Hot Weather Tips
Overheating (heat prostration) can kill an animal. Never leave an animal alone in a vehicle, since
even with the windows open, a parked car, truck or van can quickly become a furnace. Parking
in shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day. When traveling, carry a
gallon thermos filled with fresh, cold water.
Don’t force your animal to exercise after a meal in hot, humid weather. Always exercise him or
her in the cool of the early morning or evening.

In extremely hot weather, don’t leave your dog standing on the street, and keep walks to a
minimum. He is much closer to the hot asphalt and his body can heat up quickly. His paws can
burn since they are not protected by shoes.
Always provide plenty of shade for an animal staying outside the house. A properly
constructed dog house serves best. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day and
let her rest in a cool part of your house. Always provide plenty of cool, clean water for your
animal.

fosters, our animals get a
2nd chance.
Be sensitive to old and overweight animals in hot weather. Brach cephalic (snub-nosed) dogs
and those with heart or lung diseases should be kept indoors in air-conditioning as much as
possible.

Avoid walking your dog in areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other
chemicals, as poisonings increase during the summer when gardens, lawns and trees are
sprayed. These chemicals can sicken or kill an animal.

Be alert for coolant leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste of
coolant and ingesting just a small amount can cause an animal’s death. Consider using animalfriendly products that use propylene glycol rather than those containing ethylene glycol.
A clean coat can help to prevent summer skin problems, so keep your dog or cat well groomed.
If he has a heavy coat, shaving your dog’s hair to a 1-inch length will help prevent overheating.
Don’t shave a dog’s hair down to the skin; this robs him of protection from the sun. A cat
should be brushed frequently to keep his coat tangle-free.
Take your companion animal to the veterinarian for a spring or early
summer checkup, including a test for heartworm if your dog isn’t on yearround preventative medication. Consider Lymes vaccination if you spend
considerable time outdoors (1 tick can be responsible for the
Debilitating Lyme disease). Have the doctor recommend a safe,
effective flea and tick control program.

When Its Time to Say Good-bye
We first locked eyes, my Bailey and me, in the elevator of my building on East 89th
Street in Manhattan, and it was nothing short of love at first sight. A small, black
dog, who seemed to reflect the wisdom of the ages in his eyes, I asked the woman at
the other end of the leash if he was a Lab puppy. Seemingly thrilled at my apparent
interest, she replied, no; but rather a one-year-old.
She said her husband had found as a completely filthy, underweight, and shivering baby in the corner of a building near
Wall Street. She went on to say, that she was a doctor here from Canada for only a brief time and was returning to
her homeland within the next few weeks; hence he desperately needed a home. However, so enamored had she and her
husband become with this little black dog in just two days, that she had actually taken time off from work just to be
with him. Many religions believe in old souls, and if there ever was one it was Bailey.
It was September 1998, and I had put my beloved Lucy, (whom I’d adopted as a terribly abused little soul with a
crooked foot from the ASPCA in 1982), to sleep the year before and had another crazy little rescue, Skippy at home.
But there was something about Bailey that simply beckoned to my heart. Therefore, I told her I wanted him.
However, very unfortunately, so did her husband’s mother. I was devastated by this news. But three days later, I got
a call from her asking if I was still interested in this little angel. Apparently, her mother-in-law proved allergic, which
was the best news I could have possibly heard!
He was a quintessential gentleman from the start. Obviously ‘harshly’ toilet trained (much like myself…but that’s a
different story!), he would have rather been put on a steady diet of brussel sprouts than to ‘soil’ indoors. He walked
perfectly on the leash from the beginning, always minded his manners, was a terrific rider and flier and slept right
next to me every night I called him mine for over fifteen years – save a few emergency situations. He was my love,
my baby, and my very best friend. It was almost like a clock set us at the exact same tempo the moment we met; and
from that point on, our hearts beat in utter and complete synchronicity.
My precious Bailey saw me through many a trial. As the only child, (not only for my parents but for two aunts and
uncles, as well), he was right by side as they each left this world; one by one. Unwavering, every night – regardless of
that which occurred during the day – he was the one “steady force” I knew I could rely on.
So, the years went by and my children were rapidly growing up. But Bailey, as always, remained steadfast in his loyalty,
devotion, and totally unconditional love. By late 2000, my dear uncle was clearly dying. Having lost his wife the year
before, and with his only child, a daughter, nowhere to be found when the going got really tough, I stepped in and took
gentle and loving care of him during his last days and hours on this earth. Naturally, Bailey was with me for the
duration –four long, grueling days – until I finally held his hand, and said goodbye. In keeping with his completely loving
and overly devoted nature, Bailey gave him a kiss. And then it was over.
My mother had, in fact, been in the same nursing home the prior summer, and when Bailey arrived on the scene, he wanted
to visit/cheer up all of the patients; hence, he would jump from room to room spreading heartfelt joy. My mother followed suit
to the ‘other side’ shortly thereafter.
This all culminated in January of 2001. But with my darling Daddy then in a condo down by the river side seemingly content, I still
knew there was something missing. And so, weirdly, did my Bailey. 9/11 was the turning point. I just
understood, from my gut, that I needed my entire family close; and so, my Dad officially moved in with my
sons, Bailey, and me in Manhattan on November 12, 2001, after eighty years of having lived in Maine,
save the four years he served in the European theater during World War II. Perhaps the BEST
decision either of us ever made.

