Moreover, the educators also talk to the families and try to help them with problems. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The kids go to the center after school, here they have a lunch, and they receive support with homework. When they finish it, they have sports; with a football coach, basketball team, and volleyball championships. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The center is located in the southern part of Quito, in Fundeportes, a low resource area where many kids do not study for several problems. Instead of going to school, these kids become street vendors. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer has to have basic knowledge of Spanish and the best attitude to work with kids. It is also a plus if 3 the volunteer have experience playing any of the sports practiced in Golazo. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will have to help taking care of the kids. Supporting them in math, language, social studies among others subject homework. Also, the volunteer will have to help serving and organizing food for kids. An enrolment in extra activities such as football and basket is also expected from the volunteer. Finally, visiting the families of the kids, giving them support, talking to them, giving them advises is also another duty of the volunteer. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT CAMBUGAN LOCATION Cambugán Foundation headquarters in Quito is located in Santa Prisca Parish in Barrio Pambachupa situated between Barrios La Gasca and houses in the streets Atacames N26-48 and Humberto Albornoz. TYPE OF PROJECT Environmental Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT This project seeks to raise awareness among students about the environmental crisis that the planet faces and also seeks to provide tools for the creation of nature 4 clubs in educational institutions, all linked to field trips to Antisana Ecological Reserve located in the Parish of Píntag . PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Schedule: de 9:30 a 16:30 including hours for lunch (6 hours a day). Activities in the project: Contact with the educational institutes Delivery of trades Meetings with officials of Educational Institutions Environmental Education Workshops Field Trips Monitoring and evaluation of the formation of nature clubs. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The area of Cambugan office is particularly quiet area with regular police presence since Quito Regiment is located in Barrio Las Casas and a few blocks from the office. There is also a security brigade neighborhood that has a police checkpoint. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Language: required spoken Spanish 40%, writing 30%. Voluntter must like walking, doing group activities outdoors in the field Love working with children and adolescents. 5 Like training in environmental issues related to rural communities One who likes making public speeches Willing to travel between town and country Sociable willing to work in groups based on the establishment of liability agreements Easy to identify problems and seek solutions in performance of job duties Friendly, honest, likes to support the conservation and management of natural resources Willing to adapt to simple living conditions devoid of luxuries and not to consume alcohol, drugs and cigarettes. Age: 18 to 30 years VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Contacts with educational institutions where the workshops were held. Guided tours to the propagation nursery specializing in native and visits to Antisana Ecological Reserve. Collaboration in the planning and implementation of environmental education workshops. Assessment and monitoring of the formation of ecological clubs in schools. Reporting monthly work. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family/ volunteer’s house in the project 6 NAME OF THE PROJECT CASA REFUGIO MATILDE LOCATION South Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Gender/Youth AIMS OF THE PROJECT Casa Refugio Matilde provides integral attention to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and must leave their home. Children cannot be housed independently from their mothers. Their refuge provides food, shelter, psychological and legal support. Also a social worker. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The shelter can house up to 35 people (mix of mothers and their children). There are also workshops concerning domestic violence, self-esteem, family relationship, sexuality, team work, etc. Their main purpose is to support the empowerment and autonomy of the women who seek help. COMMUNITY CONTEXT In Ecuador, domestic violence is often thought of as ¨normal¨ and therefore ignored. However, it is a physical and mental health problem that considerably affects the lives of all family members. The shelter is located in the south of Quito, a strategic location to distance the victims from their aggressors. 7 Office in the north of Quito. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS It is indespensable that the volunteers share visions of solidarity, are committed, do not have prejudices, and are creative and proactive. They should have basic Spanish skills. An added benefit is that they can lead arts or music activities. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer can participate in a variety of tasks at the shelter, depending on experience and interests. These are: teaching the children while their mothers are at visits and workshops, helping with the workshops and events. Hospital PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Apart from the medical treamtments a positive social process of healing is essential in the care of children, from playing with them and providing comfort etc to being a support 8 in hard times and situations that can be hard to understand for the kids themselves. