CaddyStacks Fundraiser
Join us on Sunday, November 8th
for our second annual putt-putt
fundraiser, benefiting the Friends
of the Chatham Area Public Library!
From 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the library
will be transformed into 9 holes of
family fun. Special events include, "Beat the Celebrity,"
where participants will have a chance to win if they
can beat radio personality, Greg Bishop. Snacks will
also be available. Those who plan to attend should
arrive no later than 3 p.m. so they have enough time
to complete their round. Cost is $5 per person and
refreshments will be on sale during the event.
The library is currently seeking sponsorships. The cost
is $100 per hole. For more information, call the Library
or visit our website (www.chathamlib.org). Funds
collected by CaddyStacks will help benefit technology
needs for the library, that includes resources to
enhance the computer lab.

Stories from the Stacks
I own Changing Faces hair salon and
belong to the SCGC (Springfield Civic
Garden Club). I had a feeling I wasn’t
using my iPad to its full potential, so I
called Meghan at my library. Meghan
is one of our reference librarians that
anyone can schedule time through a
service called, “Book-a-Librarian.”
She said bring your iPad in and promised we’d figure it
out together. She spent an hour helping me navigate
through various applications which would allow me to
help design a web presence for my business and
projects for the Garden Club. A big thank you to Meghan!

This series, taught by Anne Godman, will provide basic

CRAFT THING!
We’re trying something new for our
craft group! We meet the third
Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Join us as we make a group craft no need to bring anything besides
yourself! A limited number of seats are available;
call the library to reserve your spot.
October 20th – We will make a fall wreath that is
wrapped in burlap and is accented with a large
sunflower; perfect for autumn.
November 17th – Our November craft
will be Sharpie mugs. Each person will
use Sharpie pens to decorate two
mugs.
December 15th – Join us as we decoupage a picture
frame. We’ll use patterned paper and old book pages
to transform a plain frame into a cute decoration.
Tuesday Evening Book Group
We meet the second Tuesday of each month at
6:00 p.m. where we discuss a mixture of fiction and
nonfiction books. Everyone is welcome to join us! Our
next books are:
October 13th – Fooling Houdini: magicians,
mentalists, math geeks, & the hidden powers of
the mind by Alex Stone (2012). Stone recounts his
quest to join the ranks of master magicians. But his
journey is more than a tale of tricks, gigs, and geeks. In
trying to understand how expert magicians manipulate
our minds to create their illusions, Stone investigates
some of the lesser-known corners of psychology,
neuroscience, physics, history, and even crime.
November 10th – Devil in the White City: murder,
magic, and madness at the fair that changed
America by Erik Larson (2003). An account of the
Chicago World's Fair of 1893 relates the stories of
two men who shaped the history of the event—
architect Daniel H. Burnham, who coordinated its
construction, and serial killer Herman Mudgett.
December 8th – The Martian by Andy Weir (2014).
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney was one of the
first people to walk on Mars. Now, he'll be the first
person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him
and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him
dead, Mark is stranded alone with no way to even
signal Earth. Even if he could, he wouldn't last until
rescue arrived. Either way, the environment or human
error will likely kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to
give up yet.
Identity Theft Prevention
Tuesday, November 3, 6:00 p.m.
Lanae Clark from the Illinois Comptroller’s office will
present on the types of frauds and scams that are
prevalent, provide tips on how to prevent identity theft,
and what to do if you have been hacked. She will also
talk about the new smart chip in credit cards and how it
can be more helpful against fraud.
Adult Programs
Healthy Habits for a Healthier You
Wednesday, October 7th, 6:00 p.m.
For centuries, we’ve known
that the health of the
brain and the body are
connected. But now, science
is able to provide insights
into how to optimize our
physical and cognitive health
as we age. Join us to learn
about research in the areas
of diet and nutrition, exercise,
cognitive activity and social engagement, and use
hands-on tools to help you incorporate these
recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. This
program is a presentation of the Greater Illinois
Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Author Talk with Paul McDevitt
Wednesday, November 4th, 6:00 p.m.
Paul McDevitt is an emeritus professor
in the Business Administration program
at UIS where he taught and researched
for twenty-five years before retiring in
2009. He was searching for something
useful to do with himself when his
family gave him "the box" and—soon
thereafter—a new job: writing “All Came
Home.” The book is about his father, a junior reserve
officer, during WWII. Paul pieces his father's story
together from 85 letters written by his father during the
war plus five years of research to write the book. Paul
lives in Springfield with his wife Barb. This is his first
book. Books will be available for purchase.