We had an extraordinary 8 year run together, and, Bailey, who always adored my father,
bonded even tighter with him. With the rest of the household gone during the day, my Dad
and Bailey became the closest of comrades; trudging life’s journey together.
Well, life went on, more or less blissfully, until one day in November, 2008. My Dad
had arrived at his internist’s office short of breathe. By the time I responded to his
call and arrived on the scene, I was instructed to take him directly to a cardiologist
on East 54th St.
After a few short tests and from the tone in his voice and melancholy expression in this doctor’s eyes, I knew he was
at the end of the road. After four more heartbreaking months, my darling Dad died on March 2, 2009 in my arms at
a wonderful hospice. Like me, Bailey (who, much to my chagrin, was then showing signs of age as evidenced in his now
grey and white whiskers), seemed to heavily grieve for him.
Fast forward to 2013. After months – probably more than twelve – of a persistent hacking cough (which proved to
be congestive heart failure) and the rapidly increasing inability to use his back legs, I knew it was time. Although
I’ve kept many of my dogs alive much longer than I should have, that was selfish and I vowed not to do so with Bailey.
After standing beside me through thick and thick for over fifteen years, he most definitely deserved an
expeditious and as pain free as possible flight to the other side.
Therefore, on February 12th of this year, I carried him in my arms over to our long-time vet, Dr. G., who’s just a
block away. I entered the room with him waited for the doctor to “put in a line”, and held him close to my heart. As
they administered the lethal dose, I whispered in his ear, “Run to Grampy. “ And I know with every fiber within me
that my precious Dad was on the other side, with arms wide open to catch him. With all confidence, I believe that
Bailey and my Dad have now resumed their daily walks in God’s green meadow, where it never rains or snows and the
sun shines eternally. For my sons (who are now grown) and me, life goes on. But I must admit I await the day when I
can, once again, blissfully join them on their walks.

MICHAEL who is a 3y M White/Red Mastiff/Hound X who is 48lbs is calm, affectionate and just bonds
with his human so nicely! He loves just being with his person no matter what they want to do! He
understands commands in both English and Spanish. Michael is a dream walker on the leash and
always looks up at you to check in for direction. He loves to roll over for belly rubs and is such A
LOVEBUG! He is housebroken and is very good with female dogs. A quiet neighborhood or even a
farm would be his perfect dream home!

Mae, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, it’s
a bird, it’s a plane, its DAISY MAE! Wonderful
compact little girl that is a die hard ball player and
lover of all. Please consider this gal for an active

Rrrrrrrreally ROSIE is a 4y F Choco Red Amstaff/Lab X who is a petite 45 lbs. She LOVES her
family and is loyal to all the "pack members." She is sweet, petite, energetic & super smart Rosie is
crate and housetrained and knows the commands: come, sit, stay, down, stay, paw, "ok"
release, and just starting to learn roll over She's such a good girl, but poor Rosie is nervous and
fearful with unknown situations. She is scared of strangers and other dogs so she’ll need an
experienced owner with patience to give her confidence she needs.
Tiggerona is the most loving and sweetest dog ever... she loves children and other dogs. She
does require a lot of playtime and exercise and would probably need more than 2-3 walks a
day. Anyone who adopters her will be lucky as she is loyal and super smart. She would make
an excellent running partner as she loves to run. She needs an active home, needs to be
taken out 5x a day to relieve herself, even if for a short period of time.