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The hospital is located in the middle of the city center in Quito and is the kids hospital of Quito. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer should be patient, loving, caring, interested in children, and a positive influence on the environment and contact with children. This is vital since most of them are going through tough times. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will help to take care of the children, in those everyday activities they have knowledge and know-how to support, play with the children and providing confort. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT TIERRA NUEVA LOCATION South of Quito THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education/Health AIMS OF THE PROJECT The foundation provides education and health care to about four hundred children (6 months to five years old) in two day care centers. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The daycare centers are open Monday- 9 Friday from 8 am-5 pm. Besides being in classes, the children receive three daily meals and medical attention. The children receive classes in arts and crafts, physical education and music. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Fundación Tierra Nueva is located in the south of Quito. The children come from low income families. The institution’s role focuses on the sustainable development of the families. It works in the social, educational, cultural, technologic and economic development in order to achieve good conditions of life, and physical, economical, emotional and spiritual well-being. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteers must like children, and be flexible with their actions and thinking. They must have a kind, happy and collaborative personality. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteers will assist with the classroom activities and with the institution programs. The volunteer’s routine consists in supporting the feeding, care, recreation and pedagogic activities. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 10 NAME OF THE PROJECT WORKING BOYS CENTER LOCATION Quito; Cotocollao (north of Quito) and La Marin (historical center) TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Youth AIMS OF THE PROJECT Working Boys Center (Centro Muchacho Trabajador) provides education and technical training to working street children and their families. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Basic education (high school degree) for all members of the family, but while allowing the children to maintain their jobs on the street (selling gum, shining shoes, etc). Then, once they get the high school diploma, they can specialize in a variety of subjects from mechanics to sewing to carpentry. COMMUNITY CONTEXT This organization was founded by retired Catholic priests over 45 years ago. It is extremely well structured with great staff. The center has served over 3,000 families and is one of the most well known organizations in Latin America. In Quito there are two centers: one in the historical center and the bigger one in the north of Quito. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Good level of English, hard working, proactive. 11 VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Teach various subjects/ages depending on interest (day care, English, computation, adult education, etc), help in one of the technical areas (carpentry, mechanics, sewing), play sports, help in communal areas such as the library. HOSTING SITUATION In the CMT in the North of Quito there is a big volunteer house. Every year there are volunteers from the USA (ages 22-25) who also do long term volunteering and stay at this house. If you live at the center there are reflections on Tuesdays after dinner with the “padres y madres”. You will have a private room with a private bathroom. There is internet in the house and you have 3 daily meals at the center (you can also make your own food if you want). NAME OF THE PROJECT HERMANOS MIGUEL LOCATION Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Disabled AIMS OF THE PROJECT Hermanos Miguel is a rehabilitation center for physically disabled children and adults. They aim to provide medical care and rehabilitation services to the disadvantaged. 12 PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES They provide all types of services, such as general medical care and therapy, to occupational therapy and speech therapy. COMMUNITY CONTEXT This is a very structured center that has been running for over 25 years. It is part of a network in Quito to improve the services available for physically disabled people. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS There are no requirements to work here, although volunteers with a background/ specialty in certain areas (such as occupational/speech therapy) will be more involved in those specific areas. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteers without experience: serve as ushers and help for the patients in tasks such as mobilization, Center guides, research, patient exercises (with guide of therapists), elaborate didactic and informative material, and logistical and administrative help. Volunteers with experience/specialty: Direct intervention with patients, while coordinating with local doctors. Can use the machines such as laser therapy, electrical therapy, Jacuzzi, etc. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 13 NAME OF THE PROJECT INSTITUTO SUIZO CARLOS ALVAREZ MIÑO LOCATION Carapungo, about 60 minutes from downtown Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT To provide education for over 300 students from 3-12 years of age. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The private school has a kindergarten and a school where the children are taught subjects such as Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Physical Education, Music and Computation. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The community is located in Carapungo, an urban area in the north of Quito. Its climate is quite dry, which makes it less suitable for agriculture than in other sectors. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer must have basic English skills, be organized, motivated and committed, the ability to play an instrument or dance is a plus. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Depending on your skills and desire, the volunteer can assist in many different classes, with the most need in English, art and music. You have also the possibility to work as assistance of the English teacher in 14 the kindergarten. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT INSTITUTO SUIZO WILLIAM TELL LOCATION Northern Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT To provide education for over 130 students from 3-13 years of age. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The school is divided in a kindergarten and a school where the children are taught subjects such as Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Physical Education, Language and Computation. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The project is located in Colinas del Norte, an urban outlying area in the north-west of Quito about 3000 meters above sea level. In the morning it is pretty cold, later it can be sunny and hot. The population is quite poor and the majority of adults work as domestic servants and construction workers in nearby upper class communities. The director's family lives next to the school which creates a familiar atmosphere. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer must have basic English skills, be organized and motivated, and the ability to play an instrument or to dance is 15 a plus. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer takes part in our school as a teacher assistant. The volunteer will have the opportunity to teach the subjects and with the ages that s/he wants to, however the focus will be on English, Arts, Music, Computation and Dance. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT CAMP HOPE LOCATION Quito (Carcelén Neighborhood) TYPE OF PROJECT Disabled/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT To provide education to over 30 students with special needs. Also provide them with special therapies. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The project focuses on education and rehabilitation, but also provides medical services and family therapy. The classes are split into groups based on age (2-12 year olds). In each class there are six to fourteen children, one to four of who are disabled. Apart from that there are three areas especially dedicated to disabled children. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Camp Hope is located in the north of Quito. The participants come from low 16 income households. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Volunteer should have basic Spanish knowledge, have a strong passion to help those in need, dedicated and respect the Christian beliefs (although do not have to be Christian). VOLUNTEER’S TASKS In all classes the volunteer serves as a teaching assistant but depending on the age of the students the tasks vary. With the younger children you will help teach, change diapers, bring them to bed, help them eat, etc. With older children you are helping with arts and crafts and their homework. You will always work with another teacher. In the areas with only disabled children, you have to change diapers, go to the toilet with them, feed them, and help with their activities (therapy, arts and crafts, etc). HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT LOCATION CHICOS DE LA CALLE UNIDAD EDUCATIVA SAN PATRICIO (UESPA) Central Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT To provide education for over 100 children (aged 6-18 years old) who work on the 17 street. Not all: Some are in danger to work on the street. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The center is a school where the children are taught subjects such as Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Physical Education. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The project is run by the Salesianos and is located in the center Don Bosco, at the entrance to the Historic Center of Quito. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer must have basic Spanish skills, be organized, motivated, and dedicated. S/he should love children. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will serve as a teaching assistant. He/She will have the opportunity to help in the subjects and with the ages that she/he is interested in. Besides helping in the classroom, the volunteer serves an important role as a mentor for the children, most often playing and hugging them. Everything concerning comedor. Also you will have 2 meetings per year with all the other volunteers (international & national) who work in the Salesian projects. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 18 NAME OF THE PROJECT LOCATION CHICOS DE LA CALLE REFERENCE CENTER LA MARIN Central Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT The project helps 60 children who work on the street. It is a center where they can go for homework help, snacks, and a safe place to get off the street. All of the children are not there every day, as their attendance is optional. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The center is open from Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00 -12:00 and 13:00-16:00. The project offers homework help, informational chats, and the workers often accompany the children to school, in their families and at their workplace. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The project is run by the Salesianos and is located in the Historic Center neighborhood La Marin. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer must have basic Spanish skills, be organized, motivated, and dedicated. S/he should love children. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will support the reference center in all of its activities such as homework help, playing with the kids, assisting with the trips to visit the children in their schools, families and work places, and helping with fieldtrips. The volunteer also 19 helps to maintain order in the project. Besides helping in the formal way, the volunteer serves an important role as a mentor for the children, most often playing and hugging them. Also you will have 2 meetings per year with all the other volunteers (international & national) who work in the Salesian projects. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT GUAGUA QUINDE LOCATION Central Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Street children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT Receive working and street children from the surrounding area with the purpose of giving them education and a shelter while their parents work on the street. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES To give academic help and organize extracurricular activities to children who work, mostly on the streets. Also to support their families. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The Project is located in the Marsical area, the center of Quito VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS A good motivation. A level of Spanish, preferably 22-25 years old, preferably 20 experience in teaching, people who are willing to work with children from poor families VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Be part of the team. Help with field trips and also various activities and summer camps that are held in August. Also help to plan and prepare various events for the parents. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT FUNDACION VASE-ICYE ECUADOR LOCATION Downtown Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Administrative, Youth AIMS OF THE PROJECT Fundacion VASE-ICYE Ecuador is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the social situation in Ecuador through volunteering. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Coordination of incoming and outgoing short and long term volunteers (including seminars and cultural trips), host families, and social projects. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The office is located in downtown Quito. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Need to have a good command of English and basic knowledge of Spanish. PC literacy (Word, Excel, Access), be diligent 21 and reliable in your work, be willing to work overtime in peak seasons, showing the flexibility to travel abroad when needed, creativity and interest in international work – your ideas will always be welcome! VOLUNTEER’S TASKS There is a lot of flexibility based on the volunteer’s desires and interests. Will most likely work with the short-term program and seminars (orientation, mid term, final camp) and monitoring (project visits) for long term volunteers. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT SHELTER FUNDACIÓN FUDIS LOCATION Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Health AIMS OF THE PROJECT FUDIS provides integral attention for people suffering from cancer who come from other provinces to Quito to receive treatments at the nearby cancer hospital. The people who stay at FUDIS come from disadvantaged economic background and cannot afford to stay in a hotel in Quito. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES FUDIS provides housing, three daily meals, beds, hot showers, communal areas, 22 occupational therapy, and different workshops (wellbeing, self esteem, nutrition, preventative medicine, psychology, arts) for 80 people (40 patients and a companion for each). COMMUNITY CONTEXT Currently, the cancer hospital in Quito treats over 88,000 patients per year. Since many people who come to get treatment cannot afford to stay in a hotel each night while receiving therapy, FUDIS is able to provide a few of them with housing and a holistic approach to their treatment. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Basic Spanish, positive attitude, and an open heart. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteer´s tasks vary depending on interest and experience. For those interested in social work, they can help with Admission. For those interested in psychology, they can work with the full time psychologist in individual and group meetings with the patients. For those interested in education and who have a wide variety of knowledge, help is necessary in the implementation of the different workshops (nutrition, ceramics, etc). Also, help with the maintenance of the shelter and planning fundraising events (sales, teas, raffles). 