Few people realize that Ford Motor Company was
Henry Ford’s third attempt at making
automobiles. He was voted out in one company
and went bankrupt in another. He was ousted
from the Henry Ford Company when he insisted
on improving the design of the car instead of
thinking of short-term profits. When he was
removed by the board of directors, the name was
changed to the Cadillac Automotive Company.
The Cadillac was originally a Ford. Later, as we
all know, Ford’s quest for a better car paid off.
You might be wondering, where in the world is this
going and what does this story about Henry Ford
have to do with Cairn Terriers and our club?
Well, in this time of economic challenges and
change, the world of dogs does not go untouched.
Fewer pure bred dogs are being produced and the
number of dogs being shown has declined as well.
Just like Henry Ford, we need to look at how to
make our club and its work better and stronger as
we look to the future.

My belief is that within every challenge there is
opportunity. And, during times of adversity,
people’s creativity soars. As a club, I think we
have an opportunity to turn such challenges into
creative, constructive, and exciting directions for
the Cairn Terrier Club of Northern California
(CTCNC). I saw the teamwork and enthusiasm of
our members as everyone worked together to make
our specialty such a success. And, I know we can
channel this energy into ideas to make the CTCNC
even stronger. Our club has a wonderful legacy
on which to build the future.
Over this year, the Board of Governors will be
asking how we can spring forward into the future.
And, as you can tell from the picture below, our
little four-legged friends are looking up to us for
direction. The Board of Governors welcomes your
ideas as we plan our events and activities for this
next year.

Our INT CH Cuba Libre of the Redlands (Cuba for
short) came to us from South Florida (where my Dad
and Mom lived) when we could not find a female
Cairn puppy in Northern California to keep our Cali
company. Cuba was born March 1, 1998, in a five acre
ranchette in Homestead, Florida where there were
Cairns, goats, deer, horses, peacocks, parrots, chickens
and of course, CATS. Her breeder, Will Jomarron, had
never shown his Cairns in Conformation though his
good friend Suzette Heider (Heiland) had always
encouraged him to do so. Thus, Cuba came to us with
no close Champion pedigree lineage but with a great
temperament and lots of personality and resilience.
Later on, with the help of our good friend, Mary
Lashock, we did find out about Champions far
removed in Cuba‟s lineage: Cairmar (Betty Marcum),
Uniquecottage, Redletter and Blencathra.
Cuba was 10 weeks old when Jim flew down to Miami
to pick her up and fly her back to California. When she
met our 6 year old cat, Reno, it was love at first sight
between the two of them, and it has been like that ever
since. Not like Cali, who chases Reno every
opportunity he has, Cuba, instead, loves to sit with
Reno in one of our wing back chairs and…they groom
each other. It is a beautiful thing to watch!
Cuba‟s love for cats has been inherited by her
granddaughter Lucy (INT CH Calcuba Calypso)
owned by our son Lee.
After serving in the US Army for 7 years, Lee drove
home from Georgia to California to settle near us in
Fremont. On the way home, he stopped by the Fremont
Animal Shelter and found Samantha, an 8 month old
kitten that “bewitched” him so he took her home. This

was in April of 2004. And Samantha for 2 years was
“the Queen” of the house, doing whatever she wanted
and having Lee‟s undivided attention. Then, in June of
2006, here came Lucy at 3 months of age. And
Samantha‟s life was never the same. After a while, she
would look at Lee in despair imploring Lee to take
“that dog” home where she came from. Eventually, she
started to tolerate Lucy and pretty soon they began to
drink from the same water bowl and Samantha stopped
teasing Lucy so she would chase her.
Over the holidays, Lee had Jim and me and our friend
Suzanne over for dinner. Both Samantha and Lucy
greeted us with joy and were very happy to sit with us
in the living room while we were sipping wine and
having appetizers. All of a sudden, Samantha jumped
off the sofa where we were sitting to check on
Suzanne‟s purse, which was on the floor behind
Suzanne‟s chair. Samantha began to rub her head on
the purse and this perked Lucy‟s curiosity. She
remembered that “that cat” the previous Christmas had
jumped on Lee‟s Christmas tree and broken several
ornaments when the tree came tumbling down, luckily
being stopped by the wing back chair. Sitting on the
sofa, Lucy began peeking underneath the coffee table
first and then jumped to the floor, heading to where
Samantha was and chasing her away from Suzanne‟s
purse. She then marched to the kitchen where Lee was
preparing dinner, sort of like to tell “her Dad” that she
had taken care of things for him…”That cat” was not
going to misbehave and embarrass them in front of
company!
In the 37+ years that Jim and I have owned Cairns, we
have never witnessed such a love affair between
Cairns and cats. We smile as we watch and enjoy the
relationships.

