Haven Foundation 2012 Annual Report
the 2012 haven
annual report
30
looking forward to
the haven’s 30th year
From The Haven’s Executive Director
and the Chair of the Haven Foundation Board
Welcome to The Haven’s 2012 Annual Report. We hope you
enjoy reading about the many different things that happened at
The Haven in 2012, and what we are planning for our 30th anniversary year in 2013.
The end of the year is a great time to reflect and appreciate. This annual report is a snapshot of an entire year at The
Haven, and showcases the different ways in which so many
people come together to make The Haven the successful and
creative place that it is. For the first time in 2012, we chose
a word for The Haven for the year. That word was ENERGY.
Energy has manifested itself in so many different ways at The
Haven through the people who supported our work: program
participants, donors, faculty, our founders, assistants, interns,
youth leaders, members of staff, bodyworkers, board directors,
committee members, suppliers, contractors. The range and
richness of the contributions from all of these different sources
means that we continue to thrive.
2012 has been a successful year in so many ways. Looking
through the year at a glance shows the huge variety of events
that take place in just 12 months. We are in our second year of
implementation of the 2010-15 Strategic Plan which continues
to produce great results for the organization. Our educational
work offers ‘high-quality, transformational learning experiences
in a group setting’ in Canada, China and elsewhere, for adults
and youth, for participants and interns in our training program.
We are fortunate to call on the experience and passion of our
faculty who fulfill leadership roles in the programs and within
the organization.
Our list of donors continues to grow and takes up more
space in the report this year than ever before. We have benefitted from the generosity of our donors who have supported a
huge range of different projects. A notable success in 2012 has
been the expansion of the donor base for the Youth Leadership
Program, putting it on a more sustainable footing for the future.
A substantial donation by Andrew Bing facilitated the creation
of the Education Development Fund, which has supported
faculty development and creativity and new leader training.
Thanks to the steadfast support of Laurie Kelley, Scott Poole
and family, we were able to establish and enjoy the fruits of a
natural garden on The Haven property. At the end of the year
we once again have a matching pool for donations to Financial
Aid, thanks to our board and Haven members. We appreciate
all the different ways that our donors contribute to The Haven’s
success.
During 2012 The Haven Foundation Board adopted the Policy Governance model. Created by Dr. John Carver, Policy Governance is a groundbreaking model designed to empower
boards of directors to fulfill their obligation of accountability for
the organizations they govern. The model enables the board to
focus on the larger issues, to delegate with clarity, to control
management’s job without meddling, to rigorously evaluate the
accomplishment of the organization and thereby to truly lead. It
is a model which has clear parallels with Haven teachings, most
especially with its focus on self-responsibility, boundaries and
clarity. The adoption of this model has had a profound effect
on the work of the board and clarifies both the board’s role and
the boundaries of the board’s work and that of the staff.
The people who work at The Haven are a vital part of what
we do. Many have been with The Haven for many years and
have taken programs and trained here. This year we celebrated
25 years of working in The Haven’s kitchen with Vivien Quinn.
Haven staff have continued to make improvements to the service they provide and to the property in big and small ways,
moving The Haven towards greater environmental sustainability. Each member of staff contributes something only she or he
can add. Whatever the role, their job is a necessary part of the
whole Haven experience.
It has also been a bittersweet year, as we reflect on those
we have lost and their contribution to The Haven. As we look
forward with excitement to an exciting 30th anniversary year in
2013, we also mark with sadness the passing of Gwen Ewan, a
former Director of Education and member of faculty for many
years, and Alan Brown, a graduate of the Diploma program.
We hope you enjoy reading this report, and look forward to
welcoming you to The Haven in 2013.

Progress towards 2010-15 Strategic Plan Goals
This update on the second year of implementation of the Strategic Plan was presented to the Haven
Foundation Board in September 2012.
focus area 1: curriculum
focus area 3: facilities and operations
Expand The Haven’s Curriculum by Creating
a Relationships Stream for Couples
In 2011 five Couples Alive programs ran. In 2012 we have scheduled eight programs. We are planning to run six programs in
2013. To date five programs have filled to the maximum capacity. In 2011 we had 84 participants in total, 25 of whom were
new to The Haven (30%). In 2012 we have 74 participants to
date, 35 of whom are new (47%).
