W Bar Fire Extinguisher - New Chamber Member
The Cozad Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome W Bar
Fire Extinguishers as new Chamber members. W Bar Fire
Extinguishers is owned and managed by Dennis, Jeff and Evan
Worrell of Cozad. They purchased the business from Darwin and
Keri Mast and are continuing to provide sales and services, as well
as, hydrostatic testing.
W Bar Fire Extinguishers sell fire extinguishers to businesses,
industries and for home use. They are also the only business in
central Nebraska that is capable of performing high pressure
hydrostatic testing on oxygen and CO2 bottles, scuba tanks and
SCBA’S for fire departments.
Businesses are required to
have inspections every year.
W Bar Fire Extinguishers inspect fire suppression systems in
restaurants and do annual inspections on fire extinguishers for nearly
130 businesses and industries. After purchasing a fire extinguisher, a
complete inspection and recharge are to be performed every six years.
They inspect each one thoroughly by taking the extinguishers apart to
inspect and replace parts on them. The fire extinguishers are then
tagged so businesses have proof of the inspection. Some businesses
have just one fire extinguisher to inspect, while others may have 200.
They recommend everyone who has a fire extinguisher in their home
to have it inspected each year to
make sure it is working properly even
if the needle is green, because the
powder tends to settle and get stuck
in the extinguisher.

Natural Escapes - Celebrating 10 Years of Excellence
10 years ago, a Cozad native and high school graduate returned home with a wife
and baby on the way to be closer to family and start up a business which today is a
thriving and diversified success in Cozad.
Following CHS graduation, Jeremy Koch went on in his education to earn a BA in
Studio Art with an emphasis on Landscape Design but he didn’t stop there. He went
on to UNL to add on Horticulture to his degree before marrying Bailey and starting
his family.
In 2006, Jeremy returned home to Cozad with his new family to start up his
landscaping business and with the help, hard work and encouragement from Cozad
First Bank & Trust, he rented-to-own what is now Natural Escapes. At that time the
garden nursery was just a shell that had previously been used as a dog kennel with an
empty garage where the store is
now and the destination garden was born.
“I want customers to experience nature with Natural Escapes.” shared Jeremy.
“Trees are my passion and evergreens are the first thing I place in a landscape
design.”
Landscape designing for home and business is computerized to show his
customers a photo quality picture of what the completed landscape will look
like. Consultation is free, however, should his customer wish to purchase the
CAD design, they can do so. Plants from Natural Escapes has a 1 year warranty
but if the customer has special treasured plants or trees they would like to keep,
Jeremy will implement them into the landscape design as well. He has a very
popular maintenance program for business and home owners. Jeremy measures
the square footage of the landscape and adds in all labor, mulch, weed control
and fertilizer for the year and divides the cost by 12 to be billed monthly making
it much easier for his customers.
Natural Escapes can special order trees, plants, even tropical ones like banana trees
and elephant ears that can be placed outdoors in the summer and enjoyed indoors
through the winder months. Jeremy is very careful to have plants and trees available
that work best for our area in Dawson County.
Three years ago, Bailey came up with the idea of starting a family art studio which
complimented Jeremy’s art talent and experiences and Art In The Garden was born
where families and groups come to paint their own pottery or canvas. This past year,
the art studio has bloomed to become a popular place for groups and families to
explore art and learn from Jeremy how easy and relaxing it is to tune into the
creative side of life. They have had
classes for bridal and baby showers,
birthday parties, scout groups, Ladies’
Night out, school field trips, spring and summer vacation fun and has had young and
old alike with kids as young as 5 years old participating. Walk-ins are welcome in the
fall and winter months but with the busy spring and summer season in the
greenhouse, art classes are scheduled by appointment during this time of year.
When asked what his favorite part of his job was, Jeremy announced without
hesitation, “Seeing the smiles on my customers faces. I love people and customer
relationships and making people happy.”
Bailey agreed that working with people especially teaching was her favorite part of
the job. “Because of my love for teaching, I love the Container Classes.” shared
Bailey. “People come from out of state and we have had people from Omaha sign up
for our container classes.”

