Our mission has become increasingly difficult as the number of animals in need rises annually. Without the proper resources, we simply do not have the capability to meet the growing demand for our services. A new facility will allow us to expand to meet more of the needs of this important population. The Humane Society has been operating in the same location for over 70 years. Operating in an old, dilapidated, inefficient building with unending challenges is limiting our ability to grow and help more animals and serve our community. With our animal intake growing an average of 10% each year, a new facility will help us do that. We will increase our capacity and enrichment of the animals, as well as implement new services to help with the challenges faced by owners and animals alike. The Broome County Humane Society has 5 full-time employees, 11 part-time employees, 1 part-time veterinarian, and over 80 volunteers. The Shelter animals require care 365-days a year! Our Mission Our mission is to improve the lives of animals, alleviate their suffering, and elevate their status in society, to help control the animal population, and to investigate and reduce animal cruelty. To create a better world for animals by providing a safe haven for animals and increasing adoptions by matching the right animal with the right home forever. Our Vision To be the premier animal resource center in the Southern Tier, dedicated to creating a humane community by improving and providing enrichment, education, and programming to keep animals and families together. Campaign Contacts Karen Matson Executive Director [email protected] (607)724-3709 JACK Kim Broderick Fundraising Coordinator [email protected] (607)724-3709 KLARIBELLE CHIEF ANGIE RUTHIE Currently, The Broome County Humane Society provides high quality, cost-effective care and programs for over 650 animals and hundreds of people annually. Services include: Animal Cruelty and Neglect Investigations – The Humane STORM Society is the ONLY entity in Broome County that investigates complaints of animal cruelty and neglect throughout Broome County. When the complaints are substantiated, The Humane Society assists law enforcement in prosecuting cases of animal cruelty and neglect and rescues animals from those threatening situations. In 2013, we responded to 397 reports of animal cruelty and rescued 266 animals from these reports. We receive NO REVENUE for these services. STORM Care of Abandoned and Stray Animals – The Humane Society shelters companion animals that are unwanted, have been abandoned or are strays and ensures they received proper vet care to get them well and on their way to their “forever home.” More than 241 dogs and 421 cats received our services in 2013. We invest nearly $900 for each animal that comes through our Shelter and a minimal amount of that is covered by our nominal adoption fees of roughly $195 per dog and $75 per cat. CLARICE KILIE Safe Keeping – We support the community with a low-cost safe keeping program to assist owners with boarding and care of their animals as a result of an emergency situation (ex. SOS Shelter, Psychiatric Center, Hospital, Rehabilitation.) Adopting Animals Out to “Forever Homes”– We provide a safe environment for animals until they find their forever home. We do not place a time limit on the length of stay they are with us. Spay/Neuter Program – To help limit the growing animal population, The Humane Society spays/neuters most animals prior to adoption. If, however, an animal is adopted prior to being spayed/ neutered under certain circumstances, The Humane Society will work with the adoptive family to ensure the procedure is done. SAGWA KARLENE Raising Awareness – The Humane Society partners with area organizations and works to promote awareness of animal cruelty and neglect, brings attention to the stray pet population throughout our community, and educates the public on the ownership of pet responsibility, including the importance to spay/neuter their dogs and cats and obtaining adequate veterinary care. Today’s Challenges • • • • Current Canine Kennels • The number of animals seized for cruelty is increasing at a rate of 7% each year The current facility is dilapidated and undersized to accommodate the number of animals in need The repressed local economy has resulted in more abandoned animals needing shelter and veterinary care Our ability to offer more programs is limited due to inadequacies of our facility Poor insulation, cracked concrete and cinder blocks, outdated plumbing, antiquated electricity The Solutions • New state-of-the-art facility with proper construction materials, specifically designed for use in animal shelters • Expanded program services to meet community needs • More visible location • Expanded outdoor walking area & play yards • Enhance on-site veterinarian services • Pet grooming • Expanded revenue opportunities • Ability to respond to seizures of large numbers of animals with our increased capacity • Puppy/kitten kindergarten classes • Obedience training • Education on pet ownership responsibilities Current Feline Intake A new shelter is necessary to meet the needs of the animals in our community. This new facility will be designed to solve the most critical animal-related issues, including pet overpopulation and animal abuse and neglect. The total project cost for the new building and furnishing will be nearly $1.2 Demolition: Masonry: Roofing; $92,000 $145,000 $100,000 Mechanical: Electrical: Design: $221,000 $105,000 $95,000 million.