Perform Deferred Maintenance
Work continues on the deferred maintenance list. A further 14
items have been completed as well as many other unscheduled
maintenance projects which were addressed as required. Roof
screws were replaced on Osprey, Swallow and Raven.
Plan for Faculty, Assistant and Intern Succession
Faculty succession planning is underway, and is focusing on
two main time periods:
•
•
Succession in the next 10 years.
Succession in the 10-25 year time frame.
Potential new leaders will be identified from among younger
participants, youth leaders and interns. In addition to the training provided through the diploma program, there will also be
financial support available and mentoring. In this way we can
‘fast track’ potential new leaders.
Steps are now being taken to provide opportunities for a small
group of diploma graduates/assistants to be trained and mentored into leadership of core programs. This group, together
with others who will join them, will provide what is needed in
terms of succession in the next 10 years.
focus area 2: marketing
Make a Long-Term Commitment to Marketing
The Haven’s Programs
The Victoria and Vancouver Toolkits in 2011 both filled to maximum capacity. In 2012 we ran Toolkits in Prince George, Courtenay and at The Haven. In 2013 we are planning Toolkits in Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle and Yellowknife.
We now have a complete referrer relationship management system in place, administered by the registrars. We had a referrer event at Easter which was much appreciated by those who
attended. Occasional referrer newsletters are sent out to 100
of our regular referrers and a further 50 professionals (mainly
counsellors) who have opted in to our newsletter. We now
receive a monthly lead source report which provides information on how participants came to The Haven. This has also
given us valuable historical data.
In 2011 we had 209 Toolkits participants in total and 124 in
2012. To date thirty-two participants (15%) have returned to
do other programs from the 2011 Toolkits. Thirteen of the 2012
Toolkits have already returned to do programs, representing
10% of the total number.
The five-year plan was provided to the board together with the
capital project budget request for 2012.
Foster a Culture of Excellence at The Haven
In a comparison of the first six months of participant survey
results against all of 2011, the average level of satisfaction has
increased in the following areas:
•
•
•
Accommodation (4.02/5 to 4.13/5)
Session rooms (4.02/5 to 4.38/5)
Meals (4.46/5 to 4.57/5)
All other areas have stayed approximately the same and no area
receives an average of less than 4 out of 5.
We have been successful so far in covering the staff training
needed by applying for grants in addition to our usual annual
training budget. There has been consistent investment in
equipment – such as the golf cart for housekeeping – to improve
efficiency in all areas.
focus area 4: fundraising and financing
Establish a Comprehensive Fundraising Strategy and Plan for
Implementation
As part of the move towards the Carver model of governance,
the fundraising strategy is now in the hands of the management
team. Fundraising results from 2011 and the numbers predicted
for 2012 demonstrate that the strategy is working. Fundraising
targets for 2011 were exceeded and we are on target for meeting our goals in 2012.
Commitment to a Substantial and Stable Financial Aid
Program
In 2011, 592 out of 7364 participant nights were funded
through bursaries, a total of 8%. We are on target for investment in the bursary contingency fund.
The Education Steering Group
David Raithby, ESG Chair
The Education Steering Group: David
Raithby (Chair), Ernie McNally, Linda
Nicholls, Susa Holt, Susan Clarke.
The Education Steering Group (ESG),
formed in 2011, creates and recommends educational strategy and
direction, works on faculty/assistant
development, and encourages innovation and experimentation in Haven
education.
The ESG has had a busy and successful year, as seen in the
synopsis below, although not without challenges. We look forward to being a part of the further unfolding of The Haven’s
educational potential in the coming year.
Education Development Fund
In February, 2012, the ESG proposed that the Haven Board
establish an Education Development Fund. The Board’s
approval of this initiative has allowed the ESG to fund important projects, and to plant seeds for future growth. We look forward to the continued use of this excellent resource.