eye and one brown eye, she is a head turner! She is a happy girl

Clara is about 5 years old and front declawed. She was
surrendered to the shelter for the moving excuse. Clara
needs to be the only cat in the home as she is mostly afraid
of other cats. She can be happily by herself for long periods,
making her ideal for a busy person who still wants a pet. She
should go to someone who has had a bit of cat experience as
she takes a little while to get used to her person. Once she
does she is super nice & very low maintenance
Honor is a young Maine
Coon type kitty. She is less
than 2 years old and would
be best as the only cat in
the home. She is best for a
home without young
children and for an adopter
that has had cats before.
Juno is a year and a half and lives with a
large dog he likes to play with. He is very
loving once he is used to his person. He is
best in a home with other active pets as he
loves to play. After all he is a young boy
really just a teenager.

think you can help him. Leo is a young cat only about 1 year old. He was found
outside in a bad neighborhood and is quite fearful. Something bad happened to
him. He is living in a cage & will not come out . He may be afraid of the human in
the home and also the more dominant cats. Leo is not aggressive but needs to
be approached with care because of the fear. If you have patience and can help,
please do contact us so Leo can begin a new life.
Sweetie is a mature girl whose owners
cruelly left her at the shelter because they
were moving. She is a big kitty, very sweet
hence the name. GREAT with cats and
dogs and pretty unflappable!

To Many
The dog is surrendered through no fault of its own. An owner’s emotion hits
hard in some cases. It’s personal to them.
This dog fails to adjust to what just transpired, noisy shelter, no walks,
sprayed out cage. Handled in this way due to sheer volume of
irresponsible owners in most cases. It’s personal to volunteers who try to
walk as many as they can daily to keep the animal from going out of its
mind.
This dog was someone’s pet at one time and now her life hangs in the
balance. Time and real estate at the shelter are precious and the clock
ticks. It’s personal to the staff handling these animals daily seeing and
knowing they would make a wonderful pet for someone.
Stress takes hold if she sits too long in this environment. Shock sets in her
body and her immune system fails. Kennel cough abounds or cage
aggression presents itself. It’s now personal to the dog as its days
become numbered.
No adoption interest comes, her cough worsens, she is added to “the list”.
No time nor money can be put towards this animal now as there are others,
many others to follow in her path. It’s personal to the administrator.
The rescues see this dog, of perfect evaluation, sweet personality, wagging
tail under duress. Time is of the essence to find a foster or adopter to save
this creature that has the resume to be a good family dog. It’s personal to
rescue organizations.
The shelter advocate spreads the word in last desperation to save this
perfect pet who, given the chance, could enrich a family. It’s personal to
her.
The vet techs prepares to administer the fatal injection. It’s personal to
them, time and again never taken lightly. A job which exists where humans
failed to be responsible in many cases. Its not the facility who is at fault.
The day of the “black out period” waiting to hear if she made it out, if a
savior came by foster or adoption or if she was walked to the euthanasia
room for processing. The afternoon comes, status is posted -“Gone
6/13/2013”
Now its personal to me for this is how I obtained my best
friend. Please share….Adopt from a Shelter . Its personal to the Breed
A result of lack of adoptions, reckless
breeding and stress in the shelter. The
news stings as she deserved a loving fun
home – many knew this.

Buying a ticket for you and your friend helps keep Zani’s Furry Friends in operation to save more lives and
continue the hard pressed work performed by this group. Donations go towards vet costs, medical emergencies,
pet supplies and boarding. This group relies heavily on its donations to stay in operation and save the
unwanteds of NYC.
November 2013 proves to be another “night to remember”!
This is no "ordinary show", this show has TV talent, Broadway stars
and is truly a great bang for the buck.

"kindred spirits" of the rescue world!
It was an event to remember taking place on May 4th at
Birdland Jazz Club
I had the pleasure of meeting Carol Demas. Does anyone
remember “The Magic Garden?”. A childhood favorite of mine for
sure….well, Carol was more than talented. She starred as Sandy in
“Grease” on Broadway for many years, Carol graciously helped with
Zani’s memorable event as did many other stars! Come join us in
November and see who else shows up!
