One of the pleasures of dealing books is assisting a collector in building their
library. I’m never without my list of “wants” from clients. Conversely, it is bittersweet when a collector and friend calls to explore options of disbursing their
collection. This catalogue features books from the collection of Mike Ford. Not
only did Mike build a fine Colorado Plateau/River collection, he also authored The
Books of the Grand Canyon, The Colorado River, the Green River & the Colorado Plateau—a Selected Bibliography. To him we owe a great debt. Working
with Mike was a pleasure. Hours spent in Mike and Kay’s house examining his
collection was punctuated by the many stories and anecdotes of his many trips to
the plateau and the acquisition of his library.
The finest testimony of a collection is the attention it receives from other collectors and institutions when it reaches the marketplace. In Mike’s case, the majority of his collection was purchased by a research library in Colorado. But there
were some duplicates and many of these are featured here in catalogue #11.
Thanks Mike, and let me know when the collecting bug bites again!
This catalogue also features a small collection of Arctic titles. We will take possession of the bulk of this collection in a few weeks so look for many more Arctic
exploration titles in the next catalogue and at the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair in
October.

Mike Ford was my mentor, not only in book collecting, but in the “art” of
camping. He and I both taught at the same high school in Lee’s Summit,
Missouri, and in 1980 we found that we were both interested in hiking
and camping in, as well as the history of, the Colorado Plateau of southern
Utah and northern Arizona. Both of us also collected books on the plateau
region. It was Mike who first introduced me to the catalogues of such
notable booksellers as Arthur H. Clark, G. F. Hollingsworth, and others.
Unlike myself, Mike really collected. Whenever possible he would look for
first editions, signed editions, and books with their original dust jackets.
Over the years, from the 1960s until just a year or so ago, Mike put together
one of the finest collections of books, specializing in the Colorado River and
the Grand Canyon. He became especially close, not only as a client but
also as a friend, to Dave Hellyer and Dan Cassidy, successive owners of
Five Quail Books. His collection ultimately numbered in the thousands.
This past summer Mike finally disposed of the bulk of his extensive
Colorado Plateau collection to another good friend, Andy Nettell of Back
of Beyond Books in Moab, Utah. Mike’s loss (though that is not really an
accurate word to use) is a book-lover’s gain, with many of his books now
being available to the reading public for their edification and enjoyment.

The Moravian Church established missions in colonies worldwide starting in the 1700s. Torngak was
a local Inuit spirit. Top edge of spine and a few corners are significantly bumped. Dark green cloth
boards with black and gilt accents. Previous owner bookplates on endpapers. Text is clean, spine
splitting in a few places but holding together.

Gilder was a New York Herald journalist who accompanied the expedition to find the lost Jeannette.
Three maps, including one fold-out at rear which is in very good condition. Pictorial green cloth
boards rubbed on edges, corners are lightly bumped, a bit of mild soil overall. One signature towards
rear is splitting, but otherwise binding is tight. Several bookplates from previous owners, otherwise
interior is clean. Spine a bit darkened.

spine. Edges are rubbed, corners bumped and starting to fray a bit. Interior is free of markings, two
bookplates on front endpaper. A few areas of text block are slightly dampstained. Book shaken but
binding intact.

Contemporary burgundy leather binding. Corners and edges are rubbed. Top corner of binding
on volume 2 is pulled slightly from spine. Gold gilt embossed lines on front and spine with title and
author embossed in gilt on spine. Owners name in gilt on front, Mrs. Thomas Dunlap. Thomas
Dunlap was a noted Philadelphia lawyer and studied law with Elisha Kane. Marbled endpapers.
Signed and inscribed by Kane in volume 1 to Mrs. Thomas Dunlap. All edges in gold gilt. Interior of
book in fabulous condition with 18 engraved plates with tissue guards, 1 large folding map, folding
isotherm chart, 2 maps in text plus 2 engraved frontis’ and 2 engraved title pages. Kane returned a
hero even though he failed to find a trace of Franklin. Kane signatures are not common.

Canada. Fold-out map of the territory negotiated by the 8th treaty. Brown cloth boards are rubbed on
edges, corners are rubbed and starting to fray. Hinges are splitting.