Among the initiatives undertaken in 2012 are the following:
Program Development
• Revitalization: Redeveloping three established programs.
• New programs: Evaluating and approving seven proposals
for new leader-owned programs.
• New stream: Initiating development of a new Business/
Teams Program.
• Leader-owned programs: Supporting the development of
two established leader-owned programs.
• Away-programs: Exploring the possibility of offering Core
Programs in other locations.
Faculty/Assistants
• Faculty contracts: Reviewing and updating Faculty
contracts.
• New assistants: Clarifying the approval process for, and
working with, 4 Graduate Interns.
• Faculty performance: Preparing to initiate a new performance review process.
• Certification: Exploring Certification with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association.
• Mentoring interns: Developing a process to aid Assistants in
mentoring interns.
Leadership Development
• Phase III training: Exploring the possibility of adapting New
Horizons Phase III to train new leaders.
• Leaders-in-training: Initiating a leader-in-training process,
beginning with 3 candidates.
• Youth leadership: Continuing to explore options for the
development of youth leaders.
Educational Direction
• Core definitions: Clarifying the composition of Core Programming and Faculty.
• Research/Statistics: Tracking participation in core programs.
• Rallying The Haven: Evaluating what is required to excite
and move The Haven forward.
• Redefining the ESG: Developing a more effective structure
for the ESG. Late this year we will be meeting to study further recommendations in this regard, which we hope to
bring to the Board and Faculty shortly thereafter.
Intern Training Program
Jane Olynyk, Director of Intern Training
This year, we have graduated
three interns, making a total of
93 who have had the courage
and perseverance to accomplish
this task. Currently we have 96
interns, 40 that are currently
active. 10 new interns have
joined the Certificate program
this year, amazing people with
lots to offer. I continue to feel
privileged to work with these
folks so intimately and to see
them grow.
After reviewing the curriculum initiated in 2008, we
made changes to the order in which students take programs. Before interning in the Certificate program, they
must first complete Phase II. In the Diploma program,
Phase III must be done before interning. These changes will
give students a stronger personal foundation before working with others and maintain The Haven’s high standard of
training.
We are aware of the need to develop younger leaders.
Certainly with Gwen’s passing and Ernie’s illness, we are
reminded of this need. With the ESG, I have looked at how
to bridge to the Youth programs, by giving equivalency
credit toward the Certificate program as an incentive.
The 5th annual Intern and Assistant Weekend was
in September, with a dozen mini-workshops offered by
senior interns and assistants. 28 people attended and it
was a rich experience for all of us. This year the fees were
increased to cover the cost of the weekend, which was an
offering from the participants from last year’s meeting.
I am working to have our program professionally recognized. The Haven has become an associate member of
the Canadian Professional Counselors Association, a group
that gives accreditation to counselors. I hope to become a
supervisor and then our students can sit the exam to get
the designation of Registered Professional Counselor.
Youth Leadership: KITS 25th Anniversary
Denise Goldbeck
2012 was an exciting year for Kids in the Spotlight (KITS) at The
Haven. We celebrated the 25th year of the program with a lot
of fanfare. We made a video commemorating the occasion and
invited alumni to come and partake of the festivities. Several
people who had been at the very first KITS program came back,
some with babies and toddlers in tow. We spent time talking
with people – now grown up – who had attended as wee children decades ago and heard about how much they have benefited from the program. Many people have said to me, “Imagine how great it would be to have known the communication
model all through childhood!” Well, we now have lots of grown
ups who say, “Yes, it was great,” and are bringing their children
to The Haven now!
Also this year was special because of the creation of the
Mackenzie Dickson/Annika Raithby Chair, which provides
$5,000 per year for a senior assistant to assist and practice
leadership skills in the Youth Intern Training Workshop, Kids in
the Spotlight and Teens Alive (TA). Our thanks go to Scott Poole
and Laurie Kelley.
