COZAD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Volume 10 COZAD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH October 2015 “Love, Learn, Lead” This week will be a week of learning. And right now my head is full of all kinds of information and ideas. First, at our annual Gateway District Pastor’s Update I heard about how we can improve our organizational health from David Dickinson. He helped us understand how to get the churches we serve more healthy. He began by outlining four important ideas – 1) Understand “Christ gave is life …so that the body of Christ (the church) may be built up.” 2) Pray for wisdom. 3) Acknowledge it is necessary. 4) Commit to hard work and changes. Another part of his presentation was a series of questions about who we think we are as a church that really got me to thinking. I want you to think about how you would answer these questions. Why do we exist? How do we behave? What do we do? How will we succeed? Over the next few months, we will need to talk about these questions and how they define the health of the church. David talked about much more that will help us as we grow. Then today I attended two workshops at the Leadership Institute of the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. Rev. Jacob Armstrong, pastor of the Providence UMC, shared his understanding of “Becoming the New Adapters”. One of the ideas I got from this workshop was how to build teams and make them more effective. Shortly after I came to the Cozad UMC over 5 years ago, we developed a team concept centered around 5 areas – Worship, Nurture, Education, Witness/Evangelism and Missions. It was in this workshop that I discovered the title of this column – “Love, Learn, Lead” – as Rev. Armstrong described how he conducted each of meetings – begin with worship (Love), gain some knowledge (Learn) and be encouraged to make a difference (Lead). But the most important workshop so far has to be the one I attended this afternoon. It was led by J. Cliff Christopher from Horizons Stewardship. It was a seminar on giving and how we can be better stewards of what God has given us. He made several good points and helped me better understand how we can be a better church in the area of stewardship. He asked a question really made me think – Are we changing lives? That is the one thing that separates us from every other non-profit organization. We are in the “business” of changing lives. That is what makes us unique. I can hardly wait until tomorrow to learn more and especially to hear Adam Hamilton. I hope to use one of his books in our Lenten study next spring. And you will hear more about what I learned over the next few weeks in my sermons and my newsletter articles. It is my hope that I can lead you to new ways of service for Jesus. [email protected] Renewal-A Commitment to the Future of Camp Comeca Camp Comeca is a special place for renewal—for the young people who come for its full schedule of summer programs and for the adult visitors who arrive year round for retreats, weddings and community events. After years of active use, the camp is now in need of its own renewal. Comeca has touched thousand of lives, nurturing spritis and offering a faith experience in a beautiful natural setting. Yet over time, significant parts of the camp have fallen into disrepair. For this important ministry to remain vital, there is much work to be done. Your donations and pledges will help renew Camp Comeca. The goal is to raise $994,000 in gifts and pledges by August 31, 2016. Of that, about half will pay for cabin renovation and debt repayment (273,000), swimming pool repair ($126,000), and sewer improvements ($45,000). Campaign expenses are estimated at $50,000. The $500,000 balance will build the endowment to strengthen the camp’s financial base. The Lloyd Wilson Foundation has challenged the Great Plains Conference to match a $250,000 grant toward the endowment, so your gift will be doubled by this generous grant! Prepare your heart with prayer and ask God how you can respond to support the camping ministry of Camp Comeca. In your discernment, consider that: Your gift has purpose. Your gift is tax-deductable payable to Great Plains Conference. You are welcome to spread your pledge over a three-year period. All pledges must be payable by December 31, 2018 A presentation will be at Cozad UMC by a member of the Capital Campaign at a later date.