BRAGS WORTH BRAGGING ABOUT:

I.Searching for Majors
Well Nick and I finally have some brags!! Jordy and I travelled off to Portland Oregon in January in search of majors...
We arrived on Wed Jan 14, checked into our hotel and went over to the show grounds to get an area to groom and
check things out. It was Jordy's first real road trip (and mine for a dog show) and he was a super traveler. We got to
the Expo building and ran into Kenny Lyngen. Kenny and I had met once before and so we decided to set up our
grooming areas together since I didn't know anyone else there. I knew that Lorin Leith was coming with Greta, but they
would be with Bill and Taffe McFadden.
It's a beautiful area, and the expo grounds are lovely with views of the mountains and the mighty Columbia river. The
skies were blue, which meant cold, frozen mornings. But the expo buildings were heated so it was great.
The hotel was fine. We were in the "dog section" as evidenced by the howling in evenings and the occasional bark
fest. And once Jordy figured out that no matter how long he laid with his nose to the door, he wasn't going to be able
to go out and play....he got into the king size bed with the feather pillows. Perfect for a terrier to stretch out on his
back and fall to sleep.
It was well worth the trip to Portland for us. Thursday Jordy was Reserve Winners Dog, very cool, but no points.
Friday was a "practice day". My mom and stepdad and my sister-in-law all came down from Seattle and Nick flew in
rom SF Friday evening to cheer us on Saturday and Sunday. All of the extra cheering must have helped because
Jordy was Winners Dog on Saturday for a 4 pt major and again on Sunday for a 3 point major!! I have to add that we
accomplished this with a cast on my left arm thanks to a car accident in December....
Saturday was the day they were taping for Animal Planet and there was a lot of media coverage in the area so it was
very crowded and difficult to get to the ring. I heard that this was the largest dog show on the west coast and that
there were over 4000 dogs there. It was actually very fun to have such a large crowd of people. We did our best to
represent the California cairns. There was lots of meeting and greeting going on before and after he showed. And we
also made it onto the Portland news on Sunday evening! Yay for the cairns!!
By Sunday evening Jordy and I were both pretty tired and ready to go home. We had accomplished our goals and
headed home Monday morning through the cold and the fog of Oregon, tired, but very, very happy.
II. The Specialty
When I returned from Portland I realized that Jordy was very close to finishing so Nick and I started to think about
getting another puppy. I spoke with several people about puppies and wasn't serious about finding one right away,
just putting "feelers" out. It would have to be the right puppy for us.
I was having a conversation with Devon Allen about it, and said I really like Barbara & John Kornylo's dogs, but I know
that they don't breed often. My thinking was perhaps if they do breed in the future, they could keep us in mind for a
female puppy. So then Devon informs me that "well, funny you should say that, they just happen to have a female
puppy available to the right home". You know how that goes.... We went up to Barbara & John's to see her, she
jumped on the sofa and put her head in Nicks lap. The deal was that this would be his choice as I chose the last one,
Jordy. After the lap incident he was sold on her.
So off we go to the Specialty in Santa Clara, with Jordy needing 2 points to finish, and we would be picking up our new
6 month old puppy there. Barbara would show her in the sweepstakes and I would show her in the regular class.
The day had the potential to be awesome (despite the cold, and the rain). Peter Green had given Jordy his first 2

points at Cal Expo last year (before I even knew what points were.... thank you Pat White for filling me in). So I knew
that he liked him, but it's always another day at a dog show, you just never can be sure. And we had a new PUPPY!!!
Saturday dawned cold and wet (I know...we need the rain). When the show started I was still getting Jordy ready,
Barbara went up to the ring with Kitzeln (the new puppy) and came back with a win in sweeps, yay! And then a short
time later came back with Best Puppy in Sweeps, YAY!!!
Then I took Jordy up for his class, and we came back with a win in Open Dogs, yay, we're a little closer to finishing!
Went back for Winners Dog, and Peter Green pointed at us!!!! So we finished with a major... just awesome.
Then, right back in the ring with our brand new puppy. Puppies are so much fun. Having barely put my hands on her
prior to the ring this was going to be interesting..... And she behaved really well, so I was happy. But then Peter
pointed at us for 1st place! When we went back in the ring for Winners Bitch I figured it would be a fun experience, but
the judge seemed to be really watching us.... I was delighted when he put up Lorin Leiths Greta for Winners Bitch. I
knew that finished her. But then he really watched us again, and then pointed that finger of his at us for Reserve!
Jeez, how much fun can we have? Lots and lots of ribbons and trophies... I had promised Connie Monahan that I
would help with tear down, but we were too busy taking pictures (sorry Connie, maybe next year I'll be able to help).
Oh yeah, and to top things off Jordy got an Award of Merit in BOB..... What an amazing day. With a big thank you to
Barbara & John and to Devon for all his help, and especially to my wonderful husband Nick for all his support.

