Ingredients Division
AKIOLIS, three Specialized Divisions
A subsidiary of the international company Tessenderlo Group,
AKIOLIS is a specialist in supplying industrial solutions for the
collection, securement and rendering of by-products and organic
residues – of animal or plant origin – produced by the agri-food
industry (from livestock farming to the restaurant business, manu‑
facturing and distribution).
A key player in this field, AKIOLIS brings together and runs three
specialized, complementary divisions:
> The Ingredients division, with SOLEVAL, specialized in rendering
safe by-products* from animals that are fit for human consumption into value-added materials such as ingredients and converting
bones into food grade bone chips. With APEVAL valorizing cereal
by-products into biscuits meals for animal feed.
> The Environment division, with ATEMAX, dedicated to securing
potentially or proven hazardous organic materials and processing
them only for use in bio-energy applications.
> The Development division, which includes several booming
businesses linked to new materials or new processes, such as Used
Cooking Oils and processes involving composting and organic
fertilization (with VIOLLEAU) or methanization.
*Animal by-products
Bones, hooves, skin, rinds and fat, viscera, feathers, bristle… animal
by-products are produced during the normal preparation
of meat in slaughterhouses, cutting workshops and butcher shops.
These materials (from beef, poultry, pork and mutton destined for
Food Safety, Traceability, Trust
By structuring the group into three distinct divisions, AKIOLIS is able
to ensure its customers’ total peace of mind. The strict physical and
legal separation of the different businesses, each operating with its own
teams, tools, facilities and companies, lays a firm foundation for
trust. It also ensures maximum safety for each type of raw material
being handled as well as flawless traceability throughout every
stage, from collection to delivery. For those who use SOLEVAL's
ingredients, this is the guarantee of professionalism and rigor in a
business where the origin of raw materials is an essential aspect of
the finished products’ quality and safety.
AKIOLIS & SOLEVAL: Synergetic Skills
As part of the AKIOLIS Group, SOLEVAL has its own specialized logistics and equipment. The added advantage of the group’s shared
Support Services bolster the performance of its specific solutions.
This cross-divisional organization enables SOLEVAL to call upon:
> An upstream sales team dedicated to the supply chain for carefully
selected, traceable raw materials.
> A finished products sales team dedicated to marketing the
ingredients and spearheading quality assurance procedures.
> A customer service dedicated to each customer to provide the
best supply chain services.

human consumption) are generally not eaten for physiological or
cultural reasons, although they are perfectly safe sanitary wise.
When stabilized as proteins and fats, they can be used for other
purposes. Within this context, they are governed by Regulation
(EC) No. 1069/2009 which labels them as Category 3 animal
by-products and clearly defines the specific ways in which they are
to be collected, processed and valorized.

