White Paper: LazerBrite Modular Lighting System
Product Overview:
The LazerBrite modular lighting system provides a versatile solution for controllable personal
lighting and marking systems. The LazerBrite is designed as a fully modular system to
accommodate multiple modes of operation and color selection. Comprised of two independent
LED lights and one translucent tube, one LazerBrite tactical light can emulate a chemical light,
function as a wide-angled flashlight, separate into two different lights, and produce a focused spot
light.
This versatile functionality is accomplished through the reversible LED head technology that
allows screw-on attachment of the LED light either pointing into or away from the translucent
tube. In addition, the modular lighting system can be attached to an additional LazerBrite unit to
function as a signal baton for marshaling ground traffic. These tactical lights are available in 6
visible colors plus a super bright infrared for use during tactical operations. A wide variety of
accessories are available to further enhance the system capabilities some of them are described
below. The Iris Light Control Tube creates a focused spot, with or without side light emission.
The Iris has an adjustable aperture capable of a maximum opening of just under half the tube and
close down to a tiny spec of light or anywhere in between. The Helix Attachment Loop provides
an amazingly versatile, yet simple method for attaching LB lights to almost anything.
Illuminating Map Cases, Landing zone/drop zone (LZ / DZ) kits for vehicle platform marking,
roadway (e.g. vehicle control points or supply route designations), or landing zone markings.
Additional accessories include Magnetic bases, tactical Pouches, and other attachment devises.
The LazerBrite system provides significant advantages over existing lighting systems including
improved functionality, load weight reductions, significant cost savings, improved user safety and
major reduction in environmental impact of spent one time use chemical lights. These critical
considerations differentiate the LazerBrite from traditional lighting systems and improve the
capabilities/safety for the user. This functionality is achieved at lower monetary and weight costs.
Applications:
The LazerBrite modular lighting system provides the versatility to accomplish a wide range of
functionalities. These include, but are not limited to map reading, traditional flashlight
applications, vehicle/personnel marking, landing zone markings, signaling, and safety and traffic
control applications.
Key Features:
The LazerBrite modular lighting system has several key features that set this system apart.
·
The LED lights are available in a Single Mode (high beam) or Multi-lux (low-high or
flashing beam. The Single Mode LED head provide a continuous source of high beam light. The
Multi-lux light provides three different lighting options: a continuous low beam, a continuous high
beam, or a flashing beam of light. The Single Mode or Multi-lux LED heads can be interchanged
to accommodate the specific application.
·
The LED lights are available in seven different color selections including white, red,
green, blue, orange, yellow, and infrared. The LED lights do not interfere with night vision
devices. The infrared LED light provides tactical lighting capabilities that are only visible through
night vision devices.
·
Unlike traditional chemical lights, LazerBrite can be turned on and off providing vital
control during operational scenarios.
·
The “Iris” accessory is a black tube with a translucent window. An outer sheath on the
black tube rotates to increase or decrease the amount of window shown. This allows the operator
to optimize the amount of light visible based on the specific mission requirements.
·
The LED bulbs are visible from over one mile away providing adequate lighting for
vehicle, roadway, or landing zone applications. · LazerBrite is submersible to 50m. · The
LazerBrite lighting system is reusable with extended battery durations.
All LazerBrite heads will run for days on a single set of batteries. On average, for all colors including
IR, a user has about 75 hrs of “usable light” in each head, with each set of batteries. Therefore, one
LazerBrite red/green can provide about 300 hours of light (2 LED heads & 2 sets of batteries for each).
LazerBrite comes complete with two sets of CR-2032 batteries; one loaded in the LazerBrite system
and a strip of four replacement batteries packed in the same materials used for MREs (for easy field
use). A note on “usable light” and battery life: All LazerBrite colors decline in brightness at different
rates based on the specific current draw required by each color (wavelength) of light and the human
eyes sensitivity to each color. “Usable Light” is determined by the user’s specific needs and is
situation dependent. We strive to give conservative numbers on burn times. We have had many
warfighters report that they used one LazerBrite package for their entire tour down range and never
needed more batteries. When asked how that can be, their basic answer is “I turn it on and off as
needed and it takes a long time to use up the batteries.”
·
Based on Panasonics published information, disposal of CR-2032 batteries does not
require specialized hazardous material procedures, making this system more environmentally
friendly than other options.
·
The complete LazerBrite unit weighs less than 3 ounces.
·
The LazerBrite system is made in the USA.
Benefits:
The LazerBrite modular lighting system provides several benefits over existing technology
solutions. One LazerBrite can replace hundreds of chemical lights reducing the overall load and
providing significant cost benefits. Traditionally, chemical lights are transported by the case in
multiple color combinations. The reusable and modular nature of the LazerBrite system reduces
the amount of lights required, thereby reducing weight.
This also translates into a significant cost savings. As an example, if a warfighter used one chem
light for ten minutes every night to signal a supply drop, he would use a chem light each night. If a
LazerBrite green/green were used instead, the warfighter could get over 1,800 ten minute signals
(using each head independently and both sets of batteries) from that one LazerBrite package, at
which point the LazerBrite system is still usable, it just requires more batteries. Chem light cost
for 1,800 ten minute markers is over $3,500.00 (approx. $2.00 ea.) and creates 1,800 dead chem
lights, 1,800 chem light packages, plus the fuel and logistics to transport them. Comparing these
chem light costs to the LazerBrite cost of about $30.00 - $40.00 per system yields significant cost
savings. We believe the use of the LazerBrite system could remove about 70% of the chemical
lights currently used by the military.
An additional benefit associated with the LazerBrite system is improved efficient use of light
capacity. When a warfighter cracks a 12 hour green chem light and only uses it for five minutes
(i.e. buries it as the only way to turn it off for light discipline), he/she has just buried about 99.4 %
of the light capacity (and therefore the cost) in the sand. This is addressed in the LazerBrite
system through the on/off functionality and reusability features.
The system also improves safety particularly through high visibility, effective marking systems
which can be controlled instantaneously. Traditional chemical lights cannot be turned off,
requiring additional time to hide or bury the light if needed. The LazerBrite lighting system
eliminates these dangerous situations by allowing the user to control the light’s functionality.
Not only does the LazerBrite lighting system provide an extended battery life, disposal of
LazerBrite batteries does not require specialized hazardous material procedures. This provides
advantages over existing system resulting in a more environmentally friendly option with air
travel restrictions or specialized storage.