Press 1 if you think we are veterinarians and want free medical advice.
Press 2 if you know we are a rescue organization but want to save money and have us give you free, untrained medical
advice anyway.
Press 3 if you make $200,000 a year but still want us to pay to spay the "stray" in your yard (house).
Press 4 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has suddenly become allergic and you need to find the
dog a new home right away.
Press 5 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of your dogs because you are the only person in the
world to have a baby and dogs at the same time.
Press 6 if your dog is sick and needs a vet but you need the money for your vacation.
Press 7 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog is having problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the
old one right away.
Press 8 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.
Press 9 if you are elderly and want to adopt a cute puppy who is not active and is going to outlive you.
Press 10 if your relative has died and you don't want to care for their elderly dog because it doesn't fit your lifestyle.

January, which is in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.
Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to take your dog that you have had for fifteen years,
because it is not our responsibility.
Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten year old dog to be euthanized because we can't get to your house

Press 18 if you're going to get angry because the volunteers had the audacity to go on vacation and leave the dogs in
care of a trusted volunteer who is not authorized to take your personal pet.
Press 19 if you want one of our perfectly trained, housebroken, kid and cat friendly purebred tiny dogs that we have an
abundance of.
Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and
killed your neighbor's cats.
Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don't take personal surrenders but thought you would get a
different person this time with a different answer.
Press 22 if you want us to use space that would go to a stray to board your personal dog while you are on vacation,
free of charge, of course.
Press 23 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to deliver an eight week old puppy to your house
by 6:30 am before your kids wake up.
Press 24 if you have bought your children a duckling, chick or baby bunny for Easter and it is now Christmas and no
longer cute.
Press 25 if you want us to take your female dog who has already had ten litters, but we can't spay her because she is
pregnant again and it is against your religion.
Press 26 if you're lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel bad and take your personal pet off your hands.
Press 27 if your cat is biting and not using the litter box because it is declawed, but are not willing to accept the
responsibility that the cat's behavior is altered because of your nice furniture.
Press 28 if your two year old male dog is marking all over your house but you just haven't gotten around to having him
neutered.
Press 29 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling because she is suddenly pregnant.
Press 30 if you have done "everything" to housebreak your dog and have had no success but you don't want to crate
the dog because it is cruel.
Press 31 if you didn't listen to the message asking for an evening phone number and you left your work number when
all volunteers are also working and you are angry because no one called you back.
Press 32 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because today is your daughter's
birthday and you forgot when she was born.
Press 33 if your dog's coat doesn't match your new furniture and you need a different color or breed.
Press 34 if your new love doesn't like your dog and you are too stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you
in the next month anyway) instead of the dog.
Press 35 if you went through all these 'presses' and didn't hear enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of
tears being shed by one of our volunteers.

MORE BRAGS:
FROM JOHN KORNYLO: The Specialty weekend was great fun and full of surprises for the
Thistlegate clan. It began with two Sweepstakes wins...congrats to Pam Nicolai and Nick
Guglielminetti! Thistlegate Silver Lining (Nora the Sweeps winner's mom, handled by Devon
Allen) and Thistlegate Nordic Silver (Nick) hung in the Specialty competition to win Awards of
Merit. The following day, Thistlegate Silver Lining hit the jackpot under breeder judge Mildred
Bryant for a Best of Breed win over a very competitive class of specials and class dogs. Nora was
also pulled out for the final line up in the terrier group, but alas, not in the ribbons. On the last
day of the shows our newest addition to the family, Thistlegate Call the Wind (Mariah, handled by
Devon Allen) won reserve winner bitch and her elder half-sister, Thistlegate Moonsprite
(Luna) went Best of Winners for a three point major. Their mother, Thistlegate Silver Lining,
finished the weekend in the ribbons winning another AOM. Seems the Thistlegate gang is off to a
great start for their first shows in 2009. Congratulations to all of the winners of the weekend and a
special thank you to all of the club members who worked so hard in making the Specialty such a
success!