Quantities
& Timing
Each year, SOLEVAL collects
545,000 metric tons of raw materials.
This constant supply flow enables the company to
ensure reliable deliveries to its customers and to
commit to specific quantities and dates in writing.
SOL_BR_UK_Exe-2014.indd 6
SOLEVAL operates 21 specialized production lines, each dedicated to a particular animal species
(poultry, duck, pork, beef, multi-species) and raw material (feathers, blood, bones, tallow).
By separating the work into distinct channels (see our chart on page 8) SOLEVAL is able to offer
customers a diverse array of specific products while maintaining absolute control over the
traceability of both the raw material supplies and the finished-product processing.
(1) Area certified ISO 22000: activities related to C3 animal by-products and food grade bone chips for the production
of gelatin, livestock feed, aquafeed and petfood.
(2) ISO 22000 is an international standard recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization). It relates to food safety
and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) monitoring.
(3) GMP-B2: Good Manufacturing Practices. Area certified: manufacturing of livestock feed ingredients.
(4) The Pontivy plant is certified for manufacturing organic petfood ingredients.
(5) SOLEVAL’s business is strictly monitored: Regulation (EC) No. 1069/2009 and the specific french regulation precisely
define the different uses that are authorized for ingredients derived from animal by-products.
05/03/14 16:15
SOLEVAL caters to markets that are complex, diversified, volatile and global. Its proteins and fats are
prized for their safety, nutritional value, energy and agricultural quality as well as their practicality
and sustainable origins.
for highly
demanding markets
Petfood: a diverse array of ingredients
to satisfy even the most finicky eaters
Livestock feed:
the advantages of animal fats
For the extremely demanding and segmented petfood markets,
SOLEVAL offers an array of ingredients from a variety of origins
to be used in manufacturing for dry petfood and treats for cats
and dogs: poultry, duck, pork or multi-species fats and proteins as
well as protein from animal blood and hydrolyzed feather protein.
European regulations authorize the use of some animal fats in
livestock feed. Known for their high energy and nutritional content,
they are used by the vast majority of countries in Europe and
elsewhere around the world.
The world’s leading brands like our proteins because they're
easy to use and they can count on their consistent nutritional
value. They like our fats because they’re highly palatable and
provide considerable energy.
Fertilization: environment-friendly,
organic solutions
Oleochemical industry:
widely sought-after fatty acids
SOLEVAL’s animal fats are prized by the oleochemical industry
for their specific fatty acid composition. They’re mainly used in
manufacturing soaps, detergents, cosmetics and lubricants.
Aquafeed: to protect the oceans’
natural resources
Fish farms provide more than half of the seafood eaten every year
worldwide. Carnivorous fish, such as salmon, trout and wolffish,
are fed fishmeal made from wild-caught fish. Some SOLEVAL's fats
and proteins (including hydrolyzed proteins) offer an excellent
alternative to fishmeal. Not only do they contain the required
nutrients, but they also reduce fish farms’ dependence on precious
marine resources, thus protecting the delicate ecological balance.
The agricultural value of SOLEVAL’s animal proteins primarily resides
in their nitrogen and phosphorus content, which are essential for
plant growth. Used to enrich soil either directly or in formulating
fertilizers, they are officially approved for organic farming thanks
to their 100% organic origin.
Green electricity and biofuel:
a renewable energy source
SOLEVAL’s animal fats can be used to produce methyl esters which
are then incorporated into biofuel. With a net calorific value (NCV)
close to that of heavy fuel (90%), they are also used as an ecological
energy source at green power plants or can be used directly in
AKIOLIS’ to generate heat.

Upstream partnerships
with a long-term outlook
Backed by reliable expertise, SOLEVAL has for many years main‑
tained tight-knit relationships with its upstream meat-industry part‑
ners – slaughterhouses, cutting workshops, retailers – from whom
the company gets its raw material supplies.
Working within a mindset of building long-term partnerships,
SOLEVAL provides them with reliable solutions and a competitive
edge for managing their by-products thanks to:
> A single contact person in each sales district to guarantee quick
response and high performance collection service.
> Quality assurance support to help partners constantly improve
their approach and implementation.
Quality Control and Support
Integrated Logistics Department
SOLEVAL has dedicated teams and technical resources to handle
and transport these raw materials under optimal conditions, quickly
and safely.
> Our collection agents are trained to recognize and select top
quality raw materials. They first conduct visual inspections to make
sure the supplies correspond to the contract’s specifications.
> Computerized scheduling of rounds ensures fast pick-up and
delivery, key to keeping the raw material fresh.
> Transport vehicles are adapted to each type of raw material
(solids, liquids).
> Traceability is ensured every step of the way and recorded on
written documents. This is reinforced by new generation comput‑
erized onboard tracking systems which are gradually being
installed.
Our upstream partners meet the precise specifications set forth in
terms of sorting by-products at the source, absence of any undesirables, freshness controls and traceability.
Initial audits and regularly scheduled inspections are conducted
within the framework of SOLEVAL’s ISO 22000 and GMP-B2
certifications(1). This also paves the way for providing advice on how
to implement systems for ongoing improvements in quality control
and traceability of the raw materials.

