Graeme Welsh (Grumpy)
Grumpy wasn’t in the defence force, but rather the land army, providing food
and other necessities during war time
How long have you been a member of Sunbury RSL? 8 years
How long have you lived in Sunbury? 32 years
What has changed in the town for you in that time? Sunbury
has grown so much, new housing everywhere, more shops, more people , more
everything except parking spaces
What other activities are you involved in? Grumpy and
Heather are in an Orchid club, they have over 100 orchids.
What would you like to see change in Sunbury? Better road
infrastructure. Trains, there are many more now, and Sunbury stopped every
time a train crosses Station Street.
What was your first job? Grumpy began his working life as a
welder earning 5/What was your first car, and what did it cost you? A Ford
Prefect ute 20 pound
What is your favourite place to
holiday? Queenscliff, on-site caravan,
every Christmas and Easter
Grumpy knows all the important dates in
life, he tells me his great memory comes

Friday Evening Dinners
The last Friday every month there is a dinner at the club rooms.
You are welcome.
During the warmer month it’s a BBQ salad etc.
In the colder months it a variety of casseroles.
There is always dessert.

Kismet Park Stud
Kismet Park Homestead was built by Sir Rupert Turner Havelock Clarke in 1909.
Kismet Park Stud consisted of 1000 acres a racecourse, and a lake (Kismet Lake)
that supplied water to Kismet and Rupertswood.
In 1927 Mr Les Aldridge transferred his horse
stud from Richmond Park, South Australia to
Kismet Park Stud. At first he had the property
on lease from the estate of Sir Rupert Clarke
until he purchased the property in 1950.
Mr Aldridge brought with him from
Richmond Park a number of horses and some
members of staff. They included Mr Lindsey Horsley, who lived in the house
where the now Sunbury College Tennis Courts are located.
Kismet Park Homestead 1956
Mr Len Palmer who lived on the corner of Pasley Street and Riddell Road and
Mr Gilbertson who lived in Horne Street. Mr Lindsey Horsley was the first stud
groom at Kismet Park, but at the outbreak of World War 2 he enlisted in the
A.I.F. His position was taken over by Mr Alf Gilbertson. In 1945 Mr Gilbertson
left Kismet Park and Mr Ernie Free was to fill the position.
There were a number of Australia’s top stallions that stood at Kismet Park. They
were Manfred the winner of over twenty-eight thousand pounds in stakes and
sire of the 1937 Melbourne Cup winner “The Trump”.
Others were Lawmaker, Chavey Down, Empyrean, Council, and Landau who was
raced by Her Majesty the Queen. Landau imported by E.A Underwood who paid
the then record price of 30,000 pounds Australian for him. Landau was on lease
to Mr Aldridge.
In 1948 Empyrean imported sire commenced stud duties at Kismet Park, and
with his first batch of off-spring set a new Australian record for a first season
sire. In 1953 Chavey Down imported sire commenced stud duties at Kismet.
This magnificent and high class racehorse raced with the best in Britain. Kismet
Park Stud produced winners of more than one million pounds in stakes money.
From 1954-58 the studs aggregate sales from the yearling sale was the highest
at the Melbourne yearling sales.

Time is going so quickly, I remember my Gran, and then my mum
saying, “the older you get the faster the time goes” I thought, ‘you
silly old bugga’ but I seem to have joined the ranks of silly old
buggas. I have recently become a Granny, a beautiful baby boy. I
had no idea how much of my time would be taken by a new mum
and baby. Anyway, still love them both, though some days its
harder than others.
I am very much enjoying doing the newsletter for you, and am still
receiving good feedback, though more contributions would be good. Its
not hard work, and I have some more ideas, also I think I may try to
get it out every month, provided I can find enough of interest, we will
see how it goes.
Please take lots of photos at the Shrine and write me an article on
your experience.