It was Mackenzie Dickson’s last year as assistant in KITS and
TA. At age 23 he has participated in KITS for the past 15 years.
Annika finished her assistantship last year having begun in KITS
when she was eight years old. “We’ve been coming to KITS for
most of our lives!” they said in disbelief.
Also Carmen Melore, Josie Baker, Wyatt Gibbons and Alex
Lord received their Volunteer Certificates this past summer and
Sierra Osmers was awarded her Youth Leadership Diploma.
Annika Raithby and Mackenzie Dickson: “We’ve been coming to KITS for most of our lives!” They are
now in their 20s and this year had a chair created in their honour thanks to Scott Poole and Laurie
Kelley, to provide funding for other senior assistants in KITS.
Sierra Osmers, pictured here back
in 2005, was awarded her Youth
Leadership Diploma in 2012.
Group Bookings
In the Community
2012 has been another interesting year for independent groups
coming to The Haven and using our facilities., including the
string ensemble retreat, A Cappella Plus Retreat, and Women
and Men Friends.
Some new programs on our 2013 calendar ran very successfully in 2012 as group bookings. Nothing Left Unsaid with John
Fleury and Jim Nelson and Open Door/Livingness with Sarah
Fleury and Ashanti Fraser were all very well attended.
We don’t normally do weddings, but this year dear Haven
friends wanted to celebrate here so we made an exception three
times! Congratulations Judy Hancock and Terry Holland, Kelly
Price and Brad Shipley, and Karin Yeung and Bob Matthews! May
you enjoy your rich and loving relationships!
We have continued our relationship with the Inner Activist
and with the Integrative Body Psychotherapy Institute, providing
the venue for their programs.
As we come into our 30th year, The Haven is a vital part of Gabriola life. We are one of the largest employers on the island, providing wages and benefits to 26 permanent employees and their
families. We draw many visitors who go out into the community
and support the local economy.
The Haven also provides a wonderful venue for the performing arts, hosting concerts that regularly feature internationally
known performers. In 2012, we partnered with the Gabriola Arts
Council for our Artist in Residence program, further enhancing
Gabriola’s reputation as “The Isle of The Arts.” We offer local
groups reduced rates to use our facilities, encouraging homegrown talent.
Rachel Davey was on the board of the Gabriola Chamber of
Commerce, putting The Haven at the center of many conversations about local business. We are also supporters of the Welcome Wagon program.
Haven Programs in China
Carole Ames, Director of International Relations
We have had another busy and successful year in our International activities with Haiwen, our partner in Mainland China. By
year’s end we will have presented 13 Haven programs to over 450
students in China. Most of these students are part of The Haven
International Diploma in Leadership and Counselling Program and
are looking forward to applying their learnings in the arenas of
coaching, counselling, and group leadership, as well as immediate
applications in their personal and business lives.
Our programs have ranged from Come Alive (same format as
taught in Canada) to Mini-Phases (11-day concentrated versions
of Phases I, II and III) to electives on boundaries, group leadership,
personality styles, bodywork and gestalt. In addition some of our
leaders have presented their own programs, so that Mainland
Chinese students are having many varied opportunities to learn in
related and complementary programs.
Thirty-five students graduated with The Haven International
Diploma in 2012, and we are now finalizing the scheduling for
programs in 2013 and beyond. Haiwen reports that The Haven
offerings continue to be very well received and that The Haven is
becoming well known and respected in China.
Since we first started presenting programs in Mainland China
over seven years ago, they have been primarily presented in
Shenzhen, located in southern China near Hong Kong. Haiwen has
recently undergone a significant review and restructuring process
which is intended to better support the International Diploma
program while exploring areas for possible expansion. As Haiwen
expands its offerings to include non-diploma programs for business, corporate and professional students, we anticipate that
some of our leaders will be presenting these programs in Shenzhen as well as Beijing and elsewhere.
Many Chinese students continue to be interested in our Canadian programs and for the third year in a row many travelled to
Canada for a 17-day block of translated programs led by David
Raithby, Linda Nicholls, Ernie and Cathy McNally, Marlyn Farrell,
Jock McKeen and Toby Macklin.