Our facilities are ISO 22000, HACCP and GMP-B2 certified(1).
These food safety standards apply to the following business
processes: collection, rendering, marketing and delivery. They
attest to the consistent implementation and application of best
practices in terms of food safety and traceability of ingredients.
Raw materials, initially controlled during the collection process,
also undergo rigorous controls upon arrival at our facilities
(visual inspections, detection of any foreign substances) and
throughout the entire process (temperature controls, antioxidant dosage, particle size monitoring).
More than 50 of our own employees are trained to ensure
internal auditing of materials and procedures. The consistency and frequency of these audits, alternating with external
audits, are in keeping with SOLEVAL’s approach to ongoing
improvements.

Each batch is subjected to various controls to make sure customers
receive products of consistent quality that correspond exactly to
contract specifications.
> NIR Method: at several different times during the production process
and systematically prior to releasing each batch, the proteins are
analyzed using the NIR (Near Infra-Red) method to measure the levels
of protein, humidity, minerals and fat, as well as their digestibility.
> CCP : the HACCP(1) program is in place at SOLEVAL. Raw material
temperature parameters (CCP No.1) and protein sieving (CCP No.2)
are automatically controlled prior to releasing any batches.
*Quality and
Competitiveness
Naturally there are costs associated with ensuring the safety and
preserving the nutritional quality of our ingredients. That’s why
SOLEVAL is equipped with high performance collection and
production tools to minimize these costs so we can deliver the finest
products and services, meet our customers’ specific needs,
and still ensure competitive prices.

Organic matter derived from animals is naturally rich in protein and fat, and because it's
biodegradable, it's also fragile. Guaranteeing impeccable food safety as well as consistent nutritional
values and flawless traceability – while still maintaining a competitive edge* over vegetable oil – is
SOLEVAL's core business.
Consistent quality

The challenge: maintaining consistent nutritional quality
Our ingredients are obtained through a series of heat-related
and mechanical processes, carried out at different stages and to
differing degrees in accordance with each customer’s specifications:
>Purifying raw materials by grinding and heating them in cookers
in accordance with the protocols set forth in the Regulation (EC)
No.1069/2009(2),
> Water evaporation (approximately 60%),
>Pressing the purified residual matter to separate the proteins and
the fats,
The heating stage is an important step to ensuring proper hygiene
of the raw matter and germ-free finished goods. Several parameters
established by the official regulations come into play (cooking time/
pressure/temperature). Excessive temperatures or extended cooking
time can change the nutritional quality of the fats or proteins.
SOLEVAL’s teams have the right know-how to manage and monitor
these processes to produce ingredients with well preserved and
consistent nutritional values, while still complying with the strictest
food safety requirements.
> Grinding and sieving the protein into just the right size particles
to match customer specifications,
>Filtering the fats to meet exact purity requirements,
> Adding antioxidants to the raw matter.