11. A Narrative of the Discovery of the Fate of Sir John Franklin and His Companions

Captain McClintock led a 1857 expedition to locate explorer John Franklin and crew, who were lost
in 1845 attempting to find the Northwest Passage. Eventually, more ships were lost in looking for
Franklin’s expedition than were originally lost to begin with. All maps and figures accounted for,
including map in rear board pocket. Previous owner bookplates and inscription on mildly-soiled
endpapers. Text is clean and free of markings. Some creasing to fold-out maps. Colbalt blue cloth
boards are darkened on spine; edges and corners of boards are rubbed, bumped. A few loosening
signatures, rear hinge is split halfway.

Two works in one volume, pertaining to early European expeditions in the Arctic. Six plates are all
present. Quarter leather over marbled boards, split along gutters, corners starting to fray. Binding is
cracking in a few places but is holding. Edges of text block stained a faint red. Text is foxed in places
but otherwise free of markings. Previous owner bookplates on front endpaper.

Large Paper Edition, limited, 192/550. In the spring of 1881, John Muir boarded the steamship Corwin
for a voyage of over 15,000 nautical miles into treacherous Arctic seas to search for Captain G. W.
De Long and his ship. While De Long was never found, Muir’s account of the expedition captures the
mystery of the farthest reaches of the northern frontier. Green paper boards with darker cloth spine
are lightly soiled with a few markings, rubbed on edges. Previous owners’ bookplates, otherwise
interior is free of markings.

One volume concerns quadupeds, the other birds. Welsh naturalist Pennant originally conceived
of these as “North American Zoology” but changed the title and focus after the loss of the
British colonies. Two large quarto volumes, have been rebacked. All plates as called for, without
supplemental volume. Page 551 extra-illustrated. Original leather-covered boards are starting to fray
on corners, edges and gilt accents are rubbed. Previous owner bookplates on marbled endpapers.

Tovar, from C. A. Higgins’ “Titan of Chasms,” “Dreams of mountains, as in their sleep they brood on
things eternal.” Interior is clean.

A true rarity. From Farquhar, “The Books of the Colorado River & The Grand Canyon” 29: “Berton,
Swiss consul at San Francisco, journeyed overland to Yuma and the Gila River country. He published
his account in an edition of 50 copies for the benefit of his friends. He acknowledges the courtesy of
R.J. Hinton for the use of some of the lithograph stones of the plates in the latter’s ‘The Hand-Book
of Arizona,’ New York, 1878. Several of the plates in Berton’s book are from his own sketches or
photographs, notably a photograph of the steamer ‘Cocopah.’” Only 50 copies, privately printed as
gifts. Appears at acution about once every ten years. No copies noted in institutional holdings, this is
one of the scarcest titles in the Farquhar bibliography and a treasure for any Colorado River collector.
Bright cobalt blue cloth with gilt title. Boards rubbed on edges; corners and head/foot of spine are
bumped. Endpapers toned, pages are clean and free of markings. Folding map at rear is not present
and is often lacking in this volume; facsimile map tipped-in.

Dellenbaugh was the artist and assistant topographer for the second Powell expedition down the
Green and Colorado Rivers from Wyoming in 1871-72, later writing several accounts of his trip.
Beautiful pictorial boards bumped on corners, lightly rubbed. Previous owner name on first free
endpaper. Pages are clean. Several fold-out maps. Light soil to exterior of text block.

Later republished under the name “A Mad, Crazy River,” this account is of two trips down the
Colorado, led by the appropriately-named Eddy. Eddy was interested in proving that “pink-wristed”
college boys were able to take on the same challenges as seasoned explorers. Along with his
inexperienced crew, Eddy took along a dog and a bear cub. Farquhar 55a. Cloth boards are rubbed
on corners, lightly soiled. Small sticker from previous bookseller on rear endpaper, otherwise interior
is clean, binding tight.

copy came directly from Mike Ford’s library as did quite a few other books in this catalogue. Thanks
Mike for all the great stories and the years of work that went into this bibliography. He really did read
every book!

31-year old Barry Goldwater accompanied a Norm Nevills trip from Green River, UT to Lake Mead in
July and August of 1940. Typed manuscript with no photos, dated September 1940. Interior is free of
markings. Paper wraps have pieces torn away along creased edges.