The Geographic articles deal with bad things for dogs which humans eat. Terry observes that Cocoa Mulch,
which is sold in many places and definitely contains theobromide, the part of chocolate that is harmful for
dogs, should be on the list of harmful substances. According to Terry, the stuff smells like chocolate and is
an attractant to dogs and planting time is approaching.
Terry reports that: “the Dog Press material may be old stuff by now but it explains what happened at
Westminster when Peter Green did not judge the Cairn and the Airedale. There was some discussion at the
Specialty. While many may know what happened, the incident as presented on the show raised questions
which may still exist in viewing members minds.”

CANINE CANCER CAMPAIGN KICKOFF
APRIL 18, 2009
Join us for a walk (with or without a dog) benefiting the Morris Animal Foundation's Canine Cancer
Campaign. The Sacramento Region Canine Cancer Campaign volunteer's group is hosting the 1st
annual K9K Walk to Cure Canine Cancer in Elk Grove, CA. This is the nationwide kick-off event.
Registration fee for the walk: $25 for adults prior to walk day, $10 for children 10 and up,
Walk Day registration: $30.
The K9K starts with registration and check in at 8 AM. At 8:50 am there is kick off talk about
canine cancer, then we are off for a 3k walk around the lake. There is a 5k walk at 9:45 am for
those who'd like to take a walk on the new perimeter park trail. Choose one walk or do both. After
the walks, speakers will discussing topics relating to canine cancer, prevention, wellness and other
topics to be announced. Speakers: Dr. Nancy Kay, Specialist, American College of Veterinary
Internal & Author of "Speaking For Spot"; Paulina Lawrence, Animal Behaviorist and
Communicator, more to come.

HARDY AKA McHAN’S HARD DRIVE

exciting day of my life when Hardy won the Specialty---I'm not kidding---I can't even think of any that came close!
Marriage-shopping-winning at horse showing-I could hardly breath.” As to Hardy, he showed perfectly. “He wanted to
win! This was the goal for the year and Hardy made it happen. I have never been more excited in my life,” Diana
said. As a result of the win, Hardy (Ch. Dogwood Pentium Processor x Ch. McHan's Hello Gorgeous) now has a Top
Ten breed ranking.
Other McHan Cairns’ accomplishments in February as reported by Nancy Lovelady: Ch. McHan's Eros (Ch.
Dogwood Love Affair x Ch McHan's Mighty Aphrodite), aka 'Fanshaw', owned by Lynn Evans and McHan, finished his
championship the same weekend as the Specialty, with three majors. McHan's Diamond Chip (Ch. Dogwood
Pentium Processor x Ch. Foxairn Spitfire of McHan), aka 'Diamond', went to Arizona with Amy Rutherford and picked
up 11 points (of which 3 wins were majors), going Best of Breed over 5 Specials at one show! And last, but certainly
not least, Diamond's litter brother, McHan's Blue Chip, aka 'Oz' owned by Linda Thoma of Wisconsin and McHan,
picked up 12 points in less than a month, including his majors (4 points at one show), showing in the Southwest, most
recently at the same shows as his sister.

Summary of Changes to AKC Obedience Regulations
January 15, 2009
To: All American Kennel Club Licensed and Member Clubs Approved for Obedience Events
We thought it would be helpful to provide AKC clubs that hold obedience trials with a summary of recent
and future changes to the Obedience Regulations. All of the following changes are in the October 2008
Gazette and available on the AKC website.
In 2007, the AKC Board approved three optional titling classes, which became effective on January 1,
2009. Offering these classes is entirely optional and the club’s decision.

Graduate Novice. Exercises are the same as when this class could be offered as a non-regular
class; judges must be approved to judge Novice or higher classes; suggested judging rate is eight
dogs per hour.

Graduate Open. Exercises are the same as when this class could be offered as a non-regular
class; judges must be approved to judge Open or higher; judging rate is seven dogs per hour.