Natural Escapes is offering 3 Container Classes a day
beginning April 2nd through April 10th. Classes are
available Monday through Saturdays - 11:00, 4:00, &
6:00 and Sundays 1:00, 4:00, & 6:00. The classes cost
$15 but a $5 coupon towards your first purchase is also
included. Those taking the class need to bring an
empty container (no soil should be in the container)
or one can be purchased at the store. Natural Escapes
will disinfect the container to protect against disease.
Those in attendance will learn about the functions of
annuals, soil types, organic fertilizer that will not burn plants and will have time for a Q & A.
Participants will be able pick out plants in the store. They have thousands of annuals and many
perennials to choose from with 16 new proven varieties for 2016. Succulents and tropical
varieties will also be available. Participants can leave their containers at the greenhouse at no
extra cost for care and maintenance until mid May when it is safe to take them home. They end
up with a beautiful established outdoor pot to display at a fraction of the cost
of purchasing an established one at the last minute. Participants are welcome
to bring as many containers as they wish. The most a participant has brought
to class thus far is 20 containers to pot.
Jeremy and Bailey are very close the their employees. “My daughter, Kathy,
helps out also and now even my grandchildren are helping.” shared Linda Mann
a 7 year employee.
Jeremy and Bailey love living where they work. Their two sons, Hudson (9) and
Asher (6) are big enough to help out also with watering and customers.
“It’s a big family affair!”
shared Bailey.
Jeremy is also a depression
survivor, as well as a
survivor of a serious car accident in 2012. Jeremy and Bailey have written a book
about their walk with faith and depression called, Never Alone.
“Mental illness can hit anyone at anytime.” shared Bailey. They have prioritized
their life to focus on their mission which is helping others and educating people
about mental illness. They have started a support group for anyone who is
suffering from a loss, depression, or wants to know more about mental illness.
The ministry is called ‘Anchoring Hope’ which meets every Monday evening
from 6:30- 7:30pm at the Cozad United Way. They have had nurses attend so
they can better help those suffering from mental illness.
“Landscape and art are icing on the cake but education is my passion.” shared
Bailey.
Bailey has recently accepted a lecturer position at UNK in the teacher
education department. She is very close to earning her doctorate degree and with her strong passion for people with special needs,
she will be teaching teachers how to teach people with special needs.
Jeremy and Bailey are very grateful for all of the business support they have had from
Dawson County and surrounding communities. They have brought in significant
business even from Kearney and North Platte areas.
The Cozad Chamber of Commerce congratulates Natural Escapes for 10 years of
excellent business. They have been very active on chamber committees, with chamber
events and as chamber event sponsors and very supportive of other businesses and
events within the community and surrounding area.

On Friday, March 11, the Cozad Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting for U Save Pharmacy, owned by pharmacist, Tyler
Sturgeon and his wife, Katie. U Save is located at 312 West 8th Street next to Frontier Home Medical.
The new pharmacy’s phone system can alert customers by phone, text or email when medications are ready to be picked up in-store or
at their Drive-Thru. Handicap parking and In Town Delivery are also available to their customers. If you do choose to come into the
store to for your prescription, coffee is available in their comfortable seating area, as well as, TV viewing while you wait.
Prescriptions transfers can be made with just a quick phone call and Tyler will handle the simple process for you.
U Save Pharmacy offers medication synchronization which saves their customers from making several trips to the pharmacy for
different prescriptions.
They stock a variety of over the counter medications, including vitamins and supplements, cold and cough medications, etc. Their
customers can also order nearly all their health supplies, including baby supplies and formula, breast pumps and breast feeding supplies,
etc. for Next Day Delivery.

Cutting for Eclectic Beauty Salon owned and
managed by Angie Cover. Eclectic offers hair care,
manicures and pedicures for the entire family and is
located 1t 711 Meridian Street next to Clark’s Shoe
Repair. Eclectic also offers a line of Paul Mitchel
products for a variety of hair types.
Angie understands the difficulty of trying to fit in
hair appointments around work, sports and family schedules which is why she offers flexible hours and days for her busy customers.

