basic rules are:
1. Lines that are drawn right on top of each other are seen on the picture plane.
2. Lines that shift the blue to the left are seen
behind the picture plane.
3. Lines that shift the blue to the right are seen in front of the picture plane.
4. The greater the shift, the farther from the picture plane the lines are perceived.
5. You never want to shift your lines farther apart than the distance between both eyes.
6. Shifts are always horizontal (side to side) and NEVER vertical (up and down).
Create a fun 3D effect that will pop off the page and
screen. Grab your 3D glasses, and either Photoshop
or GIMP. Or you can download free 3D Photo Maker
software that’s available for Windows.
You can use any kind of image, but you’ll need to be in
RGB Color mode. So if you start in Grayscale, or CMYK,
you should convert to RGB by going to
Image > Mode > RGB Color (in Photoshop)
This method works for any image program that lets
you play around in channels, like Photoshop or GIMP.
Photoshop Elements and Paint.NET do not allow this
sort of image editing .
Start editing your image by making multiple copies of
your photograph.
Layer > Duplicate Layer
With two copies made, select the topmost one, and go
to your channels panel.
Window > Channels.
In the channels panel, pick your RED channel. Select the
entire canvas (Select All) . The RED channel will look like
a grayscale version of your image, see below.
Select your Move Tool and move the red channel over to
the left.
Save file and enjoy your 3D image.