23 HOSTING SITUATION The volunteer will have his or her private room in the project. NAME OF THE PROJECT Sistema Nacional de Música para personas Especiales SINAMUNE North of Quito LOCATION THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Disable kids AIMS OF THE PROJECT SINAMUNE, located at the north of Quito, was founded 16 years ago. The main purpose was to give handicapped youths the chance to improve their skills through the music taking part into an orchestra. The orchestra practices every day and it gives concerts in an average of one per month. In addition, the institution also works with the artistic skills of the students, teaching them painting, dancing, among others. The students with fewer problems are trained in working inclusion. At the moment Sinamune has 62 students, all of them with mental and physical affections. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The centre teaches how to play different instruments. When the kids have developed some skills they become part of the orchestra. Therefore, the kids practice for the orchestra concerts and 24 presentations every day. Later, they have different classes like dancing, handicrafts, among others. COMMUNITY CONTEXT SINAMUNE is located at the very north of Quito, in a neighbourhood called Carcelen, a popular area full of little stores. The main street is Diego de Vasques avenue, which is a street with many people walking and cars circulating. Many options of busses are available on this area. A big supermarket is close to the organization. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS It will be better but not obligatory if the volunteer could have some experience working with kids with special needs. Also, having a musical knowledge will help the volunteer to have a stronger role in the organization. SINAMUNE is opened for all those volunteers who are willing to share experiences with people that need a lot more attention than others, people that have special needs. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Depending on the skills of the volunteer, she/ he may be working in the orchestra, with an important responsibility in a group of instruments. The volunteer also can 25 support the teachers in the different classes they are doing and in all the activities the students perform. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family WORK PROJECTS AROUND QUITO NAME OF THE PROJECT MUCHUC PACARI LOCATION San Miguel de Calderon, about 1 hour north of Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT The subject of the project is cultural diversity and indigenous people. The aims are to form mutual understanding and respect among different cultural group. The school provides education for first grade students through high school. There are about 200 students (ages 6-16) at the school. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES To reach the aim of the project the students receive two hours of indigenous language Quichua each week. The teachers bring into discussion cultural 26 diversity in Ecuador in the everyday teaching. At the school children are taught subjects such as Math, Science, English, Quichua, Social Studies, Art, Physical Education and Computation. COMMUNITY CONTEXT San Miguel is a very small village with a simple everyday life. The environment is friendly and everyone knows each other. The center consists of a little park where there is a church and a volleyball field and on the weekends people get together at this place. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer must have basic English skills, be organized and motivated, and the ability to play an instrument or to dance is a plus. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will work as an assistant for one or more classes. The working task will be mainly to correct homework and assist during the class. There is also the possibility to contribute your ideas and lead activities. Sometimes you will have to replace the teacher when he/she can not attend. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 27 WORK PROJECTS IN TUMBACO NAME OF THE PROJECT GUARDERÍA RAYITOS DE TERNURA LOCATION Tumbaco, 50 minutes outside of Quito. TYPE OF PROJECT Education/Children – Toddles Group AIMS OF THE PROJECT Provide preschool education for about 40 children aged 1 to 3 years old. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Give the children a basic education to allow integration into primary school. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Tumbaco is a fairly large town that is separated into many smaller villages. This daycare center is in the East of Tumbaco and most parents of the children are agricultural or service workers. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Patience, flexibility, creativity and lots of love for small children and infants. The ability to play an instrument is a plus. The volunteers should be able to teach and prepare classes. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Help the teachers with their duties, play with the children, and give them different learning opportunities, music, physical education, and art. Organize special events for children (Christmas, Easter, Day 28 of Child/Mother/Father). TYPE OF PROJECT Elderly/Children AIMS OF THE PROJECT Provide food and shelter for elderly women who, without this project, would be living on the street. Misionarios de San Jose gives the ¨abuelitas¨ a home where they are surrounded by love and warmth. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The center cares for sick and abandoned elderly women. They provide three daily meals, housing and activities such as knitting or singing for the women. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Tumbaco is a fairly large town that is separated into many smaller villages. This center is centrally located near the downtown area of Tumbaco. Foundations such as Misionarios de San Jose are special because the elderly are often ignored in Ecuador. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Patience, love for elderly people, open mind, initiative, creativity and basic Spanish skills. 29 VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Feed, talk to, and accompany elderly women. If a volunteer has a special skill (plays a musical instrument, dance, etc.) the volunteer can start his or her own activities with the women. Tumbaco is a fairly large town, however, the project is located about a 20-minute walk from the bus stop. TYPE OF PROJECT Disabled AIMS OF THE PROJECT Stimulate disabled children through horse therapy. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Helping disabled children ride and care for horses. Special psychology workshops and rehabilitation. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Tumbaco is a fairly large town, however, the project is located about a 20-minute walk from the bus stop. The center is large, well maintained and located in nature. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Special interest in work with disabled children and a love for horses. If you wish to participate in the psychology and rehabilitation workshops, you must have 30 previous work experience in this field. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Help disabled children ride horses, maintenance of horses and welcoming of participants. This school is located near the central park of Tumbaco. TYPE OF PROJECT Education/Children AIMS OF THE PROJECT Elementary Education for 720 students, all of which come from families with low economic resources, from ages 6 to 12. Open in the afternoons from 1:00 pm-6:00 pm. Class size 35-45 students. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Basic education for primary school kids in the following subjects: Math, English, Computation, Science, Sports. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Tumbaco is a fairly large town that is separated into many smaller villages. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteers help teachers in the academic area of their preference, with a focus on English, Geography and Sports. There is the opportunity to lead your own class after six months. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family NAME OF THE PROJECT CAMINITOS DE LUZ LOCATION El Arenal, around one hour outside Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Children/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT The aim of this big, nice and modern center is to give the kids of the surrender area (low resources area) the opportunity to receive an excellent education including English and also have food at school by only paying a minimum amount every month. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The day start at 8 am with the kids having breakfast, later they have classes which include English, Theater, computers, sports among other subjects. At 10 am they have lunch and after this they go back to classes. At 13 pm they have lunch and around 16:30 pm the parents pick the kids 32 up. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The Arenal is an area outside Quito approximately one hour, is closely located to the Valley of Tumbaco. Caminitos de Luz is in a rural area, on a non-asphalt street. Despite the fact that there are some fancy houses, the majority of people living there do not have many resources. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS It is indespensable that the volunteers like to work with children, feel comfortable playing with them, teaching them and taking care of them. Volunteers also must be very proactive, flexible and be ready to help in any need the center needs. They should have basic spanish skills. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer can participate in a variety of tasks, but he/she mainly will be the support of the teacher. Helping with material, special activities, helping with English among others. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 33 PROJECTS IN COLLAQUI NAME OF THE PROJECT 24 DE JULIO SCHOOL LOCATION Collaqui, a village near Tumbaco, 60 minutes outside of Quito TYPE OF PROJECT Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT Preschool education for 60 students from ages 1 to 5 years old PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Preschool education in the following subjects: English, Computation, manners, numbers, letters and songs. COMMUNITY CONTEXT Collaqui is located in a more rural section of metropolitan Quito, next to the big town of Tumbaco. Many of the inhabitants do various types of farming for a living. It is a relatively low-income neighborhood and is quiet and safe. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Patience, love for young children, interest in education and some Spanish skills. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteers serve as an assistant teacher (teaching, caring, playing, serving food, etc.) The volunteer can also give his or her own classes in English and Computation. 34 HOSTING SITUATION Host Family PROJECTS IN YARUQUI NAME OF THE PROJECT YARUQUI HOSPITAL LOCATION Yaruqui, 1.5 hours outside of Quito. Yaruqui is a relatively poor, rural town. Most of its residents are agricultural or service workers. TYPE OF PROJECT Health AIMS OF THE PROJECT Provide low-cost healthcare to more than 1000 residents PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Healthcare, including a general check-up, surgeries, and baby deliveries COMMUNITY CONTEXT Yaruqui is a poor, rural town; most of its residents are agricultural or service workers. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Background in the sciences, desire to be involved in healthcare or public health. Intermediate level of Spanish. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Will start with administrative and nurses’ duties such as getting patient information, taking vital signs and assisting the doctor. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 35 WORK PROJECTS IN TABACUNDO NAME OF THE PROJECT FBU--ORGANIC FARM LOCATION Tabacundo, 1.5 hours outside of Quito. TYPE OF PROJECT Environment AIMS OF THE PROJECT Manage an organic farm that should serves as a model for others in the region. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Clearing of land, preparation of soil, planting and harvesting crops. Tree nursery, reforestation, milking. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The farm is located about 1.5 hours from Quito. The farm of 20 hectares boasts panoramic views of the Andes. The farm is a small community of 2 families, and is located above the main community of around 40 families. It is well connected with frequent buses to Quito, Otavalo or the main town for supplies and internet. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS A volunteer’s key characteristic should be enthusiasm. Additionally, volunteer should be open minded, like to manual work outdoors and have a strong desire to learn. Volunteers should be flexible on having a vegetarian diet, to cook and clean should be interested implants. 36 VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Feeding the chickens and harvesting their eggs, milking the cows, weeding the beds, making new beds for new plants including soil management, harvesting vegetables, cleaning stables and creating compost, work in the tree nursery, cleaning different living and work areas, reforestation. Work time from 8.00 until 17.00 with a two hour break. HOSTING SITUATION Living in the volunteer house on the organic farm property. The volunteers live with other long term volunteers (6-12 month) and with short term volunteers (2-3 weeks). Household duties, including cooking, are shared. Most food comes directly from the farm (vegetarian). In your free time you can enjoy amazing hikes to the nearby lakes and waterfalls. You should bring towels, sun cream, working clothes, no boots. TYPE OF PROJECT Education/Children/Work in the farm AIMS OF THE PROJECT Provide basic education for the children of rural farm workers. COMMUNITY CONTEXT While the volunteer will teach in local rural communities, they are based on the organic farm (see above project) which is located about 1.5 hours from Quito. Basic Spanish language is required, but for greater impact intermediate Spanish is recommended. Additionally, any skills such as music, dance, theatre, or art are very welcome in order to enhance the experience for the volunteer and the children. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteers will teach different subjects to children according to their skills and Spanish abilities; you will teach 2 or 3 days a weak – the rest of the time woorking on the farm. Intermediate Spanish speakers take older children in a variety of subjects 38 while minimal Spanish speakers teach younger kids in areas such as motor skills and basic reading/writing. In your free time you can enjoy amazing hikes to the nearby lakes and waterfalls. 39 WORK PROJECTS IN IBARRA NAME OF THE PROJECT LOCATION Asociación de Desarrollo Integral del Norte ADIN ECOSTUR Imbabura, Ecuador, around 2 hours and a half from Quito(the capital) TYPE OF PROJECT Community work AIMS OF THE PROJECT The Association is part of a foundation, covering several projects located in the same city, such as the medical center, the tourist office, the rescue center, and community work in black communities and indigenous. the goal is to help develop and strengthen micro-supported volunteer work to those that are consolidated. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The activities are supported in the medical center, the tourist office, the center of wildlife rescue, school community of San Clemente, between weekdays and weekends are free. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The school children are under 12 years of an indigenous community. The medical center and the tourist office are private offices are located in the city center and rescue center is located 10 minutes from40 the office and has about 100 wild animals. This site also provides environmental education to visitors and has a museum of wildlife VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The main requirements are: speaking Spanish, liking to help people and animals, being proactive and flexible. Weekends are free HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 41 WORK PROJECTS IN AMBATO NAME OF THE PROJECT LOCATION "CHICOS DE LA CALLE" GRANJA DON BOSCO DE AMBATO Ambato, 2.5 hours outside of Quito. TYPE OF PROJECT Disadvantaged/Education AIMS OF THE PROJECT Services to children and adolescents who lived and worked on the street and are in a situation of risk. We give them education, food and shelter to improve their condition of life and reintegrate them into their families. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES In the morning the boys go to primary school/high school in the local community. At one o’clock the boys return to have lunch. Also around 80 boys and girls of the local school come to the center to have lunch and to do their homework until 15.30. In the afternoons the boys of the center participate in sports, farming and livestock projects. The boys have all of their meals at the project. