Gelbvieh Breeders,
What a difference a year can make. We currently find ourselves in a very profitable time in the cattle business. A combination
of tight profit margins for several years and a drought in the southern
region has reduced the national cowherd to historic lows. As breeders
it is important to remember what has kept us in business through the
tough times, as well as what has built the Gelbvieh reputation in the
past. With higher feedstuff and replacement breeding stock prices it
is key for us as breeders to continue selecting for those traits that will
put money in our customer’s pocket. The Gelbvieh breed has much
to offer in today’s cattle industry. With tried and true maternal and
longevity traits, and the breeds current improvements with feed efficiency, Gelbvieh cattle are a perfect fit in the current market situation.
I encourage Gelbvieh breeders and commercial cattlemen
alike to take advantage of a couple showcase events that the Gelbvieh
Breeders of Iowa present on a yearly basis. The Gelbvieh Gold Sale
held in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo and the Gelbvieh show
at the Iowa State Fair are excellent opportunities for cattlemen to meet
Gelbvieh breeders and even purchase Gelbvieh genetics of the highest quality. The GBOI hosts a meal and social at each of these events
and we would be excited to visit with you about Gelbvieh cattle! The
GBOI is also attempting to host an annual Commercial Gelbvieh
female sale in which cattlemen can either purchase or consign their
Gelbvieh influenced females. Please take advantage of these opportunities to be involved with the Continental breed of Choice.

We have selected cattle with balanced Epds’; always stressing easy calving &
performance. This shows in our herd sires.
Here are some of the traits we looked for that don’t show in the Epds!
1.Thickness
2.Depth in rib, flank, and rear quarter
3.All have great disposition and are very quiet.
4.They are an outcross and outside todays main stream genetics.
5. They have won shows or are show quality.
6.All have matured into a moderate frame score.
Needless to say, we’ve looked hard to find these sires, semen is available.

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all having a great winter season if you could call this
winter. Up in northwest Iowa we have had a very mild winter so far and
now are on the downhill side of it. Soon we will be loading up the trailer
heading for our first show.
We are planning on having a fun day this year the first weekend in June,
which would be the 2nd and 3rd of the month. Mark your calendars
and plan to attend. This will be a fun day filled with several contests and
activities.
Luckily the next two years the Junior classic will be in our neighboring
states, just to the north and south of Iowa. This year it will be held in
Chillicothe, Missouri and next year it is in Rochester, Minnesota. Hopefully we will be able to have a lot of members participate so we can have
a good representation of Iowa. It would be great to have a whole aisle
designated to Iowa.
This publication of the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa Directory is encouraged to be used as a resource to promote the Gelbvieh breed. Don’t hesitate to contact one of the board members for extra directories to place
in locations where cattlemen acquire them or for any other reasons.
I would like to thank Tom Posusta for being our advisor and Doreen
for organizing the whole meal in Kearney and everything else they have
done. I also want to thank everyone for their time and effort in helping
our junior association.
If you are interested in joining the junior association feel free to contact
myself or any of the other members. We would love to have any new
members who are interested in getting involved and learning about the