In 1940, a 31-year old Barry Goldwater joined one of the Nevills’ river expeditions, launching in Green
River, UT and traveling all the way through to the Grand Canyon. Bits and pieces of his journal and
photographs were published elsewhere, with this being the first complete publication. Signed on front

how strange the landscape must have looked to these early explorers. Twelve full-page engravings,
one profile, seven striking color plates, 41 woodcuts, and four maps including the two scarce shaded
geologic maps. The majority of volumes only contain two maps. Rebacked using original spine and

Trail” and “Two Worlds.” This limited, self-published memoir was printed for his family and friends
at a 2000 reunion. Included are stories of serving in the military, river-running, and exploring the
canyon country. Pages are unnumbered, chapters out of order, typos throughout. Inscribed by
author to previous owners, with signed correspondence. Book is inscribed, and letter addressed, to
“Ken,” which has the potential to be Ken Sleight given references to the river and sidekicks, and the
frequency with which he appears in the book. Over this and in an additional note Short says that he
accidentally set two aside for Ken, and the book has an additional inscription to another friend. In any
case, a scarce copy of unpublished stories that can’t be found anywhere else. Gently read with very
little wear.

This set of the Tertiary History is from ‘The Miscellaneous Documents of the House of
Representatives For the Second Session of the Forty-Eighth Congress 1884-’85”. Also includes the
typical title page from the USGS Monograph series, this being Volume II, 1885 plus the standard
Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District title page following. Atlas contains all twenty-three sheets
including title-page and table of contents. 12 color maps, 10 color views, including the 4 stunning
William Henry Holmes views and the Thomas Moran view. These five have been tastefully matted and
framed. Photos upon request. The remaining plates remain laid loose, as issued, in the atlas binder.
This Atlas is the less common quarto volume with all plates folded in thirds with the folded dimensions
being 11 1/4” x 9”. The plate folds remain strong with slightly more wear at the corners. The Moran
plate shows slight separation at one corner. The 3/4 leather folder has original titles on spine laid over
new spine. The boards show rubbing and edgewear; the ties are extinguished. The monograph has
been re-backed. The original boards are spotted with rubbing to the edges. Interior is very clean with
tissues present with the plates. Endpapers are browned on the fore edge and fragile on that edge.
Farquhar calls this “One of the greatest, if not the very greatest of all Grand Canyon books. The atlas,
containing the superb panoramic views by William H. Holmes and a drawing by Thomas Moran, is a
rich portfolio of art as well as a collection of maps and an exposition of geology.” Farquhar 73.

Classic early work on the geology of the Colorado Plateau, encompassing the Grand Canyon but also
parts of Bryce and Zion. One of the first monographs published by the USGS, in 1882. Introduction
by Wallace Stegner, who praises Dutton’s literary style. Limited edition 1977 reprint, with scarce
prospectus. Monograph and atlas are quarter leather on linen, both in illustrated hardcover slipcases.
Monograph is tight and square, very little wear to edges. All 23 unbound plates of atlas (including title
page) are present. Some mild creasing at corners and along edges of a few plates. Atlas slipcase is
torn on two few corners, with some attempted tape repairs.

Rarely seen. John Albert Scorup arrived from Salina, Utah in 1891, without a single cow, and
began cattle operations in White Canyon near the present day location of Natural Bridges National
Monument. Eventually in 1926 he formed the Scorup - Somerville Cattle Company, combining the
White Canyon herds with several from near Indian Creek. Scorup managed the company until his
death in 1959. At its largest, the company’s herds ranged from as far north as Hart’s Draw near
the Needles district of Canyonlands, down south to the San Juan River, and numbered 7,000 10,000 head. This biography was written by his sister, who blatantly states that she has “not even
attempted to present his life objectively.” A scarce piece of canyon country history—only nine copies
listed in OCLC. Inscription by J.A. Scorup to previous owners on front endpaper, dated Christmas
1944. Photographs throughout show family members, ranching operations, and scenery. Light wear
to dark red cloth boards, interior clean, binding tight. A photocopied article from a 1997 New York
Times is laid in, encased in a protective sleeve, and concerns the sale of the Dugout Ranch to the
Nature Conservancy. Originally founded in 1885, the ranch became a headquarters for the Scorup Somerville operation, and is still managed today by the family who acquired it in 1967.