We are continuing to explore interning and leader development opportunities in Mainland China. This means that policies
have been created to allow for Chinese students to enroll in our
Canadian Haven Certificate/Diploma streams, utilizing what they
have learned in our programs in China as well as taking programs
on-site in Canada, all under the supervision of our Director of
Intern Training, Jane Olynyk.
We also continue to work with Haiwen to explore ways to support Chinese students in moving into assistant and leadership
roles in programs in China. This is a more challenging project to
organize, but both The Haven and Haiwen are committed to being
creative in finding ways to make this happen. Vision, creativity
and perseverance have been the hallmarks of our international
work from the beginning, and this will continue.

Creating a Greener, More Sustainable Haven
We operate with love, integrity and respect for humanity and our environment and we manage our resources
responsibly and effectively. from the haven’s mission statement
We are now two years into an ongoing project to make The
Haven more environmentally sustainable. Our primary areas
of focus have been energy and water. Our goal is to substantially reduce The Haven’s energy use (by reducing our dependence on propane and saving electricity) and maximize the
efficiency of our water collection, storage and use.
The first step was to replace our older energy- and
water-inefficient large appliances with state-of-the-art
new equipment. Early in 2012 the Haven invested in new
high-efficiency laundry machines, a new high-efficiency
commercial dishwasher and a tune-up of the major propane
appliances. These projects have reduced our propane usage
by over 11,625 litres per year, reducing our CO2 gas emissions by 17,438 Kg of CO2. At the end of 2012 we installed
a new furnace in the lodge, which operates at 96.1% efficiency, compared to 65% for the old furnace. This change
should translate into further reducing our propane usage by
5,040 litres each year, reducing our carbon footprint by 4.8%.
We are also in the process of replacing other, smaller equipment: washing machines, dryers, the ice machine, fridges
and freezers.
Following an energy audit in 2011 carried out by LiveSmart
BC, we replaced almost all of the lightbulbs on the property (just under 1000) with LED bulbs, which are much more
energy efficient and contain less mercury than CFLs. We also
installed low-flow shower heads and low-flush toilets in the
majority of the accommodation rooms and high traffic areas
of The Haven. Thanks to the support of a generous donor,
we were also able to install a reverse osmosis system, which
allows us to increase the amount of potable water for The
Haven.
Looking ahead to our 30th anniversary year in 2013, we
are embarking on the next, more radical step, which involves
looking for alternative energy sources and rethinking the way
we source our water. There are now twelve 4' × 8' flat-panel
solar collectors on the roof of the Orca building. These panels
provide solar water heating for the swimming pool and the
Orca building, eliminating the propane heating for the swimming pool entirely. We believe this project will reduce our
propane usage by another 13,000 litres for the pool building heating, thereby reducing our carbon footprint by another
8.3% in 2013. We are hoping that stage two of the solar heating project, focused on the lodge, will happen in 2013.
Also in 2013 we are setting ourselves an ambitious target of becoming ‘well-free’ by the end of the year. Thanks to
the foresight of our founders, we have sufficient water storage capacity and a system for moving water around the property. At the beginning of 2013, with support from donors, we
will be increasing our water collection to 70% of all our buildings. This will enable us ultimately to stop drawing water from
our wells completely, and use rainwater collection as our sole
source of potable and non-potable water.
We are committed to continuing the work of increasing
our environmental sustainability to become a model for other
organizations on the Gulf Islands.
Solar panels on the roof of Orca … Just waiting for the sun to shine!

Financial Aid and Fundraising
Louise Amuir
Financial Aid The Haven’s Financial Aid program assists those with limited incomes or
financial difficulties to attend Haven programs. Since 2004, we have provided more than
half a million dollars in interest-free loans and bursaries to almost 500 adults and children. Financial Aid has helped people dealing with job loss, terminal illness, and paralyzing anxiety. It has helped children and teens with blending or dissolving families. It has
helped adults deal with a long list of childhood and other traumas – sexual abuse, violence, cultural displacement, loss – and helped them find a path of self-acceptance.