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The center is located in the outskirts of Ambato which is about 3 hours outside of Quito. The center is in a rural setting. Ambato is a fairly large city in Ecuador, with about two hundred and twenty 42 thousand inhabitants, and is very tranquil. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer should have a desire to work a lot with troubled children. S/he should be patient, proactive, caring, have basic Spanish skills, and like living in a rural environment and with kids. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Volunteer will be a leader that helps in the execution of all the proposed activities, such as teaching and helping cook. Also s/he will share the responsibility to take care of the facilities and also contribute in making decisions to improve the activities. S/he will also take on a mentor role for the children, and will share almost the entire day with the kids. In the morning the volunteers wake up the boys. After this they help the staff (social worker, psychologist, cook) in their activities. At lunch time they serve the food and help the kids with their homework. After this they supervise the boys of the farm in their activities. Also you will have 2 meetings per year with all the other volunteers (international & national) who work in the Salesian projects. HOSTING SITUATION Host Family 43 NAME OF THE PROJECT LOCATION INSTITUTO DE EDUCACIÓN ESPECIAL AMBATO AMBATO, 3 hours outside of Quito. THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Disability/Children and youth/ Escuela AIMS OF THE PROJECT The institute has about 215 students and it is the only such public institution in the province. The purpose of it is to rehabilitate and integrate the children who have either had a stroke, are mentally challenged, have Down syndrome or autism into the society. The children get special treatments such as psychological help, physical therapy, language therapy and water therapy. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The institute offers many different services: a). Work with the community (evaluation, diagnostic and orientation for disabled children and adolescents b). Early Intervention for children from 0-5 years old c). Primary Education for children from 6-12 years old d). Transition into adult life for 13-20 year olds--these are special classes for: wood and metal, artisan goods, and arts and crafts. 44 e). Center for Job Training for 16-26 yearolds--this is a special workshop for getting a job after leaving the institute and focuses on real life job skills, such as cooking, manufacturing, and working in a supermarket f). Therapies: psychology, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, horse therapy and water therapy. COMMUNITY CONTEXT The center is located in the central part of Ambato which is about 3 hours outside of Quito. Ambato is a fairly large city in Ecuador, with about two hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants, and is very tranquil. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Good communication skills, like working with disabled children, be outgoing, caring and motivated. Past experiences working with kids is a plus. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will primarily be working with the older children (13-26 years). The main tasks will be to help and assist them at their occupational training center. There is also a possibility to assist the professional workers with water therapy and horse therapy. The volunteer could also work with providing primary education for children from 6-12 years or giving special classes for 45 13-20 year-olds in wood and metal, artisan goods, and arts and crafts. Depending on the volunteer skills and past experiences there are other possibilities/flexibility for tasks. THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Education/Children and youth AIMS OF THE PROJECT The aim of Santa Marianita is to provide food and lodging for orphans and reintegrate them into society. The institute, in rare occasions, also receives elderly people, single mothers and mistreated women. PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES At the moment they have at the house a group of 33 kids (4 teenagers, 12 babies and 17 kids between 5-9 years). The activities of the kids depend on the age. The babies stay in their room under the supervision of the baby sitter. The oldest kids go to school in the mornings and they come back at 12:00 for lunch. 46 COMMUNITY CONTEXT The center is located in the southern part of Ambato which is about 3 hours outside of Quito. Ambato is a fairly large city in Ecuador, with about two hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants, and is very tranquil. VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The volunteer has to have basic knowledge of Spanish and experience with children (for example, baby sitting or working at a daycare). The project also welcomes professional volunteers such as physiotherapist, speech therapists or psychologists. VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer will have a mix of administrative and day-care responsibilities. Sending mails, typing information, answering the phone are some examples of the administrative work that the volunteer will be doing. Also s/he should spend time with the kids working in art projects and fun activities. The vegetable garden is also important for the institution so the volunteer may help with this work.