Animal proteins and fats provide sustainable
economic and environmental benefits"
05/03/14 16:15
Animal by-products not used for human consumption can provide incomparable energy and
nutrition, thanks to their high protein and fat content. Based on its special expertise, SOLEVAL
is able to generateadded value from these materials by redirecting them to other industries and
making the most of theirintrinsic qualities. This process naturally reduces the amount of raw
materials taken from human foodand fossil fuel sources. The company’s activities are therefore
fully in line with a sustainable developmentapproach and actively support efforts to solve one
of the 21st century’s greatest challenges: meet the world’s growing demands for food while still
preserving our planet’s natural resources for the generations to come.
for your success
(1) According to the latest "Grenelle
Environement", by December 31st, 2012,
all large companies must draw up a carbon
inventory report and implement an action
plan to reduce their Green House Gas (GHG)
emissions. The use of animal proteins
and fats can help.
By-products and economic
performance
When animal by-products are reconverted into raw materials, they
generate sustainable financial benefits:
> Benefits for users: SOLEVAL supplies its customers with top‑
choice alternative natural ingredients that are competitively priced
and absolutely safe and healthy.
>
Benefits for meat industry professionals: SOLEVAL effectively
FOCUS
boosts its partners’ profit margins by converting their waste into
valuable raw materials.
By-products and environmental
protection
SOLEVAL’s ingredients offer recognized environmental benefits for
their users.
> Reducing the carbon footprint:
Dehydrated animal fats and proteins produced and used in Europe
have a limited carbon footprint. They effectively replace primary
resources such as palm and soybean oil imported from other
continents, thus cutting greenhouse gas emissions otherwise
generated by long-distance transport.
> Combatting deforestation: the use of animal fats helps reduce the
consumption of palm oil, thereby protecting the forests which would
otherwise be converted into farmland in palm-oil producing
countries.
> Preserving our primary natural resources:
Meeting consumer
expectations
Today’s consumers are increasingly knowledgeable
and demanding. A product’s exact composition,
nutritional value, the origins of its ingredients, the
energy consumed to manufacture and transport
it as well as the production, environmental and
social conditions related thereto, have all become
decisive criteria for purchasing one product over
another.
- The business of rendering animal by-products does not compete
in any way with the production of food for human consumption.
Quite the contrary, in fact. It helps preserve our agricultural
resources and avoid waste.
- It also helps preserve fossil resources when fats are used to
produce biofuel or green electricity or when proteins are used
in bio-fertilization instead of chemical fertilizers.
In keeping with the objectives set forth by the "Grenelle
Environnement"(1), SOLEVAL is thus an active player in the quest
for sustainable development, naturally!
15
SOL_BR_UK_Exe-2014.indd 17
05/03/14 16:16
Consideration of environmental stakes is an integral part of our business.
As with all responsible companies, SOLEVAL invests in and applies best practices in
all its activities to limit the use of natural resources, respect the environment and
improve its integration into the local surroundings.
A Responsible
Company
Commitment
Our environmental protection initiatives rely heavily on the involvement of
our employees, who are trained in making ongoing improvements in
their behavior and implementing best practices in their day-to-day tasks.
Limiting the use of natural resources
> Water: we are particularly careful not to use too much
water when washing our collection and treatment tools. A
unique aspect of our particular business is that although we
do consume water, we also produce it with a positive end
result. SOLEVAL has implemented a system to use the water
that results from dehydrating organic matter (330,000 cubic
meters per year) as well as that collected from rainfall, thus
limiting the need to take water from the environment.
> Fossil fuels: over the past several years, our fuel and gas
consumption has dropped considerably thanks to our
judicious use of energy and our optimized collection routes
which reduce the total number of kilometers travelled.
Dialogue
Thanks to the CLIS (Local Information and Surveillance
Commissions), SOLEVAL maintains an ongoing, open dialogue with
the local authorities, environmental protection groups and even
privatemembers of the community for each of its production sites,
keeping them informed about how we conduct our business
with transparency.
SOL_BR_UK_Exe-2014.indd 18
Respecting the environment
Ensuring our neighbors' peace of mind is a major priority for
SOLEVAL. For many years, the company has been investing in ongoing
improvements to ensure the technical excellence and environmental
performance of all our facilities:
> Noise reduction: we’re working on reducing noise pollution
by purchasing quieter equipment each time we replace any
machinery and by improving the sound proofing of our
buildings.
> Air treatment: our production sites systematically control
smoke from combustion; they are equipped with systems to
capture ambient air in the processing plants and to treat odors
(air purifiers, biofilters and steam oxidizers).
> Water treatment: whether it’s done via water purification
stations or steam oxidizers, all the water (from processing,
purifying or rain) are treated before being reused in our
processes or poured back into the natural environment.
> Landscape integration: to improve the integration of our
industrial buildings within their surroundings, we pay special
attention to where and how they’re built, the color of their
cladding, the plants, landscaping and grounds maintenance.
05/03/14 16:16
SOLEVAL has made certain commitments to its customers, staff and neighbors, and has clearly
posted them at all its facilities. These commitments constitute the non-negotiable foundation of the
company’s policies. Driven by its determination to satisfy each of its contacts, the company decided to go
beyond regulatory compliance and bring its values to life through a sustainable development approach based
on constantly strengthening the reliability of its organization and its technical, logistics and sales
performance as well as the skills, commitment and professionalism of all of its teams.