Versatility. Structure is slightly different from when this class could be offered as a non-regular
class, with 12 possible combinations provided for judges to choose from; judges must be
approved to judge Utility; suggested judging rate is six dogs per hour.
Three new non-regular classes have been added to the Obedience Regulations, as approved by the AKC
Board at the July 2007 Board meeting. These classes are Wild Card Novice, Wild Card Open, and Wild
Card Utility. Judges must have trained and exhibited a dog to the Utility title and must apply to the AKC for
approval to judge non-regular classes.
A new Master (OM)/Grand Master (OGM) title program was added to recognize consistently high scoring
dogs, in which title points will be recorded for dogs with a Utility title. The point schedule is listed in the
regulations.
Effective on January 1, 2010, clubs will have the option of holding two all-breed obedience trials
concurrently, at the same time on the same day (as opposed to two trials in succession under the current
rules). A new non-regular class, Obedience Advanced Team Work, may be offered.
Effective July 1, 2010, a club may offer a new optional titling class, Beginners Novice (BN), which is a class
designed to bridge Rally and Novice level obedience.
Additionally, effective January 1, 2011, the CD CDX, UD, GN, GO, VER, and BN titles will be awarded to
any dog who receives three qualifying scores under two different judges. This will change the current
requirement of three qualifying scores under three different judges.

FDA Continues To Receive Complaints about Chicken Jerky Products for Dogs and
Cautions Consumers
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution consumers of a potential association
between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also
described as chicken tenders, strips or treats. FDA continues to receive complaints of dogs
experiencing illness that their owners or veterinarians associate with consumption of chicken jerky
products. The chicken jerky products are imported to the U.S. from China. FDA issued a cautionary
warning to consumers in September 2007.
Australian news organizations report the University of Sydney is also investigating an association
between illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky in Australia. At least one firm in
Australia has recalled their chicken jerky product and the recall notification stated the chicken jerky
product was manufactured in China.
FDA believes the continued trend of consumer complaints coupled with the information obtained from
Australia warrants an additional reminder and animal health notification.
Chicken jerky products should not be substituted for a balanced diet and are intended to be
used occasionally and in small quantities. Owners of small dogs must be especially careful to limit
the amount of these products.
FDA, in addition to several veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the U.S, is working to determine why
these products are associated with illness in dogs. To date, scientists have not been able to determine a
definitive cause for the reported illnesses. FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial
testing but has not identified any contaminant.
FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs
closely for any or all of the following signs which may occur within hours to days of feeding the
product: decreased appetite, although some may continue to consume the treats to the exclusion of
other foods; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; and increased water
consumption and/or increased urination. If the dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken
jerky product. Owners should consult their veterinarian if signs are severe or persist for more than 24
hours. Blood tests may indicate kidney failure (increased urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests
may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most dogs appear to recover, some
reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died.
The FDA continues to actively investigate the problem. Many of the illnesses reported may be the
result of causes other than eating chicken jerky. Veterinarians and consumers alike should report cases
of animal illness associated with pet foods to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator

He was 14yrs. old. He qualified at Del Val in October 2008. in Rally Adv B and Rally Ex B to earn his
6Th leg towards an RAE2 title, he would have needed 4 more kegs. During his career K competed in
classes with professional ob instructors and handlers with their top scoring dogs, and qualified on
many occasions. In 2003 K was ranked second highest obedience scoring Cairn in the United Stated,
he missed first place by one point. He was a great obedience Cairn and a credit to his breed. He will
always be remembered and missed.

keep them clean. She was our soul mate, friend, loyal companion, strong, tender, loving, independent, high spirits and
fierce in defending her family and household. She was the Alpha female with a zest for life until the end. Today we

Canadian cairnites to pick up their games or have them picked up by a friend since the Canadian

A VALENTINE‟S DAY BRAG
Katrina Berg Sussmeier reports that Fiona (Scotch Broom Fiona Jones, CD, SE.5,
CGC) earned her first Rally Novice leg on Saturday 14 Feb 09 at the Santa Clara
Valley KC Rally trial under judge Mary Lou Just. According to Katrina, “we
didn't take any lessons except to pay attention to Cyndy Young's presentation at
our January meeting!”

Lorin Leith & Otis Holt: We’re thrilled to report that our very first
Calypso puppy, Greta (Ch Calypso Ladybank JE) was awarded
BOW at our own Northern California Cairn Terrier Specialty on
Valentine’s Day by Judge Peter Green. Greta had received her first
major in Portland in January, so this four point major completed
her championship. Many thanks to Bill McFadden and his fine
team for doing such a great job with our little girl.
Greta is happy to be back in training, and on March 23, she
became a Canine Good Citizen by passing the test in her obedience
class.
