National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide program offered through the National Town Watch Association. The Ormond Beach NNO featured face painting, creative balloons, inflatable rides, a cook out and displays by area safety organizations including EVAC, the Ormond Beach Fire Department, and many other organizations supportive of our safe family community evening. The event raised approximately $5,800 to be used for the Police Athletic League and the DARE Program and was attended by approxim a t e l y 1,000. The grill chefs Chris Mason, John Bouck and REVIEW Bill Friel bar- becued 180 hamburgers, 50 Italian sausages, 180 hotdogs and 250 wings from Houligan's. The dunk tank was a hit due to the generosity of Lt. Godfrey, Ofc. Raley, Cpl. Pliapol, and Ofc. Rubin, members of the Ormond Beach Police Department, who volunteered to be drenched. Recreation Manager Stefan Sibley was the emcee for the evening encouraging participation for the adult and youth Hot Shot contest and announcing raffle prize winners. In the child safety room, approximately 150 children were finger printed. We wish to thank the many sponsors and volunteers for their generosity which helped make this event a tremendous success. (Please see last page for a list of sponsors and volunteers.) It all begins at 4 p.m. and admission is free. The islands are calling you to this fun filled event. Caribbean Night offers continuous island music, Caribbean and other cuisine and a host of special activities. A Caribbean Stilt Walker will join the festivities this year, and the kids will enjoy the limbo contests while others play on the inflatables, slides or rockwall. Some may simply get their faces painted. With the array of musical talent playing for five hours at the edge of the Halifax River, you don’t need to travel to feel like you are in the islands. Patrick Sammy will provide steel drums and vocals, while Lionheart and Mixed Culture will contribute reggae music. In the Island Marketplace, crafters and exhibitors will offer a variety of island inspired goods. Caribbean style food will be available along with other vendors including the Ocean Deck, Greg’s Barbecue, Song Kran, Art’s Lemonade, Holy Cow, Prestige Jerk Shop, and Don’s Foods. Music, games, family fun, food and an island marketplace…all in picturesque Rockefeller Gardens. Bring your camera and take your own photos at the Staycation Station! Rockefeller Gardens is located across the street from The Casements, at 25 Riverside Drive on the southeast corner of the Granada Bridge. Parking is available at The Casements, Fortunato Park and Ormond Memorial Art Museum. There will be some handicapped parking spaces at The Casements. For additional information, please call (386) 676-3216. SONC Summer Camp Rocks! This summer, the South Ormond Neighborhood Center (SONC) was a haven for fun! Children from throughout the community participated in the Summer Camp Connection program offered through the Department of Leisure Services. Throughout the summer, the kids had a wide variety of activities, learning, and a few field trips as well to make their summer memorable. Some of the fun activities in the program were arts and crafts, crazy kickball, the Wii Michael Jackson, and the Camp Champ Challenge. All of the activities made for one rocking summer of camp at the SONC! 08/05/2011 WEEKLY REVIEW PAGE 4 Circus of the Future Stars Children’s Musical Theatre (CMT) performed “Circus of the Future Stars” at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, July 29th. The cast of the show consisted of children who attended the CMT Summer Theatre Camp program which was held at the Performing Arts Center from July 11th through July 29th. “Circus of the Future Stars” is an original CMT production which features the performance skills that the children learned during camp, including juggling, clowning, magic tricks, riding unicycles, acting, singing, and dancing. The CMT Summer Theatre campers enjoyed a great time at this year’s camp and are already looking forward to next year! Camp T. Rec Ends with a Bang Camp T. Rec ended its final week of camp with a bang! The campers went to the pool and then enjoyed a guest from Blue Springs on Tuesday. Diamond Jim visited on Wednesday with balloon art and his comedic antics. They played on the splash pad at South Ormond Neighborhood Center on Thursday, and finished the week with the closing ceremony on Friday. Parents, friends and family who attended were treated to a performance from the campers, as well as light refreshments. The Department of Leisure Services greatly looks forward to providing another funfilled summer camp for the special needs community next year! 08/05/2011 WEEKLY REVIEW PAGE 5 Final Week of Summer Camp at Nova The Department of Leisure Services Summer Connection Day Camp at Nova ended its final week on a high note. The campers continued to enjoy activities such as dodge ball, soccer, basketball, flag football, the game room, board games, movies, and arts and crafts during the beginning of the week. On Thursday, Jumpin' Beans Party Rentals provided two water slide inflatables, making it a very “cool” day for the kids! On Friday, the campers performed their skits, dances and songs for the rest of the campers, parents, siblings and friends. The campers ended their last session of fun by dancing. What a great way to finish off the summer! Finding Art in Music This week, youngsters registered in the “Art Explosion” camp at The Casements got a special treat. A visitor, Chris Kastle, came to sing songs and tell stories of “Undersea” adventures. The budding artists had several opportunities to create art inspired by the sea. The group enjoyed the performance and learned that music is a creative art form, just like painting, drawing and sculpturing. The final week of “Art Explosion!” will be entitled “Discovering the Art in Music” where the youngsters will create their very own musical instrument and join in a drum circle during next week’s Farmers’ Market. Spaces are still available for camp. Please call The Casements for more information (386) 676-3216. 08/05/2011 WEEKLY REVIEW PAGE 6 Enviro Camp Ends with a Splash The final week of Enviro Camp ended with a big splash! The week was filled with several activities relating to water including the Fishing Day with Dan Smith, our local fishing enthusiast. Each year, Dan volunteers to teach the children the proper way to prepare their fishing poles, attach bait and practice patience when fishing. Before we had all 30 poles into the water, the fish began biting! It was an exciting morning for all. A grand total of nine fish were caught, and all of them were released back into the Halifax River, after everyone got a chance to look at and some children touched the slippery creatures. The next big adventure was the day of kayaking and paddle boarding. The group enjoyed their chance to try out both sports with the assistance of volunteers from Ormond Beach Kayak. Along with all the water fun, the children made ice cream and enjoyed a day on a waterslide on the North Lawn before camp ended. We enjoyed having the sounds of children’s laughter throughout the month of July and look forward to next year’s Enviro Camp. Summer Volleyball Clinic A Summer Volleyball Clinic was held this week through the Athletics Division of the Leisure Services Department. Fifteen (15) girls participated in the 4-day clinic at the Nova gymnasium where they learned specific skills and drills to sharpen and enhance their volleyball playing. It was a very successful week, and we look forward to seeing many of the participants in the upcoming Fall Volleyball season! 08/05/2011 WEEKLY REVIEW PAGE 7 Building Department Changes Recently, the City’s Building Department has made some changes to improve efficiency and customer service. The Plans Examiner will hold public hours from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day to assist the public and contractors with any questions they may have regarding plan submittal or plan review. A Building Inspector (“Inspector of the Day”) will be at the front counter from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day to issue permits for HVAC change outs, re-roofing, minor door and window change outs, and small electrical and plumbing repairs/replacements over the counter. These over the counter permits will be in addition to the permits that the City already issues, such as fences, business fire inspections, water heater change outs, irrigation/reuse connection (with Public Works approvals), and special events/ banners. All permits submitted are required to be up to date with all licensing/registration requirements. These requirements will not be waived to issue a permit over the counter. These changes will offer the Mechanical Contractor an opportunity to get a permit for an emergency change out within 10 minutes and a roofing contractor can get a permit and start the job the next day. If you need additional information, please call the Building Department at 676-3233 or 6763234.