As in other years, you can double your impact in December. The Board and some
major donors have teamed up to provide a Matching Pool this year of $27,000.
Every dollar you donate will be matched!

Haven Harvest Online Silent Auction made $7,023 for Financial Aid, Haven
Holiday Granola sales contributed another $2,000.
The Gwen Ewan Memorial Fund honours our former Director of Education with
designated funds to further intern training. The Alan Brown Bursary remembers
Alan’s passion for both The Haven and Gabriolans. Thank you to all who sent in
donations to keep Gwen and Alan’s work alive.
Ernie McNally offered his 60th birthday as a gifting opportunity to Financial Aid,
raising $6,772 Thank you Ernie! You and your friends are shining souls!
Youth Leadership 2012 was the 25th anniversary of Kids in the Spotlight and in honour of its innovative work with youth leaders, we launched our 25 @ 25 for the 25th
campaign. The relationships between young children and their teen mentors is a valuable
part of the KITS program and the Youth Leadership Program ensures that teens return
year after year, positively modelling teen behaviour and learning about leadership. We
have had so much great feedback from parents, grandparents and caregivers over the
years about how their children have grown, blossomed and formed themselves by being
part of the program. We are very grateful that this year many more of you are partnering
with us to fund the Youth Leadership Program. We also thank Scott Poole and Laurie Kelley for creating the Annika Raithby/Mackenzie Dickson Chair, worth $5,000 every year to
fund a senior assistant in KITS.
At the opening of the Kelley Poole Organic Garden.
Strategic Plan In 2010, 13 Haven friends committed to a four-year pledge. Between
them, they pledged $40,000 a year for four years to bring our Strategic Plan into reality. As we enter into the final year (2013), we have really seen the fruits of their investment in the Strategic Plan! Our Couples Alive programs have come into their own and are
still developing. We have sent Toolkits out to Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Courtenay,
Prince George as well as hosting a set on Gabriola. Next year we plan to go to Yellowknife
and Seattle, as well as return to Vancouver and Victoria.
Education and Development Fund Andrew Bing generously donated $10,000 to the
EDF (as it is affectionately known). The EDF is available to The Haven’s Education Steering
Group to fund various projects. This year, they are developing new core faculty. This also
marked Andrew’s entry into the Phoenix Circle of Spirit. For many years Andrew was one
of the main supporters of the Youth Leadership Program. The photo on this page shows
him with the kids of Kids in the Spotlight!

Capital Projects In 2012, we saw the creation of The Kelley Poole Organic Garden.
Scott and Laurie partnered with us to create and plant a wonderful new garden space
which will continue to provide produce to serve in our buffet. David Beckwermert, Ravenwood Energy Corporation, has initiated our 2013 Capital Campaign with a lead donation of $26,000. We’ll be telling you more about it next year. Thanks David for setting us
on the path!

30th Anniversary Editions of
Wong & McKeen Classics
To mark the 30th anniversary, we are publishing substantially
revised new editions of both The Relationship Garden and The
Manual for Life by Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen. The authors have worked with editor Toby Macklin to produce these new,
more user-friendly versions of their most enduring titles. They
will be available early in 2013.
In 2012 McKeen and Wong published their newest book, The
Illuminated Heart: Perspectives on East-West Psychology
and Thought, now available from The Haven, on Amazon, and
from most eBook sellers.
TEDxGabriolaIsland
We are honoured in our 30th year to be the venue for the first
ever TEDxGabriolaIsland on Monday March 18, 2013. In the
spirit of ‘ideas worth spreading’ TED created TEDx, a program
of local, self-organized events that bring people together to
share a TED-like experience. Speakers include: Mary Gordon,
Shelagh Rogers, Mike Stevens, Victor Wooten, Jock McKeen,
Maria Gomori, Megan Daalder, Sheila Norgate, and Shelagh
Huston.