MARCH 16, 2016 (LINCOLN, NEB.)—Cozad, Neb. (pop.3934) has earned its
recertification in the Nebraska Economic Development Certified Community
Program. The city was originally certified in September 2007 and recertified in
December 2010 and February 2016. DED Director of Business Development
Dan Curran attended a luncheon today to recognize the City’s efforts. The program is sponsored by the Nebraska Diplomats and administered by the
Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Designation as a Nebraska
Economic Development Certified Community indicates that Cozad is
prepared for business growth and ready to meet the needs of companies
seeking new business and industrial locations.
“For nearly ten years now, Cozad has done everything right to grow and sustain
a vibrant economy that meets the needs of citizens of all ages, through a mix of
projects encompassing downtown redevelopment, new affordable housing, job
creation, technology, health care, education and fine arts,” said Nebraska
Diplomats President Dean Hart. “Cozad sets the bar very high as one of
Nebraska’s hot spots in which to do business, find good paying jobs, raise
families, and enjoy the quality of life that Nebraskans have come to expect.”
“It is an honor to continue to be a certified economic development community and I thank everyone involved in the
recertification process,” said Cozad Mayor Nancy Meyer. “Great things are happening in Cozad through continued investments
by both new and existing businesses and this recertification is another push to keep our momentum moving forward.” During the past five years, the City of Cozad, along with the Cozad Development Corporation (CDC) and Dawson Area
Development (DAD), attracted two new manufacturing businesses and five new service and retail businesses. These community
additions brought in 26 new jobs and helped two existing businesses expand.
“Cozad’s recertification demonstrates our community’s commitment to the continued growth of our economy through the
development of new industry, expansion of current businesses, the creation of jobs, and support for our local ag producers said
CDC Executive Director Robyn Geiser.
Other community development projects completed over the past five years include:

Creation of the Cozad Community Foundation in 2015

Cozad Telephone’s $10 million investment in new underground fiber leading to every home and business
·
Expanded facilities and services (including new equipment) at Cozad Community Hospital
·
A new $100,000 gallery showcasing featured artists at The Robert Henri Museum
·
A new $65,000 greenhouse for agriculture education and entrepreneurship training at Cozad Community Schools
·
A planning and implementation grant (the second of its kind) in the Downtown Revitalization category for façade
renovations and alley improvements.

Bronze Statue Dedication - Coach Dick Peterson
The Bronze Sculpture Dedication, honoring Coach Dick Peterson, is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at the
Cozad Country Club.
As an athlete, Dick, a native of Hayes Center, played football (quarterback), basketball, baseball (shortstop), ran track
(winning State, 100 yard dash) and played golf, scoring a hole-in-one, at the Fremont Country Club.
He was a coach for over 50 years, with his career beginning at Cozad in 1957, followed by Eustis Public Schools,
Fremont High School (1972 Golf Team winning State), Midland University, concluding his coaching at Cozad High
School.
Dick loved sports, always looking forward to the next challenge. He was a mentor, encouraging athletes to do their
best, be a credit to their families, to the schools and to enjoy the game. The youngest golfer, who was a student of Dick,
was a five-year-old. The oldest was 80.
The bronze sculpture will represent Dick’s great love for golf. He played courses throughout United States, as well as
other sites enjoying the opportunity to play with Pro Gary Player.
Representatives from the Country Club Board of Directors will be a part of the celebration, plus former athletes and
Cozad High School golfers.
A reception will follow the dedication, which is open to the public.

The Robert Henri Arts Festival will be held on June 25, 2016 from 10 am to 5 pm
at the Robert Henri Museum in Cozad, Nebraska. All levels of ability will be
highlighted, so performers may reserve stage space for 3 minutes up to 1 hour. We
will have a microphone, but performers are responsible for all instruments, amps,
etc. Space will be available if you have CDs or merchandise to sell. Please reserve
your spot by June 1. A performance schedule will be made after that date. If you