October 19th:
Mr. Penumbra’s
24-Hour Bookstore
by Robin Sloan
The Great Recession has
shuffled Clay Jannon
away from life as a San
Francisco web-design
drone and into the aisles
of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few
days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more
curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might
suggest.
November 16th: Stranger in a Strange Land
by Robert Heinlein
Heinlein's masterpiece. The brilliant novel that grew
from a cult favorite to a bestseller to a classic in a few
short years. It is the story of Valentine Michael Smith,
the man from Mars who taught humankind grokking
and water-sharing. And love.
December 21st: Plucker by Brom
In this shadowy land of make-believe, Jack and his
box are stuck beneath the bed with the dust, spiders,
and other castaway toys, and forced to face a bitter
truth: Children grow up, and toys are left behind.
When the Plucker, a malevolent spirit, is set loose
upon the world of make-believe, Jack is thrust into the
unlikely role of defending Thomas, the very child who
abandoned him.
The Outer Edge meets on the Third Monday of
each month at 6 p.m. in the library. We require no
commitment – come for one meeting or come for them
all. Find us on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/OuterEdge

raking leaves, and carving pumpkins. Remember to
set aside some time for relaxing and reading! The

st
October 21 : Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
This wonderful novel intertwines two
lives; one is a wealthy 91 year old
woman, Vivian, who was sent to
Minnesota on an orphan train as a
young girl; the other is Molly, who is
only 17 and has been bounced from
one foster home to another. As the
two clean out boxes in Vivian’s attic,
they compare stories and unexpectedly become good friends…a very
educational and heartwarming read!
November 18th: In the Unlikely
Event by Judy Blume
When three planes crash in a small
town in New Jersey over the course
of just two months, residents are
understandably terrified! Blume tells
the intimate stories within these
larger events, as the people cope
with loss and “the sudden fame that
horrible tragedy brings.” (Amazon)
December 16th: A New York Christmas by Anne Perry
Set in New York City in 1904, this
suspenseful novel tells of a wedding
that will join two fabulously wealthy
families and the mysteries surrounding
this grand family event. Be ready for a
moving Christmas story and a delightful
holiday treat!
The book group meets in the library conference
room at noon on the 3rd Wednesday of each

lively discussion. If you would like to attend, please
call the library, and we will try to get each month’s
book for you.

up a week due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays. Please email [email protected] for more
information.
Midday Movies
We screen the Midday Movie on the second
Wednesday of each month at 2:00 pm in the
Conference Room. The movies are free to attend, open
to everyone, and snacks are provided. This fall, we are
watching movies with historical schemes at the forefront.
October 14th — Anonymous (2011) Starring Rhys
Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave. Anonymous speculates
on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics
and brilliant minds: who was the author of the plays
credited to William Shakespeare?
November 11th — The Conspirator (2011) Starring
Robin Wright and James McAvoy. In the wake of
Abraham Lincoln's assassination, seven men and one
woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill
the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State.
The story follows a lawyer who reluctantly agrees to
defend the lone female defendant before a military
tribunal.
December 9th — Valkyrie (2008) Starring Tom Cruise
and Kenneth Branagh. A proud military man, Colonel
Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his
country all the while hoping that someone will find a way
to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed.

The Library Board of Trustees Thanks
Eric Fitzgerald for 10 Years of Service
Library Board President, Eric Fitzgerald decided to
step down at the Board's August meeting, after ten
years of service. Eric was appointed to the board in
2005 and elected President in 2010. During that time,
Eric has been instrumental in assisting with the building
expansion that began in 2006 and ended in 2009. In
addition he was a strong advocate for the Friends of
the Library participating in their annual Murder Mystery
